Followers are not all that important. It is more rewarding to follow the right people and know how to search twitter for information, as best as you can. Twitter could do with some more metadata for each post.

Robert: True true. Having a large number of followers is beneficial of course for getting help with things, but... Maybe if people start using the saved filters on twitter.com they will realize it is better to reach those who are interested instead of everyone who is not.

I agree, what ever your uses of twitter, it's about quality. Take an example - there's no point in a feed for local news in Bristol UK having followers outside Bristol, as the news would be irrelevant to them - so why would they want to just amass folllowers?? And what value would someone from California into holistic therapy (for example) get from following that news feed anyway?

For me out on the frontier a Wyoming, a nobody really, being able to see Robert Scoble's thoughts, as well as those of Chris Brogan, Guy Kawasaki, and so many other big idea guys, is like being welcome in their home to see what they're reading, watching, listening to, doing... heck they even engage in conversation with me...

I just got more than 2000 followers, now I can also follow more than 2000. And I can tell you it's fun! Of course you can't see all the tweets, but who cares… In this way I have the chance to find interesting people, and when that happens I put their tweet feed in friendfeed. Give it a try...

Angela: well, Twitter itself caused that through the systems they built, the actions they took, and the PR they sought. Ask yourself, why is Oprah's account recommended while Leo Laporte's is not? Twitter WANTS you to miss the two-way nature of things. They don't want you to see Twitter as some place you're going to learn something. They are building an entertainment broadcast network. It's too bad, yes, but that's what is. Which is why I'm here instead of there most of the time.

One last point, by the numbers maybe 7-8% of the US population is using Twitter (per compete.com) it is a mainstream "name" but not a mainstream tool yet.

I found the whole "follow" experience on twitter odd to begin with. Case in point, yesterday I declared I needed to find my toenail clippers and lo & behold the LA Clippers started following me. What are they, a basketball team? I don't even know. Definately a fail. These sites are just a scam. (and now I leave this thread for fear of bothering people)

I make recommendations for Twitter newbies to make connections. What's happened is that my Twitter stream is clogged now with HUNDREDS of tweeps recommending me solely for the purpose of my recommending them! UGH! I don't do that! Many of these tweeps recommend me over and over and over during the day to try to get my attention. They succeed in irritating me! There is still value there... you just need to be able to filter out the crap. More importantly this is nothing new. When there were a few thousand people using Email there was no spam... now the majority of email sent is spam. Filters will become more important than any other tool as usage grows.

there should be a non profit that we all donate to that maintains a list of twitter users who provide value and we can all follow them and only them. signing up for services like this would get you banned from this list. and we can have our own little private twitter experience. it can even segregate the users into different channels for different topics. so you can subscribe to different lists. actually, that's a terrible idea. just throwing it out there. :-)

I highly, highly recommend OSU. I took a cat to med vet and she was mis-diagnosed with cancer. I spent the next six months waiting for "the end" to come. That was in 2002. She live until last year. Cost me $1,000 for her 24 hour stay at med vet. The next year, I had a great dane who took ill and decided to take her to OSU. She was diagnosed with K9 Addison's disease within 45 minutes....

I agree you need seed followers. I just think the way to gain them is by engaging people who interest you. Be proactive. To me,this approach sounds, not disengaged, but not terribly engaging or proactive. I realize I'm an engagement fanatic, but if someone wants me to follow, a witty response to something I've said will lure me in, especially if there's an interesting interchange. Someone who follows me and has a post like you describe, I simply ignore (or block if appropriate for me).

The problem here on FF is that the majority of potential subscribers are in the USA so the site is most active when I'm in bed here in the UK! I think the key to getting subscribers is to engage with others' content and make sure you share interesting things yourself. That way you become a 'valued' member of the community. You have to put some 'work' in though.

The whole idea of "followers" plays to our inherent need of not being alone or feeling important. Gaining followers is like gaining money. You find the excitement of gaining followers and once you are loaded with "followers" so what? It doesn't make you happier, doesn't make you more successful. What's 25 thousand followers if your conversation on twitter is about how many beers you are drinking on happy hour? I find that people who are very zealous about gaining followers have EMPTY conversations.

I think that wraps things up in a nice package, but honestly, I enjoy the conversations most. Well, sure, but I'm thinking back to the days when the listserv was a main mode of discussion. The subscribers were a kind of built in audience that posters to the lists didn't really have to fight for (though list founders had some work to do)--the challenge (and the fun) was in engaging people *despite* not having a handpicked audience. Some self-selection because of list themes, of course, but the audience was there, and anyone could join. Some of the best discussions actually flowed from difference.

Someone should follow because of an affinity for either the subject matter, interests, or attitude someone else shows in other comments. I don't see it as a need, so much as a desire for company, interested in similar pursuits but different viewpoints and perspectives to contribute. OK, I'm throwing my hat in. I've started contributing by linking all my accounts, and finally having a reason to use the share feature of Google Reader. It's awesome to add my voice to the conversation. But after a while, when none of my posts get any likes or comments, it can feel like you have to be super popular to get in on this. For me at least, it's not as important that you follow me as it is that I follow you. You are very likely not to be interested in the stuff in my feed (and that's ok with me, please don't follow me unless you really find my crap, interesting), but you might like me commenting in your threads, which is where I get the most enjoyment from friendfeed..in the conversations on other people's posts. I am not that good of a conversation starter, but I am very good at jumping in when someone else does the starting.

I just don't buy it yet. There is still way too much noise, and I'm not one of those guys with the time to go through posts with 300 (mostly uninteresting) comments. I have to filter extensively to get just a simdgeon of the interesting articles I pull off of GReader with Feedly and comments from the blogs themselves. Friendfeed would be great with Real Life connections, but they are all on Facebook. Friendfeed has a major uphill battle ahead of them, despite their superior interface and technology.

Being pretty new to Twitter (two years but very sporadic until the last few weeks) I hadn't heard of @aplusk until today. Anyhow, I went to try to follow him in the last few hours and none of my attempts were successful. My conclusion: the race is rigged by joint PR effort, they want him to break the million just as he appears on Oprah. Or something like that. I wonder if it has to do with the "aplusk's 1,000,000th follower gets this and that and the other thing" promises that people/organizations like EA are making. By blocking people from unfollowing those accounts, they could be hoping to prevent people from unfollowing right after he hits 1,000,000 and the jockeying to become the "real" 1,000,000th follower that's sure to come.

Mark well I'm sure there could easily be a collaborative effort given the amount of people using the service, and the amount of companies or projects using the firehose, we could easily find new users, and check their followers out, and who they may follow, then give that back to twitter to judge who is "real" or someone. Adding spam watchdog would be easy too since someone already does spam and link checking.

I would have been more impressed with Twitter overall if it had taken the opposite approach and shown us what value there is in following ordinary people who have interesting things to say. Not to mention, if you really do care about how many followers you have you better spend a LOT more time on who you are following. Why? Great input increases the chance of great output. Crappy input increases the chance of crappy output. Followers gravitate to people who provide great output. :-)

Of course, in terms of Augmented Cognition, the interesting thing to me is what is happening IN YOUR BRAIN. How you abstract, conceptualize, and interact with the firehose is unique; and people experience that. There appears to be a "detached intimacy" that seems compelling to others. The numbers are kind of a pre-requisite to a certain kind of experience into which we're all just hurtling headlong; and we don't yet have enough models and variations on that experience to make more progress in this area.

For those who may not know, or haven't noticed, Loic Le Meur is exerting similar uberhuman energy in the context of the Video Firehose. There's a good argument for making the statement that Le Meur is the Scoble of the video firehose. It takes a massive amount of time to "snack" on video, and tools like BloggingHeads.tv 1.4x playback, or 12seconds.tv help that a lot; however, video cannot be sidelined from this explosive expansion of human connectivity and cognition. It's not either-or, it's both. ;-)

The best thing to do is to listen, listen and listen again then ask some questions about what they want for themselves, for the other person and what they are willing to do to make that happen. You can only help them sort out their feelings and get clarity. If you only advocate that they get back together with out each person coming to that conclusion on their own, then eventually, they will feel that they were pushed and not really be willing to work all that hard on the relationship.

I highly recommend the Landmark Forum for anyone, but especially someone breaking up a relationship they know they want (including people who won't speak to their parents/siblings/inlaws). Apple stores can seem intimidating the first few visits. I'm 45 and still felt kind of out of place at first, even though I've used Macs since 1984! While salespeople always greet me, I've felt more like I "fit in" since having a nice conversation w/a guy at the Genius Bar. So advice: teach the salespeople to start discussions w/customers, at least older ones who are probably serious!

Very unlikely that Yahoo would share this information. Transparency has never been Flickr's strong suit. That said, the number is probably very low somewhere in the 3-5% range I'd hazard as a guess. But many of the non Pro accounts are old abandoned accounts. Of active accounts the number would likely be higher and Pro accounts would certainly make up a much larger percentage of the total activity on the site.

I think I counted a statistically relevant number of photos of the most recent randomly uploaded photos to the site and if memory serves correct about 50% of the uploads come from Pro accounts and 50% come from free accounts.

I don't think that Flickr likely generates a meaningful amount of revenue or earnings for Yahoo. The potential has always been there for them to monetize it much more significantly of course but they haven't done the best job at that. It still is an *incredibly* important property though. Probably the most significant asset owned by Yahoo at this point and does represent the largest highly organized collection of photographs in the world.

Thomas is right - of the number of *active* accounts (defined as people who comment and participate, and upload photos expecting to attract comments), most of them are pro. Just look at any discussion thread on the site and they'll all have the "pro" tag. I'm sure that they're dwarfed by the number of inactive accounts, but those inactive accounts don't cost Flickr much money.

Oh and Yahoo completely botched the biggest opportunity to monetize it, which would have been by making it easy for Flickr members to sell prints or stock photography through the site. Flickr could have owned that market, but they never showed any interest in it - instead they farmed it out to third parties. Weird if you ask me.

Now you know why I consider pitches from PR people to be practically spam. I've been a tech journalist for almost 20 years and that attitude has been consistent the whole time. In my experience, PR people just blast out their announcements as widely and thoughtlessly as they can. The exceptions are so few as to be statistically insignificant.

She is noteworthy in the fact that she spoke with you. When I challenge people, they ignore me. But they might be scared they'll wind up on Bad Pitch. They do not understand that responding to questions like wtf is the smartest thing they could do, IMHO.

Kevin: I agree that it was good of her to answer. In fact, I occasionally do find that when I challenge the PR folks as I did with this person, it sometimes leads to constructive dialogue. In one case, I became Twitter pals with one of the pitchers.
