An acquaintance gave my dad 8 big boxes of baseball cards today. It sounds like some of it might be valuable (he thinks he has Nolan Ryan's rookie card?). What would be the best way to get these valued?
Hopefully not having someone from Craiglist come over and dig through them one by one... Maybe we could get a book and figure out which ones might have value?
- Rochelle
I think TopDeck had a catalouge a few years back. Not sure though... I use to have heaps of cards of all different sports. I would sort into team piles then hit eBay or card collecting trading sites.
- Johnny Worthington

He says there's also football and military cards.
- Rochelle
Send me the boxes, and I'll err... tell you later
- Mo Kargas
Well, back in the day (not sooo long ago) we used Beckett's Price Guides to gauge the price of each card and sets. You could also go to a hobby shop and ask how they get the values.

In order: Calisto, Europa, Jupiter, Io, Ganymede and to the southeast IOT Cap - HIP105515. Very nice. I've been trying to just get Jupiter and the moon these past few weeks.
- Anika
Sweet! It looks really clear. What did you set the white balance at? I know this is converted black and white and all, just wondering what kind of color info the lens/sensor were able to register for Jupiter.
- Adrian
@Anika they should be in your southern sky for most of your night and a wide angle will get them both together in the frame. the only problem is capturing any detail in both at the same time is virtually impossible.
- Carlos Ayala
If I didn't live on the other side of the continent (and had half the money) I'd go in halves on a GEM. Keeping the camera on Jupiter at that kind of magnification with a crappy tripod is a bear.
- Adrian
Oh, I can see them randomly. That's not the problem. It's actually shooting them where they're not blogs of white. I was going to do what you did and stitch together two photos, but the moon pics I've taken have been unusuable.
- Anika
@Adrian WB is almost always on Auto for these shots. If i am doing long exposures of starscapes in polluted skies i may do Tungsten. and I never convert to B&W. The shot of Jupiter is straight on shot @ 0.8 Seconds F8.0 ISO 1600. The Moon was shot @ 1/30 ISO 100. Both @ 560mm on a tripod.
- Carlos Ayala
@Anika you have to keep in mind that what you see of the Moon is sunlight. Always shoot it at ISO100, as though you were shooting in daylight. The actual speed will vary between 1/30 - 1/200, as an example. The shutter speed is dependent on position in the sky and type of moon, for the most part.
- Carlos Ayala
@Anika to stitch them, all i did was open both of them in photoshop and place them side by side in a new file. Since i wanted an accurate representation of position in the sky i moved the Moon to where it is in relation to Jupiter. This created a gap. The gap was easily fixed by making the background black. So, 3 layers: black background, the Moon and Jupiter and its neighbors.
- Carlos Ayala
So I shouldn't be getting color data on Jupiter at this magnification? I'm probably seeing chromatic aberration from the lens. You saw my photos... the colors on Jupiter and it's glow would switch up depending on how I had the white balance set. Strange, I guess I should look this up.
- Adrian
the only way to get any color data at this this magnification is if you track it using a GEM while taking many many many exposures at different lengths and later stacking the frames. If i had to guess, what you (and I) are picking up is actually reflected sunlight.
- Carlos Ayala
Crazy! The rovers on Mars shoot like that too. They have filters for the various color wavelengths and they piece the color photos together from these. I want a mount... and filters. :D
- Adrian
Oh it's not just color wavelengths they go for it's chemical wavelengths. They can identify chemistry on visible objects with the technique.
- Adrian
as for the canon's you can either purchase a modified camera for astrophotography, have your current canon permanently modified, add a filter above the sensor yourself or just wing it like i do. these filters cut out the wavelengths that produce the chromatic aberrations you mentioned and high pressure sodium and mercury light pollution. a GEM and a 800mm telescope with t-adapter is on my Christmas list for sure.
- Carlos Ayala
Dude, I have an Oly OM-1MD! In the 70's it was *the* astro-photography camera. ;) It was one of the main reasons I got it. It has mirror lock-up for vibration-free images. Since I don't have a long lens for it, I'm thinking I should just get a telescope with a mount, and an adapter for the camera. But for now it's just a dream.
- Adrian
haha yeah man i know the camera, i forgot you had that beast. awesome. unfortunately we are really limited as to what we can realistically photograph without a GEM. we are basically limited to the Moon. all deep sky objects require a GEM at the very least and a decent (fast) lens or telescope. look at this way my 560mm shot is effectively 896mm on my crop (if i have the math right) and thats the best i can do with what i have.

"Terrorism is rare, far rarer than many people think. It's rare because very few people want to commit acts of terrorism, and executing a terrorist plot is much harder than television makes it appear. The best defenses against terrorism are largely invisible: investigation, intelligence, and emergency response. But even these are less effective at keeping us safe than our social and political policies, both at home and abroad. However, our elected leaders don't think this way: they are far more likely to implement security theater against movie-plot threats... Our penchant for movie plots blinds us to the broader threats. And security theater consumes resources that could better be spent elsewhere."

Those who seem bored are eliminated from further consideration, he says, along with any who might talk too much during a close game "because they're from up North or something." As the all-important Alabama game approaches, Mr. Alsobrook says he's narrowed his list of potential dates to four. Ewan McAskill of the Guardian wrote, Although there is still some confusion about which shots brought down the alleged gunman, officials have attributed the bullets that brought him down to Munley. The commander of the base, Lieutenant-General Bob Cone, said of Munley: "It was an amazing and an aggressive performance by this police officer."
- Michelle Martinez
Dang. I didn't know that. And it is still Munley getting her picture displayed. Have we even seen a pic of Sgt. Todd yet? Thanks for pointing this out, Michelle.
- Jim Hearts FF
I had no idea, either, Jim. Kind of scary how manipulative the news can be. I haven't seen a pic of him, but they appeared together on Oprah and the Today Show.
- Michelle Martinez
I just watched the clip. It's clear from the interview that they both had a hand in stopping him and it seems that it was Sgt. Todd who actually took him down. Of further interest is that Sgt. Todd happens to be a person of color. But surely that's just a coincidence. I'm sure the color of his skin had absolutely nothing to do with him not receiving any mention by, nor any pictures of him being displayed anywhere in, the media.
- Jim Hearts FF
I don't doubt that she had a hand in it, but why have we not heard about him at all? I live in Killeen, and I'm not sure I have heard him mentioned once in the local news.
- Michelle Martinez
WTF? I had no idea this went down like this either. Interesting turn of events especially after the long write-ups by just about every news agency that focused solely on Sgt. Munley and only her actions.

This isn't the first time that the army has latched on to a female hero though
- Andrizzle Gizzle
The military needs to start just telling the truth, or say nothing at all. Every single time they try to sugarcoat something or change it for a better story, they end up screwing it up and we all find out the truth anyway. It just makes the military look bad. To me (assuming this story is true) both officers acted heroically and did what they were supposed to do.

I don't like Foo Fighters or Hole or Pearl Jam or any of that stuff. I'm rather glad that I wasn't living here during the grunge thing.

- Akiva Moskovitz
It doesn't happen as much now but it used to be that when people online learned that I live in Seattle, I'd always get comments like, "Oh, do you know the members of [Seattle grunge band]?" Right, and everyone who works at Microsoft knows each other, too.

Nirvana was one of the worst live acts I ever saw. Boring. I do like Pearl Jam, and I did meet Kim Thayil once at a Mariners game... does that count?

Being in my mid-twenties and living in Seattle in 91 meant being around all of those people, all of the time. It wasn't difficult to know them. If you drank and smoked pot, proximity was a given. The OK Hotel, The Comet, The Offramp, The Crocodile, The Mecca Cafe. Where else were the musicians gonna go? It's not like Mark Arm was trying to hide from anyone.

Christopher, in 1991, I was 10 years old. :)

I'm with you, Akiva. I liked Nirvana for about a month, then got over it. For me, I was the same way with Pearl Jam. It's not to say I don't like music that came out of that "scene," I'm just not particularly fond of either of those bands. Old Soundgarden was great. Meat Puppets are fantastic. Temple of the Dog is near the top of my favorite albums list.
- Curtiss Grymala
I miss RCKNDY. Sigh. And the Velvet Elvis. I do not miss the Teen Dance Ordinance.
- joey
I was never a fan either. Pearl Jam is also on the list - if you've heard 30 seconds of their music, there's no reason to ever listen to any more 'cause its all the same.
- jcunwired
I saw The Fall at the Backstage in Ballard. Mark E. Smith in BALLARD!
- Christopher Harley
I liked RCKNDY! But my second home was Satyricon in Portland. That's where I first saw Nirvana (pre-Bleach, as I recall) and I think it was there that I saw Mother Love Bone before Andrew died and they re-formed as Pearl Jam. And I saw Soundgarden when they were pretty brand new at Pine St. Theatre in Portland.

The only difference between Cobain and Vicious is that Sid had the forethought to save the rest of us from his wife.

Nice, Vicster! Now Satyricon is such in name only. New owners for the last 6 years or so. Way different vibe. The Pine St. Theater became La Luna but is now offices and condos I think. It's definitely not a live music venue but back in 94-99 it had the best shows in Portland.

@Christopher. Sixth Avenue changed so radically after they extended the bus mall and lit it all up LOL! I was at the Dharma Bums show the night of the "Satyricon Riot". Cleveland is inside the 10... close to winning their first...
- .LAG liked that
Bengals INT... they will beat the Ravens... Cincinnati is one wacky Week 1 tip TD from being undefeated this season. maybe the HBO "Hard Knocks" curse is dead.

switch to Bills/Browns... 7 seconds left... Browns 6, Bills 3... Bills have ball at midfield

This is totally non-NFL, but it's my thread, and I'm a Yankees fan: the Red Sox have been eliminated from the MLB playoffs! Angels win 7-6 in Fenway. Chowdaheads: suck it!!!!!

The Falcons -- the team from that city that hosts 'Real Housewives of Atlanta' -- is currently pummeling the Niners 14-0 in the first!
- .LAG liked that
The Cowboys beat KC 26-20 in OT... new fantasy football sensation (this week) Miles Austin scores on a 60-yard pass-and-catch... to go along with a 59 yard TD reception, and 250 yards on the day
- .LAG liked that
Glen Coffee, who is a stud-in-waiting, scores for the Niners... Falcons 14, Niners 7
- .LAG liked that
The Niners' defense is starting to heat up...!
- .LAG liked that
Oh man, yes, the Broncos throwback unis are terribly ugly. but, just like the SeaHawks neutron-lime-green throwbacks from a few weeks back, these unis are being marketed to a segment outside of the young, hip demographic. cool kids won't buy these, but they also don't buy most of the NFL's tickets.
- .LAG liked that
wow...this Niners defense is really getting fun to watch... they're starting to play like their coach Mike Singletary...like a pack of mad dogs
- .LAG liked that
big plays kill you... Falcons have a HUGE, 90-yard TD pass. still hammering the Niners! and then the Niners fumble the ensuing kickoff...

Seattle is housing the Jaguars, 20-0. Whenever Matt Hasselbeck plays, the Seahawks become a real pro football team, apparently.
- .LAG liked that
The Falcons are about to blow this game WIDE OPEN! Michael Turner scores his third TD, fantasy honks, score is 35-10, and it's not even halftime yet!
- .LAG liked that
Barry... the helmet dreads are just the dreads...meaning: it's the look more and more young guys are rocking today, football or not.
- .LAG liked that
Todd... i wouldn't say 'same old niners.' this is much more that the Falcons are actually a lot better than people think. in particular, i'm impressed at Atlanta's team speed...they're beating the NIners to every spot on the field
- .LAG liked that
...this Atlanta team, it's a real solid unit.
- .LAG liked that
Holy shit what is happening to Jax? Seattle's doin dem boys worse than the Raiders this morning. OUCH.

...if you think about it, the Jacksonville to Seattle Trip is probably the longest road trip you can make in the NFL. lots of East Coast teams fare poorly when they go up to Seattle. Jacksonville never plays there. I blame part of their *ss-whipping on jet lag.
- .LAG liked that
what good can you take from a 45-10 drubbing? well... you did score 10 points. ;) don't worry Niner Fan, no one was penciling you in for a Super Bowl appearance this season. grow and learn.

Ronnie Brown throws out of the wildcat, and completes a pass... fantasy football stats will never be the same. Dolphins are sticking it to the Jets at the start...

Wonderful game! Being a Giants fan, I don't mind the outcome, but Braylon Edwards was directly responsible for my fantasy team going down by 1 measly point. oh well. it's just a game.

I think we just saw the next generation of great pro QBs in action tonight
- LANjackal
from IM
LJ... absolutely: if Sanchez and Henne stay healthy, they could make their teams pretty good for the next ten years...
- .LAG liked that
Love how Miami ran their offense. It's nice to see a little innovation. And love how the Jets fake a few punts. It's nice to see to some sack. There's too much playing it safe by most teams.
- Todd Hoff
...the Miami offense on the final drive was incredible. they had the Jets completely confused.
- .LAG liked that
These are my Week 6 impressions so far: 1) Vikings have two lucky wins; 2) Can't believe the Saints could run up that many points on my Giants; 3) the Redskins may be worse than the Raiders, because they spend even more money and get even less in return; 4) the Rams will probably be moving back to LA....
- .LAG liked that
Yeah I'm shocked at the way the Giants game turned out too. Actually I think the better term is "appalled" :(

Boy, the Titans really really really sucked. I bet the Rams could have shut them out the way they were playing.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
59-0. The Titans must be ready to burn those Oilers throwback uniforms by now.
- Bill Sodeman
It's hard to believe that a professional football team, especially one that was a playoff team, with a 13-3 record, a season ago, could be demolished like this. I can only think that the Titans quit.
- .LAG liked that
I think the Rams, Titans and the Bucs have all quit - in week 6. Stunning.

Broncos or Chargers tonight? I'm going with the Chargers; because I hate the Broncos

Still, the Chargers, and the Cowboys have the best throwback unis ever

Philip Rivers just "shot-putted" that pass to Gates
- .LAG liked that
Do the Chargers special teams realize that this is a game and not a half-speed scrimmage? A 93-yard KO, return and a 73-yard punt return, in less than a half? huh? what?
- .LAG liked that
...true that. everyone in the NFL is fast (as far as humans go) so when you see someone running away from NFL players, you know they are FLYING!!!!
- .LAG liked that
I need a bomb TD pass to Vincent Jackson to have a chance in my third fantasy league... come on Philip Rivers, look his way!

What a catch by Scheffler...sorry Shey, but Rivers is gonna have to throw to move his team...

Your second fantasy team loses Lag? Boo hoo! How about your first? Drew Brees FTW

There are four undefeated teams right now, is one of these teams the next Super Bowl Champion: Broncos, Colts, Saints, Vikings... rhetorical question

Andrew, my first fantasy team (in a real money league) wins this week, thanks to Eddie Royals two big kick return TDs tonight! YEAH!!!!
- .LAG liked that
I lost to Eddie Royal in my keeper league tonight. Was even going in with LT vs. Royal :( I had a bad week in all leagues.

Andrew... I'm in three, one for money, two for show. I'm 2-1 this weekend. Had Vincent Jackson caught one more TD tonight, I'd have gone 3-0. Oh well, it's not like ***I'm*** out there.
