cute but what happened to festivus this year?
- Laura Norvig
Merry Christmas to the FriendFeed team. You guys rock! FriendFeed reacts quickly and you're adding wonderful features all the time (Thanks soooo much for the "edit" feature.)
- Mitchell Tsai
Happy Holidays FF crue -- you've made this an excellent and memorable year for many of us. Facebook couldn't have done it without you! :)
- Christopher Galtenberg
w00t you gave me the best online year in 15 years!!! ;p Thanks a lot, everyone, for what you've done here XD
- ElijahBailey-Zu of FF <0,
Sigh. Sometimes it is the little touches, like seasonal logos or easter eggs, that mark a site as a living project, and that you really miss when the developers have all moved on to something else.
- Michael R. Bernstein
the 80s was truly awful and lead to the 00s being possible, tho.
- Joe Silence
The 80s were great...what the heck kind of nonsense are you talking?
- Alex Scoble
Pulp Fiction, The Chronic, Goodfellas, and Seinfeld. I thought the 90s was okay. The 80s were okay also, just not so great around the areas Alex likes. ;)
- Cristo
if you were in the the synthesizer business, the 80s WERE great.
- Jim Misses SP
The 80s WERE great (except politically).
- Spidra Webster
The 80s were great for rock, too, Jim. Los Lobos, X, The Blasters all came to prominence in the 80s
- Spidra Webster
Yeah we already had the 80s music thread. It was stuffed with all kinds of goodness.
- Alex Scoble
I saw that thread, Alex. Notice I did not comment.
- Jim Misses SP
I do like Los Lobos though. I must admit that.
- Jim Misses SP
i love some of the music from that decade, but i wasn't thinking about music... i was thinking about everything else.
- Joe Silence
Every decade has standout music. But I just automatically associate the 80s with mulptiple layers of fairlight and DX7s. Gah! GAH!
- Jim Misses SP
It's hard to look at a whole decade and say whether it's good or bad though...The 60s sucked by large measures, as did the 70s, the 80s had issues, the 90s were generally good, this decade has pretty much blown, but musically there was good stuff coming out of each and every one of those decades...and of course there was a lot of dreck.
- Alex Scoble
The decade began with a frenzy of fear about the Y2k millennium bug, a crazy election, 9/11, dot-com bubble, Enron, Iraq/Afghanistan, financial meltdown, a Black President, etc. Music, Film and even books will be judged 5 years from now BUT think of the major change: Digital and what it means for labels. I like the term the Decade of Disruption, this decade (though is sucked) sure wasn’t dull.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
I suppose it is too soon to really judge this decade, but the first things I think about are all horrible things. I suppose this was one of the standout decades for TV though (almost due to HBO alone).
- Rob Haas
I guess we did live in interesting times! Boo.
- Andrew C
one of the many last bits of awful 00ness will be the sneaking in of a universal DMCA on an international level. a poorly kept secret.
- Joe Silence
And such a construct will change exactly the same thing that the DMCA changed...which is to say not much.
- Alex Scoble
I wasn't around for the '80s, but I agree with Mark Nielsen in that the '00s were much more intense than the '90s.
- Raphael, Raphael
Skin wrinkling, hair graying and lip height were significantly and independently associated with how old the women looked for their age. The appearance of facial sun-damage was also found to be significantly correlated to how old women look for their age and was primarily due to its commonality with the appearance of skin wrinkles. - Thanks Michael Stiber for posting this at Facebook http://facebook.com/mstiber
- Mitchell Tsai
from Bookmarklet
There was also considerable variation in the perceived age data that was unaccounted for. Composite facial images created from women who looked young or old for their age indicated that the structure of subcutaneous tissue was partly responsible.
- Mitchell Tsai
Heritability analyses of the appearance features revealed that perceived age, pigmented age spots, skin wrinkles and the appearance of sun-damage were influenced more or less equally by genetic and environmental factors.
- Mitchell Tsai
Hair graying, recession of hair from the forehead and lip height were influenced mainly by genetic factors whereas environmental factors influenced hair thinning.
- Mitchell Tsai
These findings indicate that women who look young for their age have large lips, avoid sun-exposure and possess genetic factors that protect against the development of gray hair and skin wrinkles. The findings also demonstrate that perceived age is a better biomarker of skin, hair and facial aging than chronological age.
- Mitchell Tsai
Unfortunately, my lip height has never been good. However, I've never smoked, I haven't done many drugs (legal or illegal) and my pale skin has kept me out of the sun most of the time. Even though I've never died my grey hair (I got my first grey hair at 18), I still usually get guessed at younger than I am.
- Spidra Webster
Competing interests: Although no products were tested or involved in this manuscript, it is possible this manuscript could promote sales of anti-wrinkle creams which might lead to financial gain for Unilever PLC.
- Mitchell Tsai
Spidra: Most people say I look 8-12 yrs younger, but I also started gray hairs early (around 17-19). Looking younger as a guy was not an asset until I reached the late-30s & early-40s (20-30-something women don't generally want to date a guy who looks 18-21 at age 30). Now it is helpful because at age 43, many guess my age at 30-35, and in our society that's considered dateable.
- Mitchell Tsai
Note: Some other studies show that "hair health" is a major factor in perceived age/health, and that people often guess age pretty well viewing someone's hair from behind... :-) http://ff.im/ciDhu From the seven article "Barbie" series http://friendfeed.com/search...
- Mitchell Tsai
I find plenty of older guys hot. Even now that I'm middle aged and older means older than 50 to me.
- Spidra Webster
Pat Schroder (Rep from Colorado, age 69) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... is someone I've always thought was hot. Self-confidence, high ability, lofty morals, and good character have always been attractive to me. As a friend once described, sometimes physically-beautiful people exhibit "spiritual bad breath" once they open their mouths. :-) Everyone's got different ideals though - many are attracted to dysfunctional people - perhaps due to their stage-of-growth in life.
- Mitchell Tsai
Oh yeah. Attractiveness is so much more than looks. I guess I was just saying that a man being older is not in and of itself a turnoff to me. And some people act like it should be. Of course, there's a longer tradition of women being attracted to older men than men being attracted to older women. It's why people make so many jokes about cougars. Yet films routinely have male actors starring with female love interests 15 or more years younger than they are and no one says anything about that.
- Spidra Webster
"Amy Wilson in the Lexington Herald-Leader has an in-depth story on just what went on when two Lexington, KY librarians library workers were fired for withholding a copy of THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN: BLACK DOSSIER from an 11-year-old girl. [...] According to the story, Sharon Cook, 57, above left, and Barbara Boisvert, 62, above right, basically colluded to keep the book out of circulation — Cook, who had become disturbed by the book’s imagery, checked it out for a year, meaning no one else could check it out. However, when an 11-year-old girl put it on hold, Cook was unable to continue her delaying tactic — and Boisvert stepped in, removing the hold, and keeping the book out of circulation. Both were fired for their actions. The Jessamine County Public Library has not commented on what they call a personnel matter."

Anyone wanna be the one to tell these two about LOST GIRLS?
- Steven Perez
There was a conversation about this earlier here: http://ff.im/bc8Vc Thanks for the update! These two used a method that is advertised among would-be book censors and banners, do their best to make sure a book isn't available to anyone. It really disgusts me.
- Katy S
Still laughing because RAPatton and I had the same reaction. :D
- Steven Perez
Yeah, that was funny! I was just reading the comments for this article and saw that someone there mentioned it, too.

My brother in law in the Philippines can't be dissuaded from naming his son Elmo. I hope that unborn boy is ready to be tormented for the rest of his life. Why do parents do that to their kids?

You know, in my heart I hope that people like NPH who seem just so damn awesome on the screen are just as cool in real life. Anyone met the fellow in person?
- Adam Lasnik
I'm sure he's a decent guy. Never met him, though.

Gross. I just unliked to be contrary. Yet another reason why I pulled back from FriendFeed. And why getting swallowed up by Facebook, the great leveler, couldn't make more sense.

The one time I thought to try alcohol before sex we got distracted drinking and talking to friends online and just went to sleep after. Maybe I should try drinking more often...
- Heather
I could drop a few names, but I'm not one to do that... Silly girls.

I never got the drunk sex thing, it's not fun. It's not like just your face goes a little numb: that happens everywhere...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Seems like there's a big difference between a couple glasses of red wine and getting drunk off your ass. Well, unless your tolerance is really low.
- Cristo
News Flash: Alcohol inhibits more than just your inhibitions! Drunk sex is not quality sex. It's more like pathetic sex. A little something to "take the edge off" is fine. Getting smashed? No.
- Mark "DerBingle" J
Drunk sex at night - farmers delight. Sober sex in the morning - shepards warning.
- Toby Graham
MiniMage, good for you. If that's the case, the cost of fine wine should be much cheaper, provided you can keep the remaining wine in an oxygen-free bottle (and provided I'm not around ;)
- Cristo
ooh so that was what i missed last time! :)
- Mahmood Padura
1) Drunken sex is absolutely terrible. I prefer being able to remember my experiences 2) The 1/20 girls who've never had sober sex don't have an inhibitions problem, they have a *drinking* problem. Any girl like that is simply an alcoholic, period. AVOID.
- LANjackal
LANjackal, so allow me to pose a question: How do you know drunken sex is absolutely terrible? :)
- Cristo
^ Good point, given how I'd phrased my comment. The same way you remember having a "rough time" after heavy drinking although you don't know the exact details. You just know it was bad from the bits and pieces you can string together. Also, "terrible" is relative ... when you compare sober encounters between yourself and someone who really knows how to please you (such as a gf or FWB) to drunk crap, the difference is immediately apparent (for me at least). I'll take the sober encounter 10X over

Just turned on Pidgin and got flooded with a backlog of messages from Rebecca Coleman, in which I learned that I am fat because I can't take the pie out of my mouth. I think that EVERYONE is racist. We can't help it. We're born into a situation and we identify with people "like us". What defines you is whether you have the capability to look beyond those inclinations to judge people based on what they look like and where they come from and instead on what they do and how they treat you (get to know them).
Thanks Lindsay. I've worried about this recently! I'm glad to hear a different perspective on it that I had never considered.
- Liana Shanes
I'm not sure saying we're born racist is the right term. Racist implies hatred toward another race (at least to me it does). However I do agree that we automatically assume we're "normal" and everyone who is different from us isn't.
- Kenton
I agree that we are all prejudiced in some way.
- Kevin L
racism (more precisely, ethnocentrism) is a developmental stage - little kids aren't racist, but they can grow into such perspectives around the age of seven or so, and if it is not encouraged and supported by the parents and environment, they will grow out of it in their teens - the measure of a person is whether or not they develop beyond that stage into a more worldcentric perspective - about 30% of the population in America never does
- William Harryman
@Kenton - if racist is too strong, then Kevin's suggestion of prejudiced will suffice. It's about "us" and "them". @William - that's why I said you're born into a situation... not born racist, but born into an environment that fosters racism, you will be a racist to some degree....
- Fa La La La Lindsay
"I believe the correct term is xenophobic" [Flight of the Conchords] :)
- Kevin L
... except, perhaps for Steve Martin, who grew up a poor black child in the South.
- anna sauce
Yep. The ability to discern and judge is not always a bad thing. How else would we be able to make decisions on anything or anyone? 1UP, Lindsay.
- Josh Haley
I don't think we're born racist, but racism is pretty heavily inculturated, so it's hard not to absorb it.
- John (a.k.a. dendroica)
I see it as an acknowledgment that there are experiences that you don't directly have, that others have. I'm not racially discriminated against as I'm white. But I respect those who say it happens to them. I've seen situations where others have been treated differently because of their apparent race, but it hasn't' happened to me. That doesn't mean it hasn't happened.
- anna sauce
I grew up with a trucker dad and got to go on many road trips so I got to see the full extent of racism at the varying truck stops and gas stations, etc. I'd even hear choice stuff on the cb radio. I had to decide to look past it at an early age and to this day I am able to and interact with people as people instead of by their skin color. But I'm by no means cured or perfect. I still judge people a lot. It takes work...
- Jon, the Chilled Beartato
from Android
there will always be an other for the human mind matures first by identifying "I"
- thequark
I agree with John that I don't think we're born "racist". We may have an innate tendency to want to sort things (and people) by their apparent "types" and create some order, but that doesn't automatically translate into racism (which is more of a set of beliefs, in my opinion). It's all about what one does with that sorting tendency.
- Kamilah Gill
Again, I think it's dependent on environment too... but we are all born INTO a situation... whether that situation promotes racism or not is the difference... and pretty much every situation has some component of "us" and "them". It's mainly a matter of how much emphasis is placed on that idea as to how prejudiced you turn out to be. You're not born WITH the prejudice, but you're born INTO it...
- Fa La La La Lindsay
I think that everyone is "prejudiced". I look at racism as a social construct rather than just a state of mind or beliefs.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
Just saw this thread. Sigh... I just don't know how valuable such conversations are. I will submit to the idea that people are not objective - period. People always view the world through the color of the glasses given them by experience and beliefs. If you've experienced descrimination consistently or harsh treatment by people that openly do so due to your skin color, you'll likely believe so strongly in that as a social force that it permeates everything you experience.
- Jason Nunnelley
I think everyone is a lot of things. One of those things can be racist, but to say it always is or has to be is a bit overreaching.
- Richard Lawler
Shey said something important. Many people define racism as a belief that people different than you are inferior. That language use primarily resides among majority racial groups. If you studied liberation theology or civil rights from an oppressed perception, walking a mile in black men's shoes, you'll likely define racism as a racial group oppressing another racial group through social structures and denial of opportunities. Black Americans [can't] be racist by this definition.
- Jason Nunnelley
I'm a "nurture" guy, i think we all start with identical natures... I think everything we become we learn ...from our parents, our friends and neighbors, our environment, our culture, and the belief systems that are imposed on us. I agree mostly with Shey on this. I just wish we were all the same color, because then we could discriminate on truly meaningful distinctions ...like: all Red Sox fans suck, and so on... of course, your mileage may vary.
- .LAG liked that
I agree about the Red Sox...as well as all other Baseball teams. *ducks*
- Josh Haley
Racism, the belief that your race is superior, ethnocentrism, the belief that your ethnic group is superior, and prejudice, or pre-judging, are all different. People seem to interchange them as synonyms. The distinction is subtle but important. I believe there are few true racists left but a vast amount of ethnocentrists. To Lindsay's point prejudice seems inherent to me; prejudice against vegans or dog lovers. Ethnocentrism and racism seem to be learned behaviors

I don't think that everyone is racist, and there is more at work here then just having a strong preference for "people like us". I think a lot of effort has gone in to establishing (then reinforcing) the idea of inherent superiority. I think that its something that we experience so often that we may not even be aware of the way it has shaped our opinions. Its as though we are fish, and this commonly held idea (of some as being less than) is the water in which we swim.
- J. Abdul-Qahhar
No no, we are not racist! We just like the idea that we are different! :)
- Mehmet (mak100) Akyuz
Whether we want to accept it or not, we're all subjective creatures. We may strive to be objective in our perspective on issues, but we can't truly see the world through any lens but our own eyes. With effort we can hopefully compensate for the biased distortions and filters that we acquire through our individual experience, but as they say: "We don't know what we don't know." So how...

I think the real problem is that when it comes to a disagreement between those of a different race, that people jump to the conclusion that it's because of racism.
- Mike Shields
Shey, good post. I may be a person who can't identify with people that are subjected to racism, but I don't consider myself someone who perpetuates or participates in ongoing racism. I think the term means extremely different things to people based on whether or not they identify with its application. People that have experienced institutionalized racism have a significantly different perspective on what racism is and what it does.

Like she is going to do anything. She's a troll, nothing more.
- Danny Minick
Danny, even if I were 99% sure you were right, which I'm not, I would still give the same advice. Don't risk it.
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
I have to agree with Bruce... Sorry, Outsanity.. I don't have any quarrel with her even if she is lacking in tactfulness. I don't want anyone to attempt suicide because of a suggestion in one of my threads. :( I wish her no harm (in fact, I hope she gets some help... or a friend... she seems to need it).
- Fa La La La Lindsay
HOLY CRAP. THE LADY HAS A BROKEN KEYBOARD.
- AJ Batac
"___ has a private feed." pretty much says it all.
- Joe Silence
You know, I really dislike it when other people assume I am someone I'm not and start taking out their grudges against the other person on me. I don't go around picking fights and I don't want any piece of that.
What is the deal? I don't even know who this person is and she starts attacking me and basically implying I should be shot...
- Fa La La La Lindsay
Yep, the use of CAPPing got confusing and a tad worrisome.
- SAM
OH. WAIT. NOW I GET IT. I NEED TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS TO COMMUNICATE. SO, YOU ARE SAYING THAT YOU WANTED EVERYONE TO BE A RACIST AND THEN YOU DENIED IT LATER. SO YOU SHOULD GET WHAT'S COMING TO YOU. (I like the pretty green light when the capslock key is on)
- Cristo
Maybe my comments will help. If not we can all just block her. Problem solved! I love Friendfeed!
- Chrimmus Tad
Me too, Scott... me too. Maybe morning light will clarify things.
- Fa La La La Lindsay
Crisco er w/e the jank your name is, you be trollin.'
- Danny Minick
Danny, I'm not so sensitive to be hurt by being called a troll, but I think most people know I was joking. Tell me, what's the best restaurant in Kansas City, because I might go there someday, and I value your opinion.
- Cristo
So, what is the etiquette on taking a sick day when one is not employed? Somehow being a lazy slug on the couch watching TV, drinking tea, and eating soup doesn't feel right when it's something I could technically do every day.
If you treat your life as if you're still employed, with a strict schedule and all, then it's fine. If you don't, then what's the difference anyway?
- Akiva Moskovitz
I don't know, but it *has* to be something more decadent than you would normally do...so - not bother going to the bathroom when you need to, er, go to the bathroom?
- WorldofHiglet
Well, if the idea is to get well faster, consider that avoiding stress and concentrating on taking care of yourself (instead of work) will actually help you do that.
- Michael R. Bernstein
The idea is to get better ASAP so that if I get called in for an interview I won't bring a pox upon the office I visit. Or explode with snot all over the interviewer... Unless things have changed since the last time I looked for a job: maybe snot explosions are all the rage now.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
No, not so much with the hentai. But really, it involves snot? From nose? I'm aware of the tentacle thing which I'm sure involves some sort of viscous oozing, but is it actual snot?
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I have no idea, but, it seems the emanation point (sorry) for all kinds of weird stuff.

My new application: WHENDIDYOUJOINFRIENDFEED? Do you want to know when have you posted to FriendFeed for first time? I'm using FF for 397 days, what is yours? - http://whendidyoujoinfriendfeed.com/#
(if it crashes, just use F5) We can find approximately when did you start posting to FriendFeed for you. Just sign in this application using your FriendFeed account and learn how many days ago you've started to FF! Try it now.

- Burak Budak
@Ladybug Heather @Sahandram USE F5 Please. Everybody is trying to launch it and server is too busy.
- Alp
Mine says 15 days ago, which is NOT true. Weird.
- Niklas Pivic
MIne says 0 days. Which I know is far from the truth as well.
- Ruud van Wijngaarden
Guys we're looking for first entry you've posted manually from FF, not imported from twitter, last.fm etc. It works for many people. ::interesting:: @Ruud it must be a bug, I'm checking out.
- Alp
Okay. I wish it would show (or someone would develop an app that shows) when I actually joined the service. This should be called "When Did You First Post to FriendFeed", then, since that's what it shows. It doesn't show when you joined FriendFeed.
- Rochelle
It says I joined today. Which is completely wrong, even with your definition of the app's functionality. My first manual FF post was definitely not today.
- Mattie Kenny
My first post to FF definitely wasn't 2 days ago. Ah well.
- Martin Bryant
from iPhone
It says I joined today. Er, no, that's totally wrong. Not much good, I'm afraid.
- Neville Hobson
it also says i joined today. therefor: useless. plus, i agree with @rochelle, the date you first joined is not the first day you first posted.
- Ralph Reijs
Yes, I agree with you but friendfeed allows us to reach this data. I think it is still funny. Many people learned when they've first posted. http://friendfeed.com/whendid...
- Alp
"Currently, server is busy (HTTP 500) but if you try refreshing this page (F5), most probably we can find when you've joined to FriendFeed according to your first manual post to FriendFeed. "

I used GMail because the linked app was busted when I tried it.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Server is too busy please be patient or try later.
- Ahmet Alp Balkan
i think i know what is the cause of it stating i joined 0 days ago.. i never posted on FF, just aggregate data from other sites. Alp, i see your the developer.. could this be the cause?
- Ralph Reijs
October 1st, 2007. Do I win a prize?

I'm such a newbie. :) - I started posting to FriendFeed on March 3rd, 2009 (181 days ago)

April 15th 2008; 503 days ago. If I'd known my 500therversary was coming up, I would have celebrated!
- Andrew Terry
It did a good job on my account. My first post was on July 2nd of this year, but it says that it was on July 8, 2008 which is actually the day I joined. Not bad!
- Michael Fidler
Can it be a coincidence that I joined friendfeed on the same day as MF; July 8th, 2008? I guess it is a small world after all! I wonder if we have anything else in common.
- Michael Fidler
i was invited on october 2nd, 2007 ;) a lot has changed in the meanwhile.
- Mario
Remember when Robert Scoble brought all those people he unfollowed over to FF? I joined that very day. August 7, to be exact.
- Dennis Jernberg
oh, my first post: I started posting to FriendFeed on May 23rd, 2008 (465 days ago)
- Mario
I just realized that there's something wrong with the date it gave me. I joined twitter on July 8th, 2008, but i joined friendfeed months before I ever joined twitter. I would really love to find out exactly when it was. Does anyone have the wording of the conformation email sent out around this time? I searched for it once but I couldn't find it using "friendfeed", or "thank you for joining", etc.
- Michael Fidler
Micheal the only email form the service I have is "Friendfeed email address Verification"
- Jimminy Fuller
It works now, but has the wrong date.
- Kol Tregaskes
Somebody actually made it?! Yeah :) I started posting to FriendFeed on May 29th, 2008 (459 days ago). But that's a bit strange number.
- Sasha Kovaliov(.com)
I started posting to FriendFeed on May 30th, 2008 (459 days ago). My actual start date was 3/28/08, but I guess I didn't make native "Internal" posts for 2 months.
- Mitchell Tsai
Doesn't work for me, it's months out. Does it take into account entries posted with the bookmarklet?
- Kol Tregaskes
First comment would be nice to + first joined proper. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Kol, it counts bookmarklet etc. internal entries.
- Ahmet Alp Balkan
OK, then definitely not working for me. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
"Why It's A Must: The directorial debut of Barrymore is tackling a subject that's been ripe for the comedic treatment on the big screen for years. Page is looking for that second breakout role after "Juno" and with Wiig, Lewis, Eve and Harden along for the ride it looks the surprise comedy hit of the season."
- Russellreno

I wonder if Tina has a cameo. ;-) I think she could kick Juno's ass.
- Jason Huebel
Nope. The next time I'm in M-town it might be worth a visit.
- veo
I am having an incredibly intense donut craving. Any recommendation in Seattle for the perfect donut?
- veo
It's definitely worth the visit. The lady who runs it is insane. It's like the soup nazi from Seinfeld or that crazy guy at the sandwich place in downtown Seattle. She'll scream at you if you don't order what she wants you to order. My mom's friend went in there a few weeks ago, ordered a sandwich for lunch, and was told that she couldn't have it because it's too much work to make that sandwich.
- Rochelle
LOL at the crazy lady. Sad Panda for your mother.
- Derrick
hahaha, that's hilarious. The sandwich nazi at Bakeman's in Seattle isn't that scary at all. He asked me to hurry along once when I was dilly-dallying about what drink I wanted, but he was polite. I kind of want to be berated at a bakery though, sounds fun. Did your mom's friend order something else or leave?
- veo
She can butter my muffin any day! oh. I just gave myself the O_o.
- pea
When you're talkin' Nigella, you're talkin' sensual and sensuous ALL AT THE SAME TIME! (And unlike most conversations, both would be used correctly.)
- Mark "DerBingle" J
The DH says, she can come cook in our kitchen any day. ;D I'm totally down with that, believe me...
- Bette Cooper
This post is so old, it predates when one could upload images directly to FF, and now the image link is broken. :(
