Last few weeks have been really busy.I am enjoying the modules more compared to last semester and trying not to do the same mistakes as last semester,I make more notes and try to read before the lecture so I feel more familiar with the topics during the lecture.Unlike last semester I am enjoying all the modules equally but #BS1005 Genes module is giving me a hard time but still I enjoy it,I understood that being more organized and knowing what you are doing motivates you more, and even if you do not understand what is going on you feel more eager to understand....I am also very pleased and satisfied with my exam results....I also find the content of the practicals really interesting especially the practicals of microbiology #BS1009....

Does anyone know, what time on tuesday we need to hand in the practical report for #BS1013? , first semester it was 10 o`clock but some of us have practical till 12.:S
In the module handbook it says 10am =S So we will have to hand it either Monday before it closes (is that 4pm?) or come in extra early on Tuesday :(

This week has been very busy for me,trying to settle down everything again after exams and settin brand new organisation rules for myself.I feel more organised than the last semester and will not make the same mistakes again.I am trying to make more notes during the lectures and read through the lecture material in advance. And also I started to read in more detail on the practical material before the practical so that I am quicker during the experimental work.Apart from these, second semester has started pretty fast I think, already have 3 essays and couple of practical submission mostly due to the beginning of march :(...and lastly I have decided to contribute friendfeed more eventough it needs minimmum 6 hours work per week, which includes google reader and weekly assessments...
- melis guvensoy
Can you explain "6 hours work per week"?
- Dr Alan Cann
Well,it takes and hour to find an article, read thourgh, understand all the chemical terms, since we are mean to post 3 artciles from google reader per week that is nearly 3 hours and if lets say every day half an hour on friendfeed(mydiary and commenting on other things) that becomes 3.5 hours, actually it is more than 6 hours if I include the assessments which take minimum 1 hour per week.
- melis guvensoy
I'm sure we only have to post one article a week, using RSS feeds or Bookmarklet. :|
- Roshan Rupra
Melis, please read the instructions for session 1 of #BS1011 and come and talk to me in the help session on Monday.
- Dr Alan Cann
First week o has started quite fast I think.I found the contents of the lectures and practicals more enjoyable compared to the last semester.I feel more confident during practical work since we had lots of practical last semester.I already have 3 essays to write which is kind of stressful, but being more organised may minimise the stress of the submission deadlines,I feel lot more positive about the modules we are taking right now.Now I am focussing on to manage and orginise everything and I cannot help feeling tired still becuase of the exams so I am trying not to stress myself too much for the first few weeks.Above all,I am feeling pretty happy and loving the course so far:)

Can anybody help me finding the characteristic differences between SAM and RAM...apart from the obvious differences like SAM being 2-D and being covered by root cap etc....:S
ITS update – CFS log-on is available but with limited access to IT services. Email is also available. THATS WHAT IT SAYS BUT WHERE?:))) i really cant find
Do not worry, I can not log in to black board as well. The ITS update only refers to CFS log-on, which is this page https://securewebmail.le.ac.uk/ . On the top right of the page, you should see " Log in" and you should be able to login to this as usual. However, for blackboard , it's not yet possible to.

BETWEEN #BS1015 AND #BS1003 WE HAVE TWO DAYS...which is quite bad...I wish they put #BS1012 right after biochemistry at least it is easier to understand--ohw it is going to be a busy holiday!!
I have two exams on two consecutive days! Having 2 days in between is a gift!
- Lyndsey Wright
When I look from that side you are right Lyndsed-next year will be lot harder than this...
- melis guvensoy
Its a little harder yes but it is worth it :)
- Lyndsey Wright
For tomorrow`s #BS1015 test, will we be tested on our practical write-ups as well or just the information on white pages?Because we do not have feedbacks for some of the experiments...himmm:S
for me that lecture just flew by, it went so fast. Probably because i had drank to much caffeine to stay awake today.
- Neil Nathwani
Dr Evans' accent, haha! And that the Nerst equation won't be tested tomorrow. (:
- Roshan Rupra
Ha, yeah :'). I doubt anyone will bother learning that yet if its not in the test, wasn't much point mentioning it :P
- Rebecca Suter
I was a bit surprised that he basically started the lecture by stating "most of what I'm about to tell you, you won't be tested on". Seems a bit pointless really!
- Sami Kimyongur
i quite liked the bit he then said wouldn't be in the test tbh :(
- Christopher morton
Can anyone tell me how to decide how many chiral centers a molecule has? I am so confused
I think Im having a nervous breakdown because of the tomorrow`s #CH1070 test...have been revising but its like I wont be remembering any of them...one week before christmas holiday,I think its too much:(
i agreeeeee really ruining the festive spirit
- Dip Makanji
i agree with u. The timing of the exams aren't great. The end of the term can get quite stressful with all of these exams. But i think the best thing to do is to take a break when things are getting too much. Then come back to work feeling better. And just think, this time on friday we can enjoy christmas properly :)
- Yewande O
Just finished #BS1010 assessment on areas and volumes got 92% which is not bad:)
Very proggresive day so far, have done most of the chemistry #CH1070 revision which is kind of relaxing, now starting to do #BS1012 write up,hope I can find good answers...
Can anyone tell me on #CH1070 lecture advanced kinetics part 1 slide 18- about the Arrhenius equation is k=Aexp(-Ea/RT) same thing as Ink=InA- Ea/RT if not what does the green arrow indicate??
they are exactly the same. All he has done is that he cancelled the exponential on right hand side by ln. Therefore it gives lnk=lnA-Ea/RT. This is then put in y=mx+c format. Hope this helps. Its hard to explain the maths without you being there.
- Nathan Gill
Yes as Nathan said they are exactly the same but there are multiple ways of expressing one equation. The overall aim is to show y=mx+c which is a straight line. Im not going to worry to much about the detailed mathematics for #CH1070 as there are limited questions that a multiple choice exam can throw at you. Good luck
- James Muir
Thank you Nathan and James that was helpful,I wasnt just sure if exp and in is the inverse way of putting it...:))
- melis guvensoy
#FridayReflection What is the most important thing I have learned this term?
The most important thing that I have learnt this term is how to manage my time to revise and get organised for the deadlines, after getting orginsed you need to do your independent work, its totatlly up to you whether to study or not this kind of made me study harder and harder...Another thing; revising lectures right after the lecture is very important because fresh information stays permanently whereas revising the given lecture after weeks might not stay in your head...also reading thorugh the procedure of the practicals beforehands makes a big difference on your performance during the experiment....
- melis guvensoy
Just got back from #BS1012 practical, I must say I did not enjoy it at all because we had so many drawings to do only in 3 hours it was very stressful so I could not have chance to anaylze what I drew,it was not very helpful I think,I need to do some side researching to understand what I exactly examined in the lab :)
I agree, there was just not enough time for the drawings and I didn't have time to ask the demonstrators about the other questions :-(
- Kanta Purkayastha
I do agree on the rushed part, but I still found the practical itself pretty cool :-) I'm now researching the questions myself which is kinda good as I'm learning extra info as I research but it is definitely time consuming....
- Rachel Bell
Heading to the #BS1012 practical, personally I don`t like plants but this practical looks quite interesting:))
Only mechanism in organic chemistry #CH1070 I understand with ease is one with the nucleophilic attack becuase Dr.Rawling demonstrated with an umberalla,I think it was very good way of explaining it...
rawling's is good at showing how the mechanisms work visually, definitely makes things easier! he should make videos of them and stick them on blackboard with the relevant lectures.
- George Woolnough
from iPhone
I agree-he is pretty good showing the mechanisms eventough sometimes I dont understand
- melis guvensoy
If you understand one mechanism, it just takes a bit of thinking to figure out the rest. This might sound stupid but try to picture how the electrons will be arranged in a reagent. So think about whether there are any charged atoms or delta plus or minus atoms, then think about where they'd like to move. Then if a specific molecule is introduced, how those electrons might move. If it's something more complex, then just write it out over and over, cover it up and do it again.
- Xanthe Simpson-Gray
Thats basically what I am doing drawing them over and over again but its a good idea to think where the atoms would like move to thanks!...
- melis guvensoy
I agree! I love how he used things such as an umbrella because it sticks in your head without realising it!
- Alice Baxter
Eventough I started as early as I can to revise the organic material for tuesday`s #CH1070 exam I can`t help getting stressed since all the mechanisms seem lot more complicated than I tought...
I found these mechanisms a little difficult and complicated too ....
- Persefoni Ioannou
If you recognise all the products of the pathways, its a lot easier to work backwords and recognise which enzyme is responsible for which pathway. Hope this is helpful..
- Munaf khamisa
I agree with munaf, working backwards at times not only emphasises some key aspects that people often over-read, bit also reinforces acquired knowledge. Basically you'll do really well in the exam!!
- Mayank Patel
from iPhone
I found this video helpful for explanining orbital hybridization based on module #CH1070 lecture -organic 9....hope it helps :)http://www.youtube.com/watch...
Yeah it seems bit strange, but Im just trying to find as much information as I can since I didnt understand anything from the lecture:(
