BBC News - Review: The final episode of Lost
BBC News - Review: The final episode of Lost
"Honestly, the show ended the only way it could have possibly ended. It was emotionally satisfying while some of the questions were answered and yet others will remain a mystery. All in all, the show was wrapped up rather nicely with a positive affirming kind of message." - RAPatton from Bookmarklet
"Instead, we learned that rather than being some some kind of alternate-timeline, the flashes sideways were glimpes of a kind of limbo between life and death. In their deaths - some on the island, some much, much later - they were all pulled together to move on to the afterlife. The people that meant most to them during their lives would be there with them as they moved on to the next... more... - RAPatton
"There were some genuinely moving touches, Ben remained outside the gathering, not quite ready to leave his own personal purgatory and forgive himself for his sins. Yet Locke did offer him gratefully accepted forgiveness and Hurley, who invited Ben into the gathering said he was a "good number two", with Ben telling Hurley he was a "great number one". We were left to assume that the two men acted as protectors of the island for some time." - RAPatton
"It ended as it had begun with Jack lying in the same bamboo forest in which we first met him in episode one. Back then Jack opened his eyes for the first time on the island, this time around he closed them for the last." - RAPatton
But what about all the other characters that weren't in the church? Were they just not important enough to those people's lives? - James Ferguson
Yes, for this group of people this is what mattered, which was tipped off a bit in the discussion Desmond had with Farady's mom. They may not have even been "real," but constructs of the Losties own private purgatory. - RAPatton
pretty much james. or left in purgatory, like Michael. - Carlos Ayala
one thing i didnt consider was the Hurley/Ben/Protect the Island story and its timeframe afterwards. I think that the article nailed it. - Carlos Ayala
Yeah, that was important as part of the idea that the purgatory isn't based on time and that flash sideways purgatory existing in synch with reality was an illusion. Ben, Hugo and the guys on the plane all died much later than Jack and Locke died much earlier. As an afterlife, it was full of love, which I think was part of the point. It was very much a romantic finale and the final scene was filled with light. The island itself seemed like Pandora's box metaphor, but instead of Hope remaining it was love - RAPatton
in the office this is what we used as a guideline for the show: http://2012forum.com/forum... read Maranatha's posts. This is the most intelligent breakdown and explanation for the show that I've seen on the net. Enjoy. - Carlos Ayala

"Its taken 36 years of careful aging and rest to create a bottle of Glenlivet's Cellar Collection 1973 ($1,250). Three of the best casks were chosen by the recently appointed Master Distiller, Alan Winchester, of which the 1973 is his first release for Glenlivet. Looking at buying a car seat which can last my baby from birth until 30kg (~66 pounds), any recommendations? E.g. Britax Marathon, Britax Boulevard? Please advice
Anyone? - Bee
I love the Britax. The only diff between the Marathon and Boulevard is that the Boulevard has side impact protection. BUT, remember that car seats have expiration dates and I think Britaxes expire after 5 years. I'd suggest getting a bucket car seat first (those things are great) and then getting a Britax when it's outgrown; that way the child can hopefully stay in it longer. - Lis
+1 for the Britax Boulevard, as long as you have a big enough car. Those seats are *huge*, but they feel like overkill at <12mos or so. Go rear facing with any seat for as long as you (and your kid) can tolerate it, as it's safer. - Steve and 3 other people
I have the Britax Boulevard CS, but it's not installed yet! We have been using an infant car seat, and will continue to until 22lbs. If you can afford it, really think about getting both. I never realized how great the infant ones are (Graco). Penny can be asleep in the car and I just unsnap the carseat from the base and bring her inside. It's one of the items on my baby must have list. - Georgia
Oh, and the Britax Boulevard CS is very nice. Very soft, seems like it will be comfy, and I like how Penny can use the side impact things as a pillow. - Georgia
We have a Britax Boulevard as well. Expensive but very nice. For the first year or so we used one of those rear-facing seats that doubled as the seat for the stroller. That worked quite well. - ronin
Anyone having Britax Marathon or Evenflo Symphony Sure-Latch All-In-One? - Bee
Never had an Evenflo symphony, but I have had several other Evenflo carseats and I really liked the quality and value. - Laura Norvig
The little boy I took care of for two years had a Marathon and I LOVED IT. Easiest to install both with latch or with seatbelt, straps never twisted and it'll last him for a long time. Bee - All-In-Ones are generally not recommended because of the expiration date and the fact that the kid generally outgrows the harness height before they're ready for a booster. Another good one is the Evenflo Triumph Advance - the NEW model. It holds up to 55 lbs and has a high harness height. - Lis
What about Britax Decathlon? - Bee

Installing Windows 7 on a new system with a 500GB HD. Should I have one big partition or one for OS and other for programs?
windows7[1].jpg
bump - BRҰANSAҰS
Ok looks like the best advice is to have a partition for the OS and one for data but whats the best size for the windows partition? Another question I have is how do I move the Users, Program Files, and programData folders to the 2nd partition? - BRҰANSAҰS
I tried following the instructions on this site http://tuts4tech.net/2009... I then rebooted only to get an error that the user data was no longer there. - BRҰANSAҰS
Those are interesting instructions and certainly better than the way I used to do it: create and log in to your account; create a dummy administrator account; log out and log into that administrator account; move your account files, modify the registry to point to the new locations; log out and log in to your account; delete the dummy administrator account. It was a pain but it worked. - Akiva
Akiva when I changed the registry to "D:\Program Files" I would reboot and it reset itself to "X:\Program Files" have you seen that before? - BRҰANSAҰS
Not really. User data is stored in the Users folder on the system drive, so it's much easier to use a single huge partition. The whole point of separate system drive is to do clean reinstall of Windows on a formatted drive without losing the data. But W7 doesn't require reinstalling every year, as XP did :) - Kirill Petrovsky
Kirill, it's not just about that: it's just good practice. UNIX systems have recommended keeping the users directory on a second drive (or partition) since the dawn of time. - Akiva
Bryan, I've never seen that happen. Honestly, though, I eventually gave up doing what you're trying to do. Some poorly-written installers (Steam, for example) don't use the proper hook to detect free space on the target directory and instead return the free space of your system drive which can cause it to refuse the installation. I've also encountered a few programs that mysteriously... more... - Akiva
Akiva I might just leave Users on the OS partition and try moving the Program Files. I've never tried this before but I thought it would be neat if it works. - BRҰANSAҰS
Does anyone know a good FREE tool for changing partition sizes? - BRҰANSAҰS
I would recommend leaving Program Files where it is, too, and just having another on your second partition. - Akiva
2nd Akiva. Moving your Program Files won't really help. Should you need to reload your system you will still need to reinstall all of your programs either way so there isn't much advantage. I used to keep my profile stored on another drive, but now that I'm backing up constantly, I don't see the need to do so any longer. - Matt Hilton
Bryan try http://gparted.sourceforge.net/. Bootable Linux CD that will allow you to manipulate partitions. - Matt Hilton
Thanks Akiva and Matt. I'll keep it where it is. I only made the OS drive 50GB and just worried about filling it up too fast with programs. Do you guys just manually tell windows to install programs on the second partition? - BRҰANSAҰS
Yep. You can usually choose the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' Install options and then point it where you want the install to go. - Akiva
I actually don't tell it to install my programs to another partition, but you should be able to as Akiva described to change the installation drive. - Matt Hilton
Installing "programs" on the other partition never works out for the main purpose of doing it: easing reinstalls and upgrades without having to reinstall all the applications. Things like the registry are still stored on the "OS" partition. Putting all your "data" on the other partition seems to work okay, but you risk having to mess with NTFS permissions on a reinstall. Admittedly, I... more... - Andy Bakun
One big partition has always worked best for me. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
I prefer one big partition to a bunch of little ones. It's much easier to find what you are looking for. I don't see much benefit to segregating the OS. If you are worried about backup and restore of your OS , two suggestions: Make sure system restore is on, and do a full backup image of your HD onto an external drive using Acronos True image or Norton Ghost or any number of other drive imaging programs. This can be set to run automatically and do daily incremental and weekly or monthly full backups. - Jeff P. Henderson
Thanks for the advice Jeff. I might do that the next time I install windows. I already installed windows on the separate partitions. - BRҰANSAҰS from email
Although this is not nearly as compelling a reason as it used to be, we used to make small partitions because if one partition failed, it didn't take the whole OS with it. - Akiva from BuddyFeed
I read a bit fast, but anything is in the paths. Try %appdata% and you get to your X:\users\you\AppData\Roaming just change them in the command line and you can set any folder you want. I was doing this when merging XP accounts mashed together to keep cdkeys, serial numbers, application data... just set them with "set %appdata%=specialpath" or Windows+Pause, and find Environment Variables if you want to go custom on them. - Zu from AOD
From somewhere, I quote for reference: "I changed User variabes - TMP, TEMP, and added two System variables USERPROFILE and APPDATA, all pointing to respective (new) folders, all nicely structured like before reboot (just copied, so all settings should remain the same)." It's actually the case, USERPROFILE is the x:\users\NAME path, and it should move everything there. One interesting... more... - Zu from AOD
And for the record, got Windows 7 since January '09 -- Windows folder 20.5GB -- with a pagefile everything should fit inside 50GB if you separate apps. And as for changing installation destinations, instead of doing it each time, just change the Program Files default path, much easier to cope with in the long run. - Zu from AOD

My experiment with being legit and not bittorrenting shows is going well, but I'm missing out on some shows I used to watch like Venture Bros, Chelsey Lately, and The Soup. Cartoon Network and E! really need to get with the program. I'm probably missing some other shows I used to watch too, but obviously not important enough to remember
I actually feel fine grabbing torrents of shows that I technically paid for but somehow missed. Like if I pay for HBO but missed something, I don't feel bad for grabbing it from a torrent. - Akiva
Well, that is part of the problem. I decided not to get a cable/whatever carrier. Comcast isn't in this building and the alternate cable company is shit (used to be Millenium until they were bought out by a company that is now filing for bankruptcy if I heard correctly) and I don't have a way to use any dish technology from my location. I don't mind commercials, and I would even pay for some services like Hulu if I could remove the commercials or see less of them. - Kyle Prime
Oh, and I really don't care that people bittorrent and whatnot, I am just seeing if it is possible to keep up with my shows legally. - Kyle Prime

Alex, I don't hate the teachers, that's a job I couldn't handle, and I respect them because I've had to do it for just a few hours and it's tough. I hate the system, though. - Jimminy, CoG of FF
Generalizations about teachers to justify hating on unions does not compute. Have a little respect for people and their hard work. Also, hating on teachers like they are the guy behind the customer service counter where your trying to get your money back on a refund is a non equation. In fact, general hating because of your "I'm the customer so I'm right" attitude can, you know, #suckit.
