Two big patches for 2.9 just went in. [… - http://wpdevel.wordpress.com/2009...
Interested to see Viper's blog on oEmbed. I like to size my videos for a certain width and am not sure how I'd get that with that single url embed. Is this .com or .org? - beersage
It's .org. And it adds fields to specify max width/heights in the Media options. - Otto
You can specify a width in the options, or it'll use your theme's width. You can also do a manual generic embed and manually specify height width. I'm sure his post will cover all this. - Mark Jaquith from email

@om http://www.ilounge.com/index... No way I'm carrying a 10.7 inch screen around with me everywhere. Sounds like an at-home device for most, if true.
I don't see how it's any different than carrying around a laptop. This thing might be thinner. - Otto
I don't carry a laptop around everywhere. I slip an iPhone into my pocket. Unless I'm going swimming or getting married, I can pretty much have an iPhone in my pocket. If it's not pocketable, it might as well be a laptop, as far as portability is concerned. - Mark Jaquith

"While we should decry arbitrary private discrimination, it shouldn't be considered criminal. So to answer the title of this link, it's not "OK," but it is certainly a case where the State should not intervene. Private property rights are trump. "" I think it would be wise for people who truly care about accessibility to take a closer look at the so-called “experts” who are participating on their behalf, and to understand exactly what these people are proposing. It’s true that some of their proposals have not been adopted, but it’s not because some cartoonishly monocled villain enjoys being mean to them. It’s because the proposals are insane. Obama: A breathtaking beginning - http://digg.com/politic...
""blind veneration of the market" ? Complete and utter bollocks. Bush said, and I quote: "I've abandoned free-market principles to save the free-market system." That's not veneration of the market, that's veneration of a managed economy, to the detriment of the market. Please don't make Bush the poster boy for free exchange of ideas and goods... he's anything but." - Mark Jaquith

"What is more important: Preserving current ice levels (no more, no less), or preserving freedom of choice? It's not a trick question, but it's one you'll have to answer if your environmental goals involve making people change instead of just urging them to change." - Mark Jaquith

"Ohio used to be a glacier. We'll adapt. Whatever happens, it's going to take a really, really, really, really, really long time to do it. This isn't weather we're talking about, it's climate change. The idea that a hundreds or thousands or tens of thousands of years long process should (or even can) be in any way affected by something as transient as politics is absurd and completely self-absorbed. Obama Win Causes Obsessive Supporters To Realize How Empty Their Lives Are | The Onion - http://www.theonion.com/content...
I've wondered about this effect myself. Obama doesn't really stand for any solid principles, so now that he's no longer a cause in and of himself, where do his rabid supporters go to find the meaning in their lives? - Mark Jaquith
Mark Jaquith
McCain implies that if Obama wins and we withdraw from Iraq, our troops are dishonorable. So much for "support our troops."
I really doubt he means that the troops are dishonoring anyone or anything. If anything he may mean the American people would be dishonoring them. Just my guess. - Josh Haley
He says they should "come home in victory and honor, and not in defeat" (meaning not anytime soon). It implies that they come home in dishonor if they come home before he thinks they should. Whether that is their dishonor, or us dishonoring them, I can't say, but neither is the case. Our troops don't come and go of their own volition. They didn't send themselves to Iraq. Their honor doesn't hinge on troop movements. - Mark Jaquith

Campaign management is a good proxy for how you'd run your administration. By all accounts, Obama has run a very strong campaign. - AJ Kohn
Not by "all accounts" AJ. - eggsy
If McCain's campaign is any indication at all of how he would run the country, then this election should be a landslide for Obama. - jcunwired
Let's see: Obama started his career in the home of a terrorist, his campaign benediction was given by a hate-monger, and he has ACORN committing election fraud for him. Yup, a good indication (just another Chicago politician) - Robert Hafer
Guess that means Al Sharpton would be a good president. He's run several campaigns. - Andrew Leyden
"run" or "ruined"? - April Russo (app103)
Any more refuted talking points in your coffer, Robert Hafer? - jcunwired
Let's see, the last president had a lot more experience and let's see what he did? Oh, yeah, became the worst president EVER. Obama is a Senator. Taught at law school. Community Organizer. But it doesn't matter what I think. I'm just tired of people like Hafer who pull this kind of misrepresentation. Go hang out with Joe the Plumber. - Robert Scoble
@Robert: Really? ACORN is committing election fraud? Who identifies the bogus registrations? Do fraudulent registrations wind up as votes? There is plenty of real documentation on this if you're willing to look. - AJ Kohn
Rufted by spin doctors, but no less true - Robert Hafer

So your sating that Bill Ayers isn't a terrorist, Rev. Wright isn't a hate-monger and ACORN isn't committing voter fraud? Or perhaps Obama refuses to release records of his associations because he has nothing to hide. - Robert Hafer
John McCain was the keynote speech for ACORN in 2006 http://www.youtube.com/watch... ...and earlier lent his support to them in the 1990s - Glenn Batuyong
Bill Ayers doesn't matter. Rev Wright doesn't matter. ACORN doesn't matter. Obama's relationships are benign. Move. On. - Christopher Galtenberg
@AJ Kohn why commit registration fraud if not for the purpose of election fraud? - Robert Hafer
AJ: did you know that McCain supported Acorn? Watch this: http://www.boingboing.net/2008... - Robert Scoble
That's a silly metric. Obama's qualifications aren't his accomplishments, because he has precious few worth putting up for scruitiny. Obama's qualifications, like him or hate him, are his intelligence, and his fresh (though increasingly Washingtonian and familiar) angles on issues. - Mark Jaquith from twhirl
Hafer, two words. Charles Keating. McCain's association cost us, the taxpayers in the US, $124.6 billion. Does this matter? - jcunwired
@Scoble: Yup, sure did. @Hafner: ACORN is required by law to submit all registrations. They flag those that they believe are fraudulent. They then go and fire those canvassers and help prosecute them since they have actually gotten paid for bogus work. Read up. - AJ Kohn
Indeed. ACORN is required by law to submit the false applications. They have to group them separately (which they did) and submit them to election officials from the state. Mickey Mouse will not cast a ballot. This is all just silly fake outrage from people trying to suppress the new voters registering to vote for Obama. - Rolf Schewe
I love it. Mention Keating, they clam up immediately on all the Ayers sound bites. - jcunwired
I have had this same thought. Talk about being a community organizer! Obama is a healer and an inspiration. It takes incredible skill to run a campaign like he has. - Sarah
Yup, Ayers just opens up a huge can of worms for the Republicans. - Alex Scoble
@Joe - and Obama's chief financial advisor was CEO of Fannie Mae, how much is that going to cost us? When someone doesn't have a voting record to speak of, what are you suppose to base an opinion on, campaign speeches? - Robert Hafer
Robert, you may have missed it, but John Worthington asked you a question below, which I'll requote: "how about some reasons TO elect McCain (and not just cause he isn't Obama)? " I confess I am interested in your answer. - John Craft
Top McCain fundraiser accused of ‘war profiteering.’ -- http://oversight.house.gov/story... as reported by Think Progress. The company is run by Florida businessman Harry Sargeant, who has raised at least $500,000 for Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). - Glenn Batuyong
@John I did miss that, and I'm that I'm no McCain fan. It's just that his fiscal policy is less ruinous than Obama's. And I believe (but can't be sure) that McCain is more likely to support Democracy around the world. I get perturbed that the news media is so in the tank for Obama that they help to spread his spin. - Robert Hafer
Obama didn't run the campaign, his campaign manager and the Democratic party ran the campaign. If Obama were running it, I'd say that he sucks. With Bush's 8 years of fumbling, the Dems should have an 80% lead right now. - Douglas Karr from twhirl
@Joe Snopes.com? why don't you just quote the Daily Koz? - Robert Hafer
Thanks, Robert. - John Craft
@Robert Hafer: "No, claims made in a chain e-mail are false." (duh like most chain e-mails) http://www.factcheck.org/askfact... - Glenn Batuyong
I'll plead ignorance. When did Snopes.com become a tainted source? - Christopher Galtenberg
LOL@Hafer. “In life you need either inspiration or desperation.” You clearly have chosen the latter. - jcunwired
"Reality has a well known Liberal bias." - Bill O'Reilly, 4 November 2007 - John Craft
@Robert Hafer: '...the news media is so in the tank for Obama that they help to spread his spin'? Whaaaaa? All of the 'spin' that you introduced earlier in this thread - all of which is being spread ad nauseum by Fox 'News' - has been soundly proven false via non-partisan sources...so please help me out and identify the 'spin' that the media is spreading that is helping Obama??? - Steve just Steve

Chris, unfortunately, by not voting for Obama or McCain, it is LIKE you're not voting at all even if you do vote. - Her Lindsay-ness
Because a vote for anyone other than Obama or McCain is a vote for no one. This isn't a 3 party system. This is a binary system. You can either vote for A or B. A vote for neither is a vote for the winner. Lucky for all of us Obama doesn't need your vote to take Washington. And voting for Ron Paul won't get you anything but an excess of smug. - Alex Scoble

Idiots they may be, but they're the only choices we've got if we want our votes to matter at all. And I would rather have the lesser of two idiots in office so I will cast my lot on Nov. 4th for the one I prefer. - Her Lindsay-ness
Call Obama what you will, but "idiot" is weak. - jcunwired
You're right in that they both suck. I'm getting a write-in ballot so that I can vote "present." Legitimizing either, even in the slightest way, would require my abandoning too many important principles. This is all about stewardship... what I leave for my kid... what my generation keeps and improves for the next. When the parties nominated these two, it was nothing but FAIL. - Bob Finch
Because, as a regular third-party voter myself, the third party choices this year range from horrible to the usual gang of idiots to even nuttier than usual. - Rob H.
Neither is an idiot. Both are tools. I'll throw away my vote to a third party and sleep well for the next four years. - Mark Jaquith from twhirl
having to choose a lesser of 2 evils is no choice at all! If neither of the candidates are what you want, why do you have to vote for one of them anyway to spite the other? surely you would vote for who you want. Breaking: US miltary plane forced to land in Iran after breaking air space. Just heard on France24 hour news. October surprise? Hostages?!?
Ok found it, dang had to hunt for this one. Nothing said about hostages though. - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
If this is true, the conspiracy theorist in me (until recently, a very small part) wonders if it could be an "orchestrated crisis" to take our minds off the economy (where the democrats currently hold the high ground) and onto national security (where the republicans *think* they have an upper-hand. Most of me believes that that wouldn't happen, but, sad to say, part of me believes, after the last 8 years and the last couple of days, it could. - Robert Clockedile from twhirl
BBC report says the passegers, which included "high fanking generals" were interogated and released. Also, no confimation from anyone other thant the Iranian-run news agency? Dubious. Even though I do better under Obama's plan, I still like it less. It's wealth redistribution. He wants to increase the taxes on the rich (who already pay way more than they should) in order to reduce taxes on the people who pay relatively less. McCain's plan makes the income tax less progressive, i.e. more fair. And then there's the issue of spending. Deficit spending = inflation = a tax on all of us big enough to wipe out any reductions here. - Mark Jaquith

@CandaceHolly: how can you POSSIBLY say Twitter hasn't hit the mainstream yet? Please do tell me that. I've seen it on 3 cable networks.
I haven't seen Twitter *anywhere* save two news articles. Other than that..on the internet. Every single person I work with I try to convince to use Twitter. They never heard of it. My family? Same thing. Friends that aren't of the geeky persuasion? Same thing. Twitter hasn't quite picked up yet. - Candace
and CSI !! :) - Markingegno - Donato
I've been terribly critical of Twitter. But I think it's breaking through to the mainstream -- and maturing as a platform. - Chris Baskind
come on scoble. mainstream means USERS not press. twitter is far from that... yet. I don't see mass media's use of it any different than myspace and facebook before it. Media attention does not mean success. Go anywhere outside of the Valley and nobody knows what Twitter is. That's not mainstream. - Patricia
I watched what's his name on CNN trying to explain Twitter just this morning. - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Patricia: you and Candace really need to turn on CNN and watch for an hour. They have been talking about Twitter all day long. Also, I've seen it now discussed in hundreds of newspapers, magazines, and on more than three cable networks now. How much more does it need to "go mainstream?" - Robert Scoble
Mainstream among the tech crowd. Ask your friend who's a teacher or dentist or attorney what Twitter is and wait for the blank stare. - Brett Nordquist
it needs multiple millions of domestic users. until then, it represents under ONE percent of US internet users. not mainstream. - Jeremy Toeman
was it on the VMAs? - Eric Rice
Eric: I don't know, I don't watch those. :-) - Robert Scoble
Robert, I work in entertainment, media and tech. I say, "are you on twitter?" majority say no. i love twitter, great example of the future of device agnostic communications and also how social networks will be communications/utility platforms in the future (or can be) BUT if 95% of the people i encounter have no idea what it is, it is not mainstream. It is nothing to get on the media -... more... - Patricia
I heard twitter mentioned on Foxnews, I was so excited. - Colide81 (James)
But ask most people what Windows Vista is and you'll also get a blank stare.. and thats definitly supposed to be mainstream by now! or ask facebook users what chat is and half of them would probably say they didnt know you could do that.. and its at the bottom of the page lol! - Thethirdeye.org
by the way, its okay to like twitter and root for it and it *not* be mainstream... mainstream doesn't mean "better". - Jeremy Toeman
Mainstream compared to e-mail? Facebook? MySpace? AIM? Text messaging in general? I don't think Twitter is anywhere near 1% of the U.S. population. Based on leaked numbers, I'd put them closer to 1/10 of a percent. - Mark Jaquith from twhirl
My father told me about twitter when I was at my family reunion this past summer. If HE knows about it, it's most definitely mainstream. - Prolific Programmer

You are both right in a way, twitter has reached the main stream media, but has only started to penetrate main street america, none of my family or nontech friend use it. - Kim Landwehr
None, not one, zero of my non 'tech' friends has heard of (or mentioned to me at any rate), let alone uses Twitter. Of my real-world friends in technology, only two use it and neither of those is active. Facebook is where it is at for better or (more likely), worse. Obama Can't Win Against Palin - WSJ.com
"In Mrs. Palin, Mr. Obama faces a political phenomenon who has altered the election's dynamics. Americans have rarely seen someone who immediately connects with large numbers of voters at such a visceral level. Mrs. Palin may be the first vice presidential candidate since Lyndon B. Johnson to change an election's outcome. If Mr. Obama keeps attacking her, the odds of Gov. Palin becoming Vice President Palin increase significantly." - Russellreno from Bookmarklet

Holy crap. Karl Rove can make up his own reality and spread it via WSJ. Squillions of businessfolks are going to read this and remember it and tell their friends. I'm glad WSJ puts in the sidebar and footnote that reveal Rove's political leanings. - Daniel J. Pritchett
But he's right. Palin cannot become the subject of this election. The subject is that GOP junta has run the country like a banana republic for eight years, and now says the next four would be different if we return them to the White House. - Chris Baskind

I'm not going to honor Karl Rove by responding line by line to his drivel. Either party can write articles like that, they never give a full picture. Maybe it just comes down to values for me, ie., I don't share hers, although perhaps the Undecideds do. - Marko Bon

yep, Palin is the 'red meat' for Dems. Palin is cast as the 'victim' that the left-wing media abuses, that the liberals denegrate, and the democrats don't understand. great story for running a campaign. and the Dems have a hard time keeping away from it. like others said, Palin is not the election issue. the GOP/McCain is. any press on Palin is press *not* covering GOP/McCain. Dems need to figure out how to make her a non-issue. - MikeAmundsen

"I hate him, therefore he's wrong" is a logical fallacy. Democrats ignore Karl Rove at their peril; he is an absolute political genius. A stinking, slimy weasel, but a political genius nonetheless. - Glen Campbell
it's true, if this becomes about Palin, we Dems are screwed. But Obama and Biden *have* been talking about issues. The Repubs can't win on issues, so they take random quotes out of context and try to refocus it on Palin. Look at what they did with "lipstick on a pig." The media is complicit in this. - Victor Ganata
I think Rove makes some good points here. The question is, why is he giving free advice to the enemy? My thought: he's trying to reverse psychologize the Obama ticket into taking on Palin. It's win-win for him; if they take his advice, he can claim victory, if they don't McCain might win. - John from twhirl
@AlexScoble, is it a fact? I credit much of the economic boom of the '90s to Reagan's economic policies. Reagan let the rich keep their money and, no, it didn't do much for everyone else at the time. However, there were no good investment opportunities in the '80s, so the rich horded their cash. Then, when the WWW (and other technology-related industries) took off in the '90s, the rich invested and everyone else benefited. - J. McConnell
Good thing that Obama and Biden are totally doing the grassroots thing. The media generally fails to provide substantive coverage of what they're doing, and what they're doing is really resonating with a lot of people. Anecdotally, everyone I know is voting for Obama, and i'm in freakin' San Diego, certainly one of the most conservative cities in the country. People really aren't as stupid as the Republicans and the media want you to believe. When you're getting screwed hard enough, you pay attention. - Victor Ganata
The thing I find most interesting is that Karl Rove once helped determine policy from the inside the Bush Administration. Now Mr. Rove works in media now. He gets to help to form and shape public opinion now. The WSJ and Fox News are his platforms for doing so. Am I the only one that finds scary? He has managed to cover all of the bases for promoting his school of thought. - Darrell Bell from twhirl
They've got Palin doing all the PR gigs, have hardly seen McCain in the past week. The Democrats need to (and I want them to) play smart. - Chris Dahl
Yeah, those reps aren't as stupid as we thought, eh? Of course it was the only viable opportunity and seems to be working. so far. - Alex von Halem from twhirl

I agree with Alex on trickle down economics. The gap between rich and poor is wider than ever, in part because of this practice. And at it base you need to think about it this way. If you were to give WalMart a tax-break, would they increase employee wages? - AJ Kohn
Alex, have you ever considered that the rich may be rich because they are smarter and make good decisions? Stupid broke people, if given a lot of money, will soon be broke again. "Life is hard. It's harder when you're stupid" - John Wayne - Mattb4rd
But...um...he's NOT running against Palin. Are the mass electorate really that stupid? - Steve just Steve
LOL that's laughable Matt...there are plenty of stupid people with money. You don't necessarily need intelligence to make money. To think that you do is laughable, just as it's laughable to assume that you need intelligence to get a degree. If our problem with poverty was as easy as that it would have been fixed long ago. - Alex Scoble
The hype usually wears off 30 days after the convention. - Bob Gannon
@AJ Kohn, I'm not disagreeing that trickle down economics might not work, I'm wondering aloud if it should be considered a "fact" that it doesn't work. In your example, I don't think it's fair to ask if Walmart would increase employee wages if given a task break. The fair question is, given a tax break, would Walmart invest that money in a way that benefits the many more than if the government had taken it in taxes? - J. McConnell
Alex: Laugh this off too, if you will: Socialism has failed every time is has been tried. - Mattb4rd
What I'm looking for isn't socialism. - Alex Scoble

I dunno, Europe seems to be doing OK, doesn't it? I mean, they're currency is certainly stronger than ours is right now. - Victor Ganata
I think Rove may be wrong on two points here. First, Obama hasn't been devoting significant time on attacks on Palin. Second, the contention that Palin is popular may not be true. Her negative poll numbers are higher than her positives. Her appeal may prove to be narrow and short-lived. - Mark Logan

Rove: Obama Can't Win Against Palin - http://online.wsj.com/article...
"" Mr. Obama responded by comparing Wasilla's 50 city workers with his campaign's 2,500 employees and dismissed its budget of about $12 million a year by saying "we have a budget of about three times that just for the month." He claimed his campaign "made clear" his "ability to manage large systems and to execute.""" Love it... running for president now constitutes the necessary experience to be president. Fuck, any janitor could be president by that logic. - Mark Jaquith
