FriendFeed should be faster again. We were had some network issues which caused a lot of slowness this past week, but I think it's fixed now. Let me know if you are still encountering any extreme slowness.
Mainly just had problems with email posting and the bookmarklet. The rest seemed fairly okay.
- Jason Huebel
I've been told that I'm extremely slow much of the time, but I don't think that's what you meant. Thanks for taking care of the issue, Paul.
- Jim Is Not Smart
Meanwhile, Dad's kids with his new wife get what kind of toys?
- Matthew DeVries
Matthew, FriendFeed users have no reason to complain about our toys. And even if we did, bitterness doesn't help.
- Bruce Lewis
FriendFeed is dying for me. In fact. it's just about gone. I use it as a control room and discussion space for my Twitter feed, and a searchable archive. Discussion threads are down about 80 percent. "Likes" are off about 90 percent. There's no real time feed in from Twitter any more. Sad.
- Jay Rosen
Agreed, Jay. My personal life is in a bit of an upheaval right now, which hasn't helped, but the FB acquisition took the wind out of the sails for me. It feels like there's no future, or worse, a future wired up to the "friending" criteria of my Facebook account. I use the services COMPLETELY differently, however. Inbound updates continue, since they're automatic, but this is the first comment I've posted in weeks. Sad, indeed.
- Ken Kennedy
I am using Twitter and FB more and more lately. On the plus side, it's strengthening some real world connections. I'm missing out on the cool new stuff but I think I had gone overboard on that front.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I like FriendFeed, but I happen to find myself using Twitter and IRC more as of late. I guess I've probably just burnt myself and others out, given that I don't seem to have much in the way of compelling content and commentary these days, and that I just don't feel as motivated as I'd like to. :(
- Tyson Key
Thanks for throwing some love over to FF :)
- Susan Beebe
Is there currently an issue with posting from FF to update Facebook -or is Facebook broken after the re-design ? i dont get anything posted to FB anymore which worked fine before yd
- Del_
Hi Paul, I know it has been a while since this post. But over the last 48 hours my Twitter updates have quit showing up in FF. I tried manually refreshing. Then I removed the account so I could just add it back in. When trying to do that I get the following message: "We could not find the given account" I haven't changed anything. Any thoughts on why this is happening? I haven't had any trouble until now. Thanks.
- Mary-Lynn
My Twitter feed is coming into FF much faster now - thanks! *Edit - Blog feed, too!

Question of the day: do you (or would you) take mind\brain enhancing prescription drugs? (provigil-ritalin and such) informal\ non scientific poll for a coming paper on Cognitive Enhancement
why not? if you knew the cognitive advantage it will give you with minimal or non-existent side effects?
- Wildcat
oops, no thanks! :) fortunately I'm in good health and I don't believe in non-existent side effects - Not for now - maybe in my next life I'll take it
- Cynthia
ahh! ok, but the question is not about health but about enhancement (the question presupposes that one is in good health)
- Wildcat
Depends on side effects, can you be sure there will be none....
- Tristan Hambling
OK, but I do believe in not welcome side effects.
- Cynthia
for the purpose of this non official poll assume little \inconsequential or non existent side effects
- Wildcat
then you're trying to have only "yes" answers...
- Cynthia
Cynthia, no, the point of the question (and the coming essay) concerns the ethical\moral questions of mind brain enhancement and their influence on our society- culture and the evolution of human civilization
- Wildcat
OK. Now I got it. My personal answer still is NO, considering where, how, ... I live. I'm satisfied with my brain skills and I don't think I will became a genious. Maybe I recomend for other people (non sarcastic!)
- Cynthia
About health (side-effects etc.): At this moment I'd only take them if it was really important to master some serious task. / Generally: Any time! - Reasons: My most important goal in life, my greatest desire is to harvest knowledge, learn and understand. I want to comprehend reality even if it means that who I am right now would cease to exist en route. I also think that civilisation...
- Alexander Kruel
in general I think we agree, I wonder however concerning:"my greatest desire is to harvest knowledge, learn and understand" do you equate this with happiness ?
- Wildcat
if there were not long term side effects... definitely, yes.
- Anibal M. Astobiza
I would, but I would like to design them myself or in collaboration with others... I have been thinking more however of direct engineering / manipulation of endogenous cannabinoid and opiod systems utilizing implants or nano vectors of sorts...
- pareidoliac
interesting point pareidoliac, given the means of production\design you would directly engineer your mind\brain to attain.. what exactly? a higher state of cognitive functionality? extended perception? cannnabinoids and opiates will definitely alter your state of mind, the questions is of course towards what direction?
- Wildcat
@Wildcat What is happiness? I equate it with satisfaction. I'm not happy if I stop learning. I tried it several times. Too much effort I thought, just played games and doing other leisured activities. But dumb people bug me too much to stay uneducated myself. Something was missing, I wasn't happy. Then I realized something that is better expressed by somebody else, I think you've read it before: http://www.davideagleman.com/descent... (everybody should read this.)
- Alexander Kruel
ahh! yes very good essay indeed and I concur it should be read by everyone.. however sliding down the ladder of evolution is irreversible..no, if all goes well, we will be able to metamorphose into whatever form of life we consider pertinent at the time of transition, if nothing else this could bring us into a larger understanding and empathy of all forms of life, currently inaccessible to us..that would give lots of happiness, I agree
- Wildcat
btw : Nick Bostrom has one of the writings (pdf : http://www.nickbostrom.com/) on the subject, check it out : Cognitive enhancement takes many and diverse forms. Various methods of cognitive enhancement have implications for the near future. At the same time, these technologies raise a range of ethical issues. For example, they interact with notions of authenticity, the good life, and...

- Wildcat
Actually, all we have do to is figure out how to overcome the first-person perspective. How to overcome subjectivity. Once we can share consciousness, we can learn what it means to 'be'. I don't think this is impossible. But the greatest intellect will be the meta-being that encompasses a wide range and variety of perspectives, maybe giving rise to a whole new level of understanding and valuation. I think consciousness is the merger of perception and comprehension.
- Alexander Kruel
metabeing? global brain? AI+human? one mind?
- Wildcat
this discussion always gets way ahead of itself. i think Cynthia makes a good point in that 'mind enhancing' drugs will always be idiosyncratic and messy, with some good effects and some bad effects and some plain weird effects and some effects which are specific to your particular brain and circumstance. talking about 'mind enhancement' in general is a bit silly and only transhumanists would arrange lectures on whether we should 'engineer away boredom' or some such fantasy. stay specific.
- Christopher Harris
Yeah. Well, one mind, but that does not imply a loss of selfhood. As one being is adopted, you adopt all its desires on which its actions are based. The difference is the complete integration of this entities consciousness into the hive or hyperbeing/AI. As humans we think one-dimensional when it comes to goals. But what we do is also the result of a fight of different memes, or wishes...
- Alexander Kruel
@Christopher Harris I ignored 'drugs' and just took general mind-enhancement as topic. All there is to say about drugs is obviously what you and Cynthia mentioned.
- Alexander Kruel
@Alex yes, let's talk in even more abstract terms, that'll help.
- Christopher Harris
I'm sorry, Christopher is right. Forget what I said. About drugs, I agree "that 'mind enhancing' drugs will always be idiosyncratic and messy, with some good effects and some bad effects and some plain weird effects and some effects which are specific to your particular brain and circumstance."
- Alexander Kruel
Christopher, the reality of idiosyncrasy, concerning individual brains notwithstanding, the actual usage of prescription medicine such as Adderall, Ritalin and modafinil (Provigil) and the like for cognitive (some say recreational) enhancement is on the rise (especially among university and college students and prof), shouldn't the issue be taken more seriously?
- Wildcat
Absolutely. I just think talking about specific methods of enhancement makes more sense than talking about enhancement in general. That's an excellent paper btw, enjoyed it very much.
- Christopher Harris
I think brain enhancement is really really important and I try to encourage debate about specific ways to do it. I also get very frustrated with the transhumanist tendency to shoot off into science-fiction at the slightest opportunity.
- Christopher Harris
Definitely agree with you on this, the tendency to slide into tangential and non-productive discourse, takes away from the real issue at play here, namely practical and specific methods of cognitive enhancement, (Iodine\ salt is a quick reference) (this is a very good paper on the current state of affairs: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed... (though from 2008)
- Wildcat
Heh...these drugs would have been science-fiction not long ago! Anyway, you two should check out this article: http://www.newscientist.com/article... - I think that might be the most profound realistic enhancement we could arguably take into account here.
- Alexander Kruel
Ritalin is horrible stuff. Modafinil was much better and just kept me together this time last year when I had chronic insomnia. I haven't taken it since, but would see no reason not to if I was ever in the same situation and needed that particular 'enhancement' to get through a week of work.
- Daniel Swan
The real question is:'Is there some cognitive ability which you need but wouldn't be able to obtain naturally in the reasonable time, and if so, would you accept an extra help, if it's guaranteed there is no hidden catch'? Immortality/longevity might also be an alternative solution here, as well as the joined minds. It depends on the purpose.
- Ashalynd
from fftogo
Ashalynd, would you define 'naturally' in this context, pls?
- Wildcat
After all comments and a good night's sleep, my new oppinion: I should take those drugs if necessary, besides of side effects and all. By 'if necessary' I have a extent list.
- Cynthia
@Cynthia Great, you just won a lot of brownie points :-)
- Alexander Kruel
Alex , play nice.. :-) and Cynthia, care to enumerate the "necessary list" (remember that we do speak of enhancement, not of therapy)
- Wildcat
@Wildcat Huh? I was absolutely serious. She just won a lot of esteem in my opinion. I'm not being sarcastic.
- Alexander Kruel
Ok, no problem.. (I am not very fond of brownies..:-)
- Wildcat
Cognitive enhancement may be defined as the amplification or extension of core capacities of the mind through improvement or augmentation of internal or external information processing systems. (Cognitive Enhancement: Methods, Ethics, Regulatory Challenges Nick Bostrom and Anders Sandberg)
- Wildcat
So turning off sleep doesn't count? After all it gives you a lot more time. What about the use of psychedelic drugs in art? I understand cognitive enhancement using prescription drugs as applied chemistry.
- Alexander Kruel
interesting thread; to answer your original question: yes, i would try them (brain-enhancing drugs) because it's the only way i could truly assess their value (and side-effects).
- james reilly
@james reilly hah...the problem with everything that has to do with your brain is that once you mess up, there's sometimes no way back.
- Alexander Kruel
Normann & Berger article: "So far, all clinical trials of neuroenhancing drugs have either failed or demonstrated only very limited efficacy." I might be interested to test these if there were clear indications that it works. Till then, I think I'll stick to nicotine :-)
- François Dongier
@Alex - I wasn't planning to take them if there was a risk of irreversible brain damage! (not yet anyway, and the upside would have to be really worth it:, lol, :-) Whatever the personal ethics involved, there is the greater, ethical need for harmonising relations between and within human societies and also their relations to the planet. Maybe we're just not smart enough yet. Neuro-enhancement may yield (and maybe not) new ways of thinking about and transcending these problems. It's worth exploring, anyway.
- james reilly
@james reilly What I had in mind are drugs that cause personality change, especially alter your will, rather than 'brain damage'.
- Alexander Kruel
@Wildcat - "naturally" means using brainpower without external stimulants (like growing muscles via exercise). a vague definition though.
- Ashalynd
To me, messing with drugs looks a little bit like hacking around when you can't access the system codes and try to find the backdoors into it anyway... is it really the only approach we have?..
- Ashalynd
Dear washing machine, Thank you for gobbling up a pair of my slacks and then jamming and burning up. We really needed to spend a buttload of money we don't have on replacing you. Please burn in appliance Hell.
December is a great month for appliance failures. I am climbing up into the attic 2-3 times a day to reset the safety heat sensor that disables my furnace. We'll try to have it repaired in January.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Damn. FWIW lighting killed a unit of mine in 2005, had to get it fixed on my own because it was below my insurance deductible
- LANjackal
Seems like appliance failure is popular. My bf's family recently replaced their dryer (which they found out in time was a house fire waiting to happen) and my cousin's washer (grandfathered into her condo despite rules against them) went on the fritz. Maybe a good time for everyone to check their large machinery and clean/repair where needed!
- Heather
Note that MediaRSS images don't show up in the iPhone version of FriendFeed (http://www.friendfeed.com/iphone...), so this hole doesn't apply to that version, just the regular version.
- Stephen Mack
Feature. Tweetmeme's image is no more out of place here than it is on your blog.
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
Bruce, that's fine, but I'd love for FriendFeed to say that. Otherwise I'd love to see them allow us to ignore the tweetmeme button.
- Jesse Stay
How would your blog communicate that certain images should be ignored other than omitting them from the Media RSS feed?
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
Bruce, FriendFeed can ignore any image they like. It's their service.
- Jesse Stay
I don't want FriendFeed to decide which images to include. I want to decide what images to include. It's my feed. (I'm not joking or being contrary. It works the way I think it should work.)
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
Yes, but you could decide which images FriendFeed blocks on FriendFeed. Personally, I don't want web bugs in my stream - I think they should kill them. It opens up for some interesting uses of the site, but I think it's dangerous.
- Jesse Stay
That would work until you clicked through to the blog post. The problem has to be solved at the browser end.
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
I don't mind the Tweetmeme button on my blog. I mind it on FriendFeed. That's beside the point though - the point is web bugs can be embedded by anyone in a post to FriendFeed, posting cookies, tracking IPs, and possibly more. If that's what FriendFeed wants I'm fine with it - it seems like an issue though.
- Jesse Stay
I'm sure it was a conscious decision. They know how to make their own thumbnails.
- Bruce Lewis
from fftogo
Jesse: I don't think there is any security hole here. Certainly any external pieces of media can track you but it can't do anything serious like, for example, access FriendFeed cookies. Disabling third-party cookies solves your problem of being tracked across the web.
- Benjamin Golub
The Tweetmeme plugin for wordpress allows you to put the image at the bottom of your RSS posts. I keep it at the top on the actual blog and at the bottom for RSS so I can avoid this problem.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Isn't this problem on you, the content publisher's side? You told FriendFeed to read a mediaRSS-enabled feed that pointed to images that you don't control. You introduced the ostensible third-party tracking on your own site, embedded that tracking into your feed, and had FriendFeed import the feed. I'd rather have FriendFeed import the feed as accurately as possible and have you remove...
- Mark Trapp
Mark, no, that problem is FriendFeed's. If they don't want 3rd-party images that can dynamically produce content, set cookies, etc. on their users' computers they need to stop that practice. It doesn't sound like they want that though, so it sounds like it's no one's problem in that case. I was just raising what I thought was an issue. If they don't think it's an issue then I guess it's fair game.
- Jesse Stay
Embedding offsite images from RSS feeds is not unusual -- for example, Google Reader does the same. As others have mentioned, if this is a concern for you, there are browser config options that will address it across all sites.
- Paul Buchheit
Paul, thanks - that's fine. I just wanted to be sure the FriendFeed team was okay with it. Now to come up with some cool technologies that utilize that. :-)
- Jesse Stay
it is important for publishers and users to be aware of these technical implications. this is a good feature for some purposes, and hadn't been apparent to me before, thanks for pointing it out
- Mike Chelen
iit's a moot point since there aren't any friendfeed users any more
- SuezanneC Baskerville
About that whole idea of disallowing 3rd party images in friendfeed posts: That might make it impossible for some people to have any images displaying with their posts if their images are not hosted on the same domain as their blog, which would be the case with Blogger's *.blogspot.com blogs. Plus, even if you whitelist the domains Google uses for Blogger image hosting, it still creates...

I really enjoyed her TED talk when it became available. Then my wife's mother suffered a stroke, and my wife got a copy of "Stroke of Insight"... her work, along with her personal understanding, are helping people in important ways that wouldn't have been possible but for her own personal struggle and recovery.

Do guys ever like "regular" girls? Or do they always have to be tarted and slutted out to hell? I like looking at nice guys, but they can be in sweater vests and bowties, not waxed, shiny, and in speedos.
I do. Maybe I'm jaded from growing up in SoCal. I've always been around those "Hawt Chicks" who, well, *yawn* THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME TO ME. Give me character or unconventional beauty any day!
- Anna Haro
i was attracted to (and still am attracted to) a "normal" girl. she dresses like a guy most of the time (occasionally will wear a 3/4 length skirt or dress) and i think i've seen my wife in full makeup TWICE in 13+ years since we first met. sometimes she wears lipstick if there's a party, otherwise the overwhelming majority of the time she's got nothing on her face. i don't think she's...

- Joe Silence is not Santa
i have always found 'regular' girls in 'everyday attire to be attractive. Anyway, the looks don't necessarily match personality or sexual prowess
- Ian May
I like regular girls. I may lust after the hotties, but give me a nerdy girl any day. I married a nerd. (Don't tell her I admitted it, but her IQ is slightly higher than mine. Mine is 164.)
- Jason Huebel
@Jason: the nerdy girls ARE the hotties! (i married a mathematician.)
- Joe Silence is not Santa
I find emotional warmth attractive, above all. I have to admit, I like a gal who is down-to-earth but, when necessary, can really turn herself out (I have a glam side, too).
- T. Brent, technopeasant
hoho, I like how Anna blames it on SoCal. =)
- Andrew C
That's my experience, Andrew. :-) I grew up in an area where all the girls wanted/tried to look like Pamela Anderson. NO THANKS.
- Anna Haro
I married a librarian, endogamy FTW! Sneak-up hot is so much more fun than self-regarding know-i'm-hot.
- Pete
FWIW, I know a lot of librarians that are tarted and slutted all to hell. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) Just sayin' that "librarian" does not necessary equal "regular girl."
- Sarah G.
Indeed not, Sarah, though in my experience the two sets are pretty close. Then again, I haven't been to an AALL conference...
- Pete
And this ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, is why I love Derrick so.
- MASTER OF THE OBVIOUS
I'd much rather a woman think like a porn star than look like a porn star. I'd much rather see the attractive "regular" women I see naked, but most of them won't let me see them naked, so I make due with the women who will. If that makes sense.
- josh neff, geek at large
I like 'normal' women, but my definition of 'normal' is other peoples' 'weird', or maybe just 'different'. And DERRICK! Don't say you don't like the tarts, I can't count how many times I've seen some oiled-up superhunk* scroll down c/o your feed. You know I aint lyin! *Other then Derricks self portraits.
- Will Higgins™
I'm a jeans, t-shirt, no make-up & ponytail kinda girl, and I'm married, so that means at least one guy does ;o)
- Mellissa Claus
I wouldn't use "regular" to describe myself, but I definitely don't tart or slut more than 1x per 5 years. There are guys who are into that, but in my experience it's a minority of guys. That works, really, because it seems like the majority of women wear makeup, etc.
- Lo is not learning
I think most men have a knee-jerk (and I'm using the word "knee" here *very* loosely) response to "tarted up" women, where we are reacting to the symbols and signifiers of "sexy." rather than to the person herself (hence "sex object" and all that). When it comes to "regular" girls, tastes diverge a bit, but I think all but the most deluded and juvenile men also find a certain large segment of the "regular" female population attractive, too.
- s t e v e
Also, Derrick, lemme remind you of some of your previous posts here: the women on FF who get comments on their photos ranging from appreciative to Neanderthal are almost never looking phony, dressed to kill, etc. They are just looking pretty or confident or vulnerable or kind or some other "normal" thing that men respond to (appropriately or not).
- s t e v e
Great Feed. I think regular girls are the best..
- ★ Soner Gönül
Also, D., I too would rather appreciate Josh in his vest and bow tie than oiled up in a Speedo.
- s t e v e
Steve, I think that's a universal feeling. Nobody wants to see me in a Speedo, oiled or otherwise.
- josh neff, geek at large
Hmm. 'Librarians of South Beach; sign, signifier, signiFIED! A post-structural dis-course on sexuality and attraction'

Josh, you in a speedo would not be as scary and some speedos I've seen.

I love Tina Fey, but when she plays me in the movie of my life, I am going to tell her to gain 30 lbs.
- laura x
The best looking girls wake up looking that way.
- Brad Greer
laura: In Tina Fey's defense, it's possible that she doesn't really have a choice. My wife (yes, a librarian; yes, smarter than I am; yes, doesn't own high heels) is 5'10" or 5'11" and weighs 115lb--because that's how her metabolism works. [Addendum: I don't follow celebrity news much OR read the NYTimes, so didn't realize that Fey admitted losing 30lbs deliberately--see laura x below.]
- Walt Crawford
What Brad said! Some of the best looking women I have seen have little to no make-up or other enhancements. Keep it simple stupid... ;)
- JA Castillo
A woman who looks like a stripper is probably going to catch my eye, but that's about it and only temporary. We had a party once where we had strippers. I got to film them "backstage" and just kinda hang out with a bunch of naked women. It was pretty awesome, but as we got to talking, I started to forget to stare at their junk.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
I personally prefer regular girls. Yeah sure a lot of slutty girls look good, but at the end of the day I find myself looking more at a regular girl with some nice curves.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
I don't know any regular girls. All the women I know are amazing in a lot of different ways.
- DJF
i thought you guys all liked regular girls who "tarted up" for you at home? or if you know that librarian is "tarted up" underneath...?
- Lisa
Oooo, a tarted up librarian? I'm all for that!
- Jason Huebel
I don't know if I like this anti-tarty vein. And whoever was commenting on women's photos on FF and the response they got, um, you're wrong. The "myspace photo" is alive and well on FF. You got it with "vulnerable" doe eyes through teh eyebrows cleavage shots. lol. Do you think the anti-tart sentiment isn't about high maintenance women, but more about a fear of women's sexuality?
- anna sauce
To clarify- men feel safe when women hide their sexiness underneath a cardigan and horned-rim glasses?
- anna sauce
I really doubt it, anna. Men feel safe when women hide their intelligence behind pancake makeup and fuck me pumps is more like it.
- Spidra Webster
Other men, maybe. Smart, strong women are a serious turn-on for me. I like a woman who can stand her ground.
- Jason Huebel
Of course there are exceptions. And probably more here on FF than other places. But as a generalization? yeah.
- Spidra Webster
I wonder if you take a hot woman, who is a librarian, and shows off her curves. Would you guys not be interested because... she has a healthy sense of her own worth? LOL.
- anna sauce
I don't like it when women hide their sexiness or their intelligence. Wearing it on the outside, whether you're in a short skirt & fishnets or a baggy T-shirt & jeans. is really, really, really attractive.
- josh neff, geek at large
I mean, some people are just hot, and not slutty per se, but defnitely have a rack, etc. Like Selma Hayek. Would anyone tell her to take out her contacts and put on a cardigan, so they can marry her... lol. We're putting too much stock in looks.
- anna sauce
It's interesting how many people (mostly guys) say here (and in other similar threads) that they're into women who are smart, practical, and "normal", and not so into the major makeup, flirty, "tarted up" type. However, when a picture is posted here that is like there, there is no shortage of drooling in the comments.
- Rochelle
What's the adage... you f** your mistress, you marry your wife?
- anna sauce
Few things turn me on more than witty repartee, like I'm in a 30s screwball comedy or something.
- T. Brent, technopeasant
Rochelle: On the other hand, there's a whole bunch of us out here who you've never see drool over any picture in the comments, whether it's a "hot" woman or otherwise. Out of a million people on FF, I'm certainly ready to believe there are thousands of "guys" looking for hot pictures to drool over and also thousands of men who prefer women in all their complexities.
- Walt Crawford
Like I said, a "slut" or hot chick or whatever might catch my eye just like an expensive sports car might catch my eye...but that doesn't mean I really want one.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Walt, I'm talking about people I interact with on FF and posts I've seen show up in my feed. I've never encountered you before on FF, so I have no idea what your commenting history is.
- Rochelle
Coming from Montreal, people would often rave about how beautiful Montreal women are... but I've also heard it said that your 'average' Montreal girl (whatever that is) knows how to dress in a way that flatters their particular body type.
- T. Brent, technopeasant
I find a woman beautiful based on a range of factors and I do not prejudge them into categories like 'hot girl' and 'normal'.
- Johnny Worthington
WHY ARE WE FORGETTING ABOUT THE MEN IN SWEATER VESTS AND BOW TIES? #furious
- Derrick
Derrick... I can appreciate a well groomed man as well...
- Johnny Worthington
Oh yes, there are men that like intelligent women. Then you end up as the *tech-support gal* .. :)
- Citronella
The thing about "hot" girls is that you can invest hundreds of hours in knowing how to look good to please others (and I'm drawing a distinction from ladies who do it for themselves, like many FF women), but you're still going to be old someday anyway. If you invest that time in knowing stuff, or being entertaining, you'll be the hot one with time.
- Lo is not learning
Yes I prefer girls with a healthy dose of fiber.
- Rodfather
This is a tricky question, actually. Obviously, I see where D is going, but I would argue that a girl not being tarted up does not make her "regular." Many of ff's most spectacularly crush-worthy ladies are not tarted up at all, and many of the guys on here notice quite often how fabulous these "regular" girls are. :)
- Bren -- Not Grinchy
Whatever they're wearing, I like intensity in a guy... probably why I like hanging around poets and Highlanders so much.
- T. Brent, technopeasant
I much prefer "regular" girls. I can't stand gigantic fake boobs, I'm not one for women with tattoos and trout pouts make my dick run for cover.
- Joey Gibson
Sure, some guys like regular girls. No, plain janes do not get more action nor asked on more dates. (Simple answer). And for some women (whom i admire) the makeup application that makes them look dynamite takes mere minutes, and they can hold a conversation quite easily - so equating makeup/tarted (?) with shallow is just an easy out. tarted up doesnt cancel out your worth as an intelligent human, for either sex. So, ernk to the turn this convo has taken.
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
I like regular girls. I like slutty girls. but most of all, I like punk rock girls. they punk rock my world.
- Morgan Haley
Im not a tart - I have neither the figure, the wardrobe nor the makeup skills to enhance my looks. But I dont trash those who do. I consider myself pretty regular - plain and chunky, on the higher side of smart. I just think this question (Do guys ever like regular girls") is too much like "do guys ever like chocolate?". The answer is some of them, some of the time, and it all depends on the chocolate.
- Archangel ωαřмaiden
I like a variety. Give me "vanilla", give me fetish and everything in between.
- ‘-.-’ Tutivillus Grift
lol I also notice tHat in the spectrum of tart vs regular, we've conveniently left out the ugly girl, for whom the only real answer is to have an awesome personality that overrides face (or interesting text that overrides posted pictures).

You know what? I wanted to like this thread. But you're all playing so facilely with stereotypes that don't mean jack shit that it's a pointless conversation. I'm a "regular girl", and a "slut" and a "tart", and a "librarian" -- what the HELL are you actually talking about, other than objectifying women while pretending to be enlightened about it?
- Jenica
Jenica, I think you're absolutely right. I've been trying to make that kind of point--at least it's been in the back of my head--but I've been doing it very, very, very badly.

Nice work Jenica. File this under "threads I wish I hadn't posted in"

I prefer to subjectify women. That is to say: SUBJECT THEM TO MY AWESOMENESS WOAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Akiva Moskovitz
I agree that words have a lot of baggage associated with them, but it'd be pretty hard to have this conversation without words. Is there another word besides "tart" that more adequately expresses the nuances that you feel should be included in such a discussion? Or is it just flat out wrong to talk about women period? (please read that in a non-confrontational tone, I don't mean to fight, just curious & happy to be ignored)
- Lo is not learning
"other than objectifying women while pretending to be enlightened about it" - Whedonification, or see also Sorkinification.
- Andrew C
Jenica, what do you find attractive in men? And don't answer with anything that would objectify them.
- Kenton
I don't think we're all playing with the stereotypes; or rather, I don't think we're all playing *along* with the stereotypes. Some of us (OK, me) are tweaking the stereotypes with our responses (except for the being married to a librarian part. Librarians are pretty neat, regardless of where they fall on the sexual attractiveness scale.)
- cecily
Hmmm. Being one who's in an open relationship, and a Kink? I get to deal with all types from all walks in many situations. I'm pretty desensitized to a lot of "normal" turn-ons, so someone who tries to stand out will get my attention - so will someone who tries to blend in. That's why I appreciate the entire spectrum. And yes! I love women who want me to objectify them, literally!

"Sometimes, the longer you journey toward a goal, the more it appears to recede into the distance. The experience is common to both alpine mountaineers and scientific researchers—especially, it seems, to those involved in neuroscience. It's a burgeoning field, with new discoveries at every turn. Lately much of its focus has been on the arts, and a spate of best-selling books has hit the marketplace with the promise of unraveling the secret of music's enduring power. However, an abundance of brain scans, experimental studies and case histories has, in the end, failed to answer certain vital questions: What is music? Where can we find it in the brain? Why does it do what it does to us?"

"Lord Nicholas Stern, the British economist who produced an influential report on the potential costs of global warming, is strongly urging the British public to go vegetarian in order to slow the accumulation of heat-trapping gases in our atmosphere. Said Stern: “Meat is a wasteful use of water and creates a lot of greenhouse gases. It puts enormous pressure on the world’s resources. A vegetarian diet is better” [The Times]. Stern also suggested that climate change legislation that makes it more expensive to generate greenhouse gases could soon force meat producers to raise prices, which might lower consumption."

Yes. Was one for 5 years, so I could probably do it again.
- Shevonne
@Shevonne What was the reason for you to become vegetarian in the first place? When I was 13 I became vegetarian for reasons as the "Golden Rule" states them. But now days I'm pretty much vegetarian for emotional reasons. I couldn't imagine just eating meat now for less than existential reasons. It just appears barbarian to me on a gut level.
- Alexander Kruel
@Eric Logan Yeah me too, but there's currently really nothing besides game theory that could support it. There is just no prove right now that following such a train of thought leads to peace, happiness and victory. Though I suspect that it is a superior behavior pattern because it allows you to cooparate and thus become predominant towards hostile beings which follow the principle that might makes right.
- Alexander Kruel
Alexander, I thought I couldn't (cheese) but then I just did it. It's weird, it turned out to be easy.

Probably not. Giving up having a car was easy compared to the prospect of a life without bacon.

I am thinking about it now (I don't have a car, and my kids don't mind) but to convince them not to eat meat at all (especially my 17 y o son) is not that easy. Need to find more yummy recipes first :)

- Nikhil Dandekar
@Michael Bravo Who are you talking to? Why wouldn't you be allowed to push what you are in favor of? I never said it is the right thing to do or that you should become vegetarian. I would indeed love to see that happening though.
- Alexander Kruel
@Ashalynd You shouldn't have to convince someone. Either you are an emotional person with compassion or not. If it never came to your mind to stop eating meat with 17, I see not much hope. You could still become vegetarian for other reasons as stated above though, but that's indeed hard.
- Alexander Kruel
nope, you're all screwed... I went from an old gas guzzler to an economy car every light bulb in my home is either a CF or an LED, all my appliances are energy star compliant, I only use my washer and dryer during off hours and every thing in my house that uses water has been replaced or retrofitted for decreased consumption. After all that, I think I am going to draw the line at double cheese burgers.

Isn't that like naive peace? To be peaceful you have to restrain from war? I don't wear anything that is made out of animals but I don't see why there is only a black & white approach to this? I'm pro animal experiments too. Even eating less meat makes a difference.
- Alexander Kruel
What is wrong with 'restraining from war'? It worked for Gandhi :)
- Ashalynd
I don't want to go vegetarian, but I am eating less meat and more fruit and vegetables. Many of us have it all wrong - eat huge portions of meat, with the vegetables a poor afterthought. It doesn't have to be that way. Properly prepared and cooked (or raw) vegetables can be as tasty and delicious as any meat - just in a different way. Each should compliment the other.
- Ian May
The low-meat diet, with the meat content reduced and veggies correspondingly increased, has plenty of benefits, both in terms of health and efficient use of resources. (somebody's got to eat the stuff that we can't eat, like grass, or the stuff that we won't eat, like pig food) It's much easier to convince somebody to reduce their meat intake than to take away their bacon.
- Wirehead
Ask somebody what they had for dinner, or what's for dinner tonight. Most people will name a meat. They don't even count vegetables as "dinner." When that changes to meat and 2 vegs, people will be eating a sensible amount of meat.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Wirehead, that is what I am alluding to myself. m9m, my point exactly. I do tend to say I had, for example, roast chicken, mashed potatoes, and green beans, rather than just chicken. I guess I was fortunate growing up in a time, and place, with a mother that didn't buy TV dinners. She made everything from fresh ingredients. She wasn't a gourmet cook, but it was wholesome, and not full of fat or salt.
- Ian May
In my case, I would reply something like "Mashed potatoes, stewed tomatoes, and green beans" and then would be asked "But what MEAT?" I eat regular American restaurant food when I go out, but I don't cook meat at home.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
the true problem about this - you have to make whole planet stopping eating meat quite simultaneously, otherwise it has interesting turn around: you had it quit, but rest of planet doesn't. And what then? Especially if you find yourself rather in minority? Try to remove meat from certain countries ratio, and you will get angry men ready to take guns into their hands... so much talk about restraining peace - and most probably you will end up close to war :-/
- A.T.
@A.T., then we could as well give up altogether. What do you think will happen if you curb economic growth in China and thus deprive 1200 million people from the soon to be achieved wealth they expected?
- Alexander Kruel
Also, the "what if I stop doing things but others dont?" question is silly. Start with changes that you can accept and do them, whether others do them or not. They might do other things (the chinese and indians).Turn devices off, change your lighting, cycle more, walk more, do energy intensive hobbies less (or quit them altogether), eat less meat (and chose wisely when you do,...

@iphigenie I'm sorry but I'm from *church* "there are no silly questions" ... I do ask myself questions before I do (minus cases where too much thinking is dangerous as in "clear and present danger"), but... if you (and rest of Western world) tomorrow stops using many things, same day e.g. China will get enormous economical and other-development boost, while you will sit in dark and eat cabbages... sorry, not my choice - neither going tough choices myself only nor filling Chinese top management pockets
- A.T.
Always ask questions, I agree, silly or not. But there's no need to sit in the dark eating cabbages - but why not think of impact and sustainability when making decisions, and when the compromise is tolerable choose sustainable? That won't give a crazy advantage to china, because if you choose local properly made high quality goods over cheap disposable goods, for example, you're feeding your local economy

I started working on a data-tree style notetaking application recently. Which similar web application (Wridea, Google Notebook, Evernote, and the like) are you guys using, and what do you love/hate most about that application?
Much less graphical. Mine has no Flash, no fancy graphics and sounds. Just lets you organize whatever you wish to organize into nodes and subs (like the tree on the left of Windows Explorer).. Most mindmapping and note-taking applications have too much detail, too many options and actions (imho). So I'm looking for simpler and easier-to-use applications. Got any?

I have been using Treepad for this: see screenshot of how I am using it with. http://www.imagebam.com/image... .Also similar ones available are treedbnotes pro, rightnote, allmynotes organizer pro. @Mehmet Yeah, I love GTasks, too. Except it doesn't use the entire window, just a small portion of it. I don't like that, really. Do you use Google Tasks on a daily basis, or have a better option that syncs with your phone?

Cool tip, thanks. But then again, I'm writing my own todo-notetaking-datatree application, and I'm hoping to have it published within the week.

@Necmetting, by wiki of links I meant something like this. Link = http://imgur.com/IbezS.png Something like Treepad, but this could be a variation. I havent used online note taking apps so far because I need very fast indexing and fast retrieval and would prefer all data stored on desktop, with prohbably syncs to the cloud at a sequence and interval I determine manually.

Here is a recap of feature list I would like - freeform database, full-text search, auto-completion of search results (autosuggest), prominent "Find" button provided as part of toolbar, and the whole thing could be like a spreadsheet with rows of data with only 1 column = "data" instead of a tree-data format, something like a scrolling table of entries that match the current dataset as found by the entry in the Find textbox.
- TrafficBug
Very nice, useful and applicable ideas, TrafficBug. Except, how would you enter more than one paragraph of text (say, something like a "note" about an entry)? When you say freeform database, do you mean being able to add new columns to entries (separately), or a more relaxed way of saving the data/text?
- Necmettin
I made this video of a bookmarking app I use: http://www.screentoaster.com/watch... I especially like how the Find text box is bringing up results as I type (the result dataset keeps changing as I type). @necmettin I have used/tested all of the ones you mention, plus MindMeister, XMind (non-browser), Todoist, RTM, TwitDone yesterday (it actually has some interesting ideas), and even FriendFeed as a To-Do/notes app (as a private Group). None do everything I'd want them to be truly useful, GoogleNotes got close but was missing some things before Google archived the project (clipping was fast/great, as was manual clip sorting; no child nodes though).

@necmetin BTW, have you looked into #Wordpress' P2 Theme for note threading? http://p2demo.wordpress.com/ It's only missing edit of posts/replies, which is probably turned on for the admin user, will have to do my own install to test. For clipping, just use the WP PressThis bookmarklet?!

Checking out all the options Alex listed (and thanks, Alex, for that), yet I still do not feel like I found *the* todo/notes application.
