praying and preying @ the pump? - http://marketingmisfit.squares...
I wasn't thrilled to have this preying mantis hovering over the gas pumps OK, call me an idiot but I'm one of those peeps who are not very bug friendly. Sorry. The truth is that bugs give me the willies. So when I pulled up to this Leesburg, Virginia gas pump and noted I was being watched every nano-second by this preying mantis ... surely you can imagine just how UNhappy I was ... I *definitely* was not thrilled at all. That bug was watching my every movement -- from inserting my check card and selecting the gas grade to pumping the gas and getting back in the car. Trust me, the best thing this bug did was stay put. Would have been a complete fiasco if it had decided to fly on top of me or something ... - Mayra Ruiz-McPherson

rental negotiations break down due to one teenager too many??? - http://marketingmisfit.squarespace.com/wv...
sadly, this cute house won't be ours so the rental hunt continues search for new rental home continues ... or not Well, we had found a cute little home in downtown Charles Town and all was a green light to move forward, move in and have a happy ending. Sadly, that's not how things worked out. - Mayra Ruiz-McPherson

Moving is stressful. The disarray, the labor and the cleaning is always such a massive undertaking.Everywhere I look it's toys and boxes ... and boxes and toys ... our move is just around the corner! Even though I'm excited to move into our new rental, the arduous, physical part of moving is something I'm not really looking forward to. And seeing my life compartmentalized into box after box ... well, it kinda makes me reflect on where I've been ... and wonder about where I'm headed ... - Mayra Ruiz-McPherson

"ooooh mom, you just don't get it ... do you??" So here's Ms. Amanda ... with that wonderful "Whatever mom!!" expression on her face. I get that look about 3.5 times a day or so on average. "mother you are so disturbed ... it's not even funny!" (well, ya, ok ... it is!) Man, I remember telling my mom she didn't get it either back in the day. And now here I am faced with my own words from oh some 20+ years ago. In case you are wondering ... YES ... I feel old! :) - Mayra Ruiz-McPherson

first charles town marketing & design direct mailing to go out - http://marketingmisfit.squarespace.com/wv...
I'm super excited to be sending out my very first targeted direct mailing out to local area small businesses. The enlarged post card being sent out has a very simple message to area coffee shops, bakeries, inns, restaurants and delis within 30-minute driving distance: how can I help? I'm looking to help local dining or food-related establishments with table menu design work. Maybe someone needs outdoor signage? Perhaps another place needs a take-out redesigned or a coffee shop needs a small new web site. - Mayra Ruiz-McPherson

girls spend sunday reading @ bam - http://marketingmisfit.squares...
So what do teenage girls like to read about? During my Books-a-Million (BAM) stint yesterday afternoon, the difference between what my two girls like to read about is absolutely stark and more polar opposite than chocolate and vanilla. Jessie My stepdaughter Jessie likes to read basically *anything* related to the movie or book series Twilight. And people, I do mean ANYTHING and everything. Lately, she's also into memorabilia with Michael Jackson, too. Amanda And Ms. Amanda ... well she's really funny. She's 2 years younger than Jessie and starting her freshman year in high school in about 3-4 weeks but is already hitting the "Career" and "College" sections in search of what she should be when she grows up :) Amanda spent her BAM time looking up scholarships, college majors and career salaries. See???? I told you .... *total* opposites these two! But opposites attract, don't they not?? (Answer: not always LOL *trust* me!!) :) - Mayra Ruiz-McPherson

Spent most of today in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and while I'm up there, I always have to hit up local pizza joint D&B Pizza. This is one of those "hole in the wall" kind of pizza joints. There's absolutely nothing fancy at all about the place but man is the pizza there gooooooooood!!! Had a great time with the kids and hubby. Left Pennsylvania with too much pizza in my tummy which means I definitely have to double up on the "Buns of Steel" video workouts this week :) - Mayra Ruiz-McPherson

So far this summer hasn't been all that bad Typically, summer is my worst season. The boiling heat and humidity are hardly my friends. But the weather this summer has been very mild. In fact, many days have been downright enjoyable with cool breezes and just-right heat. And I'm a sucker for rain. Unlike a bunch of people who hate rain, I can't get enough of it. This season has beyond-exceed my rain expectations, which has been an unexpected surprise. In addition to favorable weather, I've also had the good fortune of staying quite busy professionally. Got a handful of new clients and a string of smaller but fun projects underway. Summer will soon be coming to a close and I wonder what the fall and winter will bring and how I will taper off my 2009. Back to school is just around the corner, too. Every year, it seems, the seasons come and go faster than I can keep up with them. As they say, time flies when you're having fun... - Mayra Ruiz-McPherson

charmed and romanced by those seductive carolinas - http://marketingmisfit.squares...
Well, as shared recently, I've returned from spending several days in South and North Carolina. This go-round (previous trips to the Carolinas are almost always just passing through), I spent about two days at a lovely resort, the Kingston Plantation, right on Myrtle Beach (see the balcony pic of me above? You can't see the ocean view that well but trust me, it was so nice to see that ocean horizon all day long for 2.5 days straight!!). Then as my family and I headed back up north, we drove half of the North Carolina shore line on Route 17N, stopping at Wrightsville Beach for about two hours to relax and stretch our legs a bit. Wrightsville beach is from heaven Yes, it's no Hawaii but the Wrightsville Beach coastline in this part of North Carolina (near Wilmington) is breathtaking. The ocean was a more of a clear aqua than the waters in Myrtle Beach; the water there seemed darker (you couldn't see your toes in the water @ Myrtle). I wished I had more time in NC. I had really hoped to... - Mayra Ruiz-McPherson

relaxed + unplugged over memorial day weekend - http://marketingmisfit.squares...
A quick note to say that I spent 99.99% of my Memorial Day weekend completely *offline* which I believe is a record-breaking event for me to be off the computer for three days straight. My husband, however, is referring to my "record" as more of a miracle :) The offline time was nice and definitely needed ... but I'm afraid that now getting back online has created a mountain of work and inbox backlog :) In the end, the time off the Internet was refreshing. My brain and eyeballs were in need of the off-digital break and the holiday weekend was used to catch up on a bunch of other, non-marketing projects which have sat in my personal "to do" cue. Glad to be back ... and hoping everyone had a safe, fun Memorial Day weekend. - Mayra Ruiz-McPherson

Just a quick note to share how saddened I am that I've lost my beat up, seen-better-days-but-loyal-as-hell Saturn SW1 station wagon from 1995. I laid it to rest, so to speak, at a tow truck junkyard graveyard for has-been autos yesterday afternoon. It was only just this past Sunday when my Saturn SW1 and I were on a grocery outing at Wal-Mart. En route home, I was in an accident which resulted in the death of my Saturn. The other driver involved in the incident, a real nice guy, was an auto body mechanic who joined me alongside the wreckage as we awaited the cops. During our wait, we talked and he gave me some advice: my Saturn was not worth rescuing given the mileage and age. The thousands it would require to fix and repair would be better suited to put down on another vehicle. - Mayra Ruiz-McPherson
