Laura, it definitely wasn't staged. I can tell you that Steve & Tina Gillmor were shocked, and then Steve furious that his show was cut off without his say-so. What bothers me about the whole thing is that the one who didn't do anything (steve) ends up looking like an asshole in the aftermath, inviting the Twit community to a free-for-all at his expense. He's a big boy, can defend himself, but it's undeserved and does a disservice to his work.

His perception was that his integrity of an honest review was questioned since he had a special hi tech unit for 7 day review. When a person is honest and their integrity is questioned it's extremely insulting. Whether the person intended it or not. From what I've seen Leo Laporte is genuine and authentic as well as transparent. Hopefully this gets resolved in the best possible way for both of them.

I was watching Leo's twitlive.tv stream for hours leading up to this. Unless they palnned it the day before, which seems unlikely, it wasn't staged. Even if I hadn't been watching I would have a hard time thinking it was staged. Leo hasn't ever done a stunt like that before so why would he start now?

I've detailed this online before but I'll repeat it here: I was looking into Alexa rankings years ago (between Sep 2004 May 2005). Just by using the Alexa IE toolbar, I managed to get a *non-existent* website (i.e. a random domain which wasn’t even registered) to rank around 1,500,000. I also have access to two sites (the site where I work at and my own site http://oyeme.com). Alexa consistently misreports the traffic to both and since their "upgrade" they even dropped Oyeme from top 100,000 when it gets more users/pageviews than my work's site. I say this to everyone I know.

Lesson: Don't go for big press until you're ready. One of my VC friends advises people only to go for ~5,000 users in the beginning (so many beginners want traffic, traffic, traffic). Then you can test your product, change the interface, etc... before you get into a "New Coke" and "old Coke" situation. 5,000 is enough to give your product/website a good testing, and avoids this Cuil failure.

I'm unimpressed by Cuil. It's not how big their index is, it's about how accurate their results are. From my early experiments, I don't get what I'm searching for -- isn't that what a search engine is supposed to do?

Not impressed. While the layout for results is pretty, it doesn't give me any information. Ran a search on my own site - Dad info - and it got the bloody thumbnail wrong :( Dig a little deeper on a search where you know the net landscape well (eg vanity search) and the results are often bizarre - the photos acommpanying the SERPS are irrelevant/random/wierd. Can't help thinking that the next generation of search will be people centric rather than page centric - I can find more interesting stuff on FF.

Svetlana: Since the "glamor self-search" results work well for university professors and some famous people, I think it's a miscalculation from having too small a test group (since they've been concerned with a stealth launch). They probably didn't test enough middle-level people (e.g. me with only 47,000 pages on Google) to see the problems.

Rather than a stealth launch, It seems that in this case a better process would have been (1) alpha-launch, generate buzz by selectively letting in tech bloggers, test their stuff, make bloggers feel good by being in on something early, about 200-500 people (2) private beta-launch, quiet, limited to 5,000 people (3) New York Times launch. - I think their team was too cocky (e.g. we're smarter), not realizing they would shoot themselves in the foot.

Mitchell: Very true, when I read they decided they were ready for everyone on day 1 and decided not to add beta to the logo, I was very excited - finally someone dares to launch a working product from the beginning. Comparing the estimated number of results isn't a very accurate technique. To really do size comparisons, you need narrow queries where you can verify all of the results. Here's a random example: http://www.google.com/search... (3 on google, 0 on Cuil)

The random word test doesn't work so well either. Google often returns pages that don't have those words, either because it found synonyms, or because it considered anchors. And it has broken cache highlighting that can show you a snippet with the words but can't find the words on the cached page. For some matches it won't show you the cached page, so there's no proof or explanation of why it gave you that page.

Amit, if the count is small it's possible to manually check each returned page for the required keywords. Of course there are still other problems with the "random narrow query" technique for testing index size, but it's probably a lot more accurate than trusting and comparing the reported estimated results counts.

I use vantity searches as my standard test case as my names's fairly uncommon. I've had that happen a few times, but always assumed that it was some kind of issue where the query matched in the base index but not more recent one, or something like that. The broken cached links are super annoying though -- it's probably the most irritating Google bug for me.

Paul: I didn't look closely enough to be sure, but consider the query [allintext: +amit pen chains lemurs]. Google returns The Random Quotes Game, with a snippet that includes lemurs and pen, but not amit. The cached page claims at the top that it doesn't have lemurs or pen, yet it does. The cached page doesn't include amit, and the current page doesn't include amit. Note that allintext: is supposed to discard anchor matches. Perhaps there's some synonym of amit, but + and "" don't help.

I have patience, but do you really believe that after all these hours there will be any other fixes? I am pretty sure their backup is couple of months old and atm that's all they can do. If it doesn't get completely fixed, I'm off Twitter forever. I don't have the time and energy to rebuild everything from scratch just to see it screwed in the end.

so what I meant to say was, I like tweetdeck for trying to improve on apps like twirl or twitterific for that matter, but I'd still love to see some über combination of tweetdeck & twirl that lets you group, customize color in UI, post using ping.fm and receive more than just tweets like FF does - not so much a firehose but more like a spiffy detachable shower head w/the different dial settings. Come to Mamma!

I really like this so far, it'll be interesting to see what future plans holds. I'd like to see a tad more customization of the client itself. Nice so far though.

Nice that you can keep twittering even when Twitter is down. Categories/groups/tags is clearly a direction Twitter user needs are heading. Also need an app, though, that can handle multiple Twitter accounts. I tried Twhirl but after a while kept getting timeouts on the 2nd open account. Maybe that's Twitter's fault, not Twhirl's.

Just saw it with my 9-y-o daughter. Animation was amazing and it was visually attractive. Story was cute, but not great. I think that Monsters Inc., the Incredibles and even Toy Story had better writing. Most interesting thing to me was that more than half the people in the theater were adults with no children. Definitely a bit of a geeky crowd, different than you might expect for a Disney/Pixar flick. All that said, Nice. Now all I need is a blackberry version (that also handles friendfeed) :)

Ok, another ugly black twitter client. I want an Air app with some brushed metal feel to it. Having something on my desktop that doesnt match the rest of the windows makes me feel like Im on windows.

looks excellent. love the "maximized view" for real twitter addicts. though I can't imagine there are many left that are addicted, since, well, you know. can't really be addicted to twitter when it's down all the time

I like the group service, but I love the Summize integration more. I've watched my search for TweetDeck just blow up today, and the app hasn't crashed once or locked up - which is saying something despite the fact it's been open all day.
