My student worker and night manager just spontaneously thought I said "fish shaking" instead of "fist shaking". I of course had to tell them all about y'all and the Cod of Ethics. I may be getting a rubber fish for Christmas...
Oklahoma senator: Tornado aid “totally different” from Sandy aid - Sen. James Inhofe, a Republican, voted against federal funding for Hurricane Sandy victims - Salon http://www.salon.com/2013...
Oh look, a politician who also happens to be a massive hypocrite without a clue. Nothing new to see here, move along.
- MoTO #TeamMonique
I believe that Inhofe is also the guy who stood before the Senate a few years ago and railed on and on about CFL bulbs being made in China, so promoting their use as an conservation measure in the US was a huge sinister conspiracy to undermine US security. (Of course, I'm sure his close ties to the fossil fuel industry in Oklahoma and elsewhere had nothing to do with his position.)

And I said, "What about Weekend at Bernie's?" She said, "I think I remember the film, and as I recall, I think we both freakin' hated it" and I said, "Well then, that's one thing we got."

Curtis, who habitually mishandles the expensive, fragile electronic device containing all of her contacts and important personal information, expressed unbridled enthusiasm over the impending arrival of her newborn baby. In addition to having outright shattered her iPhone on multiple occasions, Curtis has improbably managed to drop it on the sidewalk nearly 10 times in the last five weeks alone, and said she has become increasingly excited about the prospect of motherhood.

OMG, I had a client on a white paper I was writing and I was on a conference call getting an idea of what area they wanted to cover. They asked for "thought leadership" like two dozen times. We ended the call and asked them for actual information on a future call.
- Eric - seven eleven
Aw yeah...leave it to the German to not pussy foot around with passive aggressive substitutions for 'thought leader.' Tell him not to say it and he just does it anyway. *fist bump* :D
- Sarah G.
Yeah, praise the German for being forthright, no possible issues there.
- Pete #TeamMonique
Forthright and stubborn! WWII could have been prevented if someone just told Germany to go ahead and invade Poland. "WHAT? Fuck you, you invade Poland. It's almost Oktoberfest. We got shit to do here."

The Harold is widely regarded as the foundation of long form scenic style improv. [...] Despite its vast influence on contemporary performance the Harold has been largely ignored by the scholarly community and thusly pushed to the margins. Therefore, this study will tell the story of the Harold, beginning with the development of improvisational theatre and the tensions and evolutions that led to the Harold's creation at iO, up to its use in contemporary comedic filmmaking. Furthermore, I will be examining the ways in which the Harold has helped transform American comedy by reshaping it to follow the principles and philosophy of the Harold."

Have just invented the "consultancy pact" (along the lines of single folks's marriage pacts) where if neither you nor a friend is successful/satisfied in your respective fields by the time you're X years old, you start a consulting firm together.

That was such a great feature on yesterday's Fresh Air. I'm upset, because I totally forgot to watch his American Masters last night; I'll have to catch it whenever they re-air it.

"Even as Apple became the nation's most profitable technology company, it avoided billions in taxes in the United States and around the world through a web of subsidiaries so complex it spanned continents and went beyond anything most experts had ever seen, Congressional investigators disclosed on Monday."
- Andrew C (✓)
from Bookmarklet
"Congressional investigators found that some of Apple's subsidiaries had no employees and were largely run by top officials from the company's headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. But by officially locating them in places like Ireland, Apple was able to, in effect, make them stateless -- exempt from taxes, record-keeping laws and the need for the subsidiaries to even file tax returns anywhere in the world."
- Andrew C (✓)
" "There is a technical term economists like to use for behavior like this," said Edward Kleinbard, a law professor at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and a former staff director at the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation. "Unbelievable chutzpah.""
- Andrew C (✓)
" Atop Apple's offshore network is a subsidiary named Apple Operations International, which is incorporated in Ireland -- where Apple had negotiated a special corporate tax rate of 2 percent or less in recent years -- but keeps its bank accounts and records in the United States and holds board meetings in California. Because the United States bases residency on where companies are...

"Apple Operations International has not filed a tax return in Ireland, the United States or any other country over the last five years. It had income of $30 billion between 2009 and 2012. By shuttling revenue between international subsidiaries, Apple was able largely to sidestep paying taxes, Congressional investigators said. "

Totally minor procedure (I'd tell you about it except it's TMI). But I love how serious it sounds due to that word "surgery."
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo

Thanks all! My visit is done. Bah. Turns out it wasn't what my Primary Care Physician thought, and the general surgery PA couldn't correct it in-office with the minor procedure I expected. So I will need an actual bit of surgery after all if I want to fix this. Hmmm.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
from iPhone
Friar, you KNOW that "no such thing as TMI on FF" is a challenge, right? :D
- Hieronymous Boosh
I'm sorry it wasn't in-office eligible. I hope it all turns out okay.
- Spidra Webster
Thanks all. It's minor, so I will be okay whether I do it or not. But now it's going to be a decision I have to think about.

If you get quotes from a reputable place, I'll do it for half.
- Brian Johns
If they can install adamantium claws while they've got you open, the super-powers are totally worth it!
- Spidra Webster
Sparky, I'll go with your cut-rate surgical alternative if you install the claws that Spidra mentioned. Also do you do LASIK? You can just use a cheese grater and a penlight to avoid having to pay for expensive lasers.

Let me read up on those procedures, but sure, why not! What could possibly go wrong?
- Brian Johns
Nothing could possibly go wrong. You're not going to be using any anesthetic, are you? I'd rather watch you perform the procedures so I'll know how to do it myself next time.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
You can save on cost by not having sterile instruments too!
- Janet:#TeamMonique
You have to make some sacrifices for prices this low. If you're going be all stuck up about it then just go to your fancy-shmantzy "licensed" doctor, ok?
- Brian Johns
Sparky, no no, I'm not stuck up. Whatever corners you need to cut, just slash them. I don't need "instruments."
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo

Cheap grain alcohol for the anesthesia should do! It will double as a blood thinner for those pesky post op pulmonary emboli.
- Janet:#TeamMonique
hope "Cheap grain alcohol" comment was meant as a joke, for it may cause serious damage in conjunction with many post-op medications. Best wishes to Stephen! (Much later try the Japanese whisky, Hibiki, to celebrate :-)
- Adriano
I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner, hope you are on the road to recovery now? How are you feeling today?
- Halil
Hi Halil, thanks for the concern! I haven't had my consult with the surgeon yet, so I don't know if I will do the surgery or not. It's a minor and not uncommon condition (albeit highly personal and with a disgusting #iam12-worthy name), and it's not painful currently, so all is well.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
from iPhone
Okay, just finished the surgical consult. I'm going to do this. Will be done in June, simple procedure but i will be unconscious, and I'll be unable to run for a week (boooo). I was pleased that the surgeon called me "ridiculously healthy," though.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo

Glad you are going to a real doctor! Though we really could hook you up if something gets cancelled! *winks*

Uh oh. Mom is talking to head gardener next door. Dad has been trying all day to get her attention. Now he's mowing the law. He's sort of claimed her as his friend. (Even though he's now also buddies with Manuel at the garden center who gave him some red aparagus from his garden this morning.) Will he let this aggression stand?
Oh, I'd say the vacuum is indifferent/subject to the systemic biases of culture creation/distribution. Unless you mean the rule 30 which represents the one-dimensional binary cellular automaton rule introduced by Stephen Wolfram in 1983 (which I am very excited to learn about, so thank you).
- Meg V. Meg
That sounds better than the rule 30 to which I refer, which is "there are no girls on the internet". :(
- Mark Trapp
Um, Mark, have you BEEN on the Internet lately?
- laura x
from BuddyFeed
Oh, I'm not attesting to its descriptive (or normative!) power; just providing it as a counter-example, from the same list of rules that rule 34 comes from, to culture (or really, the subset of culture that created the list) abhorring a vacuum. While a porn variety vacuum is prohibited, an internet gender vacuum is codified.
- Mark Trapp
Sure sure, and that's the rule 30 I was responding to, initially. The vacuum is a vacuum. What fills it up is culture. Culture creation/distribution is subject to systemic biases.
