I was just enthusing with a coworker about the spam email I got from Gov. Hickenlooper thanking me for my support of Colorado Civil Unions (I sent them some money last year), and letting me (us all) know he just signed the bill. I was telling my coworker that I am pretty sure this is the first time I have ever influenced public policy in Colorado...
... for the better (even in the pebbles-in-an-avalanche sense). WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Funny how much more welcome I feel in this state just from this law having passed, even though Jay is on notice that he isn't allowed to die until we are very very old, and hence it will probably never affect me in any legal sense.

I just found a mistake^H^H^H thought I found a mistake in the LoC authority file. I squeaked aloud in excitement that I would be able to talk about it in my ungraded assignment for org of info this week. #walkingonthedarkside#dorkitude Please feel free to share your own example of disproportionate enthusiasm in the comments.
Dammit. It wasn't ACTUALLY a mistake. Still, I did squeak. And also, I would still love to hear y'all's examples. That was kind of the real point of posting.

Finding a dewey number without a decimal point. I was giddy laughing and thinking about what Borgesian library that might be found in. It was 6 digits long.
- Katy S
It's not quite the same thing, but I was pretty excited to find a book in our library, Marianne, with a bookplate stating it was a gift of the Third Reich, swastika and all.
- Steele Lawman
I would guess that that is a different but equally mindboggling feeling. Show it to me sometime?
- Marianne
I've been cross-stitching so much lately I've developed a blister on my needle-pushing finger. Not sure yet whether I will get a thimble or grow a callus.
Thing that makes me go hmmm: when I make multiple consortial requests for a relatively obscure book from 10 years ago, and Every Time, it ends up getting checked out at the owning library, and canceled on me, instead. Yes, consortial friends, I agree, it DOES look really good.
What book is it? Maybe I can do something?
- Joe Boone
Nah, Joe, thank you, but y'all don't have it. I ILL'd it instead.
- Marianne
Oh well, thought you were prospectoring it.
- Joe Boone
I *was* but after the 3rd try, went to ILL. :)
- Marianne
So we need more copies in the system, I guess. If it's lit and we don't have one, I'd buy it.
- kaijsa
I appreciate (and should've anticipated) consortial librarian helpfulness, but I'd rather not say what the book was, or I would've in the first place (here the reader side takes over from the RA side). And if I thought there should be more copies in the system, I'd make sure we bought one at CC. (I might, later, when it's more affordable - it's out of print and expensive, and reprints...
- Marianne
Other than the obvious, what delights me about this video that was filmed in the CC library tonight is that the students who set it up asked us first (it's finals night here), AND that our wonderful admin said it was fine. :) It's the little things, sometimes.

Heh. My student supervisor yesterday was all "so... uh... if something like this ever happens again and I'm in charge of the building, and it ISN'T pre-approved, WHAT DO I DO???" :D

I am still not entirely sure whether that person in the lower right corner who's bashing a ... beach ball? ... over someone else's head is buck naked or not.

I don't remember the rest of the dream, but just before I woke up this morning, I was emphatically trying to explain to the okapi's keeper, as I petted said okapi, that just because the okapi lurrrrrved me enough to act like a domesticated goat, did NOT mean that I was in any way equipped to look after it for the next week.
Funnily enough, if someone ACTUALLY tried to get me to look after a friendly okapi, I would have a MUCH harder time saying no. :D Good thing that's' never gonna happen.

It pains me to admit that anything can top the Muppets, but I really think John Lithgow did a much better rendition on his "Singin' in the Bathtub" album: http://amzn.com/B00000I8A3

It is disturbing how much I enjoy making Excel add things up for me. The funny part is I never remember that I like it until I'm actually in mid-function. #onceabiostudentalwaysabiostudent
That moment when I realize I didn't ACTUALLY forget to do something, I was just wisely postponing its dependence on the outcome of something else that happens later today? #PHEW
I have had TWO actual reference questions tonight. TWO!!! This is unprecedented (which is why we don't actually staff the ref desk on Friday nights).
- Marianne
how late are y'all open on Friday's? we close our ref desk at 4 and the library at 6
- Sir Shuping is just sir
(apparently on our new evals we are only supposed to write down "other accomplishments" if they are unprecedented. i somehow don't think this is what they meant, though.)
- Marianne
We close the ref desk at 5, the library at 10 pm. There are generally a few hardy souls who need to study on Friday nights, but they don't often want assistance.
- Marianne
I'd count that as "other accomplishments." sell it as they asked two because it was you there :)
- Sir Shuping is just sir
That was kind of interesting; half the campus just had a power outage and the other half didn't. Which meant half the library had a power outage and the other half didn't. (< 60 seconds). Reassured baffled patrons.
- Marianne
that seems weird that the library would be on two different systems
- Sir Shuping is just sir
I've not been in an academic library building yet where the electrics weren't a total tangle.
- RepoRat
that's definitely the case here. and the 2 halves of our building were built about 20 years apart, so...

SuperBowlSundayBrarian here, All's quiet until Monday... when I get in trouble for hacking in and splashing the game on the digital signage...

There should be a song. Like the periodic table song. *shudders*

I was too quick to respond to the twitter hackage, so twitter thought my password change was worrisome evidence of possible hacking, and forced me to change my password AGAIN (no, I didn't click on any email links). There's gotta be an xkcd about recursions somewhere that applies to this.
There is some beautiful art at this link. Which incidentally tends to work itself around the existing text of card catalog cards. Nifty!

I spend a lot of time grumping about scholarly societies who suck (ESPECIALLY THAT ONE), so I wanted to take a second to give the American Society for Cell Biology some props. They are distributing a CRAPLOAD of free lectures and short educational clips (including a monthly magazine). http://ibioseminars.org/ Nifty.

FF ate my very old ani difranco lyrics thread and I am Resting Up, which as always involves a lot of ani difranco. So I am putting this here for the next time I want it. Feel free to chime in with whatever ani lyrics you want, before that. (You can chime in with other things, but I will ignore them. Unless they are too awesome to ignore.)
Buildings and bridges / are made to bend in the wind / To withstand the world that's what it takes. / All that steel and stone / Is no match for the air, my friend; / What doesn't bend breaks, what doesn't bend breaks.

it all just slips away so slowly, you don't even noticed that you've lost a lot. I'm like one of those zombies in Vegas pouring quarters into a slot. Now I am tired, and I am broke, and I feel stupid and I feel used. And I'm at the end of my little rope, and I am swinging back and forth about you.

So I have two final projects to do by Friday and Sunday respectively, and an exam to take by the Friday after that. It wouldn't be accurate to say I haven't started them yet, but it would be hard to prove I had. Add in visiting people and holiday events and early morning meeetings and some family things I'd rather not talk about here, and well.
Don't be surprised if those of you who see me often don't see me so often, for the next week or two. I still adore you. *cheek kisses, scuttles off to bed*
- Marianne
So how's the final push on the Friday project going?
- Heather
Um. My brain gave up on my family things and I went to urgent care last night with the worst case of pinkeye the urgent care doc had seen in years (on its first day!). Sometimes the best way to push through is to let things go? I'm going to be okay, but I had to reprioritize. Heal first, Do All The Things some other day.
- Marianne
All The Things are less important and will wait on you.
