I've played in the Arctic, but that was indoors. Still, I remember how brutally cold it was to run from the truck to the community hall, while wearing a kilt. Deadly. I don't know how that guy above did it. - Brent Schaus

How many female pipers have you met? I was watching a bit of the All Ireland Championships tonight and I realized that at least some women might be put off the instrument by the jowliness it might encourage in old age. That is, like saxophone, trumpet and other instruments, players tend to have enormous pouch-like cheeks and chins. I'm not the girliest girl ever but I may well have... more... - Spidra Webster
I've known a few, but they were in the minority, for sure. Part of the reason, I suspect, is that much of my time piping was spent in military pipe bands. They're not the strict boys clubs they once were, but guys still predominate. - Brent Schaus
That being said, there are a few all-female pipe bands out there :) - Brent Schaus

"Wednesday, February 27th is Pink Shirt day, when we wear pink to show our opposition to bullying in all forms. Every year I like to make a point of wearing pink to show my solidarity with people who are bullied. Everyone deserves to feel safe, to be a part of our society, and to be free from fear and harassment. Bully this!   I'm of a size and disposition that makes it unlikely I'll be bullied, so that makes it all the more important for people like me to stand up and say we won't allow bullying to happen in our presence. If you want to participate, I'd love to count you in. Check out Pink Shirt day's Facebook page, or just join me in wearing pink--I think it's the toughest colour I know." - Spidra Webster from Bookmarklet

Winexpert Tim's Blog - Unthinkably Pink
"Yes, yes, I know: what has been seen can't be unseen and I owe some folks eyeball bleach to get that image out of their minds. But it's all in a good cause. Monday, February 29th is Pink Shirt Day, when you can take the opportunity to stand against bullying by showing your colours--in this case, pink. By wearing pink you'll show others that you're committed to a bully-free lifestyle. Awareness of bullying has come a very long way since my school days when kids were advised to 'Stand up for yourself', and that, 'Bullies are cowards, they'll back down'. Hogwash, of course. Bullies are manipulative, hurtful sociopaths, and rather than 'back down', they come back from another direction, working to isolate their victims and torment them. The only way to deal with them is to shine a light on their behaviour and to confront it at every turn: evil thrives in darkness and together we can light up the corners where they hide, and standing together we can abnegate their anti-social acts and... more... - Spidra Webster from Bookmarklet

Scots actor Kevin McKidd proves he is one Tough Mudder as he completes extreme assault course in his kilt - The Daily Record
"GREY'S ANATOMY star Kevin McKidd raised thousands for charity after completing "the world's toughest race" in a kilt. The Scot overcame a 12-mile assault course then flew the Lion Rampant at the finish line. Kevin scaled walls, crawled through tunnels filled with icy water and clambered over electric fences in the Tough Mudder challenge - designed by the Royal Marines. The Trainspotting and Rome actor got shocked twice and injured his ribs during the race near Lake Tahoe in California at the weekend. But it was worth it as he raised £7000 for Save The Children's east Africa appeal. Elgin-born Kevin, 38, thanked fans for their support via Twitter. He tweeted: "We did it - bruised and cramps from HELL!! Bruised my rib too. "The first wall climb is so high - as I was pulling myself over the top, I slammed my right-side ribs on the corner of the wall. Ouch! Bruised rib is handleable - I just didn't want to pull a muscle, turn an ankle or get a facial injury. "The electric shock hit me... more... - Spidra Webster from Bookmarklet

"The Scottish Tartans Authority has decreed that refusing to put on underwear beneath a kilt is "childish and unhygienic". It also warned that "going commando" flies in the face of decency. Are we equally ok with sexy maid services or is there a difference enough to make one ok and the other not? - SAM
^^^This^^^ - Half Pint
I think there is a difference. A couple, in fact. The power dynamic is that we live in a culture where men overwhelmingly call the shots. It is overwhelmingly men who objectify women, not the other way around. It's the 21st c. and *still* women get paid less than men for the same kind of work. That's the background here. Look at how the men are dressed. Yes, they're wearing kilts, but... more... - Spidra Webster

Yes, I would consider topless poolboy services more the kind of service you'd see advertised in the back pages of a free paper. Power dynamic is still different, but it is definitely something more overtly about prurience. - Spidra Webster

"Men in kilts are accepted in Europe just as men in kurta pajamas or dhotis are a common sight in India. These are cultural statements and well accepted dress codes but what if tomorrow a male version of saree became the 'in thing', would we women be willing to share our sarees and skirts with the men folk? In Japan, cross dressing is an accepted norm but let us not go down that clichd path. If we women can wear trousers why can't men wear feminine clothes without having their masculinity put into question? They don't have to be transvestites or gay to be in love with exquisite lace. Why do they have to fit into some sort of a slot? Abhishek Bachchan was seen sporting a hair band and Prasad Bidapa, the fashion guru, was featured in the Bangalore Times wearing either a skirt or a sarong. Come to think of it the Indian 'Loongi' could easily pass off as a flowing skirt but it would never be allowed at the workplace. Would it hurt to see a man in a corset when intimate? I'd be horrified... more... - Spidra Webster from Bookmarklet

The original point of clothes was not to stay warm but to draw attention to certain areas. I find something that's covered in an enticing manner far more sexy than mere nakedness. It leaves more to the imagination. - Spidra Webster

"Girls can wear jeans And cut their hair short Wear shirts and boots 'Cause it's OK to be a boy But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading 'Cause you think that being a girl is degrading" - Ragani Harris
100% true. I've always felt that the roots of homophobia are in misogyny. While there are some women who will go "ew" if a guy wears a dress or skirt or whathaveyou, I think a majority of women wouldn't care. I think the liberation really has to come from guys themselves. - Spidra Webster
