It’s that time of year again, summer has descended upon us in New York and it’s a hot one. Last week alone the temperature hit a sweltering 95 degrees!! Every year, I head to Bed Bath and Beyond in search of a fan that will help save money on extensive air conditioning. This year, I decided to test out a very avant-garde looking fan, the Dyson Air Multiplier. It’s not your typical run-of-the mill fan. Dyson, the same company that brought us the vacuum to rival all vacuums, came up with a very innovative technology – A Bladeless Fan! Gone are the days of the annoying clicking noises and dusty blades. This baby is dead silent, a dream to clean, and full of power. It’s a typical Dyson product that exemplifies thoughtful design and quality. If you’re looking to invest in a fan, Dyson’s Air Multiplier is it. Good luck with the heat wave, it’s about to be a scorcher.

Romeo to the Rescue!

A multi-talented friend of mine, Imran Khan (from Columbia Business School and 30/60/90) recently launched Letters to Romeo. It’s an anonymous forum for users to share in the universal bang-ups and hang-ups in relationships. It is a conversational community for those looking for humor in what can sometimes be a miserable part of life: dating. Visitors have the opportunity to write their own ‘Dear Romeo’ letter to their spouse, partner or ex and tell them the one thing they haven’t been able to say to their face. The LTR community is the perfect place for users to share advice, engage in relationship talk, and even vote on whether to Dump Him/Keep Him! With Valentine’s Day around the corner, relationships are top of mind.  Take a look for yourself and join in the banter…(www.LetterstoRomeo.com).

I hold off putting on the heat in my apartment as long as possible.  So, with the chilly nights we’ve had lately, Lizzie and I have had to huddle for warmth in our giant robes with Andy Wintour.  Autumn has definitely set in, and in an effort to save cash and go a little greener, I tried out a sexy new kitchen gadget to help warm up.

My first experience with the Nespresso Citz was at my parents’ apartment in SF.  Snowflake loves it and, while we were visiting in the spring, Megan Alagna and I got up early (mostly due to jet lag) and made our morning gingerbread lattes and sat on the balcony and chatted.

I’m kind of obsessed with the Citz because it actually does rival Starbucks, Think Coffee, or, likely, your local coffee house.  The espresso comes in coffee capsules, like many machines nowadays, but unlike others, you can get this machine with a separate (and amazing!) milk frother.  Add one of the tiny attachments, pour in milk, and you have perfectly steamed milk or milk and foam with the push of a button.

I had a cappuccino machine in the past, but the steamer never worked right, and it was always a mess.  With the Nespresso, I can make a latte (as good as any I buy from a coffee house) effortlessly with no mess.

The price point is high – it runs about $350 – but if you actually use it to replace your $4 lattes, it pays for itself in a few months.  If not, then you’ve just bought a very expensive piece to clutter your countertops.  The capsules are kind of a pain to buy – you can only get them at select stores or online through Nespresso.  And, I do sometimes miss the sweet Starbucks Pumpkin Spice latte or Caramel Macchiato…maybe I’ll head over there to pick up some supplies to add to my Nespresso beverages at home.

Nespresso generously provided a loaner Citiz for this review, which I will be sad to see go.  :(

NonSociety is BEYOND thrilled to welcome our newest contributor: Lindsay “new media mama” Campbell.

Lindsay and I have known each other for years, since she interviewed my very creative ex Jakob for Wall Strip back in 2007.

Lindsay is truly a new media pioneer - she’s been in the internet space since helping to found Wallstrip, a daily web show about the stock market and pop money culture that ran for over 300 eps and eventually sold to CBS. As a producer/host for CBS she also co-founded and hosted a daily progressive news and politics show called MobLogic which allowed her to do some truly daring reporting.
Since then she’s re-partnered with her original Wallstrip team and created an indie web studio called Bright Red Pixels. They have two branded entertainment projects online right now with CBS.  Before all these internet shenanigans, she went to Stanford for undergrad, helped found a startup, got her masters in Acting in Denver at the National Theater Conservatory and lived in NYC for 6 years pursuing a more traditional acting career. In 2009, she moved to LA with my longtime partner, Aaron (a screenwriter), and late last summer we found out they found out they were having a baby! They eloped in December at NYC City Hall and had a beautiful, healthy and huge baby boy named Whalen in April 2010. “He is- in NonSociety parlance- amazeballs,” says Lindsay. :)
Lindsay just got back from NYC shooting the 70-something-th episode of “Small Business Rules” for Next New Networks and Amex (a show she produces with former TMIweekly videographer Sherng-Lee Huang).
Lindsay’s lifecast will be - in her own words, “about balancing life, love and work after a baby enters the picture.” As she says, “I rarely read a Mommy-blog that speaks to me. I really don’t want to give up any part of the life I lived before; I’d rather my life to expand to let this knew role in. Aaron and I feel really passionately about making sure this new little life in our lives be just that: NEW LIFE.”

We couldn’t be more honored or happy she’s chosen to join our NonSociety team.

Please bookmark Lindsay.NonSociety.com and watch her story unfold … ;)

NonSociety & Havaianas Perfect Sunset Contest!

As soon as summer starts to heat up, I break out my Havaianas.  They’re kind of indicative of summer for me.  What else makes me feel like it’s summer?  Watching the sunset.

It’s kind of hard to get a great sunset view in the city.  Occasionally, I’ll catch a glimpse between buildings or in Central Park or from the top of a high rise.  But, most of the time, I only get to enjoy it when I’m out of town, which is not often enough – you know how I love to travel!

So…NonSociety has partnered with Havaianas (as part of Havaianas RSVP to Summer Initiative) to collect as many perfect sunsets as possible.  Each week during the month of July, participants will have the chance to submit a “perfect sunset” picture of their own to Havaianas for a chance to win a pair of Havaianas.  No pics you found online – send us the real thing!  Finally, during the last week of July, the best sunset picture of the month will win a set of Havaianas!  (That’s SIX pairs chosen by YOU!!!)

This week, I’m the guest judge, so make your pictures good.  I’ve traveled a lot and watched the sun go down everywhere, so I have VERY high standards when it comes to sunsets!

Here’s how to enter:

Contestants must submit their pictures by Monday at 11:59pm (EST) and there are three ways to enter the contest each week:
 1) Tumblr: Head over to RSVPtosummer.tumblr.com, click the “submit a post” link. If you choose to submit a post via Tumblr, you must be following Havaianas on Tumblr (RSVPtoSummer.tumblr.com) to be eligible to win.
 2) Twitter: Upload your picture, mention @havaianas and #perfectsunset in the tweet. If you choose to submit a post via Twitter, you must be following @Havaianas on Twitter to be eligible to win.
 3) Facebook: Upload a picture the Havaianas Facebook wall: http://www.facebook.com/Havaianas
The winner will be announced each week on Wednesday at 2:00pm (EST) on the Havaianas Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/Havaianas  and the NonSociety Facebook page:  http://www.facebook.com/NonSociety, so don’t forget to become a fan!
