Bryce, I was being sarcastic. It was a Google 502 error message page. Refreshed and it went away and resolved to the site. I'm tired of Google blaming the end user, and failing to accept full responsibility for the problems at Feedburner

There has been a hearty back and forth about this issue, and that’s good. It’s getting attention for photographers’ rights, and bottom line, that’s what we’re after. The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, with photographers and regular folks alike chiming in about their similar experiences and outrage. I've been limited to 2,000 for months now. Keep thinking it will increase when followers increase beyond my current 1,345, but after all this time I really don't care anymore. Did you do something wrong? Is this some type of twitter Karma? lol. Actually, I did have a question. I was on seesmic for the first time last night! With no followers I made my first video to basically anyone that wanted to see it. A very nice women replied to it and welcomed me. I noticed she had a question posted. Why do we need friendfeed anyway? I had to respond. That response immediately received 14 replies, and they were pissed off at YOU. Did something happen there yesterday?

It's because Twitter takes 400 requests to get your followers. Same for friends. :-)

Robert: 21563 friends takes a long time to find :). But it only took me 48 seconds to find all of your Twitter friends on FriendFeed. Maybe there was a blip with Twitter when you tried it?

I'm not a techy person at all, but I can say with confidence that this whole API thing is really ticking me off. What's the point of limiting tweets...we are on Twitter to chat. Just get that back-end stuff fixed already (like I said, I am sooo not a tech person). :)

The comments on that post pretty much said it all: a quick addition or two to the API calls and the load problem vanishes. Can't imagine why they're adamant they won't do that. Strange stance to take.

I haven't been too impressed with the tone I've seen taken by Twitter in many of the e-mails and threads. What this does is mean that every service that taps the API in this way will be restricted to working "sometimes" or for "some people". Socialtoo, which Jesse runs and I help out with, might be closed to big users who would use their unfair share of API accesses. Another alternative is for developers to reduce features or frequency.

I suspect the monetization pressure is starting to mount. Free flowing API helps growth and userbase, but after a point they'll likely sacrifice growth and userbase to monetize some of what they already have.

There are already ample opportunities to monetize by removing the cap for developers who pay. But as Jesse's post and comments show, they're uninterested in that, or in any other methods to start earning money.

I'm confused. What's wrong with using multiple IPs? If you do more than 5 requests a second, get another IP. Heck, you could even jerry-rig a server so you didn't even need to buy another one.

I've taken to manually pinging FeedBurner each time I post to my blog. On the other hand, for most services I have linked to FriendFeed, I have to tell it to update each service I use manually, since it seems to take forever (and under the CES traffic crunch, things are only worse).

It's not just Feedburner. If I want something to appear in my FriendFeed RIGHT NOW, I almost always have to do a manual refresh, and sometimes even that doesn't work. But an argument can be made that updates to FriendFeed aren't as important as, say, stock trades.

So let me ask this question - assuming that one uses FriendFeed for personal purposes, what is the MAXIMUM amount of time to elapse between the time an item is created on some service (Blogger, YouTube, whatever), and the time that item appears on FriendFeed? And, how was this maximum time derived?

Ontario? The maximum acceptable time? For Twitter, no delay. Blog posts... almost no delay. But I'd assume Flickr, Smugmug and other less-instant items could wait minutes. Disqus comments for instance are very fast now and don't need to get any quicker, in my opinion. The #1 issue I have with Smugmug right now is that it actually syncs "too fast", meaning the first rev of comments and likes tends to get wiped out when the set of photos is final. FriendFeed does a good job now, but the bar is very high.

There's part of me that wants everything to appear within 1 minute. But do I need it? I can argue that ANYTHING - blog post, tweet, Disqus comment, Flickr picture, YouTube video, last.fm song, whatever - can spark a conversation, so can one argue that some types of items are less critical?

I think it depends on the launch strategy, either to open it up and build community from the start (in which case you definitely would need one) or if you're going for the super secret beta aspect (in which case you would still need one but would probably call them something else).

Can someone provide a link to an explanation RE how "community management" is different than "customer service" if the latter is done properly? Or are we talking about the same thing? If so, then yes, every company--no matter the size--needs a community manager/customer service manager/customer advocate of some sort.

Marshall -- We thought it about for a while at Twine and definitely had the need in the beginning stages, but ultimately decided to hold off. Why? It's actually pretty amazing, but the community started self-regulating, in a very mature and consistent way that we were pleasantly surprised by. We still check in constantly and our team is obviously very active in Twine, but I am curious what other startups are doing. The community is running smoothly now, but we have to see what the future holds…

I think a startup should put a developer in the community as opposed to a "community manager". Even though the developer may not be as good of a communicator as a marketing guy, there is a different type of understanding of what people want.

from a strategy perspective (which is the hat I wear these days), startups are best served by having all of their key staff members engaging in various forms - blog, twitter, friendfeed etc. As a former Community Manager, I reall think that this role is much more effective with an organization that isn't as web 2.0 forward as a startup maybe...however, there are at least a handful of startups that I've assessed that could definitely benefit from having a CM in house.

It does depend on the business model. With my own company, we started off small but, one of the first things we did have was a Community Manager. It's proven to be a irreplaceable part of the company. Another thing that is stressed (because we're so small) is all the "key" people are also a part of the community. It's made things go a lot smoother since we are so community based.

I love that the article points out (by way of Peter Kim) that companies need to avoid creating yet another silo...the social media silo. Social media provides new tools, opportunities and even threats to the WHOLE business. Introducing a new way of thinking across the business will be more difficult than creating a new silo, but it's the right way to go.
