Google Genomics is a cloud service just for DNA data
Google is approaching hospitals and universities with a new pitch: Have genomes? Store them with us. The search giant's first product for the DNA age is Google Genomics, a cloud computing service that it launched last March but which went mostly unnoticed amid a barrage of high profile R&D announcements from Google, like one late last month about a far-fetched plan to battle cancer with nanoparticles. 9 reasons to consider a veteran for your company's next hire
This question originally appeared on Quora. What are the advantages of hiring someone who has been in the U.S. military — specifically, hiring them for a non-military job? Answer below by Jon Davis, Sergeant in the U.S.M.C. and amateur military historian. I am going to speak as a Marine and a former hiring manager. I was once a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps with two Iraq tours and have worked in retail, real estate, the tech startup and education sectors. In that time, I've hired more than enough people to know that it's one of the hardest decisions you have to regularly make When reviewing resumes, we often rely on generalizations to give us the best guess of who will add value to a company's culture. The problem with many hiring managers is that they have no idea what it means when they see a veteran's resume: The qualities to expect, the flaws they'll have, their overall value and what makes them different from other candidates. Security agents can make airports safer just by talking to passengers
A new method of screening airplane passengers for signs they may be dangerous is 20 times more successful at catching deceptive passengers than the screening method traditionally used in the United States and other countries, a new study suggests. The new method is based on asking passengers open-ended, conversational questions, whereas traditional screening methods focus on observing people's body language. In the study, which was funded in part by the British government, 204 mock airplane passengers — including acting students and undercover police detectives — were given cover stories, and asked to attempt to deceive security agents in real airport screenings in Europe. As an extra incentive, the mock passengers were given money if they successfully avoided detection by the security agents. Read more... More about Security, Airplane, Us World, Us, and World

Land animals developed sex organs along with limbs, study finds
If you turn over a mouse and a snake to look for their sex organs, you'd likely gain an appreciation for the diversity of genitalia in the animal world. Down near their tails, male mice have penises studded with tiny spines, and female mice have vaginas. But male snakes have a pair of penises, called hemipenes, closer to the middle of their body, and during sex, they insert one into the female's all-purpose opening. There's a good reason why you'd find the sex organs in different spots on a mouse and a snake, according to a new study. During early development, snake genitals actually arise from the vestigial tissue that would have given rise to their hind legs. (Snakes lost their limbs a long time ago during the course of evolution.) Meanwhile, the genital tubercle in mammals — the part that will eventually become either a penis or a clitoris — derives from the tail bud tissue. Read more... iOS 'Masque Attack' could allow hackers to replace iPhone apps with malware
Security researchers at FireEye revealed on Monday a vulnerability in iOS that could allow malware to be installed over legitimate iOS apps. The vulnerability, which FireEye is dubbing "Masque Attack," occurs using Apple's enterprise/ad-hoc provisioning system. Apple offers developers and enterprises the ability to distribute applications to users outside of the App Store. To do this, the user must install what is called a provisioning profile. At that point, the user can install an application directly from a link (or transfer it to an iOS device using iTunes). See also: 3 New Apple Security Upgrades to Protect Your Info Read more... Mesmerizing video shows Super Typhoon Nuri as it turned into Bering Sea 'bomb'
Over the weekend, the remnants of Super Typhoon Nuri turned into one of the most intense storms ever recorded in the North Pacific As the storm wrapped itself into a comma shape, taking up an area bigger than the size of the state of Alaska, the estimated minimum air pressure plunged to 924 millibars (mb) In general, the lower the air pressure, the stronger the storm. In this case, 924 mb was sufficiently low to set a record for the Bering Sea, and possibly the North Pacific as well, beating the previous record low of 925 mb, set in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, in 1977. The actual air pressure in this storm may have been lower than 924 mb, but its center stayed at sea, where it was not directly observed by any surface weather stations. Read more...
