All is not lost in ISIS’s attempt to smash the past
The archaeological and historical communities are deeply dismayed about ISIS destroying archaeological sites and materials in the last few weeks. We have seen pictures of ISIS smashing statues and artifacts in the Mosul museum. ISIS soldiers have reportedly destroyed buildings at the ancient Assyrian cities Ninevah and Nimrud in Iraq. ISIS is also believed to be selling Assyrian and other antiquities on the illegal international antiquities market. As an archaeologist, I find all of these actions reprehensible and sad. They damage the historical heritage of all of us, and of people in Syria and Iraq in particular. That is no small thing. Read more... More about Iraq, Isis, Us World, Archaelogy, and History

The UK's beaches are swamped with washed-up wet wipes
LONDON — Next time you use a wet wipe, do nature a favour and put it in the bin. The common tendency to flush wet wipes down the toilet is based in the mistaken belief that they easily disintegrate, but in reality, they are causing an influx of the wipes on Britain's beaches, according to a new report from the Marine Conservation Society (MCS). In fact, the number discovered on beaches grew by more than 50% in 2014, per the report, and averaged out at more than 35 wipes per kilometre of beach. Pretty rank. See also: Australia, This Is What Plastic Is Doing To Our Beautiful Beaches More than 5,000 volunteers combed 301 beaches in the UK between Sept. 12 and Sept. 22 last year, collecting 2,457 bits of litter per kilometre, which was an increase of 6.4% compared to 2013. Target promises $10 million for data breach victims, if they can prove it
A federal judge has approved a class-action settlement in which Target promised to pay each victim of its 2013 data breach up to $10,000 if they can prove damage But there's a catch: The company previously argued in court that consumers have no way of showing they suffered any harm. And it's not yet clear what kind of proof the retailer will require. See also: The worst and biggest data breaches of 2014 Under the terms of the settlement, approved in Minneapolis on Thursday morning, Target will establish a $10 million fund for victims and will require consumers to provide documentation that their accounts were compromised. That means most people whose data was comprised will receive far less than $10,000 each; allocating the full $10,000 per victim would only cover 2,000 people. Read more... An enormous crocodile ancestor with blade-like teeth walked on two legs and was at the very top of North America's food chain 231 million years ago, according to a new study. Named "Carolina Butcher" (Carnufex carolinensis), the newly discovered toothy beast reveals that predecessors of today's crocodiles — crocodylomorphs — were top predators in North America prior to the reign of dinosaurs.
