Also ironic, the video touting Windows over Linux http://www.itsbetterwithwindows.com/ uses built in Final Cut pro effects/transitions. So It's Better with Windows, unless it is for them... Then it is better with a Mac? LOL.
Well that and IT'S A NETBOOK for goodness sake! :) If you cannot use Linux on a netbook, there are bigger issues with basic brain function at risk here. It's used for Firefox and wifi - all Windows is giving folks is malware headaches. But at least THAT is familiar. :)
- Matt Hartley
I noticed they were all using 7" eee pcs, obviously it was quiet an old video. I remember a demo I saw on an early 701 with touch screen, in the video the anti virus kicked in and the unit screeched to a halt, still if they are happy with windows home edition let the have it, but its not for me :)

"I agree with Fuzz2010 - used to live in Richmond and spend time in Berea. It's definitely "poorer" than where I live now, but it is hardly third world by any stretch - Fuzz is spot on 100%."

The myth that the war is to blame is not true - it will indeed crush us later on, just not yet. No, this current crisis is caused by lack of checks and balances in the *financial industry* fueled by greed. The only thing the Bush administration did is nothing at all to prevent it, not so much creating the cause. Both parties are totally guilty of creating the ecosystem where this crap...

- Matt Hartley
Hmm, I guess I don't completely disagree, and clearly the current situation is nuanced and textured and can't be brought down to one or two issues, but it does seem to me that the combination of the war and Bush's Ownership Society initiative (http://tr.im/yb) to encourage more home ownership are good places to look for consequences of the kind of poor governance, leadership and corruption that characterizes this administration.
- Chris Messina
Yeah, the war was priced in to the stock market long ago.
- Alex Scoble
Does anyone remember bush's proposal to invest social security in a total stock market fund? It would have been optional but would still lead to cries for bailouts as soon as the market dipped. Scary.
- Mark Collier
Actually, folks, this is fundamentally a result of systemically mispriced risk. Why was the risk in all of this mispriced? Because Congress compelled the financial industry to extend "ownership" to people who could not rightfully afford it. It really has very little to do with Bush - sorry. Once the incentive structure was put in place, the financial markets did what they always do - try to make a buck into ten bucks. But the very nature of the situation was wrong, and you're witnessing the aftermath.
- Forrest Cox
Why do I feel as if I've just been Punk'd? That can't seriously be a commercial right...right?
- Joe Pierce
That is just how I felt - are Microsoft's marketing people truly this incapable of getting anything right?
- Matt Hartley
It really looks that way. Even getting Seinfeld was a questionable choice, didn't his Am-Ex commercials a couple of years ago pretty much flop?
- Joe Pierce
I just realized I gave out the remaining biz cards at Gnomedex and have none for VWorlds2008 in LA. But seriously, *business cards* at a virtual world conference? I should telepathically BEAM that data to you. Can't we upgrade? I'll say this, next rev of cards will be products. :)
i normally use moo.com but not on this short notice...i should also ping the tokyo crew about their thoughts since the card thing is SO part of biz culture.
- Eric Rice
Someone mentioned awhile ago to hook up a Nintendo DS and pictochat your info to them :P You could do the same for a PSP (I think it was Alexander Williams who said it). I want that personally.
- Candace Holly
Honestly, I don't understand this card thing. I was beaming people with palm pilots 8 years ago. In fact, it was considered RUDE to have business cards when I went to infrastructure conferences.
- Christine Cavalier
@Christine, i work in telecommunications and i've run into situations where handing a biz card is a huge faux pas. beam it or forget it is what i've been told.
- Anika Malone
Of course, how do we know what can be beamed or not, what's compatible or not. I wouldn't even know how to transfer between a treo and iphone or blackberry and nokia... and i'm like from the FUTURE n shit. :)
- Eric Rice
so... years ago Palm had the biz card beaming feature. I remember loving it. Where did it go? How did it fall out?
- Michael Markman
from twhirl
its bluetooth, don't the smurfs in our phone just make it work. i used to have a PPC6700 and now i have an instinct. I've never had a problem beaming anyone anything, except when I was in vegas and my phone would not pick up or receive data from the iphone user standing next to me. that was the only time in the past 5 years that's happened..
- Anika Malone
i think the other point i'm making is that i can't even recall having run across the need to do this, much less, even know *how* to
- Eric Rice
I know this doesn't help you for next week, but if it is an important contact, in the future perhaps use a branded flash drive w/ your contact info and sample of work? There are a few sites like this out there: http://www.usb-flashdrive.com/us...
- tagami
tagami: actually i have a use for flash drives for another project ;) but yeah, great idea for some for biz card replacements
- Eric Rice
I'm at Dragon*Con and I've seen some great anime themed cards the last few days. I like business cards - I should make some :)
- Tom Novak
IMO Chris is pretty correct, 'coz he intended (afais) "Desktop" Linux. If 6 editions of Windows Vista are 5 too much...
- Yuvi
Color me stupid - it wasn't Chris. But, I agree with what the blogger concerned said.
- Yuvi
Some good points but rather limited thinking.
- Deepak Singh
When it comes to shareware apps today, I wonder if the place to be is not with Windows as the author says, but rather with the iPhone or OS X. The Windows market is so vast it's hard to get noticed, even with a great app. Now in terms of the OS, I think it still matters. However, I'd add that Linux developers need to make their case today why Linux on a _notebook_ is the thing to do....

I do believe there needs to be some change to adopt.. Normal users will never understand the "Free as in Speech, Free as in Beer" concept. We need to get rid of the terms open, closed, free, etc.. (whether you care about them or not) Also, not allowing closed source (i.e. Nvidia drivers, Flash, etc) items to be pre-installed is an obvious death wish. Wine should be installed, enabled, and ready to go by default. There are plenty of awesome apps on Linux. Just make them easier to find and install.
- Tim Hoeck
Ya lost me when you posted Ballmer spelling out his "thoughts". Gates, okay, but Ballmer - please... That said, as a full time Linux user, you are right in a number of areas. What is wild is that most of them are not that difficult to fix, either. And your point about open or closed source - spot-on. OS for the job getting done, not its license. I could care less how Linux is licensed, as long as I can maintain certain freedoms with it. Good write up. ;)
- Matt Hartley
I did not find this spine chilling at all. More left wing scare tactics. Truth is, Given the criteria laid out in this video, you should be no less scared of Obama as President. And, truth is, I'm not scared of either. Things are going to get worse, much worse, before they get better, and they aren't going to get better because of a U.S. President.

Bush quote: "the truth will say that this intelligence has been intelligent"
- Mohamed J
Damn McCain we lose Obama we lose! WTF? The world is ready for Armageddon one way or another! It is not just the president it is the people behind him! Look at Nanci Peloci, she acts like she is on drugs! And she is a democrat! <sad day for the whole world>
- Igor The Troll
Or maybe counter-revolution. Like "Down with Rooseveltian stuff! Back to Federalist Papers!"
- 9000
There is no doubt that McCain will use force. Why did that dude have to lead the American cities question with "Seattle"? Fuck.
- Ryan
I'm way more scared of Obama. We will look back at these past few years as the good old days, back when people had jobs. Ugh.
- Hal Rottenberg
from twhirl
Mo: I'm pretty sure Bush said "the truth will say that this intelligence is good intelligence". That said, McCain needs to be stopped and this foolish reign of crazy, self absorbed, war mongering dictators must end. I feel sure that McCain won't be voted into office.
- Brandon Titus
The thing that slows the ambitions of nations like Iran is the threat of US force. Any canidate that takes that threat off the table is destablizing the world.
- Robert Hafer
@Hal- you're seriously scared of Obama? C'mon. We're in debt because we cannot afford war. Debt is what impacts the economy. That's why people are shorting the dollar.
- Ryan
"He will make Cheney lok like Ghandi" - Pat Buchanan on John McCain. Damn, that is quite a statement.
- Darrell Bell
from twhirl
I always worry most about economic policies, an America with a strong economy can withstand alot of other problems. Any canidate that talks about raising taxes scares me.
- Robert Hafer
@Tad that's what many posters seem to want from McCain.
- Robert Hafer
I am a not US resident and McCain scares the crap out of me...
- Jan Cifra
Hafer Yeah I hear you. look what happened when Clinton raised taxes. Who wants to go back to the days of a booming economy, full employment, budget surpluses and raising wages. *shudder*
- Jeff Jones
Wow. That response got totally munged by Twirl. Let's try that again. What is the alternative? Oh, right. Borrow ourselves into oblivion. We're so awesome, we've figured out a way to tax our decendants to finance our wildly out of balance lifestyle. Whatever social programs Obama wants to implement are a drop in the bucket next to an un-necessary $1-5 Trillion with a T war with Iraq. At...

I consider myself fiscally conservative in my political views and in that regard usually side with the Republicans but I just haven't been able to do it for several years now. There's a point when one has to realize that the ramifications of a liberal fiscal policy really doesn't matter when we're at war with the whole world. I'd be damned if there's another military draft without justification, a la Vietnam, and our current diplomatic posture and saber rattling is not a good enough reason...
- grant fox
...I take recession over warmongering any day.
- grant fox
Jeff, the Clinton surplus never materialized, because the economy was predicted to continue growing at the pre-increase rate, which of course it didn't because of the tax increases. Clintons vaunted "full employment" was at 6% unemployment, the rate now is 5.7%, The booming economy was the result of Reagan's fiscal policies. Clinton was leaving office just as the damage he did to the economy was becoming obvious.
- Robert Hafer
iphonegirl, I would think that people on your side of the pond would remember Neville Chamberlain and what came of his efforts to avoid war at any cost.
- Robert Hafer
Bottom line on war is we need to participate with the world and not mandate. America needs to check its ego at the door and foster the relationships we have squandered.
- Andy Lewandowski
*yawn* I'm to old to be drafted...and War is going to happen no matter who is in office. Obama's the biggest suck up to the American people of them all. McCain's a close second. (Just look at the polls...Obama 48% McCain 44%)

Nice topic! I was happier before (greater degree of satisfaction: 16 - 21), but I still understand happiness constantly, everything just now seems heavier to take, even if I never seem angry or anything about those concepts. But pleasures in instants will keep the thingies going.

What a happy thread :-) While going through chemo a positive attitude helps. Another thing I do? Smile and laugh even when it doesn't seem I should. I've found it can help to take the edge off.
- Loren Heiny
totally happy. was talking to a @megvsmeg the other day about how i have a weird guilt complex about having a job I love that takes care of my emotional, intellectual, and creative needs. pritty lucky. pritty, pritty, lucky
- J450N
Yes, and I like the laughter suggestion, seriously. Smiling triggers a neurochemical change in the brain that creates happiness (maybe it's mirror neurons), so anything that can make you smile will improve your mood. http://tiny.pl/2848
- William Harryman
yes. Doesn't being unhappy make you ungrateful?
- Josh Haley
Yes I'm happy. My personal saying is that everything's going to be ok, maybe right now they're falling apart, but soon, soon they'll be better than ever. Sometimes things get so bad that you just have to laugh. :)

lots of contented folks on FriendFeed, looks like. no one has confessed to being a miserable wretch, or even a little blue... I have definitely been that wretch at several points in the past. as recently as the beginning of this year I was there: my parents got divorced, my aunt died, and I split up permanently with a boyfriend/friend of 4 years.

When UK manufacturer of "Ginger Nuts" biscuits (cookies)marketed in U.S. they had to change the name following complaints.

Yes @Jamie The Brussells Bureaucrats can't get to us over here! Pounds and ounces, feet and inches. Only thing is the American pint is SMALLER than the British one - only 16 fluid ounces compared to 20. This means the US gallon is only 3/4 of a UK one (if you remember gallons that is).

"I should also point out that I realize that some DSL connections do not need an extra app or a router. But it is becoming increasing rare in my experience."

"Speaking as the author, I can assure you I have been using Linux since early versions of RedHat, so I do have a fair idea what I am talking about. ;) Yes, there are many DSL instances where it is plug-n-play ready for all OS'. This said, there are plenty of threads in the Ubuntu forums that shoot down the idea that all DSL connections do not require something like pppoeconf in order to get themselves running. I have been researching Internet connectivity with desktop Linux for sometime now and can assure you that pppoeconf is still needed in plenty of instances."

I fail at unpacking. I've been here almost 3 years and still have a couple of boxes....Actually at this point I think I'll call them pre packed for the next move.

Part of Flock's weakness was FireFix 2. It was slow and crashed pretty often. 2.0 fixes these problems and more
- Grant
@Grant I don't know how yours is so fast...Mine is tres slow...
- Zee.
At least for OS X it is.. half of the services dont' even sync
- Mona Nomura
I have at various times, I used the new version for a couple of weeks before switching back to FF. It still feels more stable, but the hijacking feeds, social stuff doesn't do it for me. I get though why it may appeal to some people.
- Duncan Riley
I used to use it, then I ended up using Opera.
- Matt Hartley
maybe it is just fast in comparison to running IE7 on a 5 year old Dell with XP and 512 MB of RAM. Saving up for a MacBook:)
- Grant
Actually, I have Flock in my list of "apps I'll migrate to in the future". I don't see that happening in less than an year, tho... let the thing mature, I say.
- Marcos Marado
I use flock (new beta) at home...FF in the office . Never been slow for me...though some have issues
- Allison
I have Flock open on one monitor - from which I Plurk, Tweet and do various other social media stuff, and I have FF3 open on the other monitor which is where I do everything else. I have had no problems with Flock so far
- Nancy Williams
from twhirl
For the people using Flock with no issues... are you on PCs or Macs?
- Mona Nomura
Flock and FaceBook had sync'ing compatibility issues. Twitter would not load at all.... The only SNS service that worked smoothly was Flickr.. lol I'm on OS X v 10.5.3. (i still have yet to update)
- Mona Nomura
I do most of the time, on a Mac. I like it better than plain jane Firefox. My favorite features are integrated display of my friend's Facebook status and ability to bookmark direct to Ma.gnolia through the favorites button. Admittedly the usability and reliability of those features could use a lot of work, but it does save some time/effort. I don't use any of the other special features that often.
- Jon Price
Give me two good reasons to switch to Flock! :-)
- Theo
used flock on PC for a while, liked it but for intense use it is too cluttered and slow, tried the beta on my macbook.. not very stable and again.. too too too much for daily work + it didn't supported g/apps email, neither Twitts popups.. so.. turned back to FF3 + needed add ons
- Naor
Theo: 1. Integrates social networking, email, etc. 2. I can't think of a second. Good point. I still like it though
- Grant
Used it and Opera rather than FF2, but now I've switched to FF3
- Paul Henman
I primarily use Firefox, but I also use Seamonkey, Midori, and Konqueror to some extent. But never Flock.
- Jake (aka Jawee)
I'm using Flock 2 beta. Basically got hooked on Flock while FF3 was less stable. My only complaint is how long it takes to load, so I keep it on full time. Like that Flock 2 integrates FF3 extensions without having to "Flock-ize" it.
- Mike McCallister
I would use flock but Foxmarks doesn't work with it yet
- Jonathan Nguyen
I like the interface and the idea but some how it just doesn't seam nescisary

I use Flock regularly (on Beta 2 right now with FF3 framework)- works great.
