Recently my cousin's head was run over by a car. This is what's left of her helmet. My cousin completely survived because of this helmet. Please think of this before riding a bike without a helmet next time!
bike helmet.jpg
I've ridden only once without a helmet in as long as I can remember. Felt vulnerable! - Adam Loving from StumbleRead
It's true. They work. - Andrew Feinberg
wow... that's amazing. how old is your cousin jesse? - dave mcclure
dave, my cousin's 30, just 1 year younger than me - Jesse Stay from twhirl
You can read her story, in her own words here. I'm inspired: http://thetopotheworld.blogspot.com/ - Jesse Stay from twhirl
This happened to a friend of mine at the beginning of the month. He didn't do so good in the accident, but the helmet obviously saved his life. Thankfully is on his way home tomorrow: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit... - Steve Lacey
I used to ride my bike without the helmet even though it is mandatory in Chennai, India. But after reading this I am not even going to the next street in my bike without helmet. - Sudar
I never wear a helmet. When hearing things like this, I always think of this article.http://news.bbc.co.uk/1.... In the Netherlands no one wears a helmet. It seems safe to me. - Peter Stuifzand
I was hit while riding to work in summer 2006 & did not want anyone to touch my helmet at all costs. If my brain was scrambled, I did not want anyone to touch my egg:) I highly recommend a helmet especially if you think you will not need one! Mine was almost the same color too & manufacturer, but there is no conspiracy there:) - Roney Smith
Bicyclists/motorcyclists that don't wear helmets are better called future organ donors - Brian Sullivan
Thanks for sharing. I ride often at traffic time between cars. always wear my helmet...itsg good to know that It does work :) - jonathan from twhirl
that's incredible... - Jamie Allen from twhirl
Wow, glad to hear your friend is doing well after that. I agree, helmets save lives. Regardless, I've many intentional close-calls by drivers who don't want to share the road. Unfortunately, this is the common attitude where I live (southern US). - pete
we wear helmets for everything: mtb, snowboarding, wakeboarding, skateboarding & even surfing - skulls are fragile why not put a protective layer around it (i also try real hard to not ride on streets - a high percentage of drivers are oblivious to bike riders)... - mike "glemak" dunn
I always ride in my helmet and stay to bike lanes as much as possible. Nice to know the safety tools work. Now, if I can just avoid that NYPD cop with a penchant for knocking people off their bikes. Hopefully, he won't transfer to LAPD. - Jason Toney
Peter Stuifzand, my cousin would be dead if she did not wear her helmet. That article is BS. Wear your helmet! - Jesse Stay from twhirl
Point blank. You are a moron if you ride without a helmet. Sorry, but that's true and you're just going to play into Darwinian theory should you continue to ride without one. Any 'real' cyclist (e.g - you've been hit by a car - and yes, I have been) will tell you this without reservation. Helmets work without a doubt. - AJ Kohn
I survived a nasty motorcycle crash in my youth and would also be dead without that helmet - which cracked in 2 like an egg (that would have been my head, as the nurse aptly put it!). - Susan Beebe
A friend who's a cop refers to motorcycles as donorcycles whenever she sees someone riding without a helmet. I figure that applies for bicycles, too. - ha3rvey (just a friend)
I was on the way to work Monday morning while it was raining, when the third car in front of me spun out of control and flipped twice into a ditch. When I pulled over to help her out she was just fine. She only had a scratch on her left shoulder from the broken window and was not hurt anywhere else. THE REASON: She was wearing her seat belt. It's nice to hear that these devices are actually helping us! - David Cook
Awesome. I ride my bike to work everyday and I see a lot of people with no helmets on. I don't know how they do it. - Clint Ecker
Wow! I wear mine! Didn't for years - I was lucky I guess. Thanks for posting that! - matthew hunt
OMG... Jesse, do you have a link other than here on FF? I have friends whose kids refuse to wear theirs, and seeing this may help. - Cyndy
Cyndy why not just link here - http://friendfeed.com/e... - Brian Sullivan
Dutch don't wear helmets and they don't get killed by cars http://www.ski-epic.com/amsterd.... - Peter Stuifzand
Actually they do get killed by cars. But culturally they are not inclined to wear helmets. - Brian Sullivan
Cyndy, with this being dug out of the grave, I just noticed your question. That particular picture is from my cousin's blog here: http://thetopotheworld.blogspot.com/2008... You can read the full story here: http://thetopotheworld.blogspot.com/2008... Search for "run over by car" and you can read about her entire ordeal. - Jesse Stay
My brother would not be alive today if he did not wear his helmet while riding his motorcycle; please wear a helmet! - Sandra
If it's nice enough to ride, I probably won't be bothering with the human-powered bike any longer. I always wear a helmet on my gas-powered bike. - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
As long as we won't have mountains, we Dutch will not wear those things. Otherwise we won't be able to recognise the tourists on bikes. - Ton Zijp
Thanks for sharing - I had a mishap with a car, wasn't wearing a helmet at the time, was lucky. If they don't see you, it doesn't matter either way. Wear the helmet! - Rick Bucich
This isn't as extreme as this but when I fell off my bike onto a sidewalk and broke my arm, I thought I was fine for a while. Later, my dad noticed that the whole front of my helmet was all scratched up and the visor in front was torn off! I realized that if I wasn't wearing my helmet on the 2 minute trip down the road, I probably wouldn't be typing this comment right now! Not that I'd be dead but I would have suffered some head damage, limiting my ability to do most things. - Kevin Lyons
Helmets for cyclists are mandatory in Australia. Still gives me the shudders when I'm travelling and see bareheaded bicyclists on the roads. - Kate Foy

My 16,000th Photo Uploaded to Flickr
16,000 down, 984,000 to go. - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet
Not long to go! - Andrew Trinh
And what a fine one it is! Congrats - Michael Fidler
it'd definitely going to take me a while to get to a million. I'm publishing about 200 photos to flickr a week right now and at this pace it will take 92 years to get there. I'll get the pace up to 400-500 a week in the future though. Better technology should make processing easier and someday my kids will be grown and I'll be able to quit my day job and focus on this even more. The best photos have yet to be taken. - Thomas Hawk
When I think about this I realize your best days are ahead of you. - Russellreno
That is a great photo - Darin aka iGoByDoc
What's your shot/publish ratio? I mean, on average how many shots do you take to produce those you publish? - Yuval Atzmon
atzmon, I probably average about 2,000 shots a week that I shoot. And I'm probably processing 300 or so of those a week at present, so I'm probably keeping about 15%. The other 85% never get processed and are kept in my archives. I'm trying only to process and publish the shots that I think meet a certain quality criteria. - Thomas Hawk
You upload a lot more than I do. I have about 40,000 pictures but only about 2000 uploaded. Mostly because I have not gotten around to processing more. =) - Jauder Ho from twhirl
Wow and Congrats!! - Vox
Dude, you're a machine. - Zee.
Jauder, the good news is that processing will only get easier in the future. I've watched it get better with each successive Adobe release. Lightroom 2.0 is the best processing tool yet. It's not necessarily faster per se though because with more tools there are yet even more ways to tweak a photo hence even more time. But the tools to speed things up are coming too. auto geotagging, better anti dust tech, faster processing speeds, easier online tools with faster broadband are all around the corner. - Thomas Hawk
16,000 ?? Yikes. Cool number. Congrats. - Charlie Anzman
big numbers don't mean squat - Ivan Pope from twhirl

This photo is total awesome. It is made even more awesome by the knowledge that there are 15,999 more photos just as awesome as this one. EDIT: This photo is now my desktop background. :) - Rishabh Mishra (p248)

beautiful, congrats! - Carmen
Awesome!! Keep going Thomas!! beutiful work... YOU are such an inspiration... thanks! - Susan Beebe

Beautiful shot! Congrats for achieving this landmark! - Muhammad Ahmed
Amazing image ,,, TH ... - johnpiercy
Always loved that quote " The best photos have yet to be taken. - Thomas Hawk" - johnpiercy
Congrats, I even don't think I took so many photos in my life. :) - Ferhad Fidan from fftogo
@thomas: Yahoo should be giving Flickr to you for free. You'd do a great job with it. And it would be historical: the first user-generated (company) acquisition :))) - Alberto D'Ottavi from fftogo
Beautiful!!!! - Rafael Montilla
awesome!! - Rhoda Meek
For 1M images you could do a multi-part movie (1080p) miniseries averaging an hour per episode. - Jay Cuthrell
wow from last year, I'm almost at 29,000 photos uploaded to flickr now. - Thomas Hawk
And only 971,000 to go ... :P - Rene Wirtz
That's Awesome! - John Holzer
Keep 'em comin' Thomas! - Charlie Anzman
I guess the metier of 'photo editor' is kaput...or, at least, greatly altered.... - Chris Gulker
You know they are going to delete your account without warning once you hit 999,999, right? :) - Ace
Ace, I hope not, I'd be so pissed. Actually I think alot of what gets me so upset about all the content/account deletion issues is that I really do worry that it actually will happen to me. Flickr staff hates me and they'd *love* to delete my account. I worry that I'll wake up one morning and everything will have been nuked. I suppose that's why I'd like to see them enact the ability to... more... - Thomas Hawk
Holyshit! You have taked just couple of photos... - k00pa
Why your flickr page says 28,974 items ? - k00pa
Because this post is from September last year k00pa :) - Simon Wicks
@Chris Gulker. Someday I hope to work with a photo editor. God knows I need to. I like to think of my Flickrstream today more as the raw material in a lot of ways for future projects. A good photo editor adds tremendous value to shaping a photographer's imagery. - Thomas Hawk

Why is Twitter shutting down in 2012? - Steve Rubel
Plus it will have lots more (Google) Services added to it :-) - Martin Rix (Mrrix32)
@Steve I don't think it means Twitter is shutting down. I think it means Twitter will bar FriendFeed from using its feed ;-) - Rubin Sfadj
This is too kewl - Peter Dawson
Hilarious - may all come to pass before 2018. - Todd McKinney
Love it. But 2018? I'd except to be able to get Friend.com directly through the HUD in my flying car by then... Only silversurfers (like us) would still use "web browsers" in 2018. - Tony Ruscoe
Twitter feed not available? That may come to pass at 10:30. - Bill Bittner
And what's up with "low karma comments"? I thought the karma thing left us in the seventies... but yes, everything comes on cycles... - Alex von Halem
awesome. - Tobias Boonstoppel
You've got the Google thing backwards :) - Paul Buchheit
Hey, I just noticed I'm in the screenshot. :D @Paul: ? What's backwards, where? - Voyagerfan5761
Actually, it missed one important thing - a HUGE ad, taking up the top half of the screen, for a substance that is just as effective as Viagra (which was banned in 2011). - Ontario Emperor
I think Paul's saying that in 2018 ff will own google - j1m
It's comforting that hitting monkeys will still be as popular in 2018 as they are now. - Ginger Makela Riker
One thing they got wrong: by 2012, Paul will have started his own country southwest of Alaska on an artificial island. It'll be called Free Festivusland, and it'll get the top-level domain “ff”. FriendFeed will then be http://ff/ — no dots or coms or nets or orgs. - Amit Patel
@Amit P. ROFL .. very funny - Steven Hodson
@Jason lol :D - Voyagerfan5761
I think the web will be voice and audio driven in 10 years, or at least it will be available. There's even some startup now that can sense nerve pulses to the vocal chords to know what you'll say before you actually say it. - Mike Reynolds
I think comments won't be replaced by nested commented, just like @ in twitter, many people like this. - terababy
Mike Reynolds, now I'm scared. Very scared. I'll get myself in trouble before I actually hear what I'm saying (rather than after). - Ontario Emperor
For some reason, the Facebook deal makes this future user interface look more likely. - Rishabh Mishra (p248)

It's Official: I am Moving from Blogging to Lifestreaming - http://www.steverubel.com/its-off...
Posterous continuous to get insanely useful. They just added auto-posting today to YouTube and Friendfeed. This continuous pipeline of innovation, plus some great advice I got from my friends Stowe Boyd (we talked about Flow when I was in Germany), Jeremiah Owyang (we discussed daily publishing in San Francisco) and Dwight Silverman (one hub, not two says Mr. S), convinced me it's time to make the jump.  This site will become my primary publishing hub - my new home on the web. Meanwhile the spokes will become the social networks and platforms where we all spend time. Today that's Twitter, Facebook and Friendfeed. Tomorrow, who knows. My old site will stay online for the archives but I will not be putting any more content up on the old site. Please update your RSS reader to my new feed. I am excited by the change. After five years of publishing, this seems like the right thing to do. Permalink | Leave a comment  » - Steve Rubel
I love Posterous... very cool app! dead simple and easy to use... email and go! - Susan Beebe
Quite tempted. :) - Mathew A. Koeneker
How does formatting work? If you're just blasting emails into the service, how does it know how to format your posts? Guess no harm in trying it out, but interested in your take. - Kevin Arth
I'll try out Posterous in depth. I'm hoping it could be a solution to blogging that is a lot easier than Wordpress. Then it's possible to incorporate this into a simple social media marketing system for non-technical individuals, like real estate agents, who want a blog but don't want to learn how to blog. - Pat Kitano
I would use Posterous a lot more if it worked with offline blogwriters like Raven or Ecto. Although I know I can blog from email, I like to format my posts and Outlook uses non-standard compliant HTML. - Jon Gosier
Steve: Very cool and kudos, but isn't a Blog a part of a healthy lifestream? - Garin Kilpatrick
@Garin, you bet. There will be the occasional longer posts. - Steve Rubel

Whenever I see the thumbnail of the picture of you with the wrestling belt on, in thumbnail size it looks like a bare midriff, with a HUGE hairy belly button, and my subconscious that completes the image revolts me for a second, forcing me to us the conscious mind to click on it, blow it up to full size and calm my subconscious down, else the subconscious will not let me go on with my day. - Matthew DeVries

How many of you have ditched RSS for Twitter - and if so why?
Steve, I was just about to give up RSS for Twitter, but then a few weeks ago, you wrote that Twitter had peaked, so I decided to just wait until the next thing I'm supposed to give up for the next thing I'm supposed to trade it in for. - Rex Hammock
Rex, you're a good man. - Steve Rubel from IM
for me Twitter supplements my RSS consumption but doesn't replace any of it. Twitter is more about discovery of things I wouldn't normally know about via RSS. - Tac Anderson
I agree, it is more like mining for information on twitter. - Drew Lucas
Don't have time for both RSS and Twitter so I focus on the current conversation over the archive. - Jason Catena
Twitter & Hacker News have taken up most of frequent, distracted attention I used to spend on reading feeds. I still go back to feeds to do my deep reading tho - Kingsley Joseph
I have to agree that RSS has fallen off my radar due to the time I put into Twitter and other Social Media tools (FF). - John Flynn
I second John Flynn's remarks. - Jeff Stannard
I feed social networks with RSS... so if I stop, and everyone else stops... where is the information going to come from? - Bwana ☠
Nope, RSS is still extremely useful especially coupled with #Feedly - Rick Bucich
twitter is snacking, rss is having diner. - Edwin Khodabakchian
Edwin - fully agreed. - Richard Zeidel
I will never ditch RSS. It is too easy and great. I don't check as often as Twitter, but I can save posts and refer back to them when I need to. I can also easily find blogs there, rather than my bookmarks, which is flooded. Twitter is GREAT, but who knows if it will last? MySpace was great once, too. RSS is more stable than a social network, and easier to sort (no hashtags required). - Angela Wilson
I wouldn't. For the Twitter and RSS have different uses. And I wouldn't spam the people that follow me at twitter with links to posts. - Bibi
No way. Never. - Louis Gray
Not ditched, but Twitter's become my primary social RSS. They're different rabbits. - phil baumann
two different things...two different uses. ;o) - Rob Sellen :o)
i use friendfeed for both feedreading and twitterstream. - lodro
I'm just cutting down on number of followers and feeds. Seems to help with managing information overload. - Dave "Freedom 35"
Twitter is too ephemeral... would need some organization (folders/tags/saved-searches) and mark-as-read functionality at the very least for me to even consider it. RSS is essential to me for required reading and for discovery. - LogEx
Not at all, if anything Twitter/Friendfeed etc has helped me find new RSS feeds to add. - Adam Turetzky
That's like hiring the garbage company to DELIVER trash to your door. - Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
if anyone did it, he's an idiot - Zio Bonino
Twitter for Microblogs and Status Updates, Google Reader for regular blogs, Friendfeed for actual conversations! - Dane Findley
Ditching RSS in lieu of Twitter?? What's next, ditching email for DM's? Not a smart move. - Kevin Pruett
I think Kevin just summed it up nicely. I'll just add: The number of websites who provide real-time updates to Twitter is minuscule. When that changes, then we'll talk about swapping RSS for Twitter. - Alexander Grundner
Nope, absolutely not. Twitter serves its purpose as microblogging and link sharing but RSS still has a purpose for me. Not everything I read is shared through Twitter (actually, I should hope not!). If I got all my news through Twitter, it would be more of an echo-chamber than it already is. Further more, I work in marketing. I use RSS to keep up with client industry news and to aggregate information. Twitter cannot do this for me. - Violet Mae Lim
I got sick of reading long blog posts about the best way to develop software.... at least with twitter you get rid of long windedness. :) - Paul Kinlan
i did not. and i won't you can't find in 140 char what a full page gives you - Ouriel Ohayon
I've pushed most of my feeds to Twitter. For me, trying to keep up with RSS was like having another email inbox from hell. Now I catch what I can and let the rest pass over me. http://bit.ly/YQcK5 - Tech Introvert
...i've mostly ditched blogging for Twitter. - .LAG liked that
I have ditched RSS for FriendFeed. I prefer the Real-Time Web. Welcome to the RTW! - Dimitar Vesselinov
I'm with Dimitar... go FF go! - Janice
Everyone! Haven't you heard -- Twitter is dead. Oh wait. I'm confused. RSS is dead. Umm. Steve Gillmor? It's TechCrunch -- it's dead. That's right. - Dave Winer
Feedly + Firefox really makes Google Reader useful, IMHO - .LAG liked that
no way. though i have reduced the number of feeds i actively keep up with. - coffee
++Lag. Love my Feedly plus FF/Twitter. I have cut down on feeds however. - Bonnie Foster
I love my netnewswire. It's all the stuff I've personally asked for rather than the stuff others feel they need to throw at me. - Josh Kinal from twhirl
yup, same here - Jeremiah Owyang
I'm still using my RSS readers a lot. Google Reader on line and Byline on the iPhone. Less "clicks" on the iPhone. - Mike Beck
OK, so this post brought out mostly RSS lovers (which I remain). Yet why is it that some are now railing against RSS? Here's another thought RSS = a standard. We have no standards for status updates and thus Twitter and Facebook are in the driver's seat. RSS is final and stable. - Steve Rubel
Nope. I see different uses in the different services. I like the organization of a reader. and I like your comment about the standards and stability and lack thereof on Twitter and FB. Also, I like to pick my news sources and trust that I am getting something accurate. SkyGrid is a nice combination of real fast / real time and reliable. - Martha
On the contrary, besides using Twitter, I've added lots of RSS from Twitter to Google Reader. - Mike Reynolds
My comment is a bit suggestive because of my work with Alltop. But even so, Twitter could not replace the gens I find via RSS too. - L.P. NEENZ FALEAFINE
Not me. Twitter is still too noisy. - Tamar Weinberg
why ditch anything? - Sheri Fresonke Harper
Sheri- Because people like to talk about this "king" "killing" that "king" and "destroying" this "queen" blah blah blah. ;) In my opinion, one new form of technology or communication doesn't always have to replace another. - Violet Mae Lim
That question is ridiculous. RSS is far easier to manage and customize and can deliver a lot more information. Watching the interests of your social graph on Twitter is great, but far more and higher quality information can be consumed, (re)organized, and aggregated with a good RSS reader. - David Chartier
I'm stuck between using FriendFeed and Google Reader but I defenetely like FF more than twitter for that function! - Brian from BuddyFeed
Still like both. With Twitter I feel like I keep up with individuals better, and catch new stuff earlier than I might anywhere else. Reader still gives me a ton of good reading from all the places I like best though ... - Patrick Jordan
I still use RSS but more for reference. I get the link to the post in Twitter and then go look at the feed - Janet Fouts
I'm still a fan of Netvibes, and I have not ditched RSS for Twitter, I've made some RSS out of Twitter searches, does that count? - Albert Maruggi
FriendFeed replaced RSS for me a while ago. - Thomas Hawk
Ditch RSS for Twitter? Never. RSS is the fuel for the real time web - they're complimentary products. http://bit.ly/10dkr8 - AJ Kohn
I will most likely not ditch ditch rss for twitter, both are good and valuable, but rss is useful since one can't always read it - Justin Yost
Ditched RSS for FriendFeed ;) - LPH™ and his dog P™
I really never understand why you should give up RSS for Twitter. Why? Could someone please explain this über productive idea? - Jan Friman from Nambu
i'm still a heavy Google Reader user. - Alex
The more interesting question may be how many have replaced RSS with FriendFeed... - Josh Street from twhirl
<sigh> I dunno. I see twitter as a subplot of FF and FF is also a subplot. Even slashdot used to be cool. - Derek Lords
Haven't heard Slashdot mentioned in years - Mike Reynolds
Ditching RSS for Twitter will work as the idea that people wouldn't look at paintings once photos came out - shelisrael1
I think there is some confusion here. Are we talking about giving up on the technology that is called RSS, or are we simply talking about switching the platform on which we consume these ie. ditching google reader for friendfeed or twitter. Friendfeed lives on RSS feeds, the links you get on twitter most probably come straight out of someone's rss reader. The question is, if we ditch... more... - Kasper Sorensen
I discover more of value through friendfeed than twitter, really. But once I determine the long term value of a site it goes into my google reader, if it's Really important (i.e. top 10) it goes in my operamini feeds on my phone. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I agree @ron - Justin Yost
it is like dithing your car for fishing: they are not the same. More precisely, Rss gives you focuses attention on the sources of information. Twitter gives you second hand check-it-outs that are possibly not so focused or accurate, but *seem* more urgent because they are in real time. - Michele Costabile
I use RSS, don't like twitter, and seems no reason. - yagami
How many of you have ditched bathing for Twitter - and if so why? - Dave Winer
I ditched porn for Twitter since, you know, it makes so much sense to do so. - Scott Jarkoff
I use both RSS and Twitter. I use Twitter more frequently though. - Donelle
RSS is quite useful, both serve their own purpose - Erik Magraken
this is BS, twitter can't and won't replace RSS, neither will friendfeed for that matter - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Twitter gives me a portal to the author but won't replace RSS - Joe Dawson
I increasingly use Twitter Search rather than Google Search or RSS to find cleantech news to blog about. - Bob Morris (polizeros)
Nopes, Twitter has a long way to go before it replaces RSS. My days begins by reading 500 feeds, imagine how many tweets would I have to go through to get all those news! - Rajtilak Bhattacharjee
Friendfeed can do that. Not twitter - Rohit from twhirl
For ordinary web users who are only interested in a handful of feeds, maybe 10 or 20 then twitter beats a feed reader hands down. Much simpler to use, easy to understand and real time. Plus twitter has the social media/communication features. However power users that are tracking 100 or more feeds need a reader for their research. The google reader / feedly combination is hard to beat for these people. - Adrian
Google reader is evil and must be destroyed. Who has time to sift through 400 unread posts per day? - Tech Introvert
How can Twitter replace a few decent RSS feeds? Not understanding the Twitter love... - George Gray
I don't understand, RSS and Twitter are two different services. Have I missed something? :-) - Kol Tregaskes
I spend time on Twitter where I would have otherwise been in Google Reader. It's easier to follow trending topics on Twitter. - Peter Warnock
did a blog post a while back called 'my network is my search engine' but truth is, probably meant my 'network is one of my rss feeds' - not an either or proposition for me - leigh himel
Many RSS feeds push their content thru Twitter, which makes Twitter a real-time RSS reader (that doesn't act like a horrific email inbox, ahem Google Reader). FF is an even better implementation of this, if only more sites pushed their feeds thru FF. - Tech Introvert
No, they're two different use cases for me. Twitter is real time conversation. RSS is non-real time information. - Ian Betteridge
What Ian said. IMHO, their strengths are so different it would be silly not to use both. - Karen Mohler
If anything, Twitter points me towards more stuff to add to my RSS! - Amie Gillingham
Yeah, what Ian said. I'd just get lost in the info if I got all RSS via Twitter. - Julie Barrett from twhirl
I am using RSS in FriendFeed. What I have ditched is Google Reader. RSS is underlying technology, not an application. We'll keep using that underlyng technology for a long time. We may ditch the readers, but not the RSS itself. - Bora Zivkovic
I haven't ditched sourcing news via RSS for Twitter, but I have subscribed to more news via Twitter and find myself getting it more frequently on twitter. - tekhelet
This isn't the right kind of debate. It's distracting from the fact that both are useful. - William Mougayar
nope, not going to happen. A) twitter doesn't have all the blogs I read B)there's no good aggregation of blog notices - I can't come back 2 days later & find older content. - clarke thomas
For Twitter? No, maybe for Friendfeed in some time. - Diego Espinoza V.
Because I got the gist of the post and a quick link in the same stream. No more reader for over 12 months - derek
i ditched twitter - Marcus Brown
Traditional RSS readers are even more boring than Facebook. Stopped using them a long time ago. I do consume RSS feeds still in FriendFeed but though a socially filtered lifestyle. - Thomas Hawk
I have pretty much ditched RSS for FriendFeed. I use Twitter also. - Bill Romanos
for must part..BUT subscribing via RSS to derivations from Twitter can be useful, for example, I subscribe via RSS to http://www.whatthetrend.com/ . It gives me the day's trends PLUS explanations as to why which is key. Extremely useful to go through just in case I missed something during the day. - Mike Bracco
your followings are your feed source - Human Syndication. spending most of your time on Twitter, you dont have time to switch to RSS. Also, with RSS feeds coming from media companies, news may not break as quickly with human syndication which Twitter provides. With RSS feeds coming from Blogs, the news will have broken out on Twitter prior to that blogger's RSS feed hitting you somehow... more... - iTbay
No. RSS still has a place on my computer (or at least in my web browser). I prefer it for it's easy-to-read aspect and it's speed (Google Reader is awesome). Twitter is for discovery, as is friendfeed. - Amy H.
RSS bankrupcy. Hundreds of blogs unread. By reading Twitter only on the web and not on the phone, and using Twitter search, I get what I get. The rest finds its way, so I don't have to pile up enormous wads of reading in my Google reader. RSS is still absolutely vital, however, for those who block you on Twitter. You search their name, RSS the search results, read them on Google. My new Google read attention space is the ppl like @ajkeen who have blocked me on Twitter. - Prokofy Neva
I subscribe to Twitter hash-tag and keyword searches via RSS and read them in Google Reader. I see the them as complimentary. - Mike Boudreaux
I usually have Google Reader/feedly & TweetDeck open at the same time. - Jason R. Hunter
Hundreds of RSS feeds and no time to consume; Twitter better fits my lifestyle. Plus, the community that surrounds me shares very similar interests, so I can count on useful info from them. - Paul Chaney
"Having RSS feed" =/= "using Twitter", so I read the RSS of a lot of sites every day via NetNewsWire. - Rick Cogley
I use RSS to read Twitter (meaning) I can follow some people on Twitter via Google RSS reader (without really following them). Does that make sense? - Doug Vos
Brett Kelly
Sounds like there's a market for a tool that will create imaginary friends for all of somebodys Twitter friends that aren't FF users. Could be a fun thing to write. Does the API allow it?
Hehe, I've thought about doing this. :-D - Damon Cortesi
I'd use that. I'm trying to like FriendFeed, but such a small percentage of the people I follow on Twitter are using it that it's too quiet here. - Jason Clarke
Jason - that's precisely the problem I'm having. Wonder if any of the heavy hitters have any suggestions (other than brow-beating Twitter friends into joining FF). - Brett Kelly
A brief look at the API shows they don't support it. Bummer. - Damon Cortesi
I would love to have something similar to integrate my RSS feeds (Even though RSS is suddenly so old school). In fact I think it is the weakness of friendfeed that it is too focused on friend and not enough on feed. Personally I don't make a big distinction between a person or an organisation they both sources I want to keep track of. My dream combination would be an even closer integration between FriendFeed and Feedly. - Carl Beeth
Agreed! at this point, most of the content I'm pulling into FF is from Twitter - Rick Reynolds
The only thing I feel like I'm missing in FF is the Twitter updates from people who don't use FF (and this makes up the vast majority of my follow list). If I had that, I could theoretically do all of my Twitter stuff from here (which would make me happy). - Brett Kelly
Sarah Perez
I'm still not sold on the Friendfeed redesign. It's the color scheme that really bugs me.
Yeah its not primary trio but its got part of Ireland's flag so it can't be all bad. ;) - Melanie Reed
YES YES YES. Thank you. Finally somebody agrees with me. - mike fabio
Or better yet, something user-configurable - Craig Eddy
Bret hinted to 'themes' launching soon - Zee.
I like the redesign but agree with Craig - user-configurable would be excellent. I'm hoping Zee has good intel! : ) - Julie
Ah, yes the ubiquitous "themes" of Social Media and SaaS applications. Then the inevitable palette of custom designers come forth for ocular salvation. ;) - Melanie Reed

Nice, Meryn. The pale pink highlighter is always a nice addition to making reading easier on the eye - Melanie Reed
there isn't already a greasemonkey script with magical color picker and background img changer out yet? - rob friedman
@Rob - yeah, but I can't (easily) use gmonkey in chrome, my default browser - Sarah Perez
yeah, I don't like the background. Should be white - Chad Albert
Jason agreed. I haven't yet decided why I liked the classic FF, but after two days of this one, I'm ready to go classic again. The long threads on a centered column are overwhelming to sort through: this comes from a lot of experience grading student forum posts. I think Dave is right. We're losing something here while FF tries to become a "better" Twitter. Twitter design works for one... more... - Melanie Reed
Melanie why equate FF with Twitter? There's no likeness whatsoever. Main column on the left, indices on the right = a classic. - ianf ⌘
Sarah, we need Lindsey's design: http://ff.im/1XAeV with AJ's commenting/search term colouring. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Kol I dig Lindsey's design a lot more also! In fact, can they hire her to release that design asap? - Corvida
@Kol: No kidding, Lindsey's design is lovely. This one makes me barf. - Sarah Perez
Amen, the current UI design is amateurish and will undercut the features - RAPatton
Ianf ⌘ Thanks for your thoughts! I equate FF with Twitter because a SBS comparison shows the similarities + there has been a complaint driven seg that has suggested in previous memes that FF follow the Twitter model. The gray background tends to distract, making the "left" column appear centered and contained in the spacescape. I agree that Lindsey's design is more "form follows function" and is superior to what we have now. - Melanie Reed
I think the layout is good but yes the colors and graphics need some more work. - Mark Koberlein
The old Friendfeed UI was crisp and clean; a delight. The new UI is an amateurish jumble. - Sean McBride
Give it time ... You'll get used to it. - Charlie Anzman
I hated the FriendFeed redesign too, now I'm used to it and like it. Really needs custom backgrounds/colors though. - David Cancel
@Sean, old FF design –not UI– suffered from many ailments, but the two most severe were inability to reflow text in response to narrowed text column (not that you personally ever had the need for it), and bad scalability with bigger fonts than "usual" (ditto). In short, unlike new design where both those not-so-uncommon conditions are well catered for, the old was largely inaccessible... more... - ianf ⌘
Lindsey, course you didn't. Wait another 30 years –I don't know your age, nor do I need to know it– then you'll see. What's at the heart of this unreasonable kvetching is whether the FF (and by implication any other media) should be designed for accessibility to all, or just to some 20/20 vision-elite. Also, your mockup was nice in places, but let's not confuse mere reskining with design. - ianf ⌘
From what I can see and deduce, potentially in error, present FF design is something that the team assembled as a lowest common denominator layout that would pass basic usability studies with approval. I don't think it has been subjected to any extended usability studies, early days yet, but we have nowhere to go from here but "up." All the same, I hope they'll stay more on the... more... - ianf ⌘
@Melanie <http://tinyurl.com/cfye6n> <http://friendfeed.com/sarahin...> - you can chant "form follows function" all you like, but how exactly is this ditty of relevance here? Lindsey's single static display mockup <http://tinyurl.com/cbsu6x> is not more functional than present one, formally but an... more... - ianf ⌘
Ianf ⌘ Any reading form needs to take in the traditional "usability" sense. It is extremely hard on the eyes to read from a smaller column than a wider one. This forum is about reading information and reading that information at a pretty advanced rate. I'm not one for rampant use of hidden menus but I could see them here as one possible solution to giving grace to the reader's screen.... more... - Melanie Reed
I don't like the gray background but I know there's a userscript out there (AJ Batac I believe) that makes it more palatable. Haven't gotten around to it myself. *tsk tsk* - AJ Kohn
Why, Lindsey, usability studies is not enemy of real-time information, it's a science of gathering and evaluating usage data, so that insights may be gained from it, theses formulated and later verified. Righty applied (or executed) usability studies translate directly into $ (etc), due to savings in development and conduct of business practices. I would imagine that the FF team,... more... - ianf ⌘
Melanie, surely you must be joking "It is extremely hard on the eyes to read from a smaller column than a wider one." Not joking? OK, I get it now, you don't know what you're talking about... may I therefore bid you good night and recommend some reading just before bedtime? Maybe they just need to implement variable CSS so we can change the colors - LarchOye
Yea control over it would be great. - Andy Ciordia
"Target audience," heh, I can recognize website designer when I stumble over Lindsey ;-)) FF can not afford to cater to any specific, if broad, target group, for them it's literally "the public @large." Anything they do must scale well, and not only in technical sense, but metaphysical one as well (=weighting floods of momentary disaffection because of some feature against e.g. server... more... - ianf ⌘
i think it is the font....old font was better. - Pokai

Twitter & Facebook could harm moral values, scientists warn - http://digg.com/general...
Interesting theory, but it brings a lot of intellectual baggage along with it. It seems like their definition of morality is essentially emotionalism, that is, that morality is just having feelings about issues. That clashes pretty strongly with my ideas about objective morality. I do agree that it may make finding time for moral analysis more difficult, though. - Stefan Moluf
Good news, at least, that the economic downturn apparently hasn't yet had an impact on the 'spurious scientific study' market.. - Andy Connell
Everything Bad Is Good for You: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... - zeroinfluencer
I'm not sure I buy into this. The theory is that things happen "too fast" for you to reflect: that you read the story and then its on to another story. But my experience is that you tend to move with your community, and pause to discuss in detail those stories which are important to you - every bit as much as you would in real life, and perhaps more so. You get more perspectives. I think the challenge is that now we are aware of MORE bad things that happen, because we are more connected. This is not... - Justin Long
...an issue of FB or twitter or FF, but of information overload, it seems to me. - Justin Long
O ye of little faith in the overall human race. The daily barage of negative news is far more harmful and make humans more indeferent that 140 characters on what I'm doing ever will. - Monique
That's amusing, 'according to researchers' as if they're studying a phenomenon. Researchers DESIGNED it this way! - Hive 2.0
People who think this is B.S. need to brush up on their McLuhan. Media changes your view of the world. "Our conventional response to all media, namely that it is how they are used that counts, is the numb stance of the technological idiot." If you check out the press release, the researchers actually say nothing about Twitter or Facebook but rather are interested in how long it takes people to respond to different emotional stimuli. http://bit.ly/VRy99 The oversimplification in this thread just bears it out - Nathan Rein
"...If a new technology extends one or more of our senses outside us into the social world, then new ratios among all of our senses will occur in that particular culture. It is comparable to what happens when a new note is added to a melody. And when the sense ratios alter in any culture then what had appeared lucid before may suddenly become opaque, and what had been vague or opaque will become translucent..." Hey, I can quote McLuhan too! And me just a goddam oversimplifier.. who knew? - Andy Connell
Ha. Touché. Sorry, I overdid it with my comment. I take it back. Still and all, I wouldn't dismiss this research as "spurious" right off the bat. It's a little more complicated than the whole "Google is making us stupid" business. - Nathan Rein
You're right, of course. - Andy Connell

Why Engadget is blocking the DiggBar | Joshua Topolsky - http://www.joshuatopolsky.com/2009...
Yea, i had people complain in a chat room when i posted an article form digg, they couldnt see real url, just the shorten one. - Fee501st
They should've just done a bookmarklet and/or Greasemonkey script. Then you can have the Digg bar while leaving the address bar in tact. Which, I believe, is everyone's biggest gripe. - Paul Reynolds
framewars. that's simply oddly old. nobody learns from past mistakes ? - k0nan
Paul Reynolds: It's not the only gripe. Aside from not wanting Digg's URL taking the place of mine in the address bar, I refuse to allow someone else's frame to lounge across the top of my site. - Tom Harrison
Paul Reynolds: I agree that a browser extension would have been a better way to implement this toolbar. If a user has gone to the trouble of downloading and installing such an add-on, fine. But it's quite a different story to have casual visitors following these shortened addresses and browsing around my site with a Digg URL and a Digg-branded frame sitting above the fold. - Tom Harrison
What's interesting is AFAIK Facebook has been doing the framing thing for a while. I think Digg probably cribbed the idea from them and tied it together with a URL shortening service. Probably for an active Digg user, it's a great feature and experience but they've obviously stepped on the toes of their most valuable audience: content generating sites. - Paul Reynolds
I will say from a FriendFeed user aspect, I like it because I can go straight to the source site and digg it if I choose to. - Paul Reynolds
Noticed DiggBar the other day. Extremely irritating, in more ways than one. - Martin Häger
As an aside, no one gripes much about the Facebook Bar, which I find to be at least equally annoying as the DiggBar, and sometimes even more so, since closing the Facebook Bar means Facebook spitefully seems to redirect you through the slowest possible servers to render a page. - Mike Nayyar

What the hell do you mean a "DELAY" in the campaign?!? That is silly. You don't press "pause" on the process involved in choosing the next leader of the world's most powerful country. The economic situation sucks, and it will still suck weather of not you dodge this debate.
It's a process. That sounds complicated. - Oldengrey (Jay)
This is showing nothing but weakness. Step up and prove that you want to lead this country by showing the people that you can't even handle more than one pressing matter at a time. Maybe now his supporters will open their eyes and see what this guy is really all about. - ::Kristen::

Kristen, I disagree. This is brilliant politics. Numbers heading south, caribou barbies bounce has gone, you can't say anything right, and your opponent looks the man. So how do you stop the bleed? you suspend the campaign 2 weeks into the financial crisis and call for support in the name of the greater good. Brilliant, brilliant move. Obama looks like he doesn't care if he doesn't join McCain, at least among swinging voters targeted by the GOP...because THAT'S the line they'll run - Duncan Riley
total political stunt! Lame McCain. - Brian Ries
I don't think this is going to work out for McCain. It's a stumble. - Jason Wehmhoener
Duncan... the counter to that is: "Somethings require you to drop everything and give it your full and immediate attention, like Katrina or 911, somethings don't. Knowing which is which is presidential" - Johnny Worthington
What is really wacky is the notion that one of the anti-regulatory politicians most responsible for the current financial crash (John McCain) would have anything useful to contribute to its solution. McCain should stay as far away from meddling with this mess as possible. And can you imagine Sarah Palin bringing her brain power and expertise to bear on fixing this? That's a hilarious image. - Sean McBride
Ummm.... how to say this? Americans might want to reconsider using the phrase "world's most powerful country". No longer true... - Paul Denlinger
David Letterman >> “What are you going to do if you’re elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We’ve got a guy like that now!” - Glenn Batuyong
David Letterman >> “He can’t run the campaign because the economy is cratering? Fine, put in your second string quarterback, Sara Palin. Where is she?” - Glenn Batuyong
@John Although it (sadly?) seems a rare occurrence, I agree. - MVB (Grinch of FF)
Even if this WAS a 911-type issue, what is McCain gonna do? Orchestrate a group hug? It's just silly when you have a private jet and act like you're going to miss something. - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
I was gonna say they are never really out of touch from the Senate cause they have things like mobiles and email but... you know... - Johnny Worthington
DELAY ... interesting move. If Obama agrees, he's a follower; if he resists he's a jerk for ignoring the common good (think fix huge financial crisis). So now McCain presuposses that the fate of the US economy is in HIS hands?! Why didn't he say, Hey Obama join me so we can tackle this as a team, we need all the best men at the table - Susan Beebe
Exactly Susan! The USA is at it's best when we all work to solve problems together, putting aside our petty differences. - MVB (Grinch of FF)
Susan: I think McCain did offer that to Obama. And Obama said no, game on. - Oldengrey (Jay)
Honestly I don't mind them stopping for a little bit if they are going to try and help figure out this troubled economy. But, they still need to have ALL the debates. - Mathew™ one of a kind
On Second thought...this scheme is so he can bail out of the debate - running scared! fixing the economy = excuse! - Susan Beebe
Matthew... exactly. - Johnny Worthington
Obama doesn't understand what the big deal is. He thinks all you have to do is vote "Present" on the bailout and go on campaigning. - Oldengrey (Jay)
The trembling and trepidatious McCain camp is also trying to delay or ditch the upcoming Palin debate -- see Andrew Sullivan's blog today. What could McCain possibly contribute to fixing a mess which he helped to create? - Sean McBride

@rahsheen ROFL why did diddy say that was his john mccain t-shirt? saw that in an MTV promo. i almost had a moment when i liked diddy after seeing that. - tiffany
it took years to get into this mess, and it will take years to get out of it. neither the process of defining the bailout terms or voting on them is going to change anything immediately - and neither of these guys have the economic bona fides to substantially directly improve the legislation anyway. suggesting to take time out here is lame the debate must go on! - Jon Price
The American family doesn't get to call 'time out'. The car breaks down they figure out a way to get to work and to get the kids to and from school or soccer practice. What exactly is McCain himself going to do to wrestle this to the ground? Is he going to contribute more than those who are actually on the Banking Committee? - AJ Kohn
@faboo: you nailed it. wonder who will sort out the *real* timeline. either way, McCain's remarks are unilateral and not bipartisan. - MikeAmundsen
