I think that could very well be coming, but in a slightly different form. That is, Gmail proper is a client for email, but Buzz is a client for social activity. Instead of having another tab for FriendFeed, Buzz would simply and seamlessly sync everything, including comments and attribution, with FriendFeed (and Facebook) via WebFinger/Salmon/ActivityStreams/etc.

I think they should just add header tags and use SMTP standard to do it. If specific header tags are in place, then Gmail adapts.

I don't see how Salmon couldn't be used for this. Salmon ideally could be used to push comments into the e-mail, couldn't it? Or am I misunderstanding what Salmon does?

Paul, good point - that does limit to just a comment-oriented structure. Maybe they could use the Facebook API code at http://developers.facebook.com/opensou... to implement Canvas pages for e-mail. ;-) An FBML tag could tell it where to put the message body.

The basic idea is that the inbox structure is useful, and as Buzz has demonstrated, it's useful for more than just email, so why not open up the inbox to third-party apps. BTW, we actually prototyped something like this for FriendFeed (open the feed to other apps), but never completed it enough to ship. I think it still has a lot of potential though.

Hey Paul, you guys should look into the Kynetx platform. With one platform you can create extensions across multiple browsers that re-organize the viewing experience. So, even without Google allowing you to alter it, you can allow users to alter it with just a simple install of a Facebook extension for their browser. You guys modify the experience, users get comments in their Gmail for FriendFeed/Facebook, and everyone's happy. No need to wait for Google for that.

It's 20 years later and Access still has no replacement as a RAD data-driven all-in-one, copy&paste-datasets tool with really low barrier to entry usability that ramps up to a reasonably powerful integrated scripting interpreter, and is effectively one 90% of corporate desktop computers by default. It gets a bad rap for cases of square peg in round hole application, but so does anything that's convenient and widely available.

Why would you even expect Access to use 8 cores? All programs use a single CPU by default unless somebody spends lots of time to make it scalable to more. SQL Server, Oracle, and DB2 have such people. Low-end DBs like Access, SQLite, and MySql don't.

Um, considering the fixes Facebook's making to innodb lock contention, I'm pretty sure that mysql will use multiple cores (for multiple concurrent queries, not executing a single query across cores, afaik).

Micah: Jim is correct. MySql can only use lots of cores if you are running lots of queries, so it would have no advantage over Access in this situation.

Just made my first Google Voice overseas call via Wi-Fi on my DROID. Wow, I'm impressed. Voice quality was amazing, couldn't tell the difference between that and a regular phone call. Try it.

Ummm I used the Google Voice app. You can download it from the Android Market, you'll need a Voice account with credit in it to make the call. On Android 2.* you can tell Google Voice to automatically handle international calls. Which means once you have a data connection all you have to do is hit "Send" and the rest is handled by the Voice app.

Ummm ... they've supported outbound calling from the day I joined. Once you download the GV app you can tell it to handle all outgoing international calls.

Nice idea. Pity that it only supports a HTTPS interface, not surprising at that cost though (the software that runs the filesystems on the NetApp and other devices isn't exactly cheap to write). Anyone see if they quoted transfer speeds? I'm wondering what impact the four SATA cards each with SATA multipliers on them has when it comes to access speeds.

Russ: It runs Debian. If you were rolling your own (and they don't sell these units), you could turn on NFS or some other protocol (CIFS, iSCSI). They only use HTTP because it's cloud storage. NFS license is a major expense on NetApp, but all the major Linux distributions can act as NFS servers, CIFS servers, and probably iSCSI targets.

Andy: I know that you could do that on them but it leaves the problem of what to do with the storage. You could merge the 3 volumes into an LVM VG but the performance could become an issue with any load on it. Fascinating article; but more questions: "In rough terms, every time one of our customers buys a hard drive, Backblaze needs another hard drive." -- so what happens when a drive fails; how much redundancy is there? What happens when a meteorite destroys the whole building; is there off site backup too? (I know this *is* the off-site backup, but still...) I wonder how much data flows in and out over time. Maybe I should just read their website.

Yes the effective usable space is less than half total capacity, but for backups -- which will sooner or later be used to restore something -- I prefer data integrity over usage efficiency.

This philosophy collapses when you have real gridlock though; if all the lanes are clogged with stopped (or very slow moving) traffic and you try to employ this technique, you just end up pissing off the cars trapped behind you because you are going 5mph while everyone else is going 10.

It's simply courteous and defensive driving. There should be space between cars for safety. And there's no reason to close ranks to not allow others in. We're all going in the same direction with the same goal. If you'd like others to be courteous, always be courteous yourself.

It's kind of obvious.. stop and go causes problems (and wrecks), even if it does take you longer, it doesn't FEEL longer because you aren't gas/break/gas/break, so less stressful drive. On the flip side, you think this guy driving slow (and not keeping the traffic pace) will cause someone else to slam him in the rear?

A few people already mentioned it above, but let me also say that this technique will not work in heavily trafficked roads. I've spent time in cities like Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Bangkok and you just can't leave a large gap between you and the car in front of you. First they will get filled by other cars really really quickly, and second you will just piss off the cars behind you.

My wife and I debate this, because I sometimes do this myself. Stop and go traffic seems silly, when throughput would be higher if people left enough space between cars to absorb some of the braking. I practice a type-A version of this in non-stop-and-go traffic, I'd call "driving Parkour", basically, I tend to drive over the speed limit, but I leave large gaps, and when I need to slow down, I avoid hitting my brakes and try to led friction/drag slow my car down before I have to hit my breaks. I look far ahead and try to plot out if I need to switch lanes in order to maintain speed...

I always keep lot of room in front of my car for my safety but I think it takes lot of room and creates longer line.

While the line may be longer the actual distance you travel isn't any greater; you use less gas; your breaks will last longer; you're less likely to be involved in a crash and in fact it has an almost negligible affect on your travel time. Yes it is "slower" but on my 50 mile commute the difference is maybe a couple of minutes.

I used to drive like this, until my commute changed to one that had more traffic lights. Then I realized that letting cars in front of me didn't make 1 second per car difference, it could make 10's of minutes, because I'd often miss traffic light cycles. I wish it wasn't the case - I guess it's going to depends on your commute.

I bet it's the Gdrive after I've just paid for an extra 10GB storage on Google. Would be cool to be able to access all my files from any google app, so I could add a picture from picassa webalbum or embed a video of mine/ favourited without having to go to the other site and copy a URL. That's a really interesting idea, Gabe. It seems to go a bit against the drive that Google Apps will reduce the need for IT departments though, so I doubt it.

I am torn between the multi-column Nambu (which has translate feature) and the more minimalist (but with plenty features under the covers) Tweetie. Am sticking with Tweetie for a few days to give it a chance, since Nambu has been a big favourite for a while.

Bob: I like the "take over your screen" approach of TweetDeck better. Why? I have a whole computer dedicated to running it. Nambu is interesting, but I got used to TweetDeck and didn't see much of a reason to switch.

Mike: Don't think Twitter will ever buy a client. Especially one without a Windows component. Robert: I really like Nambu so far. I've never really gotten into Tweetdeck, something about the UI is weird. Tweetie looks pretty cool but the lack of groups is a huge problem for me.

I prefer desktop applications for almost everything, but I thought I was in the minority on that. Everyone seems more interested in web-based mail/IM, but dedicated applications for Twitter are so often trumpeted. I'm not sure what to think about that, but I know I'd like to see a really nice application for XMPP(does Twitter still support this?) and SIP that is extensible. AIR is a memory hog, so Tweetdeck et al. are not acceptable.

What about setting up groups (re:Tweetdeck) so you can organize your twitter feed? That seems like that is the one thing that is missing.

Leather, OAuth is still *very* beta. I have a hard enough time with the stuff Twitter has that's not in beta, but until we can expect not to have the code changed every week it doesn't make sense to implement OAuth. It's still very buggy.

Stay: Say what you will, but my understanding is that Twitter's OAuth is 'textbook' with respect to the spec. Not sure past experience is relevant in this context.

Regarding the lack of groups. From what I've seen @atebits holds values in certain things (e.g. defaulting to via: rather than RT). However he did make RT an option in the end, so perhaps he'll do the same for groups? Anyway. I'm looking forward to this - anything to get away from AIR apps, though I use Twitterfall most of the time anyway.

Robert: I have a big thing against Air (and other such "bloat tools"), so would always choose a native app like Nambu or Tweetie. If you opt for the multi-column mode of Nambue (and you can choose a more "Tweetie-fied" look if you prefer) then you get something that looks (to me) a lot like Tweetdeck and certainly fills your monitor

I, like many others, love Nambu. Since Nambu is already thinking ahead and planning for future FriendFeed support, I think I'll keep using it. :)
