And frankly, I like adding friends with whom I have a low compatibility. It helps me hear music I never would have found in the first place. I never would have listened to a lot of my favorite music if someone hadn't said, "just try it."
- Ciaoenrico
Heh, "Music you have in common includes ABBA and Depeche Mode"...
- Tyson Key
Your musical compatibility with koltregaskes is Very Low. Music you have in common includes Sneaker Pimps, Hybrid, Snake River Conspiracy, VAST and The Boxer Rebellion. (that's because I listen to a lot of obscure stuff) http://www.last.fm/user/app103
- April
http://www.last.fm/listen... BTW, I send my Blip.FM feed to Last.FM. I fell asleep several times while listening to Blip, so there's some music in there that I don't necessarily like. But, for the most part, it's mine.
- Michael Fidler
If I played my 'best of the best' playlist one day would anyone be interested? It's 45 songs and iTunes tells me it's 4 hours. I can post a FF message when I start and finish and you can check the tunes out.
- Kol Tregaskes
Welp. Ya'll have been friended and oddly enough I only had 4 with high compatibility. Lucky for me that means there is a lot more music our there that I need to be turned on to. Thanks, Kol! :-)

FriendFeed, if done right, could easily replace Tweetdeck
- Susan Beebe
I think the "Like" button could act as a retweet button. It can already push likes to Twitter. It just needs to follow the "stranded" RT format.
- Pat Hawks
Liked is similar, but takes up too many characters and is less known by general public
- Susan Beebe
@Susan that's what I mean. If I "Like" something here, FF should just push it to my Twitter status in the form "RT @whomever [Original message]..."
- Pat Hawks
Seems to me it'd make sense so have *Twitter* entries go back over to Twitter with RT rather than Liked... maybe as an option... but it makes no sense to me to "retweet" stuff that wasn't a "tweet" in the first place.
- Ken Sheppardson
Pat - Exactly! But I also want a "RT" button as I don't always "like" a post... sorry :)
- Susan Beebe
@Ken Right. I think the system could be smart enough to figure out the difference.
- Pat Hawks
It just seems that the "Like" paradigm is quite similar to the RT paradigm on Twitter
- Pat Hawks
Only if its originally a tweet. But then again, you may not want to RT that item. Too many RT's can be spam, sort of.
- Roberto Bonini
Yes, I should have clarified that (I thougtht that was an obvious requirement) - yes RT for items originating from twitter - afterall we're talking re-TWEET right?
- Susan Beebe
"Like" should retweet. I've been saying it for a good long time now, that liking a tweet in FF should do a proper RT rather than the standard "Liked X" that FF pushes to Twitter.

whenever I check statistics of tumblr the number of visits to tumblr.com is equal to the number of visits to funkyboy.tumblr.com. Not much useful...

Tumblr is a mortification story for blogging world! : )
- Erhan Erdoğan
I have a tumblr account for personal use. after I heard about tumblr has problems with seo, I like it more
- ahmet bulent
Not trying to be contrary, but is it Tumblr that's creating the problem? Maybe partially, but very few free blogging platforms get much engine love right out of the box, and it doesn't look like a lot of effort was made to optimize it. It ranks #3 & 4 for [cara austin], right behind her main site. Google has indexed over 100 pages, many of which are just photos. No unique titles, no descriptions, very little content. Exactly what queries is this site NOT doing well for that it SHOULD do well for?
- Erik Dafforn
Interesting idea that it's not Tumblr but the content. I am planning on porting the content over to wordpress, so I'll have a one-to-one experiment to test against. I think that the big issue with Tumblr is that without a lot of customization, it isn't easy to create that SEO-friendly content - like titles, descriptions, tags, categories, etc....all that stuff that gets posts indexed....

- Melissa Chang
I knew there was a reason why I stayed on Blogger. :)
- Ontario Emperor
I did some quick testing and it appears that {PostTitle} does not do anything useful and {Caption} is not permitted between title tags. So basic SEO techniques do not appear to be usable.
- jho
The URLs are worthless and the lack of post titles makes tumblr a terrible choice if you care about search engine traffic. More here - http://tinyurl.com/5j5g56
- Bjorn Stromberg
@David You may make a good point about Tumblr being able to be customized to make it seo friendly - but the reason that I used Tumblr in the first place (and why most people use it) is b/c it's simple and you don't have to be a developer or get a developer involved to use it. Having to mess around with the code defeats that purpose.
- Melissa Chang
@Melissa That's a very big reason why I decided to launch my first blog on Tumblr. It was easy, no-fills posting. "Great," I thought. But I started to notice that Tumblr was living in its own universe: folks went lived in the Dashboard and never really escaped. Post titles and dates were never really correct. It gets frustrating when you spend time to write (and not merely bookmarklet sites) and then it vanishes into thin air.
- David Ambrose
David - I would say the same for LiveJournal and, to an extent, Facebook. Nice gardens, but walled nonetheless.
- Phil Glockner
@Phil. For sure! Great way to put it.
- David Ambrose
You are aware that you can add post titles using {block:PostTitle} {PostTitle} {/block:PostTitle} ?
- pratham
I think it's fair to say that T could be more seo-friendly by default with title tags, pulling X chars from the body as a meta desc., etc. But I also think comparing it to WP is unfair, because in many cases (not all), people post far less original content and use it differently. It doesn't seem to have crawling issues. Plenty of WP blogs do fine with URLs like /?p=50 if other things are in place. Those things now exist in WP because the community made them possible via plugins and smart templates.
- Erik Dafforn
@ptm see @Erik's response below. It's the idea of having SEO-friendly post titles as default that makes sense to the community.
- David Ambrose
Maybe a site like FF, as a third-party site giving some linkage to Tumblr posts, will be what some people need to get some search engine attention. External linkage is a big part of the puzzle that we haven't discussed. If you have a Tumblr blog and 25 active FF friends, that should start to make a difference sooner or later, providing you're writing about things that people are searching for.
- Erik Dafforn
@Erik FF is a big push to my site, but a lot comes from Twitter as well as Facebook...which is interesting.
- David Ambrose
@David that is very interesting. I'm fascinated to see how the traffic funnel develops. One benefit of FF and Twitter's "open" state is that unlike with Facebook (whose public profile shows "some" of your friends), bots see all your friends and you benefit from activity and making friends. Oddly, I would not have known about Tumblr if not for seeing people's FF feeds... So I think the two (FF and Tumblr) will benefit each other.
- Erik Dafforn
@Eric That's right on. I'll post some screenshots from Google Analytics around FF, Twitter and Facebook modules.
- David Ambrose
This discussion is disappointing, guys. Tumblelogs (and Tumblr specifically) can index EXTREMELY well, which actually forced us to turn away droves of affiliate spammers after we became their platform of choice last summer. My silly tumblelog at davidslog.com is 1st on Google for "david karp" and 17th for "david" (above David Pogue). There have been some seriously uninformed comparisons...

@David I'm not saying that this conversation is "FUD"; rather, quite the opposite. Thanks for stopping by and implementing the features.
- David Ambrose
Wow, that's a fast response. I'll be happy about the {PostTitle} summary!
- rodmitch
@ptm Yes I am aware of it but as of yesterday it was not producing anything really useful. @David Karp, good to see that you are listening to the conversation. I would suggest 2 things. 1) Make both {PostTitle} and {Caption} available in the title as well as meta description (or make Caption = PostTitle) and 2) enable Title as url so that something like http://foo.com/posts... works. Looking forward to the improvements.
- jho
Tumblr does index well. Particularly if you use text posts with titles.
- Chris M
SEO has nothing to do with Tumblr and everything to do with how your theme is written. This is the same thing with Wordpress. The idea that Tumblr somehow is inherently poor for SEO is based on misinformation.

if you were in the the synthesizer business, the 80s WERE great.
- Vicarbott
The 80s WERE great (except politically).
- Spidra Webster
The 80s were great for rock, too, Jim. Los Lobos, X, The Blasters all came to prominence in the 80s
- Spidra Webster
Yeah we already had the 80s music thread. It was stuffed with all kinds of goodness.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
I saw that thread, Alex. Notice I did not comment.
- Vicarbott
I do like Los Lobos though. I must admit that.
- Vicarbott
i love some of the music from that decade, but i wasn't thinking about music... i was thinking about everything else.
- Joe The Sausage
Every decade has standout music. But I just automatically associate the 80s with mulptiple layers of fairlight and DX7s. Gah! GAH!
- Vicarbott
It's hard to look at a whole decade and say whether it's good or bad though...The 60s sucked by large measures, as did the 70s, the 80s had issues, the 90s were generally good, this decade has pretty much blown, but musically there was good stuff coming out of each and every one of those decades...and of course there was a lot of dreck.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
The decade began with a frenzy of fear about the Y2k millennium bug, a crazy election, 9/11, dot-com bubble, Enron, Iraq/Afghanistan, financial meltdown, a Black President, etc. Music, Film and even books will be judged 5 years from now BUT think of the major change: Digital and what it means for labels. I like the term the Decade of Disruption, this decade (though is sucked) sure wasn’t dull.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
I suppose it is too soon to really judge this decade, but the first things I think about are all horrible things. I suppose this was one of the standout decades for TV though (almost due to HBO alone).
- Rob H.

one of the many last bits of awful 00ness will be the sneaking in of a universal DMCA on an international level. a poorly kept secret.

I wasn't around for the '80s, but I agree with Mark Nielsen in that the '00s were much more intense than the '90s.

Skin wrinkling, hair graying and lip height were significantly and independently associated with how old the women looked for their age. The appearance of facial sun-damage was also found to be significantly correlated to how old women look for their age and was primarily due to its commonality with the appearance of skin wrinkles. - Thanks Michael Stiber for posting this at Facebook http://facebook.com/mstiber
- Mitchell Tsai
from Bookmarklet
There was also considerable variation in the perceived age data that was unaccounted for. Composite facial images created from women who looked young or old for their age indicated that the structure of subcutaneous tissue was partly responsible.
- Mitchell Tsai
Heritability analyses of the appearance features revealed that perceived age, pigmented age spots, skin wrinkles and the appearance of sun-damage were influenced more or less equally by genetic and environmental factors.
- Mitchell Tsai
Hair graying, recession of hair from the forehead and lip height were influenced mainly by genetic factors whereas environmental factors influenced hair thinning.
- Mitchell Tsai
These findings indicate that women who look young for their age have large lips, avoid sun-exposure and possess genetic factors that protect against the development of gray hair and skin wrinkles. The findings also demonstrate that perceived age is a better biomarker of skin, hair and facial aging than chronological age.
- Mitchell Tsai
Unfortunately, my lip height has never been good. However, I've never smoked, I haven't done many drugs (legal or illegal) and my pale skin has kept me out of the sun most of the time. Even though I've never died my grey hair (I got my first grey hair at 18), I still usually get guessed at younger than I am.
- Spidra Webster
Competing interests: Although no products were tested or involved in this manuscript, it is possible this manuscript could promote sales of anti-wrinkle creams which might lead to financial gain for Unilever PLC.
- Mitchell Tsai
Spidra: Most people say I look 8-12 yrs younger, but I also started gray hairs early (around 17-19). Looking younger as a guy was not an asset until I reached the late-30s & early-40s (20-30-something women don't generally want to date a guy who looks 18-21 at age 30). Now it is helpful because at age 43, many guess my age at 30-35, and in our society that's considered dateable.
- Mitchell Tsai
Note: Some other studies show that "hair health" is a major factor in perceived age/health, and that people often guess age pretty well viewing someone's hair from behind... :-) http://ff.im/ciDhu From the seven article "Barbie" series http://friendfeed.com/search...
- Mitchell Tsai
I find plenty of older guys hot. Even now that I'm middle aged and older means older than 50 to me.
- Spidra Webster
Pat Schroder (Rep from Colorado, age 69) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... is someone I've always thought was hot. Self-confidence, high ability, lofty morals, and good character have always been attractive to me. As a friend once described, sometimes physically-beautiful people exhibit "spiritual bad breath" once they open their mouths. :-) Everyone's got different ideals though - many are attracted to dysfunctional people - perhaps due to their stage-of-growth in life.
- Mitchell Tsai
Oh yeah. Attractiveness is so much more than looks. I guess I was just saying that a man being older is not in and of itself a turnoff to me. And some people act like it should be. Of course, there's a longer tradition of women being attracted to older men than men being attracted to older women. It's why people make so many jokes about cougars. Yet films routinely have male actors starring with female love interests 15 or more years younger than they are and no one says anything about that.
- Spidra Webster
"Amy Wilson in the Lexington Herald-Leader has an in-depth story on just what went on when two Lexington, KY librarians library workers were fired for withholding a copy of THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN: BLACK DOSSIER from an 11-year-old girl. [...] According to the story, Sharon Cook, 57, above left, and Barbara Boisvert, 62, above right, basically colluded to keep the book out of circulation — Cook, who had become disturbed by the book’s imagery, checked it out for a year, meaning no one else could check it out. However, when an 11-year-old girl put it on hold, Cook was unable to continue her delaying tactic — and Boisvert stepped in, removing the hold, and keeping the book out of circulation. Both were fired for their actions. The Jessamine County Public Library has not commented on what they call a personnel matter."

1) Drunken sex is absolutely terrible. I prefer being able to remember my experiences 2) The 1/20 girls who've never had sober sex don't have an inhibitions problem, they have a *drinking* problem. Any girl like that is simply an alcoholic, period. AVOID.
- LANjackal
^ Good point, given how I'd phrased my comment. The same way you remember having a "rough time" after heavy drinking although you don't know the exact details. You just know it was bad from the bits and pieces you can string together. Also, "terrible" is relative ... when you compare sober encounters between yourself and someone who really knows how to please you (such as a gf or FWB) to drunk crap, the difference is immediately apparent (for me at least). I'll take the sober encounter 10X over

I think that EVERYONE is racist. We can't help it. We're born into a situation and we identify with people "like us". What defines you is whether you have the capability to look beyond those inclinations to judge people based on what they look like and where they come from and instead on what they do and how they treat you (get to know them).
Thanks Lindsay. I've worried about this recently! I'm glad to hear a different perspective on it that I had never considered.
- Liana Shanes
I'm not sure saying we're born racist is the right term. Racist implies hatred toward another race (at least to me it does). However I do agree that we automatically assume we're "normal" and everyone who is different from us isn't.
- Kenton
I agree that we are all prejudiced in some way.
- Kevin L
@Kenton - if racist is too strong, then Kevin's suggestion of prejudiced will suffice. It's about "us" and "them". @William - that's why I said you're born into a situation... not born racist, but born into an environment that fosters racism, you will be a racist to some degree....

- anna sauce
Yep. The ability to discern and judge is not always a bad thing. How else would we be able to make decisions on anything or anyone? 1UP, Lindsay.
- Josh Haley
I don't think we're born racist, but racism is pretty heavily inculturated, so it's hard not to absorb it.
- John (bird whisperer)
I see it as an acknowledgment that there are experiences that you don't directly have, that others have. I'm not racially discriminated against as I'm white. But I respect those who say it happens to them. I've seen situations where others have been treated differently because of their apparent race, but it hasn't' happened to me. That doesn't mean it hasn't happened.
- anna sauce
I grew up with a trucker dad and got to go on many road trips so I got to see the full extent of racism at the varying truck stops and gas stations, etc. I'd even hear choice stuff on the cb radio. I had to decide to look past it at an early age and to this day I am able to and interact with people as people instead of by their skin color. But I'm by no means cured or perfect. I still judge people a lot. It takes work...
- Jonathan Hardesty
from Android
there will always be an other for the human mind matures first by identifying "I"
- thequark
I agree with John that I don't think we're born "racist". We may have an innate tendency to want to sort things (and people) by their apparent "types" and create some order, but that doesn't automatically translate into racism (which is more of a set of beliefs, in my opinion). It's all about what one does with that sorting tendency.
- Kamilah Reed (K. Gill)
Again, I think it's dependent on environment too... but we are all born INTO a situation... whether that situation promotes racism or not is the difference... and pretty much every situation has some component of "us" and "them". It's mainly a matter of how much emphasis is placed on that idea as to how prejudiced you turn out to be. You're not born WITH the prejudice, but you're born INTO it...
- Lindsay
I think that everyone is "prejudiced". I look at racism as a social construct rather than just a state of mind or beliefs.
- Shey
Just saw this thread. Sigh... I just don't know how valuable such conversations are. I will submit to the idea that people are not objective - period. People always view the world through the color of the glasses given them by experience and beliefs. If you've experienced descrimination consistently or harsh treatment by people that openly do so due to your skin color, you'll likely believe so strongly in that as a social force that it permeates everything you experience.
- Jason Nunnelley
I think everyone is a lot of things. One of those things can be racist, but to say it always is or has to be is a bit overreaching.
- Richard Lawler
Shey said something important. Many people define racism as a belief that people different than you are inferior. That language use primarily resides among majority racial groups. If you studied liberation theology or civil rights from an oppressed perception, walking a mile in black men's shoes, you'll likely define racism as a racial group oppressing another racial group through social structures and denial of opportunities. Black Americans [can't] be racist by this definition.
- Jason Nunnelley
I'm a "nurture" guy, i think we all start with identical natures... I think everything we become we learn ...from our parents, our friends and neighbors, our environment, our culture, and the belief systems that are imposed on us. I agree mostly with Shey on this. I just wish we were all the same color, because then we could discriminate on truly meaningful distinctions ...like: all Red Sox fans suck, and so on... of course, your mileage may vary.
- .LAG liked that
I agree about the Red Sox...as well as all other Baseball teams. *ducks*

MAYBE I MISSED THE REASON WHY YOU CHOOSE TO DO SO.OH, AND IT DOESN'T SEEM LIKE THIS LINDSAY HAS A CLUE WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT, SO MAYBE YOU SHOULD START FROM THE BEGINNING.
- Rah-PM 2012
You aren't going to make people like you, much less apologize, by attacking them when they don't even know who you are or what they supposedly did to you. I don't have any quarrel with you and I hope you realize you don't have one with me. Let's just let each other be.
- Lindsay
I remember making ONE COMMENT and it was not directed at you... I didn't even read the thread... just the original post. How can you possibly hold that entire thread against me?
- Lindsay

Found the original thread.. Sadly your comments don't show Rebecca. Would be much easier to read then.
- Rasmus Lauridsen
I'm guessing Rebecca is about 14 and doesn't quite understand what FriendFeed is for. I once saw a similar thing on a mailing list (remember them) where someone was yelling "stop sending me these emails!" It was funny, but unfortunate.
- Rob Fisher
THATS WHAT LINDSAY SAID - YOU GOT75 OR MORE COMMENTS AND YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT RACE.YOU GUYS DONT HAVE A BRAIN OR U WOULD BE TALKING ABOUT SOMETHING MORE IMPORTANT-AIRHEADS.
- R_ C
Amazing trolling skills, goodbye Rebecca it was fun knowing ya
- Rasmus Lauridsen
No no, we are not racist! We just like the idea that we are different! :)
- mak100
Whether we want to accept it or not, we're all subjective creatures. We may strive to be objective in our perspective on issues, but we can't truly see the world through any lens but our own eyes. With effort we can hopefully compensate for the biased distortions and filters that we acquire through our individual experience, but as they say: "We don't know what we don't know." So how...

I think the real problem is that when it comes to a disagreement between those of a different race, that people jump to the conclusion that it's because of racism.
- Mike Shields
Shey, good post. I may be a person who can't identify with people that are subjected to racism, but I don't consider myself someone who perpetuates or participates in ongoing racism. I think the term means extremely different things to people based on whether or not they identify with its application. People that have experienced institutionalized racism have a significantly different perspective on what racism is and what it does.

+1 Kevin. I hate racists - does that make me a bigot?
- Bill Sodeman
Just as with everyone, there are good & bad people within ALL races, just as there are good white ppl there are also good black ppl, good native americans, good jewish, good whozitz, etc.. The reverse is also true. That is to say that there are also BAD white ppl, black ppl, etc. etc.. Live long(er) & prosper. ~:)

You know what.. that's it! I'm never going to school again!!! Never leaving the house, either!! Every time I do, I miss stuff. Missed an excellent conversation, and entertainment, all rolled up into one. Oh, and my chance to post ALL IN CAPS, CUZ THAT'S REALLY HOW I ROLLZ!!
- Bette Cooper
Outsanity, not a good idea to mess with possibly crazy people that way. I suggest you delete your cmt.

Danny, even if I were 99% sure you were right, which I'm not, I would still give the same advice. Don't risk it.

I have to agree with Bruce... Sorry, Outsanity.. I don't have any quarrel with her even if she is lacking in tactfulness. I don't want anyone to attempt suicide because of a suggestion in one of my threads. :( I wish her no harm (in fact, I hope she gets some help... or a friend... she seems to need it).
