Hit some 502 server errors on Google Feedburner feeds. As Google says though: it must be the end users fault.
I think Dreamhost is having some downtime - Bryce Roney
Bryce, I was being sarcastic. It was a Google 502 error message page. Refreshed and it went away and resolved to the site. I'm tired of Google blaming the end user, and failing to accept full responsibility for the problems at Feedburner - Duncan Riley
Google says it's "a service provider throttling or disallowing traffic from Google" - http://adsenseforfeeds.blogspot.com/2009... - Bjorn Stromberg
Bjorn, that has got to be the worst explanation I've ever read. Given it's so widespread that they had to put a post up about it, are they really suggesting that thousands of service providers are delivering Google 502s? I feel a post coming on :-) - Duncan Riley

There has been a hearty back and forth about this issue, and that’s good. It’s getting attention for photographers’ rights, and bottom line, that’s what we’re after. The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, with photographers and regular folks alike chiming in about their similar experiences and outrage. But, of course, there are always those who will disagree with the mission and the method. - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet

The shirt, and MANY of their clothes are from a product manager at the office who was very generous. As for Sarah, she was rolling on the floor from the living room to our room and was 5 feet to the left, so Yolanda was mostly right. - Louis Gray

Remember - and I made a similar point on LinkedIn today - internal processes are important. If one's internal processes are not optimized, then the output will be deficient. I still can't follow anyone new on Twitter. @ev @biz @jesse -- even people I manually want to follow Twitter refuses to let me follow. Sigh.

you maxed out your friends? i saw earlier Facebook blocked some guy for having too many friends. how ironic. - Jason Salas from IM
Is your goal to follow the "entire" conversation? Would think you would like to parse per subject my friend. - michael sean wright
l0ckergn0me I like the Flip better than the Kodak, although the Kodak's microphone is better. Why? Because I bias small size as more important than features. (sorry to change the topic, but he's been bugging me about this stuff for a few weeks). Oh, and that should be "that's a sign from @god, dude. ;)" Heh. - Robert Scoble
Stop compromising quality sir. Shoot with the film aestheticism. Leo L told me audio should be priority. I disagree, visual should be the goal, settle down, show us what you are "feeling" rather than quick shots. - michael sean wright

I've been limited to 2,000 for months now. Keep thinking it will increase when followers increase beyond my current 1,345, but after all this time I really don't care anymore. Did you do something wrong? Is this some type of twitter Karma? lol. Actually, I did have a question. I was on seesmic for the first time last night! With no followers I made my first video to basically anyone that wanted to see it. A very nice women replied to it and welcomed me. I noticed she had a question posted. Why do we need friendfeed anyway? I had to respond. That response immediately received 14 replies, and they were pissed off at YOU. Did something happen there yesterday? - Michael Fidler

worked fine for me - but then I am using FF & linux :-) - Bankwatch
bummer is that the import tool ignores my imaginary friends that i created for the same people. now i have entries in both locations. [sigh] - MikeAmundsen

Robert: 21563 friends takes a long time to find :). But it only took me 48 seconds to find all of your Twitter friends on FriendFeed. Maybe there was a blip with Twitter when you tried it? - Benjamin Golub
I think before releasing a new feature, FF should ensure it is done fast on Scoble's account. "I wonder why it is taking a long time for me" is bad PR for FF, me thinks ;) - Lakshman Prasad

This has made me a little more cognizant of using FF for more than just a Twitter push. I'm trying to comment here more, and watch for comments on my other feeds. should I do FF-only messages though? I have only done that in rooms so far - Doug Haslam from twhirl
This is a nice tool and helped me find a few people on FF, but wouldn't it be better still if FF went a step further and made (or offered to make) imaginary friends for the Tweeple it didn't find in FF. That gets everybody in one place. - Robert Clockedile
I've tried it several times and it doesn't work for me. I wonder why. - Robert Scoble
you wonder why it won't work for you? Hmm... Maybe because your following/followed count is so high it can be described as "a metric ass-ton" :P ... No, it was a bit wonky for me too, seemed to take a quick moment to go through. - Lou

Twitter is limiting API access again, which will see many of the apps you like weakened or dead: http://blog.socialtoo.com/2009...
*cough* Friendfeed's fault? :) :) - Bwana ☠
I'm not a techy person at all, but I can say with confidence that this whole API thing is really ticking me off. What's the point of limiting tweets...we are on Twitter to chat. Just get that back-end stuff fixed already (like I said, I am sooo not a tech person). :) - Jennifer Windrum
The comments on that post pretty much said it all: a quick addition or two to the API calls and the load problem vanishes. Can't imagine why they're adamant they won't do that. Strange stance to take. - Mark H
I haven't been too impressed with the tone I've seen taken by Twitter in many of the e-mails and threads. What this does is mean that every service that taps the API in this way will be restricted to working "sometimes" or for "some people". Socialtoo, which Jesse runs and I help out with, might be closed to big users who would use their unfair share of API accesses. Another alternative is for developers to reduce features or frequency. - Louis Gray
Is it possible they've got nobody there who can form an SQL query more complicated than "select * from users where id = X"? That would explain a lot. - Mark H
ROFL Mark! - Jesse Stay
I suspect the monetization pressure is starting to mount. Free flowing API helps growth and userbase, but after a point they'll likely sacrifice growth and userbase to monetize some of what they already have. - mikepk
so will this affect FriendFeed? - Thomas Hawk
There are already ample opportunities to monetize by removing the cap for developers who pay. But as Jesse's post and comments show, they're uninterested in that, or in any other methods to start earning money. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Thomas, I can't speak for FriendFeed, but I believe they still are one of the XMPP partners and are outside of this issue. - Louis Gray
Why wouldn't Twitter just set fees on developers using high levels of the site's API? - Sonya Smith
Are they possibly just trying to stabilize what they have in place because they don't have the resources (financial or otherwise) to improve infrastructure? - Kevin Whalen from BuddyFeed
#failquest twitter is limiting APi access? Sigh. - Drew Lucas
@Kevin They could easily acquire the resources by working out deals both with high API users, and with the bodies that fund them. They aren't bothering to do that. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Works to the advantage of friendfeed and other such services. - Richard A.
Thanks, Marshall. - Louis Gray

Thanks Marshall - very well done post! - Jesse Stay
Socialtoo blog whitescreens on my iPhone. - mjc
good reporting Marshall. - Thomas Hawk
I'm confused. What's wrong with using multiple IPs? If you do more than 5 requests a second, get another IP. Heck, you could even jerry-rig a server so you didn't even need to buy another one. - Mark Trapp
Well, I have recently noticed that things on FriendFeed getting to twitter has been slower in the last few weeks or so. - Wizetux
if Twitter follows through on the API query limits. Will those apps written on their platform be grandfathered? or does the cap apply to all comers, current and those "on the come"...? - Gregg
I think they're shooting themselves in the foot here - Jaemi Kehoe
I think we should wait to see what Twitter is going to do here. API limits may mean they have somthing in the works. - Roberto Bonini
I find it interesting that previously Alex talked about how it is his job to enable opening up the system ( http://al3x.net/2009... -- "I open up as much of Twitter’s functionality as I can without (hopefully) making the system insecure"), and now twitter makes the system more closed by setting limits on the very tools/features that define the twitter experience. - Andy Bakun

"Over the next one thousand, four hundred and sixty one days, there will be scandals, both real and artificial. There will be surprises. There will be excitement and frustrations. There will be great speeches and boring ones. And if you think about it, theoretically, Obama and his team would have to royally screw things up to not have the American people say, in November 2012, that they will be better off than they are today, giving them a running start at reelection already. But anyone who thinks this is going to be a piece of cake is kidding themselves." - Louis Gray from Bookmarklet

I'm Getting So Tired Of The Non-Instant Web - http://www.louisgray.com/live...
I couldn't agree more. There's no excuse for it in 2009 to be brutally honest. So many services who tout web 2.0 really need to pick their game up. - Mo Kargas
i like the idea of "brutally fun"... as if to say being brutally honest is addictive in a good way. sounds a lot like a hockey game. - Courtney Engle
I've taken to manually pinging FeedBurner each time I post to my blog. On the other hand, for most services I have linked to FriendFeed, I have to tell it to update each service I use manually, since it seems to take forever (and under the CES traffic crunch, things are only worse). - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
I ping FeedBurner when I post as well, and then refresh the site here manually on FriendFeed to make sure it gets through. - Louis Gray
That Feedburner experience sounds woeful. Is Scoble's real-time web conference on? - Hutch Carpenter
Yes I'm all for "The Power of Now". Well actually, that was a book about something else. But still. - Paola Bonomo
It's not just Feedburner. If I want something to appear in my FriendFeed RIGHT NOW, I almost always have to do a manual refresh, and sometimes even that doesn't work. But an argument can be made that updates to FriendFeed aren't as important as, say, stock trades. - Ontario Emperor from fftogo
Louis, I know you're familiar with marketing requirements. So let me ask this question - assuming that one uses FriendFeed for personal purposes, what is the MAXIMUM amount of time to elapse between the time an item is created on some service (Blogger, YouTube, whatever), and the time that item appears on FriendFeed? And, how was this maximum time derived? - Ontario Emperor from fftogo
Ontario? The maximum acceptable time? For Twitter, no delay. Blog posts... almost no delay. But I'd assume Flickr, Smugmug and other less-instant items could wait minutes. Disqus comments for instance are very fast now and don't need to get any quicker, in my opinion. The #1 issue I have with Smugmug right now is that it actually syncs "too fast", meaning the first rev of comments and likes tends to get wiped out when the set of photos is final. FriendFeed does a good job now, but the bar is very high. - Louis Gray
There's part of me that wants everything to appear within 1 minute. But do I need it? I can argue that ANYTHING - blog post, tweet, Disqus comment, Flickr picture, YouTube video, last.fm song, whatever - can spark a conversation, so can one argue that some types of items are less critical? - Ontario Emperor from fftogo
The interest earned on "credit floats" are amazing not that anyone would do that or anything. In terms of the stock market, there are specific SEC guidelines dealing with a lot of the maneuverings that you mentioned. - Mathew A. Koeneker
Feedburner sucks. I've said it before - someone needs to come in and take back this market while feedburner is blowing it.. there's a huge market opportunity there. (sorry a tad off topic) - andy brudtkuhl
At this particular point in time, I'd just be happy if Twitter would get back to working properly and not dropping my tweets. Once yesterday and once today. Grrrrr. I'm not asking for instantaneous - just asking for it to actually happen at some point. - Renee Hendricks
The MacClusterF seems to have damaged Twitter. Of course, in reality, it's probably their PATHETIC security. - ‘-.-’ Tutivillus Grift

Thinking of writing a story about whether startups need community managers. Thoughts? Email them to marshall@readwriteweb.com to share them
depends on the business model of the startup wouldn't it marshall? - mike "glemak" dunn
If the platform has a social bent, maybe. - Chris Brogan
I think it depends on the launch strategy, either to open it up and build community from the start (in which case you definitely would need one) or if you're going for the super secret beta aspect (in which case you would still need one but would probably call them something else). - Matt Dickman from twhirl
Can someone provide a link to an explanation RE how "community management" is different than "customer service" if the latter is done properly? Or are we talking about the same thing? If so, then yes, every company--no matter the size--needs a community manager/customer service manager/customer advocate of some sort. - Ken Sheppardson
Marshall -- We thought it about for a while at Twine and definitely had the need in the beginning stages, but ultimately decided to hold off. Why? It's actually pretty amazing, but the community started self-regulating, in a very mature and consistent way that we were pleasantly surprised by. We still check in constantly and our team is obviously very active in Twine, but I am curious what other startups are doing. The community is running smoothly now, but we have to see what the future holds… - candice nobles
I think a startup should put a developer in the community as opposed to a "community manager". Even though the developer may not be as good of a communicator as a marketing guy, there is a different type of understanding of what people want. - Rob Diana
Awesome thoughts everybody - I just posted notes on "Do Startups Need Community Managers?"" at http://bit.ly/46i5im collecting responses to include in RWW post in AM - Marshall Kirkpatrick
from a strategy perspective (which is the hat I wear these days), startups are best served by having all of their key staff members engaging in various forms - blog, twitter, friendfeed etc. As a former Community Manager, I reall think that this role is much more effective with an organization that isn't as web 2.0 forward as a startup maybe...however, there are at least a handful of startups that I've assessed that could definitely benefit from having a CM in house. - Jennifer Van Grove from twhirl
It does depend on the business model. With my own company, we started off small but, one of the first things we did have was a Community Manager. It's proven to be a irreplaceable part of the company. Another thing that is stressed (because we're so small) is all the "key" people are also a part of the community. It's made things go a lot smoother since we are so community based. - Candace

Why Brands Need a New Kind of Leader - http://www.adweek.com/aw...
"Social-media experts are in high demand as companies attempt to figure out how to adapt how they talk to customers and even among themselves. Companies like Ford, Intel, Dell and Pepsi have concluded the best way to change is by bringing in a social-media czar to lead their strategy." - Brian Morrissey from Bookmarklet
I love that the article points out (by way of Peter Kim) that companies need to avoid creating yet another silo...the social media silo. Social media provides new tools, opportunities and even threats to the WHOLE business. Introducing a new way of thinking across the business will be more difficult than creating a new silo, but it's the right way to go. - Amy Worley
