- matati via Mento

- matati
- Kamangir via Bookmarklet
reminds me of the wahibi sands - the empty quarter :)- - Peter Dawson
The blogger does not mention where these shots have been taken. Presumably, this is somewhere around the Persian Gulf. - Kamangir
actually I did a 4X "sickle sand dune "bashing drive, within the Wahiba sands area. Added to this I also did a Wadi drive thru. I had a native / local person charter out our course. The 'sand's of Allah' is one of most awesome and dangerous terrestrial areas that I have ever encountered. The 'beudions' tribe , that I encountered on that trip, was one of the most accommodating, generous and gracious people on earth. Trust me, these people are so kind and gentle ! - Peter Dawson
- vivavida

- matati
"The advert features two large photographs, one of the men's basketball team, above, and one of the women's team. Both squads pose in full Olympic kit on a basketball court decorated with a picture of a Chinese dragon. Every single player appears pulling back the skin on either side of their eyes." -- oh, Spain. It's like you're racist and you don't even know it! Sad. - felix via Bookmarklet
so 15 people on a team posing for an ad sponsored and sanctioned by their chinese-owned sneaker company is indicative of an entire country being racist? that's illogical. - Cee Bee
the last time i saw someone do that in person to me was grade school. so kind of places the level of humor right around there. yes, i get it spanish bball guys... our eyes are slanted. thanks for pointing it out. truth be told, some people think it's hot. so take that. [insert sarcasm] - Christine Lu
another rhyme from elementary school: "chino, chino, japones, come kaka, no me des" - Rodfather
mona, hopefully by now you know where i'm coming from. i feel intent and cultural perspective has a lot to do with how a message is transmitted and processed. it's unfair to use american pc hypersensitivity to judge other nations, otherwise everyone and anyone can be targeted as a racist while those pointing the finger feel they are absolved while atop their highhorse - Cee Bee
Cee: Is it hypersensitivity? Or myopia? ...and I see exactly where you're coming from. I feel fortunate to be in the company of many critical thinkers. Especially on FF :) - Mona N.
I dont know.. if you do it in the mirror, it's actually pretty funny. - Rodfather
How stupid an idea was this picture (rhetorical). - TDavid
um, no sorry. i'm not big on political correctness. and i understand where cee is coming from. i'm not saying they had intent to be racist. but i think it's ignorant and leaves me no choice but to karate chop someone if they did it in my presence. see. told you i wasn't politically correct. don't f*ck with a chinese girl's fists of fury. just sayin. - Christine Lu
Christine, but what if that's PC in Spain? There are European countries which still call Asians, "Oriental". As in... an aisle in the supermarket, or a rug ;) - Mona N.
myopia can be an appropriate adjective to use as well. what i'm getting as is this -- these actions can be deemed as racist if they were to happen here, as this country has had a longstanding tradition of ridiculing immigrants, foreigners and those who don't fit the "all american" profile. in spain, a country that hasn't had quite the same tradition, it's viewed as dumb at best, but not racist. it can actually be seen as a term of endearment no matter how difficult that may be to believe - Cee Bee
in certain asian countries like japan for instance there are caricatures which depict westerners with big eyes and big noses. is that racist necessarily or does it come from a different perspective invoking a bit of innocence and/or naivete? is it fair to judge it based on the norms of this (usa) country that we have been indoctrinated with? is it their intent to be racist as well? - Cee Bee
Cee Bee. Have a look at the story behind Darlie toothpaste (formerly named Darkie). I'm Taiwanese. I will be the first to say it's racist. Do you think they sold out for bowing to pressure to be more culturally sensitive once they began expanding to other markets? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D... - Christine Lu
Christine, can you read characters? Because the 黒人 is wow. - Mona N.
Mona -- yea. my point is, at what point should a country or culture that wants to be a serious contender in hosting an Olympics maybe think about ditching the endearing slant eyed gestures or monkey chants at black soccer players during their matches? For China critics, say what you want about propaganda, but at least posters were put up teaching Chinese to be sensitive to international guests and the disabled for the Paralympics. - Christine Lu
Christine, Isn't the Internet, our discussion, this exposure, the first step? :) - Mona N.
The gesture was stupid, offensive, and meant to be hurtful. I could see Mexican soccer players yelling "Osama, Osama" during a match vs. US as the same kind of thing. What makes the Spanish incident worse is that this was an advertisement, not just a mob crowd. - Jesse P. Luna
stupid? yes. offensive? probably, but you should fully familiarize yourself with the details before saying it was meant to be hurtful. it was an ad paid & sanctioned by the chinese-owned sneaker company of the team. - Cee Bee
yes i know it was for the courier, but it was an paid for by the sneaker company from what i've gathered from various sources, as the team signed an extension to their contract with the company not too long ago. - Cee Bee
I'd say that provides a #4, hurtful with the intent of making money from being hurtful. - Jesse P. Luna
