Makes perfect sense. Wave is a technology that's still in development. If the bugs and quirks can be ironed out it's very suitable for Enterprise situations. A company like Novell is well placed to steer that development.

I think enterprises will "get" Wave. As far as business is concerned (other than marketing) Twitter, FF are toys. Wave is a potential business tool that can solve real problems. That is why most Twitter and FF fan boys don't get it.

I like to imagine there are one or two secret undersea mid-Atlantic or mid-Pacific datacenters, buried along the transoceanic fiber optic cables and powered by tides or geothermals or what have you. I suppose maintenance access would be horrendous, though.

I think that twitter aren't even thinking to sell to anyone, they raised fund this year, their scalability pb are less for day to days the service is more stable then in the past, and the search service is promising there is no rason to sell. and to go a step further I think that they will make investement, acquire some startup related to stock analysis they will bring real time fianance analysis, at least I will do if I had a chair in twitter.

Seems like Google would be gun-shy after Jaiku, anyway. Plus, Twitter would be stale for over a year while it gets ported to Google's infrastructure, which would kill any momentum it has this year. These deals always sound so based in fantasyland.

That's one of the many things I like about FriendFeed: how many people follow you isn't displayed at the top level. I hope that doesn't change. I think a lot of people on Twitter (and other social networks) only obsess over their followers/friends just because everyone else can see it. I also think that's why a lot of people don't like FriendFeed... you've got to give substance to get substance.

NEW (February 25): Of course two weeks ago I started auto following again. Why? Cause Direct Messaging on Twitter is broken. But here on friendfeed I have a different philosophy. I am using lists to follow specific people and segregate those out from other people. So I can keep the geeks who talk tech separate from my brother, for instance.

This would have more credibility now Robert if you protested the capping of manual follows at 2000 until you get followers of that number and can move on now. You got to autofollow with abandon; today normal people are capped on manual follows. Unfair.

Maybe that is because the uptake on FriendFeed isn't as high as Twitter. Its a chicken and egg situation, though I figure I will persevere on with using FriendFeed

@ddmcd Between the hide function and being selective in my subscriptions, I've found FriendFeed to be a lot less noisy than Twitter. That's subjective, though, and always comes back to personal preference. Personally, I'm glad to see people like Jeremiah giving FriendFeed a shot.

Dennis: you have GOT to be kidding! I'm watching both and there's 200x more noise on Twitter. I really wonder what you mean by noise. You should turn off "friend-of-a-friend" here on friendfeed and see if that changes your opinion. But, Jeremiah, there's a lot of people on twitter. techCrunch says that about 2% of its traffic comes from twitter.

Robert - I'm just lazy I guess. I get tired of having to continually tweek tools to make them useful. I'm sure you are right but I view Friendfeed similarly to Facebook -- do I really want to get into another fine-tuning exercise? Also, keep in mind that I am only a "c-list" blogger -- given my low volumes of connections via various channels I can afford to use cross-channel filtering as opposed to within-channel filtering. PS _ thanks for following me on Friendfeed anyway!

dennis: I think it's not noise at all, but it's signal. Tim O'Reilly doesn't like friendfeed because he says the comments distract him and he doesn't have time for it. Twitter just lets you broadcast and be done with it. No conversations necessary (and if you try you'll piss everyone off anyway). I think we should be able to hide the comments for users like you. :-)

Bjorn: as much as I often am in conflict with PR people, I totally reject your statement here. These people put up with a lot so that those engineers at Google don't have to deal with constantly taking care of press people. In particular, I find that most professional PR people don't spin me at all, they just try to get me in touch with who I want to talk with.

At least you know what you are giving away. Facebook has the potential to sweep the rest of the ID systems away. OpenID is in the worst situation, because it has no killer app exclusive to the system. Yahoo's ID system has MyBlogLog, which looks very much like their bid to get in the webID game, Google has… well, they're Google, and Facebook has the huge mass of people with less tech...

Informative article, thanks for posting this. Would love to see some studies comparing neuronal activity of book reading to reading on the web. I was glad to see some mention of different forms of literacy - much needed in this sphere of discourse. Based on my own behavior I know most of my time spent on the internet is reading and writing, and since I work remotely that's usually 6-8 hours a day, 5-6 days a week. I can't say if it's affected my offline reading habits, though.

From a buzz perspective, what is interesting is that most of the comments are along the lines of "It sucks that the activation is down, but it won't affect my interest in getting a 3G" Nobody seems to take a negative position other than "I might wait a couple days to get an iPhone"

I find the enthusiasm of media funny. Media should better direct our country's foreign policy than scoring some brownie points on photoshop disasters. How does it matter if one missile failed. What matters is what we are going to do to stop missile proliferation without using our own missile. Scoring such brownie points are kid's play and not media's.

One of the biggest things I like about Scoble is, through all the noise on here, he somehow still checks out what his subscribers are up to. Almost as soon as I subscribed to him, he subscribes back. Seems like he sees value in people of all sizes, figuratively speaking.

I met Scoble before I had any real notion of who he was/what his reputation was, so I'll always be influenced by my first impression of him just being a super nice dude. I also think a lot of the negative attitudes about him stem from his tendency to not completely adhere to the concept that the notable voices in the crowd are supposed to exercise all sorts of discretion before saying "This is the coolest thing ever," but I think we can all relate to geeking out about something new, cool and different.

I totally agree. I am a nobody and Scoble is subscribed to me. He's one who truly believes in conversing and engaging with the crowd, and is not selective in friendfeeding. I truly learnt a great deal from him. As I see it, some folks are however more concern about maintaining popularity than being truly social..

Scoble, don't get me wrong. I *love* your attitude. The typical straight-laced, dry tech commentary gets on my nerves most of the time. I relate much more to (and feel that tech lends itself to) the approach of: "This new thing could be the biggest deal ever, or it could be nothing at all, but let's all get stoked about it, discover as much as we can, and push it to its limits. If it doesn't work out, something newer and cooler will be out next week anyway."

Adam, I completely agree. There's an argument to be made that as the gatekeepers of this geeky mess to the rest of the normal humans out there, that there has to be some discretion shown so that they'll believe us when we say "No, seriously, this is actually going to change the world." But ultimately, there has to be someone saying "Screw it, let's give it a shot." I'm glad it's Scoble.

In my opinion, the best use for a blogroll is for a _short_ list of _related_ blogs that the reader can hit in order to get more information on the topic. The "600 blogs I read every day" doesn't seem to me to be the best use of a blogroll.

I recently dropped the blogroll on my blog. No one ever bothered clicking the links. What people do click are the links in my blog posts (yes, it does still happen). The blogs to which I link regularly in my blog posts are a much better barometer of the ones I follow than my blogroll ever was. I really didn't keep the blogroll up to date.

Hmm, regardless of clicks, SEO's understand that a blogroll link is a vote in Google, or at least indexing priority. If you really like someone, you'll tell Google about their blog by blogrolling them. I never nofollow those.

I read blogs mostly in Google Reader. When I'm on a blog, I'm focused on the content rather than the sidebar. I like the blog roll concept, but it would reach a broader audience if it moved to the main column of content. For example, instead of showing a Last.fm widget in my sidebar, I automated a weekly post that shows my top artists from the prior week as a regular blog post. http://bit.ly/4rQvZU

A commenter added a valuable suggestion: "It would seem to me that a tool that extracted the blog links from your posts, continually updating the top X number based on your posts, would be more useful than a blog roll. That would keep the blog roll up to date and reflect the sites you are talking about."

I only use the Blogroll widget on Wordpress to link to a few close contacts. I certainly don't continuously update my blogroll with the blogs I find interesting, but that'd probably be a better use. I have seen a fair few blogs start doing "Blog of the Week" where they have an image (usually a screenshot of the site) linking to the author's current favourite blog. Could that be considered the step up from the 'traditional' blogroll?
