Search engine market share: Google gains 5% share in a month?
"Baidu search engine numbers have been adjusted downward due to detection of automated traffic." Bing went from 3.17% to 3.52% (0.35% gain) and Google went from 78.45% to 83.33% (4.88% gain). Hmm. By the way, this is why I'd prefer to see estimates of search queries rather than percentages. - Matt Cutts from Bookmarklet
i've asked them to see if they can pull out the numbers.. they have given me great tech support for years, so if it's possible with the data.. we will get it. - Steve Plunkett
The StatCounter data is out now: . Bing gained 0.23% market share and Google gained 0.29% market share, according to StatCounter. - Matt Cutts
Not sure I understand. Is NetApps implying that a big chunk of Baidu's search traffic was automated = not real = fraudulent? - Chris Zaharias
Automated and not real: yes. That doesn't mean fraudulent though. It could have just been (say) scrapers or bots hitting Baidu. - Matt Cutts from iPhone
Perhaps the scraper/bot traffic is due to Baidu's MP3 file-sharing business? Also, I wonder why other measurement firms aren't showing this change? - Chris Zaharias
do these 'studies'/surveys have a margin of error? - Chris Heath
Chris, they tend not to have a margin of error until they do. :) A few months ago, Danny Sullivan uncovered a stat provider's error in a regexp and as a result, Yahoo gained a lot of market share. :) - Matt Cutts from iPhone
so they're not doing some sort of sample size? those are their raw numbers? i would figure that a stat like this would have a margin of error - Chris Heath
