Hamas Unmasked: Who Are the Militants Fighting Israel? - http://mashable.com/2014...
In recent weeks, Israel has shelled Gaza with missiles and sent ground troops into the strip to root out the militant group Hamas So far, more than 800 Palestinians have been killed, many of them civilians, and at least 36 Israelis have been killed, most of them soldiers — sparking a debate about the civilian toll, and the price paid especially by children. See also: 'Am I Going to Die, Daddy?' Remember Mr. Sketch Scented Markers? They're Back, With a Sketchy Ad - http://mashable.com/2014...
Have you seen the new commercial for Mr. Sketch scented markers? It’s a total gas. No, really, it stars a gaseous piece of fruit. See also: Ewwwvertising: Why Advertisers Want to Creep You Out The CGI-enhanced ad, running on cable TV channels and online, shows how one of those fruit-scented coloring pens got its smell. (Hint: a flatulent blueberry.) It’s a twist you may not see coming, considering the spot’s highbrow and vaguely British voiceover, but one you might not soon forget, given the high-pitched sound effect at just the right moment. The 30-second spot is the first advertising for Newell Rubbermaid’s classic drawing pens, Mr. Sketch, in nearly two decades.Ad agency BBH New York, now working with a variety of brands under that corporate banner like Sharpie, Paper Mate, Rubbermaid and Calphalon, is leading the reintroduction of the aromatic markers for the key back-to-school buying season. Mark Cuban Advocates Selling Shares of Tax-Dodging U.S. Companies - http://mashable.com/2014...
Mark Cuban, the billionaire investor and owner of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team, took to Twitter on Friday to rail against companies that adopt overseas addresses to avoid paying U.S. taxes. He urged investors to sell shares of those companies. Cuban, who expanded on his remarks in a CNBC interview, echoed comments by President Barack Obama, who yesterday said the practice, while legal, is ethically wrong. By avoiding taxes, Cuban said companies create an unfair burden by requiring the government to collect more money from everyone else. Plane Crashes Are in the News, But Air Travel Is Still Pretty Much the Safest Ever - http://mashable.com/2014...
The aviation industry as a whole may be at its safest since the beginning of flight, but airline travel still requires a leap of faith for passengers who must trust airlines and regulators to keep them safe. 'Retail Jedi' and 14 Other Absurd Job Titles - http://mashable.com/2014...
In a bid to achieve maximal hipness and happiness, companies, particularly in the tech world, have collectively begun to create bizarre new positions or to attach peculiar names to the same old corporate paper-pushing nine-to-fives. A lot of these jobs have a bizarrely spiritual flavor — “evangelists” and “prophets” — while others try and infuse excitement where there is none — “Jedi” and “heroes.” Much of this might be a way of skirting around the grim reality that life in a cubicle is neither exciting nor godly, or that work on the retail line often lacks excitement and moral stakes. Earlier this week, I wrote about the rise of  Read more... More about Tech Industry, Business, Job Titles, Jobs, and Work Play

Bose Sues Apple's Beats Over Noise-Canceling Patents - http://mashable.com/2014...
Bose has filed a lawsuit against headphone-maker Beats, alleging patent infringements centered around noise canceling technology. The lawsuit names 36 ideas patented by Bose that allegedly appear in Beats headphones, according to a report from CNBC. Bose has been a long-time player in the high-end headphone market, focusing on quality over style. Beats grew as quite the opposite — with flashy, stylized and equally expensive products with a sound that had not been particularly well-received. Despite the sound issues, Beats took less than six years to become the dominant player in the premium headphone industry with 64% of the market. Read more... Vision-Correcting Display Could Free Users From Their Glasses - http://mashable.com/2014...
Those of us who need glasses to see a TV or laptop screen clearly could ditch the eyewear thanks to a display technology that corrects vision problems. The technology uses algorithms to alter an image based on a person’s glasses prescription together with a light filter set in front of the display. The algorithm alters the light from each individual pixel so that, when fed through a tiny hole in the plastic filter, rays of light reach the retina in a way that re-creates a sharp image. Researchers say the idea is to anticipate how your eyes will naturally distort whatever’s onscreen — something glasses or contacts typically correct — and adjust it beforehand so that what you see appears clear. Medal of Honor Recipient Accidentally Smashes NYSE Gavel - http://mashable.com/2014...

Pitts was visibly excited as he began to bash the ceremonial gavel. His first whack was strong, his second was even harder, but his third strike was delivered with such force that it broke the gavel handle right in half. Science Confirms What Every Dog Owner Knows: Your Pup Gets Jealous - http://mashable.com/2014...
Man's best friend does not like anything muscling in on that friendship. The first experimental test of jealousy in dogs shows that canines nip even at stuffed pooches when these fakes take away the attention of the dogs' owners. This new findings support the view that jealousy is a primordial emotion seen not only in humans, but in other animals as well, researchers said. The results also show that jealousy does not require especially complex minds, the scientists said. Understanding jealousy is an important matter, because of the damage this emotion can trigger. "Jealousy is the third-leading cause of non-accidental homicide across cultures," said lead study author Christine Harris, an emotion researcher at the University of California, San Diego.
