It's total crap compared to the books, but it's still decently watchable. :D Far more palatable to me than Twilight, that's for sure. (I watch the eps while running around on my hunter. :D)
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
I'll have to check out the books. Somehow I doubt the TV show will follow them completely.
- Matthew Horton
Oh it most definitely doesn't. The books are actually pretty decent. They have long been a favorite book series of mine, and yeah it's just brain candy teen fare, but it's a love story I can get behind. I do have to say, I kind of like what they've done with Damon in the TV series. But I'm still waiting to see if his dynamic with Elena changes at all because that's where the books were...

Boo. Last.fm had a bunch of triple and quadruple counts on Raveonettes songs imported from the iPod from yesterday, so I deleted the dupes, but somehow almost all of them got deleted. Now the count is WAY too low and there's no way to undelete, I don't think. :(
Liked for Jack Black - love Tenacious D!
- Bette Cooper
Kristen Chenoweth is good at both

Kol, are you specifically gunning for people who are actors primarily who do music on the side? Or are musicians who've gone into acting fair game?

Cybill Shepherd, a gorgeous actress, and a jazzwoman :)

Shirley Manson is a great singer and at least a servicable actress

Billy Bob Thornton. I've only heard one track by his band and it wasn't bad.
- Spidra Webster
Dwight Yoakam. I was just wondering the other day what happened to his acting career.
- Spidra Webster
James Marsters. I think his voice is reasonably good judging from the Buffy soundtrack (although some accuse him of being off-pitch). I don't know how I'd like his band, though.
- Spidra Webster
Mickey Dolenz. VERY underrated as a vocalist. Good as a comedic actor though I wonder how he'd do with drama.
- Spidra Webster
Kristen Chenoweth is good at both but musical theater actors shouldn't even count in this question because being a good singing actor is a requirement of musical theater.
- Spidra Webster
Hugh Laurie is a MASSIVELY talented musician and actor.
- Spidra Webster
His bandmates in Band From TV are variable in their talent as actors & musicians, but they are all actors who also make music.
- Spidra Webster
Okay, I know he's bad, but I've watched all of Steven Seagal's movies.
- Greg Guitarbuster
Gregg Henry is one of my favorite character actors and apparently he's a pretty good musician, too.
- Spidra Webster
John Lurie. And of course David Bowie who is great at anything:)
- Citronella
I suck at both acting and playing music. So there!
- Morgan Haley
Felicia Day, who is also an accomplished violinist and a pretty good singer.
- Spidra Webster
Madonna's acting worked well for Evita. I dont know about other movies.
- Bruce Lewis
Spidra, I disagree, musical theatre actors should count as quiet often they make the leap between broadway and the silver screen without flaw and stage and screen are very different types of acting. I will add to Kristin Chenoweth some of the greats: Bebe Neuwirth (people will know her from Frasier as Lilith), Bernadette Peters (she should need no introduction), Patti LuPone (the...

I know they're very different kinds of acting. But I thought the crux of Kol's question was people who are primarily actors who also do music (I fully admit I then listed a lot of musicians that went into acting). Musical theater actors FROM THE BEGINNING are people who do both music and acting. It's part of the job description. (This is not to say they're not talented...I'm just saying it's not as remarkable a mix in a musical theater actor as it is in your garden variety film/TV actor.)
- Spidra Webster
Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer. Dan Ackroyd.
- Spidra Webster
Spidra, I think the only difference is timing. Some start with one and add the other, some start with both. That said, you will notice I am treating musical theatre as a singing career and not listing anyone who hasn't also appeared on TV or a major motion picture that doesn't involve singing.

Christian Kane - The song he had on the Angel soundtrack was really good, and I love him as an actor.

Bruce already mentioned Madonna - I'm not a fan of her music, but there are obviously people who think she's good. She was a decent actress in Dick Tracy and some of the other films she was in.

Playing my warrior (Tippler). I have /never/ died so much at such a low level. Even as a mage I rarely die. Is this normal? Or am I finishing quests too soon and not gaining levels like I should? Maybe a gear issue?
Classes like Warriors are more dependent on gear and spec than DPS casters like Mages and Warlocks. I found I had to plan out, a few levels in advance, where I wanted to take my paladin and warrior alts, otherwise it'd be night and day when questing.
- Mark Trapp
I've thought about rolling a DK just so I could twink my warrior and any others to make things easier. May end up doing this since leveling went from super easy to super hard super quick.
- Matthew Horton
I died ALL. THE. TIME. levelling up my mage. But she was a fire mage, who have notoriously poor survival skills. Frost mages, on the other hand, are the total opposite, and can survive just about anything. I have no idea about any other classes...so I'm offering no useful information to you. Lol :)
- Miriella
Lol, I got my 80 mage, so I know what you mean. I decided to make me a DK (Wino) to help twink my toon(s). I won't take any time for me to hit 70+, then I can send money to whatever I decide will be my main.
- Matthew Horton
from iPhone
What spec are you focusing on? Go Prot for best survivability (and in this day and age, it's not a bad levelling spec). I levelled purely as Fury so I died tons, but I loved playing Fury so it evened out. Heirloom items can help too.
- Arlan Koizumi
Considering reactivating my account, but I don't know where my old guild is at, and I don't think I can afford to fork over an additional $15 to transfer to silvermoon. :/
Create a DK or roll a new toon! If you like the server/guild enough maybe you'll feel the $15 is worth it. Most of us are just now getting to 80 and starting heroics, with others not far behind.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Same boat as you. So I'm playing a warrior for the first time on Silvermoon. Made the guy last night. :-)

You quit what? If you were a fish that would be a suicidal action. A beer every now and then doesn't hurt.
- Jimminy
@Matthew, recently. I'm finding that I get a lot more programming done in the evenings if I stay away from beer. :-D Also doing it for health reasons. Getting in shape and all that.
- Jason Huebel
@Jimminy, I'll have a drink on special occasions, mind you. But other than I'm avoiding the stuff.
- Jason Huebel
I have also greatly curbed my alcohol intake. It was taking longer for me to recover. :(

Yeah, that's my thing. I'm not in my 20's anymore, so if I drink one evening, I'm pretty much worthless for the next 24 hours. More worthless, I guess. ;-)

Cool, it runs in OS X, too, apparently. I'm going to have to check it out.
- Victor Ganata
Nifty, but not useful until you're level 80.
- Internet's Tad
I agree with Tad, but I did use this all the time with my mage. Sometimes you gotta kinda tweak the filters so you only end up with legit gems and whatnot. Amazing app, though. Thumbs up. :-)
- Matthew Horton
Yes - lots of people in my guild use it faithfully.
- Miriella
I take that back. Apparently, it WOULD work in OS X if Mono worked. *sigh*
- Victor Ganata
Really need to emphasize what Tad said, it's really only going to do you any good at 80. If you aren't a part of a raiding guild it may depress you with how much good gear you won't have access to. Filters are your friend.
- Berial
Ack! Was going through my email and noticed you replying. I don't get on here much. May end up starting a character on ya'lls server since I haven't chosen a main server yet.
- Matthew Horton
Please do! The more the merrier. A bunch of us are just reaching level 80 and are starting on heroics, but there are plenty of members still leveling up their mains (and alts, of course.) Send a tell to Haggi, Graive, Unruin, or Ngumiki for a guild invite, or just post in the room and one of us will ginvite ya. :D
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)

HortonThought the movie was really good. I love movies like this, so I felt it did it's job. I loved the ending of this released because it showed how everything could be "normalized" and everything swept under the carpet. I think that's where the psychological part comes in.
- Matthew Horton
Was I scared out of my wits? Definitely ... no. Not at all. There were only a few parts of "action" that could be classified as scary. The rest? "Character development" and "story buildup". You could literally skip (most of) the first hour of the movie and not miss a beat at all. Just watch the beginning, and the last 20-30 minutes.
- Matthew Horton
Did I enjoy the movie? Of course. I loved it. Probably one of my favorite horror flicks in a quite a while. :-)
- Matthew Horton
UPDATE: Ok, maybe the movie had an effect on me. Kinda like eating spicy Asian food. It's definitely not like Mexican or Cajun spicy food. It takes it a minute before it hits, then kinda stays with you for a while.

WOW. The Defying Gravity episode that airs tonight is going to blow the doors off any Sci Fi series that's been on broadcast television in years. The implications of the big reveal at the beginning of the episode are HUGE. I'm thoroughly hooked now. This show is NOT Grey's Anatomy in space.
Hmmm, maybe it doesn't air tonight. The Emmy's are on, so ABC is airing King Kong instead. That sucks. Guess everyone will have to wait until next week. HUGE, I tell you.
- Jason Huebel
from IM
Yeah, I'm worried about it too. On one hand, it's great that a show like this is on network TV. On the other hand, it could mean an early demise to the show, since network TV tends to be pretty generic. My only hope is that it catches on like Lost or Heroes.
- Jason Huebel
Well, hell. I just read the article you linked to. :-/ Maybe Canadian TV will keep it going...
- Jason Huebel
I started with XMBC and thought I loved it but there were quite a few quirks that I really was getting tired of. Most of those quirks seem to go away with Boxee. Also, the scripts/apps in Boxee actually work! I have had much trouble with the apps and scripts in XBMC. One thing I wish Boxee did that XBMC does is allow settings on how it updates the library. Boxee seems to think you shouldn't have anything to do with that process. plus for Boxee is the social element, which is basically optional.
- Josh Haley
hmmm I have an old out of date version of xbmc on my xbox, I might have to look into Boxee
- MikeDeal / ZoneDancer
Well, if I had to choose, I'd probably have to come clean and admit that I have no idea what either of these things are, and therefore no idea which would be better for you. Using 3 year old child logic, the choice is simple - Boxee. It's really fun and easy to say. So go with the Boxee. Yay! Boxee! Hooray Boxee! Hooray Beer!
- Morgan Haley
You will please to excuse my brother. I have not had a chance to show him the new htpc yet.
- Josh Haley
And please excuse MY brother for assuming that I know what htpc is. My techie knowledge is actually quite minimal. Did you guys know that they keep updating things like programs and devices? I have stuff that I still need to learn how to use, and it's considered obsolete already. But I'll try to catch up with the masses eventually. This weekend I'm going to set up my new TRS-80 and try to write a chess game program. The maybe play some PONG. Yeah baby. R2-D2 ain't got nothing on me!
- Morgan Haley
OK, start over... Anyone want to weigh in on this?
- Josh Haley
I like Boxee because it seems to be gaining support from the industry and has some money behind it, unlike XBMC which is a "hacker project" these days.
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
I didn't realize it was actually funded. That does help a bit, huh.
- Josh Haley
Honestly, I wasn't aware of XBMC until after I used Boxee. On my end, the social aspect keeps it ahead.
- Christopher Harley
I prefer Boxee too. I gave XBMC a try for a few hours but didn't enjoy the interface very much. I think Boxee does the right things most of the time.
- Juan Pablo González
i gave xbmc more than just a few hours. I used it even with the fancy Aeon interface for months and still, Boxee can do more. Don't get me wrong, the Aeon xbmc is quite amazing in how it looks butbin the end, functionality is the main thing for me. I don't think Boxee is especially "pretty" but it does flow rather well. Using on windows 7, btw.
- Josh Haley
from iPhone
Been using XBMC for years (both on Xbox and PC). Haven't used Boxee because wasn't available for Windows until recently. Just signed up and plan on trying it out though.
- Matt
I'm curious (and maybe I should go and try Boxee finally), but what is great about it, besides social features? I don't really care about social features for my media... I agree with Josh, I wish the scripts for XBMC were better organized and maintained. As for it being a "hacker" project, maybe so, but it is also one of the most well-organized open source projects out there.
- Tim Hoeck
Tim, forget about the social side, as it is not intrusive at all. Try it for the excellent scripting organization and usability. They almost all work, which is the opposite of what I am used to on xbmc and manual installs, etc. It's definitely worth a shot. You just have to give it time to create the library, maybe overnight, once you set up your media folders. I wish it showed a status on that but it does indeed do well with scraping, art, info, etc. let me know if you like it Tim.
- Josh Haley
Boxee. There's only 1 reason behind this decision, even though I haven't used it: HD video. The only reason why I say this is because I use XBMC on my Xbox, and it can't handle HD video at all.
- Matthew Horton
Right there with you Matt. I retired my Xbox running XBMC when I got my HDTV. It just couldn't handle the video.
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
I like them both from a concept perspective but neither of them are exactly what I want. Maybe I'm old school but I like the interface design of a TiVo menu or even Miro. I want the ability to know about every online video service but my main focus should be shows that I know I enjoy and to know that new episodes are there. I also prefer whenever possible to pre-download those flags series to prevent network congestion while viewing.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
I use both. Xbmc on my xbox for one room and Boxee on a computer in another room. I prefer boxee for streaming/browsing online content, but use miro to pre-download content that I always watch. Then I stream the downloaded shows to the other room w/xmbc.
- Chris Goulart
media library and podcast RSS playback are important features, which work pretty well in boxee

If I don't recognize any of the constellations, then I guess I just sit there and wait for the aliens to come back and pick me up...

Ha! Great post! I would go back inside the party, of course! Interesting the things you can learn about folks. Sounds like Eric is living down in the Keys. :-0
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Which shows, and in what context? (People saying hello, screaming while their best friend has a psychic meltdown, etc.)
- Jennifer Dittrich
Crap...I'll have to pay more attention. I've heard all throughout Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Naruto Shippunden. Definitely not referring to a proper noun.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Well, not definitely, but I seriously doubt it. I've also heard it in multiple levels of excitement, so I don't think it's something like "Hell Yeah!" or anything.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
To be fair, I don't speak real Japanese, but can decipher some anime pretty well. I'll give Naruto a listen as I'm catching up on the last few episodes.
- Jennifer Dittrich
I also don't speak Japanese, but I'll give it a listen, too.
- lris
It's just frustrating me because most of it is complete blah blah blah to me, but I keep catching that single utterance...LOL
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
It's funny listening to this for me because I grew up with Japanese all around me, so it sounds really really familiar... but I have no clue what they're saying 99% of the time. :-)
- lris
Naruto says "We'll make the first move!" and the last thing out of his mouth sounds like tih-bye-yo (accent on the "yo")
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
What he's saying is dattebayo. Here's a couple links talking about it.
- Matthew Horton
Yah, I think it is "dattebayo". I just wonder why I've heard it in Fullmetal Alchemist just about as much. I'm only on ep5 of Naruto, but I watched an assload of FMA and heard it repeatedly from the pipsqueak himself
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Hah! I was just going to come back and say it sounds like a verb ending to me, but not like any verb ending I'm familiar with. Now I know why. Thanks Matthew. :-)
- lris
That makes a ton of sense -- good catch, Matthew!
- Jennifer Dittrich
Np, me and my brother have been watching fan subbed Naruto for years and went through this before. :-P
- Matthew Horton
Apparently the northern country dialect uses the "beh" or "bah" sound at the ends of verbs quite frequently, and often in place of the normal verb endings, so when I read "Dattebayo" to her she immediately said "Oh, he's from the north!" That's also why it comes with the connotation of being uncultured. And that's also why you may here similar things in other shows. Anyone who's supposed to be either from the north or be farmer-ish or uncouth or just "cute" (my mom's word) might use that dialect.

"Batman: Arkham Asylum has picked up a good deal of buzz, and not just from our little corner of the internet. While the game is scoring well among game critics, it's also receiving favorable reviews from other sources like the Associated Press. This positivity has led to it officially receiving a Guinness World Record for "Most Critically Acclaimed Superhero Game Ever." The press release claims it received the highest average review score to date (91.67) on a global scale. Gaz Deaves from Guinness World Records called it a "fantastic new game" and says they believe "it has a well deserved place in the Guinness World Records Book.""

Today is finally my birthday. Only one more year until I'm 30 years old. Today I plan on doing only two things: drinking, playing Batman: Arkham Asylum.
Wow, maybe I should give it another read. I *love* the french lieutenant's woman

Liked FLW too. In The Magus, Fowles overdid the twists, but it's still a rocking read.

I'm eagerly awaiting "Merde Happens" and "A Walk In the Woods" humor-reading FTW - on hold at library

This is exactly how I read. If I don't finish it all in one session or flip the "obsession switch" till it's done, chances are I will never finish it.

Oh just got sucked into a new one- Desperate Romantics.

In the days between graduation and my first job, I read a book each day.

I had a summer during college when I postponed getting a job to the last possible moment and went outside with a beer and read a book each day. I had just decided to be an English major and had a huge reading list. Good times.
- anna sauce
Only done this once before. It was Ender's Game on a road trip. Would like to read more so I could get back to being able to read a book cover to cover in a session.
- Matthew Horton
That's a good book- I reread it the other day before sending it off to a niece.

I have a built-in stalling mechanism because, if I don't stall, I will read through most books in a matter of hours.
