"Be careful with prepaid if you are used to roaming. I live in CT and when we vacation in upstate NY none of our prepaid phones roam while the contract phones seamlessly flip to whatever signal is present. This is probably a small tradeoff for most but it's worth considering for anyone living in fringe signal areas. Try out the prepaid coverage before you make a final decision."

"No mystery about what will happen here. Microsoft will find a couple products with large user bases and with large revenues (these can be separate products) then declare them part of the Office 365 division. Presto. Instant user adoption - and revenues! It's a good bet that Yammer will be one service to roll into Office 365 and Skype another. That will goose the user counts and fool most observers."

"For this to make sense you probably need to assume that unlimited data will come to a close within the next year or two - and that other cellular companies will adopt a similar model (I believe they will). If you factor in a tablet (or two) with shared data and tethering on every line the pricing starts to look a little better though I agree - this is at best maybe a savings of $10-$50/mo and it will produce the most savings for those people using little wireless data."

"Before suggesting any acquisitions I would look at what something like the Sprint / Nextel combination produced. If you recall Nextel was a rather down-on-their-luck telco at the time of the acquisition and I don't think Sprint really ever reaped the benefits that they thought they would - and it seems like it took a lot of effort to deal with the Nextel transition. A lot of effort."

"This pre-supposes that to enter the contest we still have friends using BBM. How exactly does this advertisement do anything to advance BBM use?"

"A more complete answer might also be that Mighty Text doesn't work when your phone is out of battery or turned off. That's actually a huge downside to this app vs iMessage (which does work if your phone is off)."

"Hi Russ - I sent a LinkedIN message to Brian Dunn (their CFO) and Jeff Roth (SWK) - neither replied to my inquiry. While I do not have information about how this deal is structured - and because nobody involved is talking about it - I can only provide a personal opinion that based on feedback from various sources Hightower is out of business. Our best information is that they closed on Monday 3/19/12 without much advance warning."

"Nice work. I definitely would like to see integration into LinkedIn Groups which is the area of LinkedIn that I'm most active with. I think there's also a market for some type of "reblogging" tool which would start with a link then allow the user to fashion a post right from the toolbar. The missing piece with most "blog from a link" tools is they don't handle the task of adding an image to a post very well."

"I'm not a fan of Gmail plugins. The ones I've tried consistently mis-identified people and/or were slow and buggy to load. I've tried probably a half dozen (ranging from contact plugins to task managers). I uninstalled every last one of them. One big problem seems to be around Google Apps for Domains which is like Kryptonite to both Google and Plugin Developers. Hardly anything works (reliably) for me with my GAFYD account. And I'm sure Google is just as happy to see that because they can natively include some of this functionality."

"BBM is an SMS alternative. So you're thinking carriers would be persuaded to give up $20 to $30 per month for unlimited SMS (which is what most charge a customer) in exchange for 25 cents? Yeah sounds great..."

"Unless I didn't hear correctly - Sage also claimed 8,000 total paid SaaS customers -- at revenue of about $1,000,000 -- which I think is about $125 per customer/per year. That reminds me of the playground Netsuite was in back in their early days. I believe Sage also refers to SageOne as serving the "Micro" business market. I wasn't really sure what this phrasing meant but they didn't seem overly eager to give the impression during the presentation that SageOne was going to scale up past very entry level (think kitchen counter shoebox accounting)."

"I spotted your post while on vacation and since I already own IM+ decided to give it another spin. There are a couple issues that I found: 1. The Skype integration - while unique (it's the only mainstream messaging client I'm aware of that offers Skype) also tends to disconnect quite frequently. So frequently that I would judge it unusable. This appears to be a problem admitted to by Shape Services - and which they admit is due to their own servers overloading. http://shapeservices.com/en/su... 2. The second problem that I ran into -- and I'm not sure if it's a misconfiguration on my part. Shape advertises their IM+ as having: " BlackBerry Push and IM Push Mode integrated with Blackberry Inbox "Push service will make sure that all incoming messages are safely delivered to your BlackBerry! Push is a great way to save battery and stay connected at the same time! However my testing seems to indicate this is not entirely true. What you get is a tiny icon across the top of the home screen..."

"The hidden secret here is that sync between desktop and device is slow. Like .... my grandmother was slow but she was old - slow.... The only way to go with Gmail on a BlackBerry if you want two way sync is with a BES Express. Now there's no requirement to pay your carrier more than what you are paying for BIS. I have GBESX and it's the only way to go for two way sync of your GMail , Contacts, Calendar."
