Testing out a Twitter retweet using Favorites. First, import your Twitter Favorites into FriendFeed as an RSS/blog feed, using a URL like http://twitter.com/favorit.... Next, tell FriendFeed to post your imported entries to Twitter via http://friendfeed.com/setting.... That's it.
Once done, in Twitter all you have to do is Favorite something (the star that no one uses). This will get posted in your Favorites RSS feed which will be imported into FriendFeed. Then, FriendFeed will post this to Twitter and will look something like: lancearmstrong: @taylorphinner breaks the US record in the "kilo" going 1:01. As he says, "slayed it".
- Mike Reynolds
Hootsuite will allow you to import RSS in a similar manner and will poll X number of updates per hour (where you can specify the number X) in addition to allowing you to pre-pend additional notational text in front of the tweet (so you can add "RT" for example)
- Chris Aldrich
I recently started to play with my favourite Twitter feed using Yahoo Pipes with the intention of feeding it back to my Twitter account. I used Pipes to add the suffix '#fav', but didn't take it any further.
- Chris Marshall
Still having a little problem with this. How do I create the RSS feed itself?
- Mike Shields
just an FYI @Pat Hawks: you can't use twitterfeed to post back to twitter from your twitter favorites feed.. "Twitter does not allow posting of twitter feeds back to twitter..." is the error message provided by twitterfeed - its too bad because twitterfeed gives you the option to prepend RT: if you could get it to work.. I suppose you could pipe the feed then use twitterfeed to circumvent the restriction
- Bill Rawlinson
kool. i am gonna set this up for myself. thanks!
- (jeff)isageek
I set this up but the retweet didn't happen the way I wanted it so I created a pipe at yahoo pipes to help http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes... put your username in the field, hit "run pipe" then click the "get as rss" link and use the address it takes you to as a service here.. then reshare that service to twitter.. It will prepend the retweeted item with RT: @ so that the original author is cited as normal and the RT: label is present.
- Bill Rawlinson
Not seeing how to reshare to Twitter automatically... :(
- Mike Shields
Easter stories at the Gray household: "The Easter Bunny hops through the neighborhood, giving brightly colored eggs to the GOOD kids. But once upon a time, two BAD kids borrowed Daddy's computer, deleted all his bookmarks and accounts, and set up their own accounts at Radio Disney and Baskin Robbins. This made the Easter Bunny VERY angry..." :)

It's a theme that displays the current weather. I've never seen the snow version before. I don't think it's snowing outside but it would be awesome if it started.
- Kevin Fox
DO ANYBODY NO why I can't find that theme?
- Derrick
it's sugar boogers! woo hoo! call Tiger and have him bring some hookers over! *sings 'the cuervo gold. the fine columbian. makes tonight a wonderful thing...*
- Morgan
Rochelle - you and I seem to be on the same wavelength. Care to cyber dance? :-)
- Morgan
That theme has been wrong about the weather a lot recently.

Pixels lose their pigmentation when they die, and they tend to accumulate at abrupt color transitions. Obviously, you need a new screen.
- DGentry
I was thinking the same thing. Count how many times you said "Cool" Robert ;)
- Andru Edwards
This acquisition is most likely going to suck for users, but congrats to the FF team. Once Google announced Wave, selling to Facebook was probably the only remaining exit strategy worth the money.
- Chip Ramsey
I don't know if i'm excited by the possiblities of this move, or frightened by what this could mean.
- John Czwartacki
I hope they don't spoil it for us. I just want to keep coming to Friendfeed.com
- Mark
If they had no plans of shutting down FriendFeed and rolling features into Facebook they would have said so right away to avoid speculation and to reassure FF users. I am trying not to be suspicious, but I am.
- Inside Alaska
Andru: it was about 100 degrees outside where I was doing the interview. I was trying to think cool and keep my cool. Heheh.
- Robert Scoble
Maybe now we'll be able to integrate Facebook feed with FF & twitter
- Justin Long
Faceborg...Googlebook...time to move back to StumbleUpon? Guess we should have seen this coming when FriendFeed got integrated into FeedBurner.
- Gail Gardner
This interview is pretty funny... the person interviewing sounds like he just wants to ask questions for the sake of asking questions...;-) ... thanks for the insightful interview but..
- Sherif Mansour
In the interview, it was said that FriendFeed was not in immediate danger and could have continued for a number of years on their own. I'm not quite sure if that is true, because FriendFeed didn't develop their own business model.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
About integrating the social graphs, my social networks on FF and FB had different purposes. I don't have any friends on FB whom I haven't personally met, whereas I subscribe to some people I don't know on FF just because their feeds are interesting. On a related note, the FB graph is undirected and the FF graph is directed.

"tremendous opportunity" is so vague. Opportunity for who? What opportunity exactly? Or is it just the opportunity to allow the friendfeed employees who weren't already rich to get rich?
- Laura Norvig
Laura: it's every engineer's dream to change the world of 300 million people instead of a few hundred thousand people. That's why this is a tremendous opportunity.
- Robert Scoble
Sigh. I guess. It's just very hard to think of Facebook as a life-changing venue.
- Laura Norvig
Robert: Thanks for this - some information at last!
- Jim Connolly
Instead of just having a new post show up as a title and a link when the system gets around to checking your feed, you could push an excerpt and an image to FriendFeed the instant the post goes up.
- Ken Sheppardson
There is a WordPress plugin to support SUP, which would accomplish the "instant" part of your goal: http://wordpress.org/extend.... To get images you just need to support MediaRSS (I believe there is also a WordPress plugin for that).
- Benjamin Golub
Benjamin: I knew somebody'd mention SUP :-) I'd rather not add some intermediate service/protocol, I just want the ability push directly via a single plug-in, preferably with a UI component that gives you control over what image or images are added, select the excerpt, select what groups the post goes to, etc.
- Ken Sheppardson
What I want is probably similar to what Ken you want - something to push the title & link& image as a post, and an excerpt as a comment to FriendFeed, which would then go to Twitter. The group selecter would be ultra cool on top of that
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Yeah, I'm using PUB-Sup, but what would be even more interesting is something that pushes, and tracks comments of the pushed post at the same time. I'd like to have real-time comments on each blog post.
- Jesse Stay
Just sent him a tweet. Hopefully he'l join us :) Looks to be in india
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
OK, I get it, guys. I know how SUP works and I know you can use SUP and MediaRSS to accomplish what I want. But I don't want to ping some API to tell it to go pull something from a feed... I want to make a single call to the FriendFeed API designed for creating entries http://code.google.com/p...
- Ken Sheppardson
Shouldn't be that hard to build. You can do it Ken :)
- Bwana ☠
Bwana: I think Sudar has already. :-) I'm going to put his implementation through its paces over the weekend.
- Ken Sheppardson
Oh ok cool... Hmmm.. I'd try it, but I'm not sure how it'll affect Backtype Connect on my blog. I want to be sure the FF comments get pulled in correctly.
- Bwana ☠
Bwana: not sure exactly what you want to try - but in general any entry that links to your posts will be connected by BT Connect -- we do of course try our best to cut out things like auto snippets of text that appear as comments when using the FF bookmarklet.
- Mike Montano
Mike - I just wanted to be sure if I remove my RSS feed from FriendFeed and use this solution, will my comments get pulled back into my blog. I gather the plugin would have to only link to my blog from FriendFeed, and Backtype does the rest
- Bwana ☠
Yeah, it seems like once the plugin creates the entry on FriendFeed with a link to your blog post, you're home free, no matter how that entry is created.
- Ken Sheppardson
Hi Guys, nice to know that the Plugin (Post2FF) which I created around 9 months back is of use to someone :) I am take the code dust it off and will add the new features that you requested. Stay tuned :)
- Sudar
Of note, Sudar: it would be most handy if we could select the link that is published on the entry - either the linkt ot the blog entry or the ff.im link. (wasn't clear to me if the API actually supports this?) On most of my blog posts, I'd like to direct people straight to the post, but someone or some entries might prefer linking to the FriendFeed post/discussion
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
I am done with the modifications to my Plugin to add new features like choosing the room to which the link to be posted, selecting images etc. Will release it after completing the testing. If anyone is willing to do beta testing, just ping me.
- Sudar
@Ken, Please DM your email address and I will send the Plugin for beta testing. If everything goes well, I will be able to release the Plugin tomorrow by this time.
- Sudar
So guys, finally I have updated my Post to FriendFeed Plugin with support for rooms. You can get the new version at http://sudarmuthu.com/blog...
- Sudar
I'm not sure to have understood the question: I saw that Feedburner now works in realtime, so you just have to use that instead of the standard feed
- Roberto
from fftogo
I wanted to understand If I can autopost from friendfeed to Wordpress. I am using the rss feed in the sidebar, instead I want the stuff to be added to wordpress as a post.
- Chirag Chamoli
from email
@Chirag, You can install WP-O-Mattic WordPress Plugin (http://devthought.com/project...) and use the FF rss as input to publish from FF -> WordPress. (I haven't tried it, so not sure if it will work 100%)
- Sudar
@Sundar: Thanks I will start working on that.
- Chirag Chamoli
I am interested in using Sundar's plugin. Is it compatible with WordPress 2.8.3?
- Skyler Call
@Skyler Call, It should be compatible, since it doesn't use any functions which were changed in 2.8+ Anyways I will check it and will bump up the supported version in readme file.
- Sudar
Is there any working plugin for wp 3.4.x version?
- mak
Child number 3 and my oldest daughter Holly.
- Thomas Hawk
great pic. question for you. Do your kids like taking pictures? Mine do but they have no interest in processing the photos. When I say processing I mean they don't even care to see them on the computer. They seem satisfied just looking at them on the camera LCD.
- gfurry
gfurry, make prints, the kids (and you) will enjoy them much more
- michele
cool! my both kids (4y girl and 2.5y boy) trying to shoot too! great picture...
- ilya
my kids like shooting. Jack my oldest son, who's 8, also likes processing. I've been pretty impressed with some of the work that he's done. None of the other 3 have done any processing yet. They love seeing them on the LCD though. Even my youngest, 4 year old Katie loves to shoot.
- Thomas Hawk
Always a proud moment when the little one picks up the tools, nice shot.
- Jason Remnant
This is such a beautiful study of reflections and perspectives: your daughter taking a picture (or pretending to) of something, the glass reflection of her taking a picture, and then you, taking a photo of her taking a picture. This picture is just so lovely, and perhaps a hint of things to come...
- Carla Lynne Hall
What a lovely picture! I learn about good of monochrome from this.
- Kazuya Yokoyama
Jesse, that'd be a good option, but I don't want to have to leave the board of advisors to SocialToo. I recognize the potential for conflicts of interest.
- Louis Gray
How I wish I could be there, but I think the beer may be warm and flat by the time I travel from England. Thanks anyway @Scobleizer :)
- Chris Marshall
it's not annoying at all, especially if you use a filter for what you receive via IM. Adium rocks.
- Karoli
farzaam, but Trillian doesn't exist for the Mac and Adium doesn't exist for the PC.
- Akiva
I nearly always have Adium running and wished that the Twitter IM service would return so this is great news. I like the fact that Adium give you access to your Facebook chat too.
- Chris Marshall
Very cool! Air apps just don't do it for me and I'm not a fan of the current crop of cocoa clients. Already have Adium open all day, so this sounds great!
- Derek Gathright
Palringo is a true cross platform IM service: it works on both Mac and PC PLUS most major MOBILE platforms (windows mobile, symbian, java, iphone, blackberry, Android (coming). You can move from computer to mobile and back and all of your contacts/chat sessions will be synchronised. it connects to all of the IM services PLUS Facebook chat. so check it out as an alternative to both Adium and Trillian. And Twitter integration is coming....
- kerry ritz
I would use adium if only it didn't crash all the time.
- Richard A.
I'll stick with Adium as it evolves and gets even better. It has not crashed on me even once since I got my Mac last August. I'm running the latest versions of Leopard and Adium, and have not enabled the Adium option to "download the latest beta version when available". On my Adium wishlist: better file transfers and audio chat.
- Siddharth Deb
Then you're lucky. Gave up on it two or three years ago.
- Richard A.
Wow, in all the years I've used Adium, since about 2001 or so, it has never crashed on me. In fact, I've never heard anyone complain of crashes until now.
- Akiva
Does the video chat work on Adium? I have trouble at times. I use meebo web based and it works quite nice. They are coming out with an iphone app (and other mobile platform apps) as well. I need to test video chat w/meebo though.

Earlier this morning Flickr and Getty Images announced the launch of their new joint stock photography offering called “The Flickr Collection.” “We are thrilled to provide our customers with this ground-breaking collection,” said Jonathan Klein, co-founder and chief executive officer of Getty Images. “We are impressed with the talent from the Flickr community, and are proud to once again lead our industry in this exciting new direction. We are eager to hear what our customers think, and look forward to their input in shaping this ever-expanding collection.” I haven’t had a good chance yet to try out the new service but thought I’d offer some of my thoughts on the service here. I just received an invitation from Getty Images to participate in the collection on 95 of my photos, but only yesterday, so I haven’t had a chance yet to either decide what to do or sign up for the service.
- Thomas Hawk
I just replied to you on Twitter re: this. Sounds like an interesting collaborative idea and I like the idea of extending the value of existing on-line content. I think the service has different implications to someone like yourself that participates in professional photography than me, as a happy snapper. But I like the theory. Will investigate further.
- Ed Richardson
Thomas, I'm not at all surprised to hear that you have been invited to participate. Congrats and well deserved.
- Mike Doeff
Congratulations for being asked to participate!
- Sandra
The more I learn about this partnership the more dumb I think it is. It completely misses the point and the value of a community site like Flickr. This is basically just Getty going through and hand picking photographers, which they could have done anyway and gives no real value added to either Flickr members or potential buyers.
- Eric P
I tend to agree with EricP. This simply seems like a publicity stunt for Getty. They are getting a lot of press because they are 'teaming' with Flickr. If they had simply found and contacted individual photographers they liked on Flickr, there would have been little to no buzz. The net result for the photographer and photo buyer is the same either way. The Flickr community is not being embraced by Getty, they are just being used.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Congrats Thomas! Have to agree with Eric & Jeff though. Being a designer, I've bought from Getty over the years, when it was first announced I thought it was nothing more than a publicity stunt, they didn't need to partner. Partnering buys them nothing except publicity as far as I can tell.
- PXLated
I read that now when u join Flickr, u r automatically joined to Getty collection, unless u go turn the option off, which u can, so Flickr-ers read between the lines.
- polou/indigo_bow
Getty bought a marketing channel from Flickr. that's all this is really. look for Flickr to ramp up marketing for services and products targeted at pro members in the future.
- hobvias sudoneighm
I suppose it was only a matter of time before Flickr joined forces with a stock photo company. I imagine that this news will bring surge of new Flickr memebers.
- Chris Marshall
from twhirl
I still prefer Twist - but I think it would be cool to compare the Facebook/Google trend data against the Twitter data- that would be an interesting mashup and trend comparison. It would be a more wholistic approach to trending data.
- Mary McKnight
from a UI point of View Twist wins it. But Twist does not win on granulatity of data
- Ouriel Ohayon
@Aaron: it reminds me of a chat room. a/s/l anyone?
- Mona Nomura
"Ridiculously featureless." Well put. Not to mention it's really really slow. It's a good thing they have XMPP connectivity out of the box, since that's the only way it's remotely usable.
- Albert Willis
its more like we flock to these other services to lay claim to our handles, or else you are like scoble and they get scooped up.
- Andrea Baker
Gee. It was working fine a minute ago. ;-)
- Leo Laporte
Had a look at identi.ca, but think friendfeed will be my new drug of choice
- James Fridley
I kind of hate it already, and I just joined tonight. I'm sticking with Twitter/FF
- Veronica
Anybody remember what Twitter looked like on it's first day live?
- Ken Sheppardson
MASS MIGRATION!! I see over 1,000 unique users already in 1 day! dang this app is going viral fast!... already got an outage error... we need a "fail MOOSE"
- Susan Beebe
I can't call them "tweets", and calling them "identi" is just weird
- xero
Seriously, they're already moving servers apparently according to the head guy there once it finally calmed down.
- Zach Flauaus
@Mona people complain but only for so long... remember - everybody left DOS years ago...
- Harry Myhre
Zach: who's the "head guy" @ identi.ca ??
- Susan Beebe
i'm willing to test out any of these microblogging platforms to find one that consistently works
- Chris
startups that experience exponential growth get slammed with new users... thus the performance hits on their servers = crawl
- Susan Beebe
Not sure if he's the "head guy" but Evan Prodromou (evan here and on identi.ca) is certainly up the chain. I've seen him described as the author in other threads.
- Ken Sheppardson
I'll stick with Twitter and Friend Feed for now. I've been to a few different places and it just doesn't feel right. Yeah, Twitter is down a lot, but I still like it. I also am liking FF too, because people can leave comments.
- Molly Song ;)
FriendFeed is MY killer app.. the rest are time sucks
- Susan Beebe
I signed in with openid (liked that), uploaded an avatar and made a post. But I don't know if I want to put any effort into subscribing to anyone. I mean the people I want to follow (subscribe to) are mostly hear or on FF. Maybe I am just being lazy.
- Andrea Baker
The twitter clones all seem to have at least one defining thing going for them, but identi.ca is very plain. It seems like twitter with *less* features.
- Patrick
from twhirl
Apart from communities on twitter-clones tending to be much smaller than on twitter itself, if you make a straight up clone, you will probably end up with the same technical problems Twitter has. You'd have to change something quite radical on the architecture side of things.
- Horst Gutmann
Ugh, I hope people don't start using it. Now that I've finally left Twitter, I'm pretty content with FriendFeed.
- Dillon K. Hoops
@Igor You have that backwards. ;) Personally I'm liking FriendFeed. It's like an open architecture FaceBook. The only things I'd change is a better mobile interface, the ability to SMS/IM in shares, and the ability to comment on/like comments. That's it. The feature I love the most is the Imaginary Friend feature.
