Recently my cousin's head was run over by a car. This is what's left of her helmet. My cousin completely survived because of this helmet. Please think of this before riding a bike without a helmet next time!

I was hit while riding to work in summer 2006 & did not want anyone to touch my helmet at all costs. If my brain was scrambled, I did not want anyone to touch my egg:) I highly recommend a helmet especially if you think you will not need one! Mine was almost the same color too & manufacturer, but there is no conspiracy there:)

Wow, glad to hear your friend is doing well after that. I agree, helmets save lives. Regardless, I've many intentional close-calls by drivers who don't want to share the road. Unfortunately, this is the common attitude where I live (southern US).

we wear helmets for everything: mtb, snowboarding, wakeboarding, skateboarding & even surfing - skulls are fragile why not put a protective layer around it (i also try real hard to not ride on streets - a high percentage of drivers are oblivious to bike riders)...

I always ride in my helmet and stay to bike lanes as much as possible. Nice to know the safety tools work. Now, if I can just avoid that NYPD cop with a penchant for knocking people off their bikes. Hopefully, he won't transfer to LAPD.

Point blank. You are a moron if you ride without a helmet. Sorry, but that's true and you're just going to play into Darwinian theory should you continue to ride without one. Any 'real' cyclist (e.g - you've been hit by a car - and yes, I have been) will tell you this without reservation. Helmets work without a doubt.

A friend who's a cop refers to motorcycles as donorcycles whenever she sees someone riding without a helmet. I figure that applies for bicycles, too.

I was on the way to work Monday morning while it was raining, when the third car in front of me spun out of control and flipped twice into a ditch. When I pulled over to help her out she was just fine. She only had a scratch on her left shoulder from the broken window and was not hurt anywhere else. THE REASON: She was wearing her seat belt. It's nice to hear that these devices are actually helping us!

Thanks for sharing - I had a mishap with a car, wasn't wearing a helmet at the time, was lucky. If they don't see you, it doesn't matter either way. Wear the helmet!

This isn't as extreme as this but when I fell off my bike onto a sidewalk and broke my arm, I thought I was fine for a while. Later, my dad noticed that the whole front of my helmet was all scratched up and the visor in front was torn off! I realized that if I wasn't wearing my helmet on the 2 minute trip down the road, I probably wouldn't be typing this comment right now! Not that I'd be dead but I would have suffered some head damage, limiting my ability to do most things.

it'd definitely going to take me a while to get to a million. I'm publishing about 200 photos to flickr a week right now and at this pace it will take 92 years to get there. I'll get the pace up to 400-500 a week in the future though. Better technology should make processing easier and someday my kids will be grown and I'll be able to quit my day job and focus on this even more. The best photos have yet to be taken.

What's your shot/publish ratio? I mean, on average how many shots do you take to produce those you publish?

atzmon, I probably average about 2,000 shots a week that I shoot. And I'm probably processing 300 or so of those a week at present, so I'm probably keeping about 15%. The other 85% never get processed and are kept in my archives. I'm trying only to process and publish the shots that I think meet a certain quality criteria.

Jauder, the good news is that processing will only get easier in the future. I've watched it get better with each successive Adobe release. Lightroom 2.0 is the best processing tool yet. It's not necessarily faster per se though because with more tools there are yet even more ways to tweak a photo hence even more time. But the tools to speed things up are coming too. auto geotagging, better anti dust tech, faster processing speeds, easier online tools with faster broadband are all around the corner.

Posterous continuous to get insanely useful. They just added auto-posting today to YouTube and Friendfeed. This continuous pipeline of innovation, plus some great advice I got from my friends Stowe Boyd (we talked about Flow when I was in Germany), Jeremiah Owyang (we discussed daily publishing in San Francisco) and Dwight Silverman (one hub, not two says Mr. S), convinced me it's time to make the jump. This site will become my primary publishing hub - my new home on the web. Meanwhile the spokes will become the social networks and platforms where we all spend time. Today that's Twitter, Facebook and Friendfeed. Tomorrow, who knows. My old site will stay online for the archives but I will not be putting any more content up on the old site. Please update your RSS reader to my new feed. I am excited by the change. After five years of publishing, this seems like the right thing to do. Permalink | Leave a comment »

Whenever I see the thumbnail of the picture of you with the wrestling belt on, in thumbnail size it looks like a bare midriff, with a HUGE hairy belly button, and my subconscious that completes the image revolts me for a second, forcing me to us the conscious mind to click on it, blow it up to full size and calm my subconscious down, else the subconscious will not let me go on with my day.

I will never ditch RSS. It is too easy and great. I don't check as often as Twitter, but I can save posts and refer back to them when I need to. I can also easily find blogs there, rather than my bookmarks, which is flooded. Twitter is GREAT, but who knows if it will last? MySpace was great once, too. RSS is more stable than a social network, and easier to sort (no hashtags required).

Nope, absolutely not. Twitter serves its purpose as microblogging and link sharing but RSS still has a purpose for me. Not everything I read is shared through Twitter (actually, I should hope not!). If I got all my news through Twitter, it would be more of an echo-chamber than it already is. Further more, I work in marketing. I use RSS to keep up with client industry news and to aggregate information. Twitter cannot do this for me.

OK, so this post brought out mostly RSS lovers (which I remain). Yet why is it that some are now railing against RSS? Here's another thought RSS = a standard. We have no standards for status updates and thus Twitter and Facebook are in the driver's seat. RSS is final and stable.

Nope. I see different uses in the different services. I like the organization of a reader. and I like your comment about the standards and stability and lack thereof on Twitter and FB. Also, I like to pick my news sources and trust that I am getting something accurate. SkyGrid is a nice combination of real fast / real time and reliable.

That question is ridiculous. RSS is far easier to manage and customize and can deliver a lot more information. Watching the interests of your social graph on Twitter is great, but far more and higher quality information can be consumed, (re)organized, and aggregated with a good RSS reader.

I think there is some confusion here. Are we talking about giving up on the technology that is called RSS, or are we simply talking about switching the platform on which we consume these ie. ditching google reader for friendfeed or twitter. it is like dithing your car for fishing: they are not the same. More precisely, Rss gives you focuses attention on the sources of information. Twitter gives you second hand check-it-outs that are possibly not so focused or accurate, but *seem* more urgent because they are in real time.

For ordinary web users who are only interested in a handful of feeds, maybe 10 or 20 then twitter beats a feed reader hands down. Much simpler to use, easy to understand and real time. Plus twitter has the social media/communication features. However power users that are tracking 100 or more feeds need a reader for their research. The google reader / feedly combination is hard to beat for these people.

I am using RSS in FriendFeed. What I have ditched is Google Reader. RSS is underlying technology, not an application. We'll keep using that underlyng technology for a long time. We may ditch the readers, but not the RSS itself.

In fact I think it is the weakness of friendfeed that it is too focused on friend and not enough on feed. I equate FF with Twitter because a SBS comparison shows the similarities + there has been a complaint driven seg that has suggested in previous memes that FF follow the Twitter model. The gray background tends to distract, making the "left" column appear centered and contained in the spacescape. I agree that Lindsey's design is more "form follows function" and is superior to what we have now.

Ianf ⌘ Any reading form needs to take in the traditional "usability" sense. It is extremely hard on the eyes to read from a smaller column than a wider one. This forum is about reading information and reading that information at a pretty advanced rate. I'm not one for rampant use of hidden menus but I could see them here as one possible solution to giving grace to the reader's screen....

Interesting theory, but it brings a lot of intellectual baggage along with it. It seems like their definition of morality is essentially emotionalism, that is, that morality is just having feelings about issues. That clashes pretty strongly with my ideas about objective morality. I do agree that it may make finding time for moral analysis more difficult, though.

What's interesting is AFAIK Facebook has been doing the framing thing for a while. I think Digg probably cribbed the idea from them and tied it together with a URL shortening service. Probably for an active Digg user, it's a great feature and experience but they've obviously stepped on the toes of their most valuable audience: content generating sites.

it took years to get into this mess, and it will take years to get out of it. neither the process of defining the bailout terms or voting on them is going to change anything immediately - and neither of these guys have the economic bona fides to substantially directly improve the legislation anyway. suggesting to take time out here is lame the debate must go on!

What exactly is McCain himself going to do to wrestle this to the ground? Is he going to contribute more than those who are actually on the Banking Committee?

Hmmm, not sure if it is in the sidebar, but there is a Flash object that allows for multiple file upload with a progress indicator. If you click "Photos" at the top of your feed, you can select any number of images and see them upload in parallel.
