NetNewsWire 'cause it syncs well with the Mac desktop version (via the web version). Guess I'll give Google Reader and byline a bit of thought, though.
- Grey Drane
byline is a native app that syncs with google reader- I've tried most of them including netnewswire- and they all fall short. Byline is far and away my most used app.
- robin k
@robin - could you quickly compare netnewswire to byline? What does Byline do that NNW doesn't? Thx!
- Grey Drane
you can't view starred (or clipped) items on the mobile version and it's a lot buggier. On NNW- I've had issues with syncing.
- robin k
OK. Yeah, I haven't really been bothered about the lack of clipped items on the iPhone (usually I clip the stuff I want to read more carefully -- and ofter research some more -- on the computer), and I think they've actually fixed (most of?) the syncing problems, but I haven't used Google Reader in a long time, so maybe it's time to reevaluate it, too. Thx!
- Grey Drane
One thing I might miss about NNW is being able to read just a specific feed, rather than having to scroll through the whole folder of feeds. But I'm still deciding.... (Or am I missing something in Byline?)
- Grey Drane
You're right- it could be an issue depending on how you setup your folders... Mine are pretty specific to the category so it's rare that it ever comes up for me. The beauty is in that you have the fallback of the google reader safari app- so if you ever feel like just viewing a specific feed, you can revert to that.
- robin k
Yeah, that's why I say I'm still thinking about it. I may find a better way to organize my feeds and may even get rid of some feeds that don't give me enough good stuff to read.
- Grey Drane
Byline is the best RSS reader for the iPhone that I've found. Works perfectly with Google Reader.
- Chris Rodgers
I've bought byline. it's so cool! really worth to buy!
- foxmachia {山石}
Byline. Main difference from Reader is that it downloads and feeds for reading offline. Spent a lot of time on my last flight catching up on rss feeds!
- Mike Chang
but its reading experience is much much better plus fewer crash than safari when loading a chunk of picture and texts
- foxmachia {山石}
The biggest issue with using safari for me- is when I launch a link in a new window, then return to a blank page. Byline's built in browser doesn't have this issue- as you can always go to the next unread, from within its browser.
- robin k
mostly use Twinkle (Twitter client) and FriendFeed's iPhone site for staying up-to-date.
- Jon Price
So with byline, how do you sync it back to your google reader if you star some items. I can't figure out how to do that?
- Amani
Byline, it's nice looking and easy to use. @Amani: press that reload button at bottom left
- Kristian Salonen
@Kristian - Voila ... it works. Thanks. So simple.
- Amani
NetNewsWire. I like how it syncs online so I can read on my iPhone and my PC and not repeat news.
- J Craig
I've been using Byline since hearing all the good things about it in this discussion, and its reading experience is certainly pretty good, but syncing and, particularly, archiving is so unbelievably, annoyingly slow. What's up with that?! I mean, I generally sync over Wi-Fi, but even then it can take minutes just to archive one article.
- Grey Drane
A combination of Google Reader (Safari) and Byline. Syncing with my online Google Reader account is a major plus. I agree with @grey that syncing is sloooow ... but the reading experience compensates that issue.
- Peter van Teeseling
Anybody know how to solve the sync problems with byline, sometimes looks to works fine but later you reopen the program and find an old sync status. any idea?
- Mauro A. Fuentes
Any app for Symbian S60 to use Remember the Milk?
- Ozkan Altuner
Protpage.com. I keep a master list and todays list. Also some sticky notes for things like grocery lists or other reminders. Also keep my Google calendar on it.
- ChiliMac
from twhirl
Remember the Milk is awesome on Firefox inside Gmail with extension.
- paisano
from twhirl
@Ozkan here you have mostly US crowd who sold their souls for Apple crap, so don't expect them any serious advice on S60. For S60 you can use that Apple debilitated HTML output -- last service packs were adjusted so that Apple sites _also_ shown perfect. But better result will be with XHTML. For offline sync one might need someone to write you an app.
- A.T.
recently notes on iGoogle, but mostly still whatever piece of paper i can find.
- laura
rmilk.com aka RTM aka Remember The Milk.. and going over my to do list has been named "Milking The Cow" by my friend. It integrates well, and I used JOTT with it until JOTT started to charge for the link.
- RAD Moose
multi-prong approach: paper (yes) for quick organization and doodles (visuals); then i use a graphic tool (mindmapping) to plot out my project design --> MS project. I then use MS Outlook tasks to remind me of important milestones/checkpoints; also JIRA bug/issue tracking. Key tasks are in outlook / blackberry. (Grocery list is in google docs)

- Selim Yoruk
every sunday i read the local newspaper and enjoy it. also every morning that i'm in a hotel room i read my free copy of the wall street journal or USA Today
- Jonathan Jesse
We get three here at home: Wall St. Journal, New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle. It's a challenge to read them, I'm getting most updates via web.
- Hutch Carpenter
the only time I ever read one is when visiting family or in a doctor's office. I never buy one myself and just read it because it is there. My local paper has everything online so nosense in buying it when I can just view one of the few local stories I may want to read for free.
- Dean Clark
It's been years since I've sat down for any length of time to go through a paper from front to back. It used to be one of those things I really looked forward to doing too - Saturday morning, pot of coffee and a few hours with the paper. Now it seems less relevant to me.
- Kevin Cearns
2 weeks ago, Financial Times. I always read FT on paper. Love that touch-and-feel of FT :)
- Hayk H.
Does the NYTimes on my Kindle count? If yes, every morning!

We usually buy a sunday paper a couple or three times a year on the impetus that there's a big sale (like Black Friday). But the main reason we buy it is so that I have liner for my bird's cage for the next few months.

I love reading a paper when I go out for breakfast. Nothing is quite as satisfying. Staring at your laptop seems anti-social whereas flipping through a paper allows for more interaction. But I still like books too.
- Todd Hoff
I read the NYT and Philadelphia Inquirer daily. Can't find articles online like I do when flipping pages. And the crossword -- no way.

Sunday's I get the paper for the coupons.

Yesterday and every Sunday. NY Times.
- Dave Martin
This Saturday, the great Independent, though not bought a paper before then for ages. But we in London get several free papers that are dotted around every tube and Greater London station so I pick up the odd one sometimes to read
- Kol Tregaskes
I read one last winter out of curiosity. For the most part the answer could be 4-5 years?
- Kevin Gamble
I read the SJ Mercury from cover to cover yesterday. But honestly I only read the paper about once per week. Much easier to read news on the web in between tasks throughout the day.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Only when I go to a hotel on business, or it's at a restaurant lobby. I bought maybe 4 in the last year.
- Jeremiah Owyang
I read at least one newspaper every morning. I think it helps get away from the tunnel vision created by niche communities

We'll have a head-to-head between the two Michael. For starters, the Wind is about a half-pound lighter and has a full-sized, correctly placed Right-Shift key. That's a must for me. :)
- Kevin C. Tofel
Of course the advantage the Eee 1000H has over the Wind is that I am actually using it right now! No waiting for delivery is necessary - Amazon has them in stock. Right shift keys aren't an issue for me, I'm pretty much a left-shift-only kind of guy. The 1/2 lb lighter would be nice, though. Right now the 1000H seems HUMONGOUS compared to my Eee 900.
- Michael Connick
So far 3G on my iPhone has worked outstandingly well for me - but my only experience with it has been in the Charleston-Huntington, WV area and the northern VA suburbs of DC. I should find out next month how it works in the Philadelphia and/or NYC metropolitan areas.
- Michael Connick
I had a reception problem with my 1st Gen two weeks after the 3G launch. Apple replaced it with no questions asked. Then I upgraded just because it was so easy to offload my 1st Gen for $400. In the end…It was worth it to me and my problems have been minimal. I live in the DC area so my coverage is pretty good. GPS is a nice addition and G3 provides me with a noticeable speed increase...

@Steve My question is, once you have these blacklisted apps, how do you keep them? Won't you lose them on the next sync?
- Al Stevens
First of all, there are currently no blacklisted applications. Second, the poorly understood function for removing applications seems only to apply to Core Service apps and seems to be a way of dealing with possible malware. There has been a tremendous amount of hot air written on this topic.
- Michael Connick
I didn't get NetShare. But I sure am glad I snagged one of those I Am Rich apps before they took it down. ; )
- Rex Hammock
@michael connick So does that mean once you have an app it's yours to keep? Don't really want to surrender Phone Saber!
- Al Stevens
same here, Steve. Now if I could get it to work.
- Warner Crocker
My understanding is that if you paid for it the application is yours. Of course if it's pulled from the App Store there won't be any updates for it.
- Michael Connick
NetShare is great. It's just has a lot of setup steps each time you use it.
- Brad Davis Seal
This is exactly the reason I'm not getting an iPhone.
- Amit Morson
I haven't had to restore but I've definitely had problems with installs not completing when downloading on the phone. I've also had updates to installed apps fail.

Installing from iTunes seems like the obvious choice I guess.
- Bob Blunk
It is definitely smoother to install from iTunes here.
- Warner Crocker

MacBook Pro. I love my iPhone but there is still much to be said for the experience of typing on a keyboard and being able to cut and paste.

95% of my reading on my iPhone is with Google Reader. I find it more fun to browse it on my phone than my PC.
- Sean Davis
I posted a similar question two weeks ago -- stunned that on a recent vacation my iPhone was sufficient for all my needs, and in fact more pleasurable than my firefox-encased PowerBook experience. iPhone gave me simple direct access to all my media sources, and the wife and I have been playing ongoing Scrabble games ever since. Perfection!

I'm tempted too but I'm still worried about the battery life. Don't want to switch 3G on and off all day.
- Kevin C. Tofel
Yes, I'm finding 3G to really suck down the battery at a pretty good clip. So I just got a car charger to go with the normal charger. Having the 3G is really worth the little extra trouble of keep a close eye on the battery level. Speaking of 3G, I've been astonished to find the entire Charleston, WV area well covered by AT&T 3G service. I even get a good signal in my house in the suburbs. Sprint has never managed to get any EV-DO service in the Charleston area.
- Michael Connick
Wow, I just added my new iPhone to the 2 PCs and 1 iPod Touch that all sync calendars and contacts and it's all working very well for me
- Michael Connick
minor annoyances here. syncing works fine though. just can't believe using the web mail means you have to memorize email addresses. that contact integration is STILL broken is beyond me.

I had an online diary sort of site in the mid 90s, inspired by what Justin Hall was doing back then (a pioneer of blogging, great guy), but I abandoned it after a while. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... - Haven't had a 'real' blog since then.

depends on what you mean by blogging. i published an HTML e-zine in '93.
- Anthony Citrano
I'm user # 919 on LiveJournal but technically I muxed accounts. I had a reverse chrono website going back to 97 or so. I had a WordPress blog with many years of content but whacked it due to apathy and boredom after the first punch of traffic. I'm taking Geritol too.
- Jay Cuthrell
I wish that I did. The remainder of it was lost on an old Colorado Tape Backup in the mid-90s. I also ran a FidoNet node BBS from about 87-92. We had some cool newsletters/publications/discussion threads going around back then with each other, but they were ASCII / ANSI not HTML so I don't think they count. (I mean, to be blogging, it has to be the web, right?) So that's why I meant it depends on how we're defining blogging.
- Anthony Citrano
Also someone at my school (University of Southern Maine) supposedly published the first Bitnet magazine as well but I need to dig up the details.
- Anthony Citrano
My first online website that I updated frequently? Probably 1994
- Bwana ☠
Late '96 and they were called 'online journals' back then. I used a homegrown flat file setup and I got ruthlessly made fun of for it (for actually having an online journal; not the flat file setup). Now they're all on Livejournal. Suckas!

Active on Usenet in the late 1970's, I wrote one of the first Mac BBS systems (Mouse Exchange) in 1984, and then the first Mac Fidonet software (Tabby) in 1985 and got my picture in MacWorld), so I've been talking on some kind of public network forever!
- Michael Connick
from twhirl
I don't think that quite counts as blogging, though. However, I'm envious; I loved and miss the brief time I had on USENET before it was stormed and by the AOL 'me too' army.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Akiva: it's unclear - which is why I asked "what do we mean by blogging". There's no doubt that the publications and conversations circulating on Usenet and Fidonet and the BBS world back in the day were online diaries / opinion journals / threaded discussions just like we have today with web logs. The strict definition, though, would be the web / HTML version of such things, which wasn't really around (for most of us) until the summer of '93.

Safari went bonkers on my iPod Touch; started complaining that I wasn't connected to the Internet when I clearly was - now doing a full restore, hope this works to fix it!
Well I'm flip-flopping between buying an iPhone this month or waiting until October when my Sprint contract expires.
- Michael Connick
Well the restore didn't fix the problem, so next I'm going to start deleting apps to see if one or more of them is causing some kind of conflict with Safari. If it isn't any of them, then it's likely a hardware problem. I don't even want to think about that!
- Michael Connick
Well removing apps didn't work either. Time for plan Z - a complete restore from a different PC, thereby no files or settings will be restored. It should be factory fresh. If this doesn't work then it's back to Apple!
- Michael Connick
from twhirl
That didn't work either, looks like it's time to send the Touch back to Apple for service. Too bad there aren't any Apple Stores in WV! Looks like I just got further motivation to buy an iPhone sooner rather than later. Now, where is the nearest AT&T store?
- Michael Connick
I installed Scrabble, Facebook, and that roller-ball game (can't remember the name). The apps stall frequently, and I can't even get back to my phone's main screen for about a minute. Hard resets didn't even work. Very annoying.
- Bret Taylor
I haven't had a stall or crash yet. I'm on the OG iPhone.
- Clay Newton
there seem to be some memory issues. I'm using the original iphone with 2.0 and have had many of the problems with crashes, etc. I just did a fresh restore (not from backup) and things seem a little better. Also, if you're having problems with apps starting and immediately crashing....try removing the app from your phone, and resyncing to itunes. It will reinstall it, and it should be fine. Some sort of security thing that's getting hung up.
- shaun mclane
It's buggy on the new phones too. Some apps behave better than others. Does the iPhone have preemptive multitasking? It might not.
- Steve Rubel
I'm using an original with 2.0 software. It crashes a lot, but the benefits are large. I was just driving around when I parked and opened up "Boxoffice", found out hellboy was playing near me, and now I'm posting to ff outside the theatre. The apps are making this a cooler though less stable world.
- Andrew
Interesting, I've installed about 10 apps on my 16GB iPod Touch and haven't noticed any problems at all. I have had iTunes 7.7 crash twice during syncing, but without any ill effects on either iTunes or my iPod.
- Michael Connick
In addition to everything said above, my battery life has gone to hell
- Dominik Hofmann
bret, i'm having similar issues -- i think i'm mostly chalking it up to the fact that i installed a fair number of apps, am messing around a lot, etc. think once i settle down, and the apps get a little better, life will be better. (hopefully)
- John Lilly
You know what this means right? iPhone == Windows XP. Perfectly fine until you install lots of crappy 3rd party apps.
- xero
@xero It feels more like iPhone=Treo 650 - way too many tip calcs, and a few crashes an hour
- shaun mclane
Appliances should not crash. A phone is an appliance imo. I really want an iPhone but the battery life issue and stability issues I've been seeing pop up have me rethinking.
- xero
I was having the same problem - even top rated apps were crashing everytime. I ended up performing a restore from iTunes and now everything works just fine.
- Phil Maxwell
agree ... Apps have been crashing frequently
- Nick O'Neill
Brett: just curious, did you go with the preview version on Thursday or the version via iTunes? If the former, you might want to check out: http://www.macrumors.com/2008...
- Robert Seidman
My battery life is terrible because I'm addicted to Aurora Feint.
- Amit Patel
o thats bc your using the iphone, simply return it to the steve jobs home address for store credit.....dignity non-refundable.
- Anthony
Me too. The jailbreak apps were much more stable and useful; now I suppose they'll die off. Super Monkey Ball is the major cause of crashes on my machine; the Google app is #2.
- Daniel Dulitz
I'm noticing many hangups and sluggishness but I have nothing to compare it too (first iPhone). Monkeyball wouldn't start a couple of times either. Turning off and back on again resolved all problems.
- James Hull
I have found twitterfic and loopt to be the worse. Many times they will automatically restart my iphone. (gen 1)
- Tony
Wait, your phone is more sluggish even when you aren't running the apps? That's weird, because I thought the whole design was that apps couldn't run in the background, specifically to avoid impacting the user experience.
- ⓞnor
A complete restore definitely seemed to help. We'll see how it lasts...
- Bret Taylor
Apps are cool, but battery life seems worse.
- Michael Herf
Already had that happening before, but yes, it's getting worse. I've become adept at whipping out a charger when I'm near power
- Robyn Miller

I usually describe my iPod Touch as a pocket computer that can also play media. The iPhone is a pocket computer that can also be used as a phone.
- Michael Connick
@rbonini, I have had to do a hard reboot at least once every other day. It sometimes takes me a minute to even get it to respond to a power button hold, and then longer because I can't move the slider.
- Robyn Miller
Battery life is the major hurdle the mobile phones need to conquer.
- Muthu Ramadoss
Do we need Intel to come in to picture for the processor at least with better performance and less power consumption. I think the processor has to scale up before these phones can smoothly support all the pc functions

I been hearing the battery story for 5 years now! iPhone is nothing new, it is a PDA with Windows CE! Solve the battery problem and stop lying how many hour it will hold charge! You lucky if you can finish a DVD on a clean charge?

I cannot use the Camera or go into Photo album right now on iPhone - both crash every time. Starting a restore...

The current iPhone has multiple processors. It has 3 ARM chips in it. 3G may have the ARM multi-core chips. Not sure. The power draw isn't the processor, it is the network, screen and GPS. This is why it lasts longer when that stuff is off.
