Great post by Steve Larsen reflecting on the early days of the Internet, including awesome rants by The Clue Train Manifesto co-author Christopher Locke.

Looks like the NY Times is finally starting to expose the kind of data no one believed they would just a few months/years back. This is what I like to see! FYI: they're working with a SF company called Mashery to help them with their API strategy, scaling, analytics, etc. We (Cerego) work with Mashery too...

In times of profound change, the learners inherit the earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.

From the page: "The Singularity Summit is the premier event on the singularity. The Singularity Summit was created in 2006 to further understanding about the singularity. It was founded as a place for leading thinkers to explore the subject, whether scientist or skeptic. This year, an outstanding group has been brought together under the theme of "Opportunity, Risk, Leadership." Since 2006, the singularity has become more widely considered. Recent examples include a special report by IEEE Spectrum, flagship publication of a sober professional technology association; and Intel CTO Justin Rattner's keynote to 2,000 people at Intel Developer Forum, who expressed, "We're making steady progress toward the singularity." Whether true or not, it's notable Intel's CTO said it. At the Singularity Summit, you will meet one of the largest concentrations of people anywhere focused on huge ideas. We have created an exclusive online directory to make it easy for you to meet specific people by...

LittleShoot is "a standards-based peer-to-peer application that works directly from your browser with the most powerful searching, publishing, and downloading technology available today. LittleShoot is far more than just a powerful transmitter. It's also a receiver, and it can find new signals. In many ways, it's like Google for files instead of web pages, but that doesn't cover the transmitting. With LittleShoot, publishing your content is clicks away, and you don't have to wait for it to upload anywhere. Breaking this down further, LittleShoot is a tool for: 1. Publishing (transmitting) 2. Searching (finding new signals) 3. Downloading (receiving) LittleShoot provides optimal solutions to all three problems using the best of peer-to-peer and centralized technologies. We give you complete control over publishing and distribution of Internet media, all using open protocols and open standards and released as open source software." Looks very cool indeed, and can't believe they didn't...

From the page: "The goal of this workshop is to foster the research and dissemination of ideas on the mutually beneficial interaction between Wikipedia and AI. Consistent with the original aim of the workshop, the accepted papers address a highly diverse set of problems, in which Wikipedia is seen either as a useful resource, or as a target for algorithms seeking to make it even better. As a rich knowledge source, Wikipedia is shown to benefit applications in information extraction, machine translation, summarization, ontology mining and mapping, and information retrieval. We also learn of interesting applications, most of them using machine learning, that could further enhance the breadth and the quality of Wikipedia, such as predicting the quality of edits, vandalism detection, infobox extraction, crosslingual links creation, and semantic annotation."

Very cool stuff: "The Wikimedia Foundation, an international nonprofit organization dedicated to the growth, development and distribution of free, multilingual content, and Kaltura, Inc., a pioneer in Collaborative Media, announced today that the companies have begun a process aimed at bringing rich-media collaboration to Wikipedia and other wiki websites. Under this project, users will be invited to test new functionality that could one day enable Wikipedia articles to include collaboratively created video, audio, animations, and slideshows as well as text and images."

From their site: "tarpipe is a publishing mediation and distribution platform that simplifies regular upload activities: * Publishing content to multiple Web locations; * Combining different media into a single blog post or article; * Transforming documents on-the-fly; * Managing repeatable upload actions." This is an exciting and potentially very useful new service that acts as a form of Internet "glue" enabling the "stitching" together of disparate pieces of micro-content. It looks like it falls somewhere between the recently beta launched SwitchABit and the the more evolved Yahoo Pipes. It may be too early to tell which of these burgeoning "glue" offerings will take off, but I certainly think there is some very interesting stuff going on in this space, including the advent of XMPP, which could make these glue-like services active and hence even more powerful. Finally, having grown up in Portugal, I was excited to learn that these guys are Portuguese. Here's to tarpipe rocking the...

From their site: "The OpenWeb.Asia Workgroup is a network of premium blogs focused on Asian Web industry. These sites build efficient channels between Asia web and global industry, and also enhance the inter-communication of local Internet markets." Great to have a federation of blogs that are in English and cover web trends in Asia. I have already been reading Asiajin regularly, and know the founders, and had seen a few of the others, but I will now make all of them part of my daily, or at least weekly, reading.

"It's amazing that with all the hoopla around the Social Graph, Google's Social Graph API, and Microformats (go XFN!) an implementation as useful as this one has not surfaced until now (at least as far as I can tell.) I know that Google's indexing of XFN and FOAF is a relatively new thing, and of course, there have been some cool Wordpress plugins that help with XFN-ifying blogrolls, but with the number of sites that are aggregating activity streams (and henceforth "rel=me" links) across the social web (Tumblr, FriendFeed, Plaxo, even FB), I remained surprised. Thanks for this. It will serve as a useful addition to www.iknow.co.jp, not to mention countless other sites that utilize what you've built."
