Yeah, that is why not many people use them.

There don't seem to be many good alternatives for group collaboration on the web, ever since wikis got so stupid and cumbersome and whatever the opposite is of "wiki wiki".

Did wikis get worse? I'm not aware of that--seems to me MediaWiki works about the same as it did years ago. What did get worse: Spammers. A lot worse. And, well, most people can't be bothered with wikis. Unless they're one of the RulePlayers on Wikipedia, of course.

I don't think I ever used MediaWiki? I feel like WYSIWIG/advertising destroyed the wiki. Case in point: http://pbworks.com/

google sites used to be decent, until google took away all options for you to actually use any real HTML code

Oh, I'm sure you've *used* MediaWiki, at least as a reader...unless, for example, you've never used Wikipedia...and a few tens of thousands of other wikis.
- Walt Crawford
And Google promoted Sites to the main navbar, kicking Reader down into the More menu :( I don't want to use anything like that where I can't use some of my own code.

Walt, yes, I've used MediaWiki, as both a reader and a contributor, and it works, if you are interested in hosting your own installation and learning the ins and outs of MediaWiki markup. But if you're looking for free, hosted, simple wikis, then I have to agree--most of the good options are gone.

Laura: Ah. Well, you know how it is with free services that aren't paid for by taxes or intrusive advertising (or grant funding)...especially ones that serve a small audience. Since there are *no* customers in that case, they tend not to survive very long.

You can use your own code in Google Sites if you're willing to take the extra step of making a Google gadget. Which is not difficult, but is an extra step. Its pretty common for Aikido to limit your coding options.
