Since completely deleting my digital music collection, I've accumulated 3,531 tracks which total 13.6 days of music taking up 36.67 GB of space. This is mostly from ripping a few hundred CDs plus plenty of iTunes purchases. I still have two more boxes of CDs to go.
iTunes will let you make a pdf of your library? That's cool...don't think I can do that in Zune...dunno about WMP.
- Jonas, Leper of FF
Well, other than a few stragglers, the Great Rip-Off is complete. It's taken a long time but that's because I'd go weeks without ripping anything. iTunes reports: 5,226 tracks which total 19.7 days of music taking up 56.90 GB of space. Somehow, I expected more although that's a pretty hefty collection of music.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I admire your hard graft, Young Akiva! I've been meaning to do something like that for...oh...years now.
- Spidra Webster
Yes, that is impressive size (that's what she said!)
- RAPatton

The next step is the more boring: taking the boxes of CDs, alphabetize them, and put them up on the CD shelf. Something tells me this job will get put off for a very, very long time.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Didn't you say Audrey is really really good and loves to take things and put them neatly onto shelves and into cupboards? Let her do it.

Anthony is honored to have just met - and exchanged courtesies with - the President of the United States. And that was, as the kids say, pretty effin’ cool.
you promised us you'd say some dramatic line to him, did ya panic and go with "wussup?"
- Steve C
@Steve: actually no, I cried like a little girl and peed myself, as is my longstanding personal tradition whenever meeting current or former Heads of State. It's simply good protocol; they seem to love it...
- Anthony Citrano

Somehow I believe you, Anthony but still - pics or it didn't happen!
- WorldofHiglet
@WoH: "somehow?" ha, gee thanks! There are no pics of this one, I'm afraid (although there are almost surely pool pics of me at the ropeline early in the night) and believe me it bugs me more than the rest o' yaz. Hopefully @ the next one I get a proper photo op.

:) You LA folk have personal photographers documenting your every move don't you?!? Don't tell me that not true because I saw it on the tv....Anyway, it must have been a very special moment. I hope you didn't cry and pee too much o_O
- WorldofHiglet
Cooler than that Best of Day thread about jock itch?
- Matthew DeVries
@charlie: about my personal moment (A: right here), or about the President coming to LA? (A: just about anywhere; pick your media poison.)
- Anthony Citrano
SO, can you tell us a little more about other than the wetting/crying?
- WorldofHiglet
Even though I can't stand Obama, I have to admit, your getting to meet the president is pretty cool.
- Joey Gibson
@WoH - I don't think I'll get into the blow-by-blow here (there's absolutely nothing of substance anyway.) However, I will almost surely draw on the experience for a future article.
- Anthony Citrano
Well I hope you do deign to share some little details with us sometime. When you can be bothered. In other news, did you see the new YouTube video from the WhiteHouseTV entitled "OMG!!!!! I met Anthony Citrano!!!!! For REALS!!!!!! SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I hear it's going viral....
- WorldofHiglet
WoH: don't make fun o' me! we've already determined I cry easily. ;)

Ooopsie - my bad. I forgot you were such a delicate little flower :)

I had no idea they forced him to get chemically castrated after he admitted he was gay. Disgusting. I hope the government officially apologizes for killing one of the great minds of that generation.
- Bret Taylor

Pretty bad for the "good guys" in WWII, eh? Doubly sad that it (apparently) caused him to commit suicide. So we lost one of the greatest minds in computer science in his early 40s.
- Joel Webber
If the British government doesn't apologize for murdering Turing, they will be no better than the Nazi enemy that threw homosexuals into the gas chambers alongside the Jews and Gypsies. Wasn't he supposed to be on *our* side? The *Law* didn't think so...
- Dennis Jernberg
We're still not very nice to gays. Apologizing for the past makes a statement. Correcting the present makes a difference in people's lives. I hope we do both.
- Andrew Warner
from iPhone
The man was an absolute genius, its a pity he could not live further to expand our horizons of thinking. His abstract computing device called "Turing Machine" is for computer scientists what speed of light is for physicists, an ultimate limit of computation
- thequark
Andrew agree. This is sad. I hope we can "correct the present."
- Rick Cogley
They should apologize for throwing Oscar Wilde in the clink as well.
- Joel Webber
If we follow the line of reasoning where the current government must apologize for all previous governments then it eventually reaches the point of absurdity. Besides how meaningful is an apology on behalf of someone else?
- Adewale Oshineye
Ok, I was being a bit silly about Wilde (there are plenty of things the Victorians could apologize for). But Turing was abused by what could be argued to be the "current" government (or at least political system), and that we still think of as the "good guys" (for wont of a better term) in WWII. And it was only ~50 years ago.

""There is so much solar that all you have to do is invest in the non-recurring cost of more dishes to drive a solar-hydrogen economy at whatever efficiency it happens to sit at. I show in my paper that if you do this you come out cheaper than nuclear and you take up less than 8% of the world's desert area. ... So let's begin now, what are we waiting for?""

We're waiting to extract all the oil it'll take to make the dishes.
- Anthony Citrano
do you by any chance know how they clean those "non-recurring cost" mirrors from dust (=degrading performance)?
- earlyadopter
As far as I can tell they use a lot of water to clean them, which, in the desert, is definitely sub-optimal. What makes a lot more sense is a distributed power grid made up of small photovoltaic systems on all homes and business with sufficient exposure to justify the cost.
- Jason Wehmhoener
Plenty of places in the desert have huge underground aquifers. We'd be screwed here in Phoenix without ours. Also, once the plants are up and running they can condense the existing water out of the atmosphere. I don't think that water is a big obstacle. I agree that pretty much ALL buildings should generate power. I also think that huge solar plants in the Arizona desert make a lot of sense too. I'll even go so far as to call it a national defense issue - it should be a critical priority for the nation.

I'm excited, but my to-do list has suddenly grown. Need to go to the store for pantyhose, OJ, and hand sanitizer. Don't want to infect the hiring manager... Also on the list: remove cat hair from suit, iron shirt.

Yes, the job before my most recent. I enjoy it and I'm good at it, so I'm looking forward to tomorrow. Well, assuming I can clear my nose enough to sleep well tonight...

"Stonehenge, the historic and mysterious monument on the Salisbury Plain in England, has intrigued humans for centuries. While no one is really sure what it was used for or how it was built, one thing we can all agree on is that it’s an incredible feat of ancient engineering. ...I think it's time to put good ol' Dad on the "limited profile" list. .LOLz!
- .LAG liked that
Actually, he wasn't talking about himself, he was referring to what happens when you search for things with "safe search" turned off... but still! This is the LAST thing one wants to see next to one's parent's name on FB!
- Ladybug Heather
Um, yeah. 'Cause I really wanted to see the words "Too much sex" right next to my dad's name and photo! :-)
- Ladybug Heather
Ladybug :-D I think the genius part is the 'images into your head' - the man obviously has an amazing sense of humour! I'd have him as a facebook friend any day :-D
- Sofia @ SoMaFusion
I don't think my Dad would have ever used Facebook, but my Mom is on there, but rarely uses it. Nonetheless, I'm just me, and I don't pretend to be anyone different. I think my Mom has known me long enough to know who and what I am, so here on Facebook, like most everywhere else, I am the same as in real life - not taking it any more seriously than I have to at any given moment.
- Ian May
Yikes.. not sure how I would respond if it was my dad.. Is yeah.. you go Dad.. complete wrong? Hmm maybe Facebook needs a family exclude group for that!!
- Chris Myles
My mom is one of my Facebook friends. As she's my friend in real life, then I feel she should be a friend on Facebook too. My world certainly doesn't revolved around Facebook in any case,.

Laura, if you like anime at all, you should totally watch Last Exile!!

I really want to watch Cowboy Bebop again, but Netflix doesn't even have it!
- Internet's Tad
Original Gundam? The art and animation quality is way below modern standards, but the story is top-notch. Or maybe Escaflowne? (Gorgeous art, amazing soundtrack, story falls apart right at the end, but then again so does LE in my opinion.) ... Also, I second Bebop.
- Andrew C
Oh, and I liked Samurai Champloo a lot, but it depends on what you want - it's certainly smaller scale than LE.
- Andrew C
The last two good anime series I watched was Deathnote and Claymore
- Bryan Lee
What popular titles have you already seen?
- ronin
The Sky Crawlers is another anime involving planes similar in style to Last Exile but I felt it wasn't as good. Its another one of those animes that tries to mix 3D and 2D. Its was too much talk not enough action for me. Fell asleep halfway through it.
- Bryan Lee
Watch Patlabor. TV Series first, then the New Files. You don't have to watch the Original Series (since it's not as good) but if you do, it comes before the TV Series. The movies come last but those are a bit hit or miss.

The paperwork is killer. Hoping you find something that makes this all worth it.

When I went out to L.A. in '07, I spent at least 6 hours a day job searching. I'd look for jobs to apply to in the morning, take a break for lunch and then write up cover letters and tweak my resume in the afternoon. Some days there was more work than on others but, yeah, it was definitely work.
- pea
It's been a while since I've had this particular 'job', but I find it more challenging now than before: the company I worked at was bought and sold 3x while I was there, it makes for quite the paper trail for me to explain. Boo!
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Good luck Tina, it's a drag, but exciting too. ...looking forward to finding out who the lucky winner is!
- Edward Zwart
best wishes on this pursuit. i'm confident you'll find something goodo. :)
- Joe Silence is not dead
I'm hoping so, DS. I'm in the process of revamping my resume and find myself at a crossroads: do I mention clients by name? The fact that our company worked with them is public knowledge so there wouldn't be any disclosure issues, and mentioning them by name will give some nice weight to my job duties. I'm not even sure why I'm waffling on it...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
is there any way you can ask their explicit permission? that would certainly put my mind at rest if i was in your place. dunno if that's going too far or not.
- Joe Silence is not dead
If it's public knowledge than I say mention that you worked with them. I wouldn't ask for persmission. They may say no for some silly reason and then what will you do?
- pea
There's not really a way for me to reliably ask for permission: the main client I worked with is a Fortune 500 company and just the request would get bounced around from department to department for who knows how long. You should've seen the hoops we went through when our mailing address changed...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I think just listing the companies and providing a broad idea of what was entailed wouldn't be an issue. Probably shouldn't get too detailed though. But it really just depends on how you're structuring your resume.
- pea
I hope you find something that pays well that you enjoy, Tina. I'm sorry you're in this position.
- Spidra Webster
I'm up in the air on that one too, Pea. My last 2 positions were very different and I'd take a new job in either field (development or trainer). Both used some similar skills but the duties themselves were very different. Perhaps I'll try both a skills resume and a chronological resume, see which one gets the most bites.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I tweaked my resume for each job I applied for but I basically had two versions of it. Same format, and information, just laid out differently. One focused more on the program monitoring/contract work and one focused on tech support, data management.
- pea
Thanks Abby =) At this point I'm just hoping I can find my last resume: it would be helpful right about now! Combing through data backups as we speak =/
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I'm happy to take a look at it if you like, once you have it updated.
- pea
Hope you get to something you like first and don't get caught doing burgers or something because of timing issues... may that unemployed delay not be applied anymore.
- ElijahBailey-Zu of FF <0,
Unfortunately, I'd have to lie to get hired on to flip burgers =/ The last time I was out of work long enough to apply for store clerk jobs etc I was rejected for all of them because I was over qualified.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Good luck in your search, Tina. Any company would be fortunate to hire you.
- Anne Bouey
Good luck, Tina! I've been there a few times. :-(

Details of Unemployment: Is there a 3-month or 6-month extension available? When I first filed unemployment, I screwed up. I didn't realize there might be extensions. Also, you have to work X months out of Y months after your unemployment ends to get more unemployment.
- Mitchell Tsai
In SC it's 13 weeks with a 13 week extension, but there might be a program for an additional 26 weeks at this point (not sure on that one yet). The working X months out of Y is the amount of time you worked before you were unemployed and not after (at least, that's the way it is here).
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Yep, I was shocked to find that I was "over-qualified" to be the "fry guy" or even a bleeping "banquet server".
- Mathew A. Koeneker
In SC, how do they figure out what to pay you? In CA, I think they pick the highest quarter out of the 3 months ago - 15 months ago (or something like that).
- Mitchell Tsai
Good luck Tina. You're smart AND you've got 'street sense'. A great combination for any company. Don't get discouraged ..... We're all rootin' for ya!
- Charlie Anzman
Mitchell, in SC they take your highest quarter out of the past 18 months, not including the last 3 months of work, and will pay up to 50% of your earnings up to a rather low cap.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
oh - sorry about that. looking for a new job IS a full time task. shout out if we can help in any way

I have gotten used to it, but most of the transition was removing or blocking users that I had followed just because and wasn't really interested in and relegating the chattier people that I found were mostly reshare noise to a list that didn't show on the home feed. I'll see them through FoaF if it is really worth reading.

The video going around yesterday of the baby chicks being ground alive doesn't make me want to eat less meat - many, many more animals are killed in just as horrific conditions during harvest. What it does is make me wish we had food alternatives that took no animal OR plant life.
