The issue with marketing your content isn't the technology of getting it on the 'net. You still have to do the hard graft of building relationships and reputation, so that the dahowletts and scobelizers of this world look at it. - martin english

"Dave, I've asked you this before, but haven't got an answer. Possibly because it would be a dangerous step.... but as a non USA citizen / resident, maybe I can get away with asking it :) If McCain's time as a POW took place under the US Military interrogation protocols currently in place for Guantanamo Bay inmates , would his treatment be within those guidelines or outside them ? In short, is the Tortured Hero doing worse to others ?" - martin english

"Interesting logic. I rememebr some RWDB posting (back in 2004 or 2005) that the reason o'seas wars are unpopular is that mothers don't see the point in risking their sons :) IF that logic is correct, at least the mothers were thinking. Too many people in western society (i'm in Australia) don't have a valid opinion about these matters because they DON'T THINK ABOUT THEM. They votet the way their Mum and dad voted, or the way their local papers have indoctrinated them. This isn't because they're stupid or unaware. It is by choice. They feel they have better things to do; They don't travel by air enough to be annoyed by TSA like stupidities, they know that governments don't have that much control over the economy and their lifestyle anyway. The internet is for the kids homework and banking; real technology is the $2K worth of home theatre. Most people DON'T CARE.about the things you want them to." - martin english

“You guys really want a 'small town' mom as a potential world leader?”
September 3 at 7:44 pm - Link
i just don't get how that is a positive thing - Zee from WeDoCreative
I'm on the fence.. I'll be honest - Kyle Lacy
Isn't she a state Governor? - Shey
Oh Zee. I don't think much of her and I am not voting for the ticket. But let's not attack her as a small town mom. By that way of thinking- McCain is an old coot and Obama is the descendant of a goatherder. I think you can be a mom - maybe even one from a small town- and be a leader. :) - Abby Martin
@Abby, oh by no means am I attacking her for it...but people who have spent most of their lives in a small town don't generally have a worldly outlook. And imo, the potential President of the United States needs to be worldly. - Zee from WeDoCreative
shey - she's been a governor for 22 months, that's it. before than, ran a town roughly the size of your average wal-mart. - Jeremy Toeman
Shey, a very big state with a tiny population... - Kamilah Gill
Zee- fair point! I'm more upset about her lack of experience. And -as you pointed out- the fact she does not have the most worldly of views. She does scare me a little. I think McCain took a big risk that could have paid off- but it backfired. - Abby Martin
"this guy" doesn't want her. she can high-tail it back to the arctic. - ::Kristen::
I would probably prefer a governor over a long time professional Washington politician (Biden). BTW, Interesting bit on small town American in the Guardian today. http://www.guardian.co.uk/comm... - Andrew Leyden
Isn't the point of being conservative that you don't really want change? Meaning...who cares if you're worldly or not? - Rah™
Being a small town mom probably has more advantages than disadvantages. - Chris Lamping
@Chris what do you reckon the advantages are? - Zee from WeDoCreative
Chris - like what? - Jeremy Toeman
It's easy to say that, Chris. What advantages can you think of?? - Kamilah Gill
It would be hard to say in particular, all of our experiences mold our future decisions. One could argue that she would be more down to earth than the typical politician, more tune to what's happening to typical households. That quality may not be important to you, but I think it means something. - Chris Lamping
That is the scariest the scariest thought, evar. No lie. - (teh)Hussein
@Chris those are good qualities of my neighbors, not the leader of arguably the most powerful country on the planet. - Jeremy Toeman
I 2nd Jeremy - Kamilah Gill
You want a career politician who has tried AND FAILED several times to get the top job to have the VP job ? On paper neither VP inspire me. I think a lot of people may relate more to Palin (she's done something besides being a politician) than to Biden. - martin english
@martin so are you saying "the person with tons of experience is not qualified because he ran yet didn't win, but the person with no experience whatsoever is qualified because she might be more relatable"? - Jeremy Toeman
Why not? Back in 1992, being "a man from Hope" was an asset. In 1976, being "a man from Plains" was an asset. What changed? - Ontario Emperor via fftogo
the World. - Zee from WeDoCreative
@Jeremy You must have some pretty good neighbors :-) - Chris Lamping
@Chris hahaha nice! - Jeremy Toeman
Rahsheen, sometimes conservatives DO want change. Remember the "Reagan Revolution." And there are some conservatives (not neo-conservatives) who want to change the abuses of the Bush years...but they're all going Libertarian and Constitution. - Ontario Emperor via fftogo
+1 Ont - Kyle Lacy
@bigtoe - Call me a cynic but Biden has been rejected by people and party, has not had a real job - He was elected to Washington at the earliest age possible. Not that my opinion matters, but Palin has done stuff OUTSIDE politics. - martin english
the reagan revolution wasn't change. that was an effect of 20 years of conservatives courting and kowtowing the fringe religious right. - Faboo Mama
@martin i think that's a very fair point, and the concept of bringing an outsider to the table makes a lot of sense. i just would rather someone more "widely" experienced, like a Jack Welch or someone who's been involved with BIG companies. Her work experience appears to be: graduated college, became a sports reporter, helped with a family fishing business, and partially owned a carwash (which was undisclosed when she ran for governor for some reason). not so ... worldly... - Jeremy Toeman
Not sure that a Jack Welch or a Ross Perot is the best choice for President. When Perot wanted something done, he just up and did it. He didn't have to deal with a legislature. Governors and Senators understand how checks & balances work. (Since 1933, all but 3 presidents have been ex governors or senators; the exceptions are Bush 41 and Ford (both ex House) and Eisenhower.) - Ontario Emperor via fftogo
@Ontario I didn't say they *would* be the best choice, that's ignoring the rest of my argument as to why her inexperience doesn't comfort me... - Jeremy Toeman
Risky business:) - Igor Poltavskiy
I assumed that candidates always chose such characters as their running mates so that, should he (the candidate) get into power, he can be sure in the knowledge that their security team will try *extra* hard to not let him get shot. Am I reading it right? - Slippy Lane

“Question for Zee: What does the other side of the world think about all of this? You are NOT in the USA right?”
September 3 at 8:06 pm - Link
right . And I can't speak for the rest of the world. But put it this way, nearly every single person I have spoken to here wants Obama in but thinks McCain might just slide in... - Zee from WeDoCreative
Why Obama? - Kyle Lacy
Zee, where are you? - Rochelle
Myself, i would be devastated if Obama lost. I think he's the most hopeful change for the positive America has had in decades. - Zee from WeDoCreative
@Rochelle - London. - Zee from WeDoCreative
Zee, I agree. I want Obama, but think that McCain might just pip him. C'mon Obama guys, ask yourself this question: It's all going a little bit too smoothly don't you think? - John Worthington
And Kyle...why? Because of the wordly aspect. Being the president of the united states is far more than just that. It's the most powerful position in the world & frankly controls the world. Of course, whoever it is has to look after home...but a worldly open minded perspective is so important and Obama has it. - Zee from WeDoCreative
I am interested why you think that? I'm not really on one side or the other.. even though I lean more conservative... I just love to hear what non-biased outsiders think - Kyle Lacy
@Kyle you are aware that over the past 8 years international opinion of Americans has *decreased*, correct? - Jeremy Toeman
haha Zee you beat me to it.. I didn't think Obama had much foreign policy.. Maybe he does.. - Kyle Lacy
plus, McCain is old & anyone of that age carries heavy baggage, stubbornness & potential for ill health. - Zee from WeDoCreative
@Jeremy.. I am asking Zee.. I want HIS opinion.. that's all. - Kyle Lacy
From Australia. Believe it or not, many of us aspire to the rhetoric of the US constitution and what it stands for. The Bush presidency has trashed this. And I see that McCain is more of the same. Obama is a break from that, and the Clinton's cynicism... Perhaps the best of a bad lot :) - martin english
@Kyle - then you should probably use email instead of a public forum - Jeremy Toeman
If McCain is elected, American backpackers in Europe will have to leave their Canadian patches sewn on their backpacks and continue to practice saying "eh". - Pete Delucchi
Many people outside of the States that I've met are mad at the US right now. They don't trust us and think we're ignorant imperialists. (I'm an American living abroad.) - sergiooo
@Jeremy, so what? I don't see why international opinion is so important to us. If they were somewhere I would rather live, that would be fine, but at this point like it or not, the U.S. is still the leader... and sometimes you have to lead without looking at the polls. - Bob Stemen
I would agree with the best of a bad lot.. +1 Martin - Kyle Lacy
Maybe I should have Jeremy.. my mistake.. - Kyle Lacy
Hi Bob, would you like us to help you there in Iraq? How's your US backed Government in Georgia going? Want some more help in Afganistan? It's OK to be the leader but you have people left to lead :) - John Worthington
@Bob - seriously? do you have any concept of the importance of international affairs these days? and "being the leader" is utterly and completely irrelevant. what on earth will you do when we are no longer the leader (hint: that day is coming)? - Jeremy Toeman
isolationist anyone? - Kyle Lacy
Bob, I think the POV that the US is the world leader is without doubt part of the problem right now. The fact of the matter is, we're not. We're not the richest, most powerful, most industrialized, or most innovative. These are the countries that we owe money, that we ask to host our military bases, etc. Their opinions of the US *DEFINITELY* matters. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
John, I agree you have to have people to lead, but those people also have to be willing to pull their weight. I would love for the U.S. to be universally loved, but it isn't going to happen. I don't think we asked to be the world's policeman but I think someone has to step up to the task. Almost makes you wish the Soviet Union were still around ;-) - Bob Stemen
Kyle, pretty much the policy for the last 8 years... - Pete Delucchi
@Bob how are we doing as "world's policeman" in Sudan? just curious... - Jeremy Toeman
@Jeremy: ask the Romans, the British, the Japanese... they have all survived the end of an empire (and they were true imperialists... not the faux kind the U.S. is accused of being). the U.S.'s day in the sun will pass, but there is no sense in rushing into the sunset. What will fill the vacuum if we go isolationist and just concern ourselves with what goes on within our borders? - Bob Stemen
I'm gonna plead the A Few Good Men defense here and say 'But you have to ask me nicely'. You're either with us or against us really doesn't cut it :P - John Worthington
Good point Jeremy.. I have always had a problem with how we have treated that part of the world - Kyle Lacy
@Stupid: I agree that other opinions are useful and often valid. I don't advocate telling the entire world to "stick it in their ear", but there is a case to be made for not trying to lead by taking a poll before every decision. - Bob Stemen
I love when people put @Stupid.. lol oohh Tina - Kyle Lacy
@Jeremy: Great question. I think that is a question that should be directed at all U.S. political parties. I don't know why we (or anyone else for that matter) haven't cleaned out that cess pool... - Bob Stemen
Kyle, I'm glad I can make you laugh =D Bob, I agree with the poll bit, but my biggest problem with the US foreign policy is consistency. Currently, we say we're not the world's police and we don't get involved in int'l matters (especially those dealing with human rights violations), except for when those matters involve something we'd really like to have some control over. I see the merits of both isolationism and it's opposite, but I wish we'd just pick one sometimes. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
@Bob re End of an Empire. I agree that it's happening, but going isolationist isn't the solution. Not when we're importing food, energy, and most goods internationally, and making tons of money of our exports of technology and media. The reality is the position of "international leader" has been void since the 60s, and I for one would rather see us strive to reclaim it, not just shrug our shoulders and watch the sun set... - Jeremy Toeman
@Stupid (or @Tina...) I agree with you. I would like to see us take a stronger position with China, N. Korea, Iran, Gaza, Sudan... I am completely opposed to isolationism but there are days when I wish we could just pull back and let the rest of the world fight it out. - Bob Stemen
@Jeremy. it's a tight rope walk. I think isolationism is a casualty of "globalism." That's a good thing from my perspective. I don't mind the U.S. striving to be an international leader (or THE international leader), but we need to recognize that in a world of 6 billion people there are always going to be trying to knock the leader off. It's human nature... look at Microsoft or Wal-mart. Not so long ago, they were new and exciting and different, now they are targets at best and reviled at worst. - Bob Stemen
@Bob complete agreement on knocking off leaders. but in this case I feel there's ample opportunity to excel. as much as any company, group, or nation, people crave leadership. we just haven't seen much really good leadership in a long long time... - Jeremy Toeman
Could Obama come to Australia and show our politicians how to do it properly - we need change now as well. I was bored with this race until I heard Obama's acceptance speech. Very, very moving. - Chris Loft

That's my biggest beef with local TV news. They choose their stories to get ratings, to get ad $$, sure, but that ends up making it almost a fictional program than actual an unbiased stream of info. The net opened that way up, though. I know the dark side. I used to photog and later produce at KIII in Corpus Christi. - Josh Haley
High standard Bloggers=Journalists. Newspapers are finally starting to realise there is value in your audience building up a relationship with the journalist, rather than the newspaper's brand. WSJ has added a number of new blogs post-Murdoch, all with the writer's name prominently featured. Could it be that they finally realise building trust with your readership is better at a personal level? - Cains
The primary reason that we see less focus on "deeper" news stories is due, in large part to the internet. Before, newspapers could cross-subsidize the cost of sending a reporter to far flung regions of the world to do a deep investigation into some story. Now, people can just go to NYTimes.com and look at the one article that they want to read and the paper only gets $$ for the views or clicks on that page. So, as advertising revenue becomes more important, stories will be written to generate hits. - Eric Newman
All journalism in the US is subsidized by advertising, and advertising cares about eyeballs, not what information attracts them. Some people might actually pay or quality information, but we won't know what that's "worth" until the advertising subsidy ends... and it's ending right now. - Dan
As fara as the consumer is concerned, most news / journalism is free (even though its indirectly paid for by them through adverstising &tc). The one lesson that old media has passed on to new media is that free trumps quality (wikipedia &tc) - martin english via twhirl
So when are you going to change what you decide to pay attention to? - Steve Lynch
@Dan, i think we're saying the same thing. now that media can't bundle content together to extract artificially high rents based on circulation (in the case of papers and mags), the amount of money to focus on more in-depth news (the type that wins awards) is disappearing. because the subsidies from advertisers aren't there any more and advertisers don't care about content (like publishers should), we're seeing a lot of "pop" content without any real substance (like Us Weekly, etc). It's really too bad.. - Eric Newman
We get the Journalism that corporations spend their money on. That is mainstream media. real journalism has moved to the web. - Bob Blunk
don't forget the hunger of the american public for crap, pure and unadulterated - Gregory Lent
