"The key to tracking any signal, whether it be cellular or radiowave signals, is something called trilateration. In order for trilateration to be used effectively, your phone needs to be picking up on at least 3 satellites – 4, or more, is better. Your GPS-enabled phone receives a constantly streaming signal, from the satellites, containing information such as the time the signal was sent and the orbital information of the satellite. Based on that, your phone’s GPS receiver calculates your location in latitude and longitude. It can also calculate your current speed, based on the time between readings and distance covered."

The simple answer is that GPS satellites can't track mobile phones since they are only broadcasting
- Michael Hart
You're correct. The wording of the article title is wrong.

Streaming Netflix movies: There's Roku, XBOX 360, special BluRay players... What else is out there that streams Netflix and which is more preferable and why?
add the PS3 to the list using third party apps like PlayOn. Mine works perfectly fine. If I ever encounter an issue its usually because of the NF servers.
- Carlos Ayala
Thanks Carlos. I'm not a PlayStation (or xbox) kind of guy, but that is good to know. I was about to get a Roku back in the day but didn't. Now that I am in the market for a BluRay player and now that I see there are some that stream Netflix themselves, I figure maybe that would be the way to go, rather than getting a separate unit as well as a BluRay player.
- Josh Haley
the only issue with what i stated above is that I need one of computers to be up and act as a middle man/media server.
- Carlos Ayala
So a PC streams the Netflix, then you stream from the PC to the PS3?
- Josh Haley
yes, sort of. you never see the content on your PC. it just makes the connection to the PS3 and streams it there. and i do this wirelessly.
- Carlos Ayala
also, one of my colleagues recently picked up the Samsung BD-P2500 (w/Netflix functionality) and loves it. i have no experience with the product.
- Carlos Ayala
I use the 360 but I understand the Roku Box may be better if you don't already have a 360. Its cheaper, and can connect to Amazon as well.
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
slightly off topic but still related i extend functionality by using Tversity and now a NAS too. Currently I've got a 4TB WD Sharespace talking to my PS3 and acting as a media server (with no configuration at all it will streaming any media on it...Pictures, Videos, Music, Movies, etc),,no computer needed, all DLNA.
- Carlos Ayala
oh yeah and PS3 Media Server on the Mac.
- Carlos Ayala
Hmm, that's interesting, Carlos. My new TV is "DLNA" capable but I never figured how I would use it if ever. So a quick search on the Sharespace cube shows me that it's kinda like a drobo NAS, and all you have to do is put media on it and plug it into a DLNA capable tv?
- Josh Haley
A drobo is not a NAS....its a mutant external hard drive. :)
- Carlos Ayala
yes...your tv will speak to the Sharespace native-ly. not sure about the UI...but a search may produce the setup involved.
- Carlos Ayala
its 4tb (comes in 8 and 12TB flavors too) and its attached to the network where anything on the network can use it. this as opposed to the drobo that pushes $1k and does none of these things without getting crafty. keep in mind that all these devices are for storage first.
- Carlos Ayala
Josh also consider the Apple TV hacked to run Boxee. Very cheap media interface to your HT setup and it talks to Netflix as well as Hulu.
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
Thanks Gunny. I already set up a Vista PC running xbmc, BUT it can't do Hulu and Netflix at this point.
- Josh Haley
Also MS added Netflix support to Windows Media Center, very recently.
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
I'm eyeing a new ION based Nettop box for my living room. Especially if it can be hackintoshed.
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
yeah keep your eyes open i am sure that there are several inexpensive ways to get the streams that you want to your TV...being that its got DLNA functionality built in, it may be something that you can leverage.
- Carlos Ayala
Boxee for Windows. Finally! Also, I just heard that Windows Media Center just started supporting Netflix streaming. That's already part of my Vista PC although I have never used it. Hmm.
- Josh Haley
doing some digging it looks like the DLNA interface on the TV you have is pretty straight forward. You can run Playon ON your PC (it costs about 35 bucks I think) and Stream Netflix to the TV. Then use the TV's Built in Software to play all your other media. Pretty neat.
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
My Sony TV should have gone this route instead of the crappy Bravia Media Link box they sell for $200 bucks that can only connect to Amazon and Youtube.
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
Wow, the options are really opening up here. Thanks, Gunny.
- Josh Haley
@Gunny has the right idea...this is what i was looking at and verifying it with your model. you should simply be able to run a DMS/DLNA server/software on your PC and have it talk to your TV.
- Carlos Ayala
You can also get Playon as a free Demo to make sure it works before you plunk down any cash
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
yes you can definitely demo PlayON....give me a few and I will check on coupons for you...they are always sending me stuff.
- Carlos Ayala
My TV has an ethernet port. I assume DLNA happens there? If I set it up that way, I don;t need to have my htpc in the living room at all, huh?
- Josh Haley
correct. It looks like you just need an ethernet drop or at the very leasta wireless bridge.
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
yes....it all runs on your network. also...check this out...this is what i was talking about in terms of software http://www.nero.com/enu... i have no experience with this but as you can see firms are jumping on the idea.
- Carlos Ayala
Hey Josh. I'm biased as I head up PR for Roku, but I can tell you that while we support Netflix and Amazon Video On Demand today, we're opening up the platform later this year to bring several new content partners on board. My point. Roku player brings over 50,000 titles to the TV today and will only get better going forward.
- Brian Jaquet
Brian, any chance of Hulu on Roku, or does Hulu still have their head shoved firmly up their rectal cavity. Also any chance of a DLNA componet?
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
Hey Gunny, Our focus is on delivering the best content to the TV and clearly Hulu, as an aggregator of content, offers tremendous value to customers. We have our aim on working with the best and biggest content owners out there. I can't be more specific at this time, unfortunately, but stay tuned!
- Brian Jaquet
Brian, thanks for the disclosure and the info. Now I have two people on Friendfeed who want to but can't tell me details about their respective products that may or may not come out later this year. But in both cases, I was assured that I would be blown away. :)
- Josh Haley
If you want a Blu-ray player as well, the samsung ones do a good job at streaming netflix. you can check out a shootout nilay did for pics and videos of the different interfaces - http://www.engadget.com/2009... One important note about PlayOn, at least until the web streaming interface upgrades to HD, you won't get any, since that's where it's streaming from.
- Richard Lawler
Using my 2 week free trial of Netflix tonight on the windows media center that happened to be on my vista pc (the xbmc one). So far the controls blow, the audio is not surround and the video quality is just beneath DVD. But it did begin playing Matrix Reload in about 7 seconds. Hmmm.
- Josh Haley
PQ through the xbox / tivo / roku / samsung / lg players is noticeably better than the web browser / silverlight video you're getting through windows media center, it's still sub-DVD on SD feeds, but there's far less tearing and it's sharper.
- Richard Lawler
Netflix - xbox360 and windows media.Windows Media is like a tivo. You can record shows and watch them later. AND hook up your laptop to your tv and stream netflix there. It's super convenient
- @CrystalinaB
Crystalina, you have GOT to stop being so cute AND geeky. It's just...too...much!
- Josh Haley
@Josh What don't you like about the controls?
- Michael Hart
Michael, the remote I have is a MCE remote, which, using Media Center you would think would just...work. But, the only way to pause and stop, etc is to use the mouse part of the remote and clumsily bring the cursor over to a very small control pop-up window. Not acceptable for long term use imo.
- Josh Haley
That is definitely not by-design. I did see one other user reporting a similar issue. What kind of htpc do you have?
- Michael Hart
Running Vista with whatever media center version came with it. (can't check right now). Got a MCE remote, cheap from Hong Kong, but has supposedly all of the "official" buttons.
- Josh Haley
Josh, the remote is probably the issue. Probably using some keyboard mapping vs. the official codes. Double-checked with the media center gang and they haven't heard of any remotes not working, they all use the same remote codes, etc. I have a spare lying around if you want to contact me at netflix.com (mhart).
- Michael Hart
I will look into the keyboard mapping thing, Michael. If I can't get it working right I'll give you a holler. Thank you for the offer.
- Josh Haley
Microsoft needs either a simple extender stack it can cheaply bundle with CE devices or a Mac Mini form factor if they're even going to WMC connected to TVs.
- Michael Hart
Good post from Dare detailing the good and bad on the new FB streams API, including why API developers should stress apparent minutiae like proper application of HTTP status codes.

Analyst notes how cable industry has it all wrong trying to beat the Internet vs. embracing its technologies. I'd also add that they're probably wasting time trying to replicate Hulu vs. making TV more like boxee.
- Michael Hart
James, thanks. Something Jandy said in an earlier post reminded me that I need to update my spreadsheet. I find it useful to keep track since I watch so many movies. Rod, I do too, but it drives me nuts that I can't half star movies on Netflix. What if I like it more than 3 and less than 4??
- Joe Pierce
Netflix is great to use to keep track of what you've viewed by your ratings.
- Mark Philpot
Jandy, I bet you are right, mine is a huge mess right now. I need to clean it up. Mark. What about movies not on DVD, or not available on Netflix?
- Joe Pierce
How about Flixster? That seems popular.
- Rodfather
Not on DVD or Netflix? I'm honestly struggling to think of what might fall into that category...
- Mark Philpot
I'll have to look into it, but I'll never give up the spreadsheet. I like having a local copy I can keep backed up myself. I have online trust issues with data loss.
- Joe Pierce
Mark, Killer Workout comes to mind immediately.
- Joe Pierce
Agreed. I'm trying to figure out a good way to export my Netflix ratings. I think it's possible via their API, I just need a weekend to figure it out.
- Mark Philpot
I've been begging Netflix for half-starred ratings for years. No joy. My spreadsheet has multiple worksheets (films seen, ranked lists by year and country of origin), and it's pretty much complete back to 1996. Mark, there are TONS of films that have never been released on DVD. Just watch TCM for a few days, and you're sure to see some. Not to mention foreign films that have never been released on R1 DVD, films that have been hung up in legal battles forever, etc.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
I go in streaks every few months diving into IMDb and rating. No local files or extra data, however.
- Michael W. May
Does IMDB allow you to track ratings/viewings? (edit -- Think Michael just answered that)
- Mark Philpot
Off to go build my local database of films I've seen and for the ones I really like hyperlinking them to the copies I store on my home network, all legally of course I own the DVD's.
- Jimminy
What I really want is a "GoodReads" type site for music & movies.
- Mark Philpot
Even have an rss for it. Goto My Movies (top bar), drop down view Vote History
- Michael W. May
from twhirl
I'm making a note to check out Flixter and the rating system on IMDB. Though I'm a little scared of IMDB, those forums are definitely a no visit zone for me.
- Joe Pierce
I ignore the forums and usually the reviews too. I'm up to 1456 ratings, btw. I think I may have rated a fifth of the films I've seen. It's pretty daunting once you get started and realize how much time has been spent in front of a screen. http://www.imdb.com/mymovie...
- Michael W. May
The IMDb forums are a fantastic source for wankery, though. :) I haven't used their My Movies section for a long time. It used to be fairly annoying to navigate, though...has it improved?
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Not for movies, that list would be miles long. I do keep a spreadsheet of the bands i've seen, dates, where I saw them, and who I saw them with.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Walled garden question -- Need to figure out how to export Netflix ratings to IMDB
- Mark Philpot
The Netflix API provides access to recent ratings and requests for any specific movie ratings, but not a full history. Full histories via the API are under development..
- Michael Hart
Joe, I've been doing this since 2006. I keep a spreadsheet of all "new" movies I've seen (any movie that I've never personally seen before) which tracks the name, date watched, and my personal rating. It's not super geeky or anything but it comes in really handy when I decide to do a best of list at the end of the year.
- Mark Wilson
I don`t see any reason to do that, have u got any reason?
- امیر؟
I use Netflix for that. I've had it since 2001
- Shevonne
I used to keep the ticket stubs but that was just adding to my clutter. So now I just take a photo of whatever movie I'm watching. http://www.flickr.com/photos... Only problem with that is that people are aware of my sometimes embarrassing movie choices in real-time. ouch.
