A critique of the efficacy of black blocks and activist violence. Does the riot become an end in itself? Does the need for secrecy weaken intra-group relationships? Does direct action disenfranchise those who are nearby, but not involved? Do black blockers scorn the peaceful protesters that are essential to their ability to operate?

Talk from activist, Jasmina Tesanovic, on the war crimes trial of Serb soldiers who participated in the massacre in Srebrenica. The talk is a straight account of the trial, but, also, an exploration of the motivations and mindset of how the accused relate to their crimes.

"According to a comment posted by Matt Haughey on MetaFilter, this idea was actually invented by Philip Greenspun between 1998 and 2000. http://ask.metafilter.com/117775......"

"That's an interesting idea. So you could get an idea of how close your taste is to that of Epitonic, or Tiny Mix Tapes, or whatever? Mary"

"Thanks so much for the write-up of the perceptron. I absolutely love your idea about allowing users to control the relative weights of different sources. I'm totally going to look into it. maryrosecook"

""Just give us your data and we'll figure it out" is a very hip concept at the moment. It is difficult to bet against, as it is essentially a "technology will get there eventually" argument. However, it's also a dangerous temptation to focus on the creators (sharers) rather than the consumers. This breeds corporate mass media ("fuck the public") and moves away from communities that make their own content for themselves (where consideration of the audience/consumers is paramount)."

"I find it interesting that you chose to emphasise the sharing, rather than the consumption. I don't know which is the more important, but I do know that sharing is a firehose at the moment, rather than an irrigation system. So, in order to build a good system, it might be instructive to focus on the consumers, rather than the sharers."
