My developing story about importing a Kindle 2 to Europe (was: I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it.)
I just picked up my Kindle 2. And it's charging via USB now. :D - Meryn Stol
Kindle books via iPhone are the way to go, wooo - Daniel J. Pritchett
I don't own an iPhone. Perhaps I'll buy a iPod Touch sometime. - Meryn Stol
It's recognized by OS X as an external drive, so that'll be fine probably. - Meryn Stol
That's how they got me hooked. My wife bought a macbook about a year ago and it came with a free touch. I used the touch more and more until I eventually couldn't stand not being able to use it when out of wifi range so I got the phone. - Daniel J. Pritchett from IM
Ok, this screen is seriously cool. The coolest thing btw is that text remains on the screen when it's powered off. Power seems to be only used for refreshing the screen. A bit like flash memory for screens. - Meryn Stol
I'm always salivating when I'm handling new electronics. I don't think that's entirely healthy. ;) - Meryn Stol
Did you order it shipped to Europe ? Or are you in the colonies ? - ɯɥøq sɐɯoɥʇ
The black leather cover ($29,95 option) is really nice. I feel confident sliding this into a backpack when on the go. - Meryn Stol
I had it ordered by a relative in the US. Her mother took it with her to The Netherlands. - Meryn Stol
I feel really lucky that I could arrange that. - Meryn Stol
Cool, it has a built-in dictionary. :) - Meryn Stol
Highlighting works really easy. - Meryn Stol
This is a really fool-proof interface. It's easier than an iPod. - Meryn Stol
Just turned wireless off. Whispernet is US-only. - Meryn Stol
Can´t say I´m happy about all this love for a proprietary and DRM´ed device but I would like to play with one too:) Most of all I dream of a device with a dual e-ink/lcd colour screen with a webkit browser too. How will you get books on it without whispernet ? You can´t order kindle books from amazon either with a euro creditcard. - ɯɥøq sɐɯoɥʇ
If there's one true drawback of this device, it's the screen size. Even on the lowest font-size, it still has only about half of characters per line compared to a hardcover. - Meryn Stol
I'll have to see how book ordering will go. Kind of an experiment. :) - Meryn Stol
Back-button is nice when you accidentally moved to a wrong page. - Meryn Stol
And I know I know I know I know I know I want you - AJ Batac :)
You people all have way too much disposable money... - Iphigenie
Right now, I think I'd rather have the home-button to the left, and prev-page to the right. - Meryn Stol
Joelle, you won't hear me about home theater or vacations, nor designer clothes. I only spend money on information and information access. - Meryn Stol
OMG. I wonder if I can register. Otherwise I have *kind of* a problem. To put it lightly. *fjkdsg* - Meryn Stol
.. and I need to travel to the US to register it - or something. :| - Meryn Stol
or hack the DRM. - Meryn Stol
"And I know, I know, I know, I know, I know I want you, want you" - Toby Graham
Hmmz... I wonder if this Kindle was purchased as a "gift"... - Meryn Stol
It seems like I need to become a DRM-hacker^HHHHH expert by necessity now. :| - Meryn Stol
why is this your fault? - Vicarbott
*one* thing has gone wrong: The Kindle had to be registered with Amazon *before* it was taken out of the US. - Meryn Stol
Jim, I'm not in the US... I'm using the device outside of the cozy arms of Amazon. - Meryn Stol
Maybe, just maybe, the device does not have to be actually registered to work. If somehow the Amazon store authorizes the DRM-protected books *per device* instead of per account. Maybe the Kindle downloads are specifically prepared for each device you want to use it on. *crosses fingers* - Meryn Stol
Ok, this is probably gonna be a long story... I'm stopping the live-blog for now. I'll update you people in due time. - Meryn Stol
It seems I can register a Kindle device with my own Amazon's account. There's a prompt asking me for a serial number. If indeed the DRM protection is coupled to serial number, than I'm fine. That is, if Amazon lets me register it with my account, which I'm gonna try now... - Meryn Stol
This was a bait and switch thread... I liked this for the Pointer Sisters! - Jason
I just went totally in shock you know. All this cortisol is running through my body, extreme muscle tension... - Meryn Stol
Hmmz, it says it's registered to another account... Maybe that of my relative who bought it for me... Well, "interesting". - Meryn Stol
That sucks - even more evil than I could have imagined, if it is automatically tied to the account that ordered the kindle without consideration that it could be a gift... - Iphigenie
Joelle: No, it can be ordered as gift (I've read that in the manual). Point is that is hasn't been ordered as a gift. But then, it probably would be forbidden to "give" it to a European... Moral of the story (at least for now) that I've *way* rushed my decision. I really don't consider this evil from Amazon, but entirely reasonable. - Meryn Stol
Since there are no books ordered for this Kindle yet, I think it can be arranged to change the registration for another account. I'm not to sure what Amazon support would think of registering this Kindle to a *European* account though. New account with US-postal address would probably be best. - Meryn Stol
The screen saver shows photographs of famous writers, which is kinda nice. It also has fully charged now. - Meryn Stol
you cant be the only person with a kindle in Europe - I would consider changing your amazon account to have an US main address while you sort this. Use your relative's. That way you dont risk not having access to all the books due to licensing issues - Iphigenie
Well at this moment changing my own account won't help me, because the Kindle is (probably) registered to my relative's account. That is, the Kindle registration form informs me that this Kindle has already been registered to some other account, which I figure is probably my relative's. So either I have to use my relative's account or let her open a new account, and ask Amazon support to transfer the registration. - Meryn Stol
I hope Amazon has no rule against two accounts for the same name / shipping address. - Meryn Stol
What I'm glad about is that right now it doesn't seem the Kindle has to be "activated" through Whispernet. *That* would have been bad. The rest is quite manageable I think. I'm only missing some instant gratification now. - Meryn Stol
In the meantime, I can experiment putting some non-DRM books on it or so. - Meryn Stol
