The surface area is probably fairly close to the house my parents owned when they were my age, but their house had a basement, so there was more space. However, a few years after they were my age, they moved into a much larger house than we have now; and I can tell you with an almost absolute certainty that we will not be moving any time soon.
- DAMMIT, MR. NOODLE
Bigger. By my age, they'd moved to a better part of town and a smaller house. And this, probably our final house, is the largest we've ever owned.
- Walt Crawford
I live in a first-floor apartment of a two-family home... I don't know about my dad's apartment, but from what I've heard of my mom's apartment at my age, mine is bigger. She lived alone in a one bedroom & I'm sharing a three bedroom space with a full kitchen, living room, and dining area.
- Lola Bean (Penguin)
When my mom was 45 she lived in a 1bdr house that was bigger than the 2 bdr flat I live in now. When my dad was 45, he was driving cross country & mostly living in his truck's "condo".
- Starmama

Somewhat smaller, but I'm also not married with a child.
- Jennifer Dittrich
My apt in Beijing was smaller, but to be fair it was a really nice apartment. For Beijing.
- Jessie
About 3/4 the size of my parents' home.
- Running Slow
The house is the same size, but her garage was much bigger and the yard much smaller. My dad's apt. was about the same size, but his rent was like $300.

The related question is do you live in the same type of area as you grew up? (Suburban/urban/rural/etc.)
- kendrak
Probably more than twice the size, and much more land. Several factors, but this area is less densely populated than where I grew up.
- Tinfoil 2.0
Less than half the size or more than twice the size, depending on which parent we are talking about. One owned an 8 room house with a finished basement, a garage, and big backyard... and the other lived in a mobile home, in which the largest room in it was about the size of my bathroom, and the bathroom in it was about the size of my daughter's closet.
- April Russo
We are currently living in a more rural area than my parents were when they were my age, but less rural than the area where they moved when they were a little older than I am now. They were in a suburban area when they were my age (I was about 4 years old at that point), but moved to a rural area with 10 acres of land when I was about 6. We live on about 1.5 acres now in a mostly rural area, but there aren't as many farms around us as there were when I was growing up.
- DAMMIT, MR. NOODLE
Smaller. Our current living space is approximately 900 sqft. Folks had a ~2400 sqft house.
- SAM
Much bigger, but the house I live in is owned by the church I serve.
- Friar Ticket to Ride
Smaller, and with way smaller front and back yards.
- Betsy #TeamMonique
Smaller. Hell, its smaller than my bedroom in my parents' place when they were the age I am now. And it wasn't a big room either :-)

hard liquor in the grocery store? *clutches pearls*
- Hieronymous Boosh
hahahaha, yeah that was a O_O for her when I first took her shopping the first time she came to visit. It's all sold in markets here :).
- Scott. Cat Herder.
Yeah, it blew my mind at first. Coming from NYC where you have can get beer at the supermarket, but have to go to a liquor store and then going to Philly where you have to get beer at a distributor and go to a state store for liquor and the same in NC....altho you can get beer at the supermarket. The liquor & wine thing blew my mind.
- Mary Carmen

- Hieronymous Boosh
Pfft. Not only can you buy booze at most California grocery stores, Safeway has one of the best wine selections around (at least Bay Area Safeways do). At sometimes absurdly good prices also.
- Walt Crawford
Liquor is sold in the grocery stores here too. Remarkable for such a redneck state.

I'm gonna post this to hopefully stop being upset: my roommate is getting married at the courthouse today and I can't go b/c they "don't really want anyone there." Except his friend that's officiating, and his friend that's taking photos, and his daughter. But not me. I'm just altering the blouse she wants to wear for it by 2pm. I'm near tears.
I totally respect whatever they want to do, really. It just makes me sad that she didn't think "I want T to be there." But oh well.
- t-ra: not givin up
That seriously sucks. Sounds like she's a little spoiled. Except that I notice all the people are his people, not hers. His friend officiating, his friend shooting, his daughter. Where is she in that relationship?
- Mary B: #TeamMonique
*hug* I say this in the hope it will make you less sad: Some folks just want it to be as private as possible, and I am certain it is not intended as a slight. Jed and I asked a stranger to officiate and a stranger to take pictures, simply because those were things that needed doing, but it was *our* moment (Im sure we would have brought kids if we'd had any) and we wanted it to be a moment just for us, with a more inclusive celebration later to include our loved ones.
- ωαřмaiden ❤Marrit Woman❤
thanks, warmaiden. I do totally get that it's their thing and they should do it how they choose. I know my emotional shit is mine and not hers... just a selfish reaction of feeling left out when it's not about me, nor should it be. I'll have a good cry, then get my head back on straight. I know it means a lot to her that I'm doing this blouse and that's cool. They're leaving town tonight and I'm taking care of the animals while they're gone, so I'll go over there tonight and hopefully get a photo with her.
- t-ra: not givin up
It is totally understandable to be sad, and it's a shame they didnt just keep it to themselves so you wouldn't be hurt, that seems thoughtless of her to ask you to work on something for it and not invite you. Happy for your moment of grace, but sending you lifted-up thoughts and hugs.
- ωαřмaiden ❤Marrit Woman❤
Wow. that's bad. I'm sorry, boo. You are awesome though, and their loss for not having you and your wonderful spirit there.
- Monique the crochet freak
That's hard. We didn't want anyone there, except for Wade, so we only told one friend, because we used her back porch and needed her witness signature. She was not one of my best friends, just someone I could trust to keep it quiet. It must be hard to keep something like that from your roommate, so I see both sides. I bet she loves you, T.
- Laura Norvig
Thanks everyone. I just needed a safe place to be butthurt about it, and I appreciate y'all lettin me do that, as usual. Everything is solid between her and I and will continue to be. I went over to get the keys for animal sitting this weekend. Got a hug and a picture with her, so that's our moment and that works for me. They're off to the Grand Canyon for honeymoon weekend now.

No, not that I know of - it is entirely browser-based. Most of the applications built for Chrome work just fine, and I've found thin replacements for those things if I've needed them, but I'm not using it for anything work/business related.
- Jennifer Dittrich
Chrome is like putting the Chrome browser in full screen mode. If you can do your thing using only Chrome apps, then you'll be fine. Otherwise, get a real OS on a real laptop.
- Eric - seven eleven
Of course the way Adobe is going, their apps would be in the cloud right? Hrmm...
- Zulema ❧ spicy cocoa tart
I only use ChromeOS, at home and at work. For Photoshop like stuff, I use Pixlr.com. Adobe is definitely going to the cloud, and I admit I am not intimate with their cloud apps, but the writing is on the wall. Now that Spotify is in the cloud too, all I want is Fitbit syncing and Sonos support for Chrome.
- Louis Gray
As for Chrome at full screen, saying "real OS" on a "real laptop" is especially dismissive. Eric should know better.
- Louis Gray
Adobe apps are not in the cloud, and Chromebook won't run them. You only need to connect to the cli=oud once a month - maybe less - to verify your membership once you go the Creative Cloud route - which I will NOT do before the end of July, when my price would go up past $30/month, and I may stand pat with CS6.

I was totally thinking about building my next desktop, but now I'm thinking about all the times I've brought my dead Mac to the Apple Store and they've either fixed in in 30 minutes or just given me a new one free of charge. Like, they've literally given me two new computers. (Well, not literally for free. For the price of AppleCare. Still way cheaper than having to buy a new computer, though. Probably even cheaper than having to buy a new motherboard/CPU and/or GPU.)
- Victor Ganata
I can't remember a time when I've ever built myself a system to "save money." I build systems so that I can get the exact specs I want, I can upgrade easily, and I know what's going on in my system at all times. I don't give a crap about economic or business sense.
- Hookuh Tinypants
All PC vendors allow you to customize your components though (admittedly, though, often with very severe limits). Knowing my luck with off-the-shelf parts, I just might need that support. Although I think avoiding crapware is a pretty good reason not to go with a PC vendor.
- Victor Ganata
I think you'll always have people who will want that degree of customizability, because they have a very specific task, or set of tasks, that they'd like to have fine control over. I discovered that I'm not that person the last time I built a machine, but I'm also not demanding a lot of my machines.
- Jennifer Dittrich
Oh PC vendors don't tend to carry the hardware I have preferences for. :) My tastes run much richer. And faster.

The one case I can see would be building a Hack Pro. Don't see putting out 3 grand plus for a machine that hasn't been updated in several years. But in fact, I'm all talk - my next machine will be a standard-issue MBP plus a 27-inch external display, when I turn in this iMac in June. Fact is, I not only don't build machines, I don't even buy them - I'm on a long-term rental where I get a new machine every two years.

I feel ya - it's 54 here and I've put away most of my sweaters and gotten out my t-shirts for the year, but I'm keeping some heavier clothing handy. This spring sucks.
- WebGoddess
I hauled out my storage containers of spring summer clothes about 2 months ago. The idea then was to put them into my dresser drawers, and put the heavier winter clothes into the containers for storage. And then it went from the 50's, 60's and 70's back to the 10's, 20's and 30's. We've hit the 80's and brushed up against the 90's a time or two, but we're back in the 30's and 40's right now. I have enough trouble getting my drawers in order. This weather is just askin' for drawer chaos!
