Imgur Updates GIF Format to Load Much Faster
Internet culture is dominated by GIFs — and they just got even better. See also: GIF vs. JIF: You're Probably Still Saying It Wrong Imgur announced Project "GIFV" (GIF Video) on Thursday as a part of an effort to make the files load faster and perform better. "The cornerstone of Project GIFV is a platform-wide upgrade to automatically convert uploaded GIF files on the fly into the MP4 video format," Imgur wrote in a news release. "The converted MP4s are significantly smaller than their equivalent GIFs, which allows them to load at lightning-fast speeds with better quality." Read more... Lying Down for Jobs During the Great Depression
These photos show unemployed demonstrators - men and women - drawing attention to their campaign for employment and winter relief by lying down in London's Oxford Street - bringing all traffic on the busiest London thoroughfare to a complete standstill. This was but one in a series of protests carried out by the campaigners toward the end of the Great Depression. Just before Christmas 1938, unemployed men had lain down in the snow at Oxford Circus - the central junction of London's two main shopping arteries, Oxford Street and Regent Street, and the locus of London's Christmas shoppers. These protests came at the end of a decade when mass unemployment in Britain was a constant. In 1933, 2.5 million - one quarter of the total British workforce - was out of work. Notoriously, in the Northern town of Jarrow, every single man in the town was unemployed. Read more... More about History, Great Depression, Us World, and Retronaut

"The Turkish Government Killed My Son"
Suruc, TURKEY — Islamic State militants may have pulled the trigger but Emine Beki believes it was the Turkish government that effectively killed her oldest son. Beki's 25-year-old son died earlier this week, having tried to defend his hometown of Kobane from the onslaught of ISIS militants. His injury had been minor — a bullet wound to the leg — and his fellow soldiers had tried to rush him to the nearest hospital. But with Kobane surrounded on three sides by ISIS militants, the only option had been to bring him north to Turkey. When he arrived at the border, however, Turkish authorities delayed his passage for hours as he bled out. “He was supposed to be okay,” said Beki, 45, as she waited for his body to be brought to her. “The Turkish government killed my son.” Read more...
