Obviously I can't provide a lot of detailed plans and guarantees, but I can tell you that I'll do my personal best to ensure that the FriendFeed users and community are treated right. I love this product too, and don't want to see it disappear.
That's great to read! - Diego Barros 
Thank you, Paul. - joey
Good of you to recognize. - Bill Kinney
Thank you, Paul. Hearing something is always better than hearing nothing =) - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I think this was a smart move fore FF and FB - Joe Hall
What about the service? - Amit Morson
That's a start. Thanks for reaching out. - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Thanks Paul. - sean percival
Thanks Paul - Mike Doeff
We don't want it to go either. - Yolanda
I would not expect any less from such a cool guy like you, thanks! :) - Susan Beebe from iPhone
Please keep it going for as long as you can or until you can make Facebook actually work. - AJ Kohn
That's heartening, Paul. Thanks. - Admiral Anika
Thanks Paul! - Darren Heydon
We love you guys and FriendFeed.. we are just a little hurt and worried.. just please give us details as soon as possible. - Tim Hoeck
FriendFeed lets me use people as filters to turn data into information. Facebook doesn't. Until it does, please, Please, PLEASE keep FriendFeed as a destination alive. - AJ Kohn
congrats guys! facebook needs what you got! - Lorna Herf
I'm sorry that I haven't said more about this. As you can imagine, it has been an extraordinarily busy day (and I've barely slept in the past week). - Paul Buchheit
I'll add my plea to the chorus: Please don't take FriendFeed away from us. And don't make us go to Facebook (because we won't). FriendFeed means a lot to a lot of people and the thought that it will dry up and blow away shortly is very disturbing. - Fa La La La Lindsay
It's still great to hear from you Paul. Congrats on that new swimming pool full of cash. :D - Chrimmus Tad
Simply glad you're here now. You've always been a very responsive and transparent team. As much as I cringe at the thought of FF going away, I *am* happy for you and the team. - AJ Kohn
Thanks Paul. - John (a.k.a. dendroica)
Thank you kind sir. - Andrew Smith
I request you make it to the next scheduled FFundercats podcast to talk to the community. This announcement deserves a live appearance to the community. - Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Have been dealing unsucessfully with Twitter for two days, trying to get logged in...Their password reset page says"Snap we can't find you." I keep writing to Tech Support at Twitter and get their helpful auto-generated Twitter Trouble shooting email. My problem is not there. =( Hope FriendFeed does not get that blaise about helping users. @EV - SashaKane
If FB can't keep the service running, would you consider open-sourcing the thing, so we can? - Christopher Galtenberg from iPhone
Hi Paul, thanks for the assurances. In the future, I would highly suggest that you make this sort of statement shortly after the initial merger release. Thanks again. - Alex Scoble
Thanks for keeping the passion! - Shane
Nice to hear Paul. Thanks. - Mark Krynsky
I would like to give you a hug right now Paul. However, that would be awkward and April might beat me up so I will just say thank you and press the like button. - EricaJoy
Best news I have heard today. - Angus Burton
Thank you for affirming that. Much appreciated. - Karoli
A few more points that would be nice to have addressed soon. Ability to export data, tool to import friends to Facebook, and will ff.im urls continue to function? - Mark Krynsky
Amelioration?? - heretic_twit
Those that like friendfeed as is should be most pleased with this statement, as it probably means maintenance to keep the current system as is, without as much attention to new features. It's also good news for all those who like both friendfeed and facebook, as facebook will likely adopt the better features from friendfeed - Ivan Kirigin
That means an awful lot to me. - James (!?)
This has been quite a day! Can't wait to hear what is next! - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Thank you, Paul. Thank you for coming out from behind the curtain and finally giving us some communication, some semblance of hope. - Akiva Moskovitz
Thanks, Paul. - Mistletoe Glen
So we can expect a Facebook adaption of this? I like this technology over everyone else! - Shaggy Jenkins
Eric, my schedule is still a little uncertain at the moment, but I'd be glad to appear on a future FFundercats. - Paul Buchheit
That would be a good thing Paul. Thanks. - Eric @ CSTechcast.com
Cool :) - Susan Beebe from iPhone
I like this. - ashish from iPhone
Thanks for making FriendFeed what it is, and lets hope it stays that way, though there's slim chance of that - Aaman (Clone of FF)
Now that I think about it: are you kidding me? They've already stated that FriendFeed's going to be absorbed into Facebook. What kind of sleight-of-hand are you trying to pull now, Paul? - Akiva Moskovitz
@EricaJoy: I have nothing against hugs. :) - April Buchheit
Thanks! - Vincenzo Piromalli
Thanks, Paul. I've been getting more and more depressed thinking about the bad ways this could go. The reassurances help a bit, at least. In fact, just hearing you speak on the point is encouraging - the open lines of communication between the FriendFeed team and its users has always been one of the great things about FriendFeed that I'm afraid will be lost with the Facebook buyout. And yes, a FFundercats appearance would be a great idea. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
I don't want to read too much into this reassurance but the "personal best" remark made me think like there is not a united FF anymore and that it's up to your personal efforts to prevent it from being eaten by FB :) - Turker Keskinpala
you can sell the tech but the community can not be bought sold transferred or merged - Robert Higgins from f2p
Turker, I do believe that this deal was the right decision -- I'll write a bit more about that when I get a chance. I say that I'll do my "personal best" because I will -- it would be misleading to make promises on other's behalf :) - Paul Buchheit
Hoping so... practicing patience - Majento
Paul: I'm hopeful that this will be the best for both Facebook and Friendfeed. What you and the staff at FF have done is amazing, with only 12 people! I love the service here. I also enjoy Facebook (one I ignore all quizzes and stupid apps), but in a different way. Hoping some coolness can be brought to both. Good luck to you and your team! - Travis B. Hartwell
this echoes star wars galaxies, incredible unique community. but they upgraded it to be like world of warcraft. this is a replay of the devs soothing messages. the forums were livid the community evaporated. - Robert Higgins from f2p
When socialmedian was acquired by Xing they left it alone. I hope the same happens here. I'm sure you will do your best though! - Michael Fidler
On behalf of the Dutch citizens our Queen wants to let you know: Thx Paul. - Ton Zijp
Don't know what to say, so lets start with big congrats! from one hand, as an early member of Friendfeed I think we've created here a very cool, collaborative and tech-savvy/passionate community of great people that all probably wish to stick around as much as possible. From the other hand, I know how corporates work and it takes one small decision of share holders to close Friendfeed... more... - Nir Ben Yona
My first reaction is disappointment. I don't believe big corporations do better than small ones. Facebook is inferior to FriendFeed, although it's user base is much larger. Clearly FriendFeed won't survive in the long term, unless it is open sourced. Why not open up and embrace the wonders of the GPL instead of joining forces with the Walled Garden no #1? Facebook don't even operate with permalinks,. - Morten Blaabjerg
Thanks for the explanation Paul. Of course, I congratulate you guys. I think anyone would do the same thing if they were in your shoes :) - Turker Keskinpala
Very bittersweet clicking [Like] on this one. - Nicholas Kreidberg
A big congrats for you guys.. However, I feel kind of sorrow :) - Ozkan Altuner
good to hear - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Thank you - but I would very much like our content to stay intact. :) - Mona Nomura
Of course it is, Ryo. - Christopher A Carr
Ryo: if you delete your account everything goes away. I totally disagree with you about Facebook, but that's OK. - Robert Scoble
Good to hear. Unfortunately I think Facebook are going to download the brains of all FriendFeed staff then kill FF. - Michael McGimpsey
but Paul it is going to disappear - Facebook bought FF not for the site but for you guys. So obviously once its integrated into Facebook, development on FF will stop - Anthony Feint
If FriendFeed and all of it's functionality get integrated into Facebook I'm all for it. - Hugh Isaacs II
Thank you Paul! Congrats on the deal! - Garin Kilpatrick
Paul - that's great news. It surely can't cost a lot to keep this place running and it's a good place to try out ideas before they move to FB. - Martin Bryant
what about improving the product and making sure it gets more users, not only supports those who stay? - Ihar Mahaniok
Ihar - unlikely. Facebook bought FF for the developer talent, not for FriendFeed itself. - Martin Bryant from iPhone
Martin - I also think so, and it is most likely. But I could still have a hope - Ihar Mahaniok
Paul, please - underpromise & overdeliver...they say it works. - A.T.
Nice to hear. Too bad you don't call the shots anymore. - jcunwired
FriendFeed is Dead! Long Live FriendFeed! (nice name for Facebook skunkworks) I'm sure everyone would love to see FriendFeed itself stay around, even if the innovations that happen are geared towards implementation at Facebook. Thanks for this note Paul! :) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
There are a few promises and guarantees that you SHOULD be able to provide. Like, that our network of friends will remain intact and that the features that make this site great will remain. If you can't make those promises, then you shouldn't have done the deal. I sure do hope that the real-time search engine wasn't the centerpiece of this deal (it probably was), because that certainly... more... - Brad Williamson
Paul you did such a nice job with friendfeed, and I so want to believe you, but I'm not sure I can. Not because of you, but because of your new employer. Because your new employer is no longer you, and while I have kind of come to trust you, I do not trust your new boss. Not at all. Please prove me wrong, if they'll let you. - Jim Addz No Value
Paul - thanks for that reassurance. PLEASE stick to that! I was in the middle of reading and participating in a lengthy discussion off of a Robert Scoble post yesterday ... then I came up for air and saw your news. Congratulations - I have no idea what that feels like or how pumped you must be. There are so many things FF does that I LOVE...I know you know that. Please Please PLease dont' go away! Thanks! - Tobin Truog
Thank you, I think everyone here loves Friendfeed. :) - Hunt from BuddyFeed
Thanks for the personal note Paul. - Mike Reynolds
Phewww..relief ;-) - Ritu
This is nice to hear, and I really hope that FriendFeed will keep on living. I still have some pain in my stomach because of this :/ - Patrik Johansson
First zombie/mafia request and we're all outta here.... - Fossil Huntress
+1 Fossil Huntress The partitioning of the networks between friendfeed and facebook was a major feature that many people made use of, lacking appropriate controls for who sees what. Merging the two groups of friends isn't going to work, at all. - Mr. Gunn
It doesn't sound like you understand what has people worried. I wrote this to help: http://friendfeed.com/brlewis... - Bruce Lewis
And we'll appreciate this man! Try to do your best to help FF :( - FFTornado
Maybe Bruce analysis is too imaginary, but the question is THE question nobody answered: why did you do it, Paul? - Luca Sofri
I left a response on Bruce's entry (http://friendfeed.com/brlewis...). I'll write more about this on my blog when I get some free time. - Paul Buchheit
Thanks. - Bonnie Foster
we all know what needs to happen. the question is, where? ... FB needs, - apart from being/it is, a large, general, open application platform, - 1. Smart keyboard shortkatze - and Im a kbsCzar to go to, 2. Aggregating facilities, smart /RSS/ .. 3. Full blogging facilities, capabilities, not 140 chars. 4. Full real time comments facilities, capabilities. 5. Real time, live, but ALSO... more... - Petr Buben
I hope you're being open and honest with us. This time. :( - Kamilah Gill
Good to know , we´ll see :) - Yahya
Thank you! I am sure you will do great things at FB. I just hope that the great app you built here isn't destroyed. I don't know of any other aggregation app that I can embed into my site like this one! - beersage
Congratulations on your successes, best wishes for more. And thanks for continuing to look out for us loyal, addicted FFanatics! - Rob Schieber
I hope it continues, i'm a new user and absolutely love it (wish i knew the value of it before)! Congrats! - Luis D. Santos
As nice as it sounds I'm sorry to say that as a, now, Facebook's employee I'm afraid you'll have to comply to whatever your new boss tells you. Didn't MZ make it clear? - lelapin
and let me add second, obvious, "Facebook needs" - Friendfeed bookmarklet, and Friendfeed tools - widgets, embedding - real time and not - of posts, and groups ...to embedd, to inject oneself into this thing called Internet ..... so, if FB listens to FF engineering long enough, they are going to get it .. right - Petr Buben
Paul, what I am worried is not that you're brainwashed, but that there's simply no business need for Facebook to improve FriendFeed from now on, period. - Ihar Mahaniok
I have confidence Paul. While some of the comments were probably uncalled for, covering an investment (of time and money) in these times to move on and hopefully provide even 'better stuff' makes sense to me. It's pretty obvious there are a LOT of people that don't want to 'lose' Friendfeed. (I wouldn't hold a town hall for a few weeks though :) - Charlie Anzman
Congrats, Paul. It's sad that people have to make these uncalled for hatred comments about Facebook though. Why can't both sites work together. I think Facebook will do better with FF and vise versa. Take the good features of both services. Don't boycott FB, enjoy it. I'm sick of the negative comments going on, that's all. :( - Molly, "sorry"
Molly: What makes you think there's going to be a "vise versa?" - Christopher A Carr
Because I don't think Paul and the other FF developers would allow FB to do anything. I'm sorry, I am not going to think negative here like some here are. I guess I'm a fangirl for FB. - Molly, "sorry"
Finally something about the changes on the horizon that isn't all d0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0om and whining. Thank you, Paul! :D - Christian (Simply X)
The time to think about how you could do your 'personal best' to ensure FriendFeed continues to exist was prior to the discussions with Facebook. Not after. - Andy C
Paul, what about the content scam that FB T&C is, does it apply to Friendfeed now? Should we all start writing scripts to retroactively delete all content ever uploaded to Friendfeed? Elaborated a bit here - http://friendfeed.com/mbravo... - Michael Bravo
We know you'll try your best, Paul. But sometimes, you just can't win the dark side... - Winston Teo
Thanks Paul for all your efforts. Founders often want the best, but acquiring companies often have people with political/power issues or different/limited visions. - Mitchell Tsai
*throws a sheep at Paul* is that a good thing? - Joe from iPod
Yeahhhhhhh BOoooiiiiiiiii!!!!!!! - sofarsoShawn
yes, thank you, Sergeant Paul ... well, good to hear we go on ... because if not, how about starting www.anotherFeed.com ... or, www.Letsgofeed.com ...... anyway, lets boost blogging capabilities, post more than current amount of chars, lets have TOP POSTS / clicks count list at the head of each group, some stats, lets index group headers, lets have MORE keyboard shortcuts .. - now ...... more... - Petr Buben

What? No lawyers in suits? Mark's setting a pretty low bar on the dress code for this sort of thing...:) - Tomas Remotigue
Our lawyers were wearing shorts actually -- no air conditioning at their office on Sundays I guess. - Paul Buchheit
Zuckerberg's the only one from FB who could be bothered to show up? - Andy Bakun
American big business such a formal affair - Robert Higgins
Contrary to popular misconception, lawyers don't actually enjoy wearing suits. Haul us into work on a Sunday, and we'll definitely be dressing comfortably. :) - Brian Chang
Andy, the person on the left is Vaughan Smith from Facebook. Sanjeev (the fourth FriendFeed founder) is not pictured because he was boarding an airplane. - Paul Buchheit

Hey Paul congratulations - FriendFeed has been leading the way since its inception. Are the photos you've posted copy-protected or could I use them in a story on the deal? - Mitch
Mitch, feel free to use the photos. - Paul Buchheit
where's the ...friendfeed shirts then?? ;o) - Rob Sellen :o)
SWEET!!! Congratulations! - Chad Lester
...congrats.can't wait to see what happens with both FF and FB as a result of this. - .LAG liked that
Please try to keep Friendfeed like it was if they let you. Either way, congrats on the financials! - Josh Haley from iPhone
Congrats and best wishes for the future. - Jeff Stannard
For $50m you could at least have hired a photographer who doesn't shake so much. :) - Rodrigo Jaroszewski
FF was the cutting edge whereas FB is quickly becoming the mainstream. Unfortunately, the mainstream does not necessarily equal innovation and pushing the envelope. We all suffer when innovation is chilled. But on the other hand, congrats to the FF crew. They made their money! - laosan
Congratulations guys! - Diego Barros 
I think the Tiger suit would have been more appropriate! But hey....shorts in a backyard is pretty cool too. - Drea Lester

Congratulations, Paul -- to you and everybody at FF. - Eric Johnson

Looks like Mathew™ has found a UI bug by flooding contiguous characters. - Jay Cuthrell
I don't get the negativity - did no one realize FriendFeed was a business? The object of a business is to sell eventually (either privately or publicly). We should be celebrating their success. This is a huge win for them, as well as Facebook. I personally think it's a huge win for the "loyal users" as well. So now we stab them in the back when they do something huge? - Jesse Stay
Not to mention we know *nothing* about what this will mean for both services. These guys haven't let us down yet, have they? - Jesse Stay
Congratulations to all of you!! - Steve de Mena
The FB/FF deal rocks. Total win for users and developers. - Steve Gillmor

Congratulations Paul, you should have got more, but I guess $50m is nothing to sneeze at. Have a great wedding anniversary too, I'm sure you both deserve it. Much happiness - :) - Chris Loft
Congrats! The hard work paid off - Becca
Those are the kind of business meetings I could get used to - no suits... but selling to Facebook? Hmmm... Good for someone of course but I suppose we'll see where this ride takes us. - Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
congrats on building an amazing product and incredibly passionate community! I was mad at first, but then realize that the technology was most likely sold, not the community. I'm hoping ff community will stay somewhat untouched and features that have been built into ff will be ported to fb. - Derek Coatney
Congratulations, FriendFeeders! I'm anxious to see what changes this will bring. FriendFeed is my favorite site to visit, so hopefully y'all will find a way to maintain the FF spirit somehow. - Keith Pelczarski
No matter the type of big change, there are those who will not like it, often simply because it's change. I for one am very pleased that two of the services I use most are joining forces, and am eager to see the new developments that come of this acquisition. Congrats to EVERYONE on the FriendFeed team. You all deserve it! You've done a great job with a small company. Now lets see what you can do with a large one :) - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Nicely put, guruvan. - Anne Bouey
What I wonder is ... a 50-million dollar deal and no one has a camera capable of taking a clear photo? :P - Nicholas Kreidberg
Congratulations - Steve C
@Jesse Stay re: "the objective of business is to sell eventually" : Ummm, the objective of many businesses is to become profitable by providing a valuable experience to their users. Businesses that feel they can't do that are the ones that sell. - Shane Gibbons
LOL! ♫ ♫ "ooh, take the money and run"!! ♫ ♫ ;) - Vincenzo Piromalli
Congratulations to everyone involved. Well done. - Darius Dunlap
This is a very sad day in friend feed history. It is horrible because I like friend feed for how it's different from face book. I use facebook but I find it really annoying and I wouldn't use it if my friends and family weren't using it. So if Friend Feed becomes another facebook then i donno if I will keep coming to friend feed. - Colide81 (James) from iPhone

Congrats to the FF staff, but you'll have to pardon my lack of exuberance. I have mental pictures of being forced to use the FB UI and it makes me sad =( - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)

Congrats -- may the FF UI stay alive! - RateBrain
Where are the photos of everyone celebrating? No beer or champagne? - Shane
Great match-up guys ! The Fabulous Friender Boys ! - Let's see some integrated mashups and extensible apps and FF UI. Given Google and Twitter a run for their money... Looks like they are going to have to "hook-up" now ! - Mike Schmidt
Congratulations Paul and the team! Hopefully we'll still get the same simple UI for FriendFeed. I'm sure however that no matter what you do, things will turn up nicely. - Ovidiu Predescu

But Ahmed you are still being an ass about it, trying to rain on their good times. Go find a hole under the bridge where you belong. You can be sad and not have to come out all bitchy about stuff. Clear thoughtful comments instead of going all into "fuck you" mode. - Rasmus Lauridsen

FB buying FF is bad news for FF users.
Agree totally Dave - Roberto Bonini from iPhone
Why do you think so Dave? - Tim Akinbo
10000% agree, its dreadul and the big boys like Leo and Scoble cant seem to see it! - Mark
Leo laporte says "This is a big step toward an open Facebook. This has been their goal all along: a distributed Facebook." What a Crock of SHITE - Mark
They bought the people! - Mark
yeah... but it is also a smart move, they got the team.. - Rob Sellen :o)
I'm trying to give the FF team the benefit of the doubt...but I'm having a hard time with it as well. - Ken Kennedy
Born to be sold, we were used to say in the new economy era. - Federico Bolsoman
They bought the people. We Stick with that. FF guys are Smart/fast and have deep Google knowledge - Marco Massarotto from iPhone
Woah. I step away from the computer for a couple hours and this is what happens? - Travis B. Hartwell
I agree an independent Friendfeed might be preferable for we few brave FF users. But the writing was on the wall. For most users it's Twitter or Facebook or nothing at all. Aligning with Facebook is smart long term thinking if FB is planning to open up as I am convinced they are. - Leo Laporte from BuddyFeed
Let's hope that FB doesn't block people from using the 'competeition' while on FF. - shelter watch
Seems everything's headed for an autumn war Facebook <> Google Wave - Jordi Soler
At first I like the idea of FF & FB, but now I'm starting to think it's bad for FF - Ray H
hmm, an open, new version of FB that uses all of what makes FF great would be nice. - Dusty Edenfield
Leo's got the right idea, and independence is a myth - Steve Gillmor
Well, how could it possibly be a good thing? - Fleagle
Agree, I'm not a Facebook fan although I try but.. I'd definitely take FF over FB anyday. - Sharon Dexter
I prefer a FriendFeed folded into Facebook versus a FriendFeed that quietly fades away, which is the direction this was going. - Mike Doeff
Totally agree - facebook is so tedious and slow. FF is wonderful. - Zphotogal
+1 mike - Riaz Kanani
We imagine FB with the SEO juice of FF, thus intercepting search traffic... - Marco Massarotto from iPhone
I can certainly see the best ideas from FF being folded into FB but not sure what that says about the future of this site and the data it contains - Keith Harrison
Except for the whole FriendFeed dying slowly in the obscure ghetto of the digirati part. As Mike said, FF in FB is better than no FF at all. FriendFeed users are far better off having it than watching it its gradual anemia grow worse and worse until one day it vanishes. - Curtis Schweitzer
While this may never happen, consider it a possibility - your entire FB feed now available in FF. - Tim Akinbo
It is really hard to see how FB will do more than incorporate staff and ideas from FF. FriendFeed's design of being a very open aggregator is very different than FB's walled garden ethic. I also think part of what attracted me to prefer FF over FB is the clean interface, as opposed to FB fire-in-a-bordello presentation style. I hope FB really listens on the UI side and not just on the aggregator side, or works just mines out the staff. - David Lounsbury
This is a good thing for FF and FB both. This will lead to a more open FB and steal Twitter's thunder. - Tim
"the writing on the wall?" ... that's just hyperbole, Leo. Paul Buchheit himself said in his interview w/ Scoble that they could have kept the service alive "for years"...there was no financial issue forcing this, like tr.im or something. And while I suppose there are those that believe the most popular site/music/art/people are always the best, I think that's both a shallow way of... more... - Ken Kennedy
Like 4 Ken - Marco Massarotto from iPhone
What I care about most is having a Facebook profile that is *actually* public, viewable by non-users. - Andrew Roche
I definitely DONT LIKE IT grmphhh ! - laetSgo
@andrew that's one thing FF team is very good at: climbing Google :) - Marco Massarotto from iPhone
DOnt like it either. I'm off to a self hosted http://sweetcron.com/ or wait for a http://kakuteru.com/ invite. - Mario Valente
One thing that can be said about social communities - its the people who build the product. Had we not given excellent feedback to FriendFeed developers in creating our perfect world FB wouldn't have had an interest. Its our fault. :( - jcunwired
i'll agree to wait this one out before being totally devastated about Facebook buying FriendFeed - Chris Heath

It means you'll have to share. wahhhhh - Andrew Smith
I think it is a bad idea. I don't like to use Facebook except for frivolous reasons. FF has been good for reliable information. I suppose I'll stop using it so much now. We'll see. - Barbara K. Iverson
I want to see where this is going but definitely my favorite social site just got folded into my least favorite. - Braden Douglass
It depends entirely on what direction FF would have taken next (and what direction it will take Dave). Think most of us that have been around FF since almost the start (when it was a MUCH smaller place) miss that but this actually might be a good thing. - Charlie Anzman
Agreed if they lose the FF interface. - Wei-Yen Tan
If we put all our faith into a single platform or a single solution [Twitter/FB/Goog] then we lose touch with people, processes and where history is taking us. In this case, we’re headed more in the direction of where .tel and Identi.ca are stumbling, consciously or not: towards a non-web-centric, permission-based polycephalous set of systems, where discussions and messaging transpire... more... - A Mitchell
Google Wave is coming to replace all this stuff. And Google Reader will get more social features including item recommendations through comparing users likes, and so Google will win this. Good time to sell. - Charbax
Interesting convo we had there dave, thanks for letting us call in and participate. - Chris Heath
But the real question is who will take over who? Isn't there a possibility that FriendFeed will takeover Facebook! I hope FB make it work as I like the idea of FF but it doesn't have the critical mass of people talking about what I am interested in! - Phillip Molly Malone
Very bad I'm sure there will be some changes - Annika from Nambu
I agree it's probably bad news for FF users.FF has reliable info. I don't want it to become chatter. - Leigh Marriner
I'll admit to being a recent convert to FF but it was the best social site I have used yet (and I have used them all). I am sorry to see it lose it's independence. This will not end well for FF groupies. But my reading of the tea leaves is that FF options as a standalone service were not good. I guess this is a sign of a maturing market. Can a Larry Ellison acquisition be far behind? - Michael Liss
simply but clear - Gioia Feliziani
I agree with Dave's original assertion. I'm struggling to imagine the value Facebook could add to FriendFeed, and I can certainly imagine the downsides. Having an aggregator that sits independently on top of the commercial pile, while fleeting as a free service, is a valuable one. - Allred
disagree. - Gus
I have my suspicions too. But Facebook have been wanting to open up more for some time (e.g., they're eliminating regional networks), and I'm guessing they see FF as the key. I'm betting they'll fuse the two services soon. But let's hope they use FF to improve FB. But there's always a big chance FB will ruin FF. Stay tuned... - Dennis Jernberg
+1 for A Mitchell's insights. If tr.im and FF have taught us anything, it's that no matter how many open api's there are, a closed platform is still a closed platform, and it can disappear overnight. We need a decentralized yet federated way to do all that FF did (and more). If it's not decentralized, we don't have redundancy. if it's not federated, we lose community an conversation. - Don Faulkner from BuddyFeed
another +1, Don and A Mitchell. I just finished a blog post along almost exactly the same lines, Don...decentralization and federation are both key. Good news is, this is historically how things go...nerds only, then mainstream joins, but centralized (think AOL, Compuserve, Prodigy...services and email that couldn't talk to each other). As the systems mature, then value of decentralization becomes apparent. This week could actually be an important milestone in speeding up that process *here's to hoping...*. - Ken Kennedy
But Facebook buying friendfeed is great news for the 250+ million fb users! (And most ff users have fb :) - Garin Kilpatrick
It would have been better (slightly) if they were acquired by Twitter. I'm not a Twitter fan, but I think FF would bring more to twitter, it would be a better fit and the users and the interface would have a better chance at "integration" - Mario Valente
I've read its good for FF, it's bad for FF. It's better than being sold to google, it's better than being sold to twitter. Myriad variations on a theme, which leads me to conclude we haven't got a clue what the future will bring. - Mark
FB will better integrate FF than Google or others ever would -- one hopes. let's see what happens and go from there. Good news is that it will generate a ton of news for you peeps to report on. - Gavin Adams
It's simply time for a distributed story for this type of application. You shouldn't need to rely on any providers who can be down or might be bought. - Christian Scholz
"Google Wave is coming to replace all this stuff." And lock you into yet another platform owned by one company. - Ian Betteridge
@Ian...Wave is a federated, decentralized, (to be) open-sourced solution. It's complicated, but it's at worst an architecture lock-in (ie, it might be hard to move a large corpus of Wave-annotated data out of the Wave infrastructure). Unless Google is pulling a flat-out lying fast one...there won't be any reason why you can't run your "own" instance of Wave and connect to the rest of the Net. So not standard company lock-in. - Ken Kennedy
Ken, to be honest, I'll believe it when I see companies other than Google taking the code and running an equivalent service. Flat out lying? No, probably not. But "only able to do something useful if you're connected to Google in some way"? Probably. - Ian Betteridge
@Ian, I hear ya, but I've read enough of the technical specs to lay my money on the other side of that bet. - Ken Kennedy
At least Google is one company that's not likely to turn coat on its social community and sell out. - jcunwired
Really? I think the old Jaiku community would disagree with you on that. And the people who stored their bookmarks in Google Bookmarks, too. - Ian Betteridge
why? - Thomas Power
Sorry - I meant Google Browser Sync rather than Google Bookmarks. One is dead, the other alive and well(ish). But the point is that Google has a track record of killing or abandoning services when it suits. - Ian Betteridge
True, Ian. Google's "do no evil" doesn't keep them from killing things that aren't panning out for their world domination strategy. They're marginally more saintly than Facebook. - Sean Gallagher
Is it because of the Facebook ad approach that Dave W and Scoble are looking to jump ship on FriendFeed? - Sean Gallagher
Sean: I'm not jumping ship. But I will follow early adopters wherever they go. - Robert Scoble
Or Google Notebook. Even given that and Jaiku, though, which did do a blow to my faith in Google, I would rather a Google-FriendFeed than a Facebook-FriendFeed. Mostly because I think they'd let it do its own thing rather than assimilate it. They left YouTube pretty well alone. Oh well. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
disagree with FF and LI nxt year bottled up inside Facebook this forces Google MS and Apple to get seriously social and start playing rather than just watching. Google-Twitter, Apple-Facebook versus Microsoft-Bing now that's a battle I want to (socially) watch with all you guys. Oh what fun. Can't wait. - Thomas Power
I'm not sure Facebook or FriendFeed are entities whose well-being I value so highly; users, I care about, and having FriendFeed developper work their magic, their talent and their stand for open standard to benefit 300M people sounds more important to me then having them spend more time tailoring the digerati's private network. I'm far for believing you can't improve FriendFeed, but I'd... more... - Bertil Hatt
@Bertil_Hatt: if there's one thing that FriendFeed isn't it's a private network. Facebook is the one who, on the other hand, operates like a "walled garden" or a private condo. - Miguel Caetano
Only if you believe the FF has a sustainable business model? - Gary Walter (gwalter)

That's one of the questions raised in my mind: is it going to be a replacement for all social environments? - Burak "cyrus" Bayburtlu
I have a feeling it will be worth the wait............... - Kevin J Hatton
FriendFeed's not gonna disappear overnight. So far I haven't seen any timetable as to the when it will be completely folded into Facebook. I'm pretty sure both services will still be around on September 30 when the Wave invites go out. I mean, I have more faith in FB (having been a member since 2004) than the average person - I remember when it was a small, personal service like... more... - LANjackal
Yes i definitely see it the agents make for me make more sense then the current ff concept (e.g. publishing comments ...) - Gerd saurer
Google Wave will be good, no doubt. But I still think 1) It's much too hyped and 2) It's not intended to be a replacement for social media/networking but rather for collaboration. - Adam Reyher from Alert Thingy
Just thinking of the business matters here, wouldn't Facebook buying FriendFeed mean that Facebook will be our replacement for FriendFeed? I mean I like Wave, but I feel Wave and FriendFeed are far too different to be used for the same thing. - Hugh Isaacs II
Yep, FF will be integrated into FB at some point. - Kol Tregaskes
Hugh, it's a protocol, you could build whatever you like on top of it. I see huge similarities to each. - Kol Tregaskes
I know Wave is a protocol (XMPP, etc...) but the initial product won't be a FriendFeed replacement. Maybe Wave injunction with it's apis and the embedding feature we'll see a FriendFeed replacement, but the product alone is too far in another direction to be FriendFeed 2.0 - Hugh Isaacs II
Yeah!!! hope that google wave release a.s.a.p!!!! - Saiful Izham Hassan
But how do we get onto Wave? Is there a public beta coming? - Jason Remnant from iPhone

[SteroidFeed]: Here is my new way of watching feeds on FriendFeed. I call it SteroidFeed but it is also a "Multi-Talk" style interface ... the file sits locally and allows me to view multiple topics. I've attached a copy of the simple html. Feel free to modify the html but please leave attribution and share your changes. Leave a URL if on Internet.
SteroidFeed.PNG
Of course, the version I uploaded does not include my own entries but instead has the iPhone entry as an example. My local copy uses "from:lph" so I can see my entries and add comments quickly. (e.g., this comment is added through steroidfeed.html and not through the site. - LPH™ and his dog P™

Therefore, http://www.steroidfeed.com is only sitting at 3 right now. I'm also missing the instructions on how to make changes for anyone not familiar with FF. - LPH™ and his dog P™
Yes I was thinking of make 3 columns but I decided to make it 4 because my web stats shows that most visitors have a resolution at 1024x768 or higher. Maybe I will change to 3 columns. Hmm.. - Svartling

@Jesse: It's a dead twitter command "track keyword" sends you realtime updates whenever the word is used. Think of it like realtime google alerts for friendfeed. - Daniel J. Pritchett
I'm pretty sure Gillmor et al kept calling it "track" because that's what Twitter called it back when they had it for a week. - Daniel J. Pritchett
On a related note, live embeddable searches mean that I can hack together my own FF embeds for the pages that don't have them yet, like say "comment:dpritchett" http://friendfeed.com/search... - Daniel J. Pritchett

Okay, I really don't have a problem with the MM in general. As long as it's working, it works for me. I say "As long as it's working" because, if it gets too cold (and by that, I mean, not THAT cold), it slows down to a crawl, which can be very frustrating. - Fleagle

My scroll wheel had gone out on my wired MM, which was two months past warranty. I took it to an Apple Store last night, they cleaned it to no avail and handed me a new one, no fuss, no muss, no paperwork. - LogEx
Again, much like Apple's products, it is not meant to satiate everyone's needs and wants. Especially when it comes to mice, there are so many products out there that a little bit of research would help you decide if the MM is for you/not! - Guru Panguji
The concept is good. (The scroll-ball is a great idea) The implementation sucks. I found the scroll-ball would eventually get clogged with dirt, but unlike a traditional ball mouse, you can't open the mouse up in order to clean the scroll-ball. The left-clicks work fine, the right-clicks are often hit-and-miss. I do love how it connects via bluetooth and works with hardly any configuration. - Paul Grav

We just launched a "Secret email address" service that makes it possible to post to groups anonymously from any email address. This is a bit of a power-user feature, but it's a very useful for automated posting from scripts, forwarding email (e.g. customer service email), etc.
Picture 85.png
Show all
Here at the office, we use it to forward all of our mercurial changelog emails, server push notifications, etc to a private group. That way, we all see what's going on in real-time (thanks to the notifier: http://friendfeed.com/setting...), and can easily discuss them from the FriendFeed interface. To add a secret email address, click on "Import a service" in the "settings" dialog of any group. For regular posting, you should continue to use the normal email interface though (share@friendfeed.com or groupname@friendfeed.com, see http://friendfeed.com/share... for details). Thanks to Tudor for writing and launching this! - Paul Buchheit
Shhh! This is very sekret! - Andrew Trinh
Interesting. My secret FriendFeed toy. - phil baumann
I'm in my Private Group, but for the life of me I cannot find this option. Wouldn't it be under Edit Settings? - Nick in Manila
Ah. NOW I see it. - Nick in Manila
I am loving this feature idea... Very savvy for business use. Thanks! - Susan Beebe
This won't be happening in the main feed will it? Anonymous posting destroys services. - Matthew DeVries
Matthew: No. Your home feed only shows things that you're subscribed to. Of course, if you're a member of a group whose admin allows anonymous posting, and you have that group on your home feed, then the anonymous posts will show up there -- but then, you can always leave the group or remove it from your home feed. - Tudor Bosman
oh this is genius. there's so many use cases that can leverage this. platform +1 - Sameer
Groups already allow "anonymous" posts -- if you (as an admin) add a service to a group, posts originating from that service will show as belonging to the room, not to any particular user. You can think of anonymous posts (whether imported from RSS services, or posted by email) as being the responsibility of the group admins -- it's their job to police them if they deem necessary. - Tudor Bosman
I see this working for the Confessions room. What else? - Josh Haley
Sounds like the email can be sent from any arbitrary email address, not necessarily one registered with FriendFeed for an account? So the secret really needs to be kept secret to valid potential posters only. - LogEx
Logical Extremes: Yes, that is the point; it doesn't matter what address you send *from*. Sometimes you can't control the address that mail gets sent from. A few examples: your datacenter can notify you by email of any problems affecting your servers, but you'd prefer these notifications to go to a FriendFeed group. You are subscribed to a low-volume distribution list, but you'd rather... more... - Tudor Bosman
Paul has explained how we use this feature internally at FriendFeed. If one of us checks in a change (we use Mercurial for source control), Mercurial sends an email to a secret email address for a private group (that all FF engineers are subscribed to); the others see the change immediately, and we can discuss it in comments. - Tudor Bosman
Cool! Very useful for room owners. If you don't have instructions, it's very hard to find. "Sekret" - Merry Xmas FFeeders - AJ
LD: I don't understand. To which of my examples are you referring? - Tudor Bosman
Oh yeah. Laughing uncontrollably. WOW. - Webferret
It sounds like a pro-spam feature. Have you thought through all the consequences? - Tim Tyler
Tim: the group admins should keep the address secret and only share it with trusted services. If the address gets leaked, then the group can get spammed, in which case the group admins can delete it or change it (which prevents all future mail to the old address from being posted to the group). We believe it to be reasonably secure, but please let us know if you notice any problems. - Tudor Bosman
Tudor, what is that group, so we can get the engineers working on putting the service icons and service sorting back without having to hack the service with scripts? - Matthew DeVries
Matthew: :) - Tudor Bosman
Tudor, you said: "posts originating from that service will show as belonging to the room, not to any particular user". But the posts /do/ show up as belonging to the admin user in a _search result_. - Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Ahsan, that's a bug that already existed with how searches handle imported content in groups (not specific to this release and already on our list, thanks). - Dan Hsiao
LD: You're right, you can't reply from within FriendFeed. You could have the contact form send email to both the internal group and a regular email address, which you can then use to send a reply. - Tudor Bosman
Tudor: btw. regarding mercurial, what's your experience using mercurial in friendfeed vs perforce in google? - Amund Tveit
Tudor - what I really like is the business use cases you're laying out here, including your own internal engineering ones. Good stuff, as my e2.0 buddy Sameer above says. - Hutch Carpenter
using this feature to post blog uptime statistics for several blog to blog owners - Jeroen De Miranda
Its a good feeling when you know that the people behind a certain product know what there doing. Dont we FF Team? - Webferret
Use case? How can one use the best readily filtering system available (Gmail filters) with best of breed group collaboration (Friendfeed). This is GOING to become the best in its class. I can drop so many business tools(that i pay for) for just FF Private rooms - Webferret
Already is Webferret, already is... - Chris Heath
sweet - D Lets
Turn Gmail Into Your Personal Nerve Center http://www.micropersuasion.com/2007... - Webferret
Amund: Mercurial works. We use it in a mostly-centralized setup (one central repo that we sync to very often). Can't really compare performance -- our repositories are tiny compared to Google's. We can take this offline if you'd like to discuss this in more detail. - Tudor Bosman
That's a great add-on. Slowly, FF is going to be our "life center" - Ozkan Altuner
So this is kinda like when you posted the "advert"? :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Kol: not quite; the "shameless self-promotion" showed up as an entry in your home feed, without any user (or group) name attached to it. Entries imported into a room (via RSS or via email) show up as being in that room. - Tudor Bosman
OK, Tudor. I'll give it a test later. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
This is a cool idea, but it only seems to import the mail subject title only. Is that right, if so, how do we get the content of the mail in, or is it not meant to do that? - Keith Bennett from BuddyFeed
Keith: it works for me. The subject goes in the main post (FF thread title?) and the message appears as a comment to the thread. Maybe you are sending an HTML e-mail? - alieb
Cheers alieb, I just tested it by forwarding the first mail in my inbox and that didn't show anything up. Creating a mail and adding some text to the mail body works correctly. Thanks for the help. - Keith Bennett
I just figured out a new use for this feature and it goes in line with Kevin Rose's idea for an Open Source security system. http://www.facebook.com/video... He was talking about having a neighborhood watch like program. Well each neighborhood can have a private room here in FF. If someone tripped an alarm in your house, it would send an email to the secret email for the private group and everyone in the group could be notified via email,IM,SMS,etc. - Bryan Lee
I think this secret address should be reminded somewhere in each group settings window. - Zackatoustra
@Bryan Lee. shhhh lol - Webferret
Zacaktoustra: group admins will see the address in the "services" window (click "add/edit" under Services in the settings dialog). Other group members will only see the words "secret email address", as, well, the address is supposed to be secret and only visible to admins. - Tudor Bosman
could we have this for home feeds as well? some 3rd party messaging services will send from various addresses. great feature, thanks! - Mike Chelen
I'm blonde so maybe need to tell you what I'd like to do and see if it works: I would like to have my ATT mail, my Yahoo mail AND my gmail all feed into a FF room so I could read it all at the same time (ATT and Yahoo are partnered so you can't sign into both at the same time. Both go through Yahoo's sign in page.) Is this possible to create? Having ATT and Yahoo feed into my Gmail through FF would be okay as well, btw. I get FF feeds through GMail already. - Molly
Molly, what you're asking for is totally unrelated to this thread. If i was you I would set up gmail to receive the mail from your other email addresses. It's a bit complicated but can be done. Try reading this lifehacker gmail article first: http://lifehacker.com/374610... - Chris Heath
Well said Heath - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
Heath, thanks. I told you I'm blonde. :-P I tried your suggestion already and so far haven't been able to hook ATT and Yahoo to my Gmail (both being POP accounts) w/o paying extra. Will work on it again later. It's not THAT much trouble to check all three accounts from different sources. - Molly from email
Molly, another option (if att offers it - i know yahoo does) is to set up forwarding so the email is automatically forwarded from ATT and Yahoo to your gmail address. Then once in gmail you can use filtering (by the to: field) to separate out the emails - Chris Heath
I think that's the paid service from Yahoo. At least it was when I investigated it a few months ago. Thanks for thinking about it for me, though. Us techblondes need all the help we can get re: setting stuff up. I'm kind of on hold right now anyway (trying to recover my domain name and identity....... long story and boring to all but me). "Clients begin by submitting a work request form with Agency Nil. Drawing from its pool of recent grads and between-jobs business and advertising professionals, the agency gets the work done by the deadline requested. It's then up to the client to decide how much the work is worth—the only charges required to be paid are those agreed upon ahead of time for travel, proprietary research tools and production. If a client decides not to pay anything, "it's not likely that we will do work for you in the future," Agency Nil explains; then again, "we've yet to have that happen, ever." I hope I like Wave when I get to play with it but (and this isn't specific to Wave) I hope designers understand that if someone has 100 contacts, they'll identify the contact's name faster than their buddy icon. 50x50 icons (with 25x20 faces) are too small to trigger the brain's facial recognition unless you're staring right at them.
/wonders if (strongly colored) cartoon faces enhance recognition time - Philipp Lenssen
It's no accident, Philipp. :-) - Kevin Fox
In that case, I find it interesting that FF introduced 50x50 icons in addition to the names in the main feeds. Were you for or against that decision? Or is *who* posted each item not really that important? - Tony Ruscoe
In truth, when people use the same buddy icon on multiple services, their friends aren't recognizing the face in the icon; they're recalling the icon itself. So it makes sense to make an icon that's more unique than the high-spacial-frequency real-face pics, so it's more easily recognizable. - Kevin Fox
Tony: I have no problem with the icons in addition to names. They increase social bonding and sense of familiarity, but their usefulness is more for their expressive capabilities rather than as the primary means of identification. - Kevin Fox
That makes sense. I think it also holds true that seeing a real photo adds some credibility to your opinions. Of course, you don't really have that problem because you're known around here... ;-) - Tony Ruscoe
question for you kevin, where did you get your portrait from? - Wang Yip
Totally agree. I'm art directing the creation of an icon library for the company I work for and I am constantly reminding people that text is much faster to interpret than any visual representation that is limited to a few dozen pixels. Icons won't solve all your problems. - Jason Wehmhoener
I'd argue faces are better for some tasks, particularly those that involve scanning (E.g., if you're looking for a recent wave from a particular person). But I agree that having both would be helpful. - Jonathan Terleski
Jonathan: Are you assuming that the user is scanning for a particular person based on recognizing the face or recalling the buddy icon? In the former, I think the faces are just too small to allow for a fast linear search (or any non-linear 'pop-out' search). In the latter, I'd agree, though it's contingent on the icon both being easily recalled by the person before the search begins,... more... - Kevin Fox
Wang: It's my XBox Live avatar. :-) - Kevin Fox
Let's get a cognitive scientist up in this thread already. :) FF feature request: ability to suggest someone pay attention to an item (e.g. "Jonathan thinks you might like this."). Anyways ... yes, I'm talking the latter case, but even in the former, there's studies showing people can recognize faces they've seen before in like 6x6px. Interested to hear from someone that knows what goes on in your brain when viewing a field of faces vs. Just one, though.. - Jonathan Terleski
Jonathan, got some link for that 6x6px study? - Philipp Lenssen
You can click 'share' and direct-message the item to someone, or grab the shortened url and send it however you like. Back to the topic at hand though, I'm not disputing that you can recognize a person in a small picture, but that there's a higher bar for being able to find someone via a 'pop-out' search. Our brains perform pop-out searches for words all the time, but don't do it as... more... - Kevin Fox
@Philipp: first attempt to an answer... 6x6px by computer: http://www.isalliance.org/index... 7x10px by humans: http://web.mit.edu/bcs... - milivella
What's missing from the discussion about facial recognition is that in online contexts people often have only one picture as their basis for recognition. If you've never met the person you have only one or a handful of images with which to build a mental model of their appearance. In that context you're not looking for an icon with Sylvia's face on it. You're looking for Sylvia's icon.... more... - Kevin Fox
That's interesting Kevin, and explains why I get so confused when my online friends change their icons/avatars - it takes me a while to determine "oh, that was so-and-so, they changed their icon". If I didn't have the text in many cases, I'd be completely lost. I guess that's a good argument for NOT regularly changing our icons. - Ken Gidley
A roommate of mine in college did a similar study: navigating through a hierarchy of folders to find a file while relying only on filenames was significantly faster than looking at icons. We can read words faster than we can recognize images. - DGentry
