Reporting in snow is fun. I'll miss the mix of attending meditations and services, then exploring programming/coding. That's my DC life.
Nice R tutorial - recommend it if you're looking for an intro from the very beginning. http://www.cyclismo.org/tutoria...
@mpacatte Ha, it's weird being further south. Can't decide if the obscenely warm Dec. weather here makes me delighted or long for Chicago.
Hear kitchen back home is almost remodeled. Excited to cook w/new appliances, and glad construction was while I was gone.
(cont.) but that doesn't count the upcoming ind. study w/ @richgor. But knowing I *could* be graduating now is exciting/frightening.
@cheekygeeky Thanks much!
Oooh, cool! Think they'll meet before I leave on 12/18? New DC @WordPress Meetup group: http://www.meetup.com/ (via @greglinch)
And a weekend project is to start digging into R, so if anyone knows of great online intro/tutorials, please send 'em along.
Three benefits of information visualization -- why it's helpful and how it works: http://blogs.harvardbusiness.org/sviokla... (via @MacDivaONA, @derekwillis)
On the way back from last National Press Club taco + drink night. :( Oh, how far we've come from hanging out at Nevin's in Evanston.
@mattmansfield is using Fetch to demo FTPing for a Wordpress install. First time I've seen the running dog in a long while.
Looking good! RT @eyeseast Hey folks, @newshour just redesigned. Check it out http://www.pbs.org/newshour/ Thoughts? (please RT also)
In other news, my phone charger seems to have wandered away somewhere between the newsroom and the house. That can't be good.
@NYTimesSkimmer Best part is that it doesn't force you to only read snippets, but provides many points of entry to the in-depth we love.
@GEOpdx I'm a journalism student interested in learning more about #wigis, @amandahstaub sent me your way.
@AnthonyDB I would say modern times demand a cultural shift. It's not the demise of journalism, but demise of complacency and status quo.
@greglinch Well, does it count if @derekwillis is in the newsroom? Because it's final data project marathon on Tues. Opportunity knocks!
Great discussion on different types of viz at @flowingdata http://flowingdata.com/2009...
@mattmansfield I WILL be back to haunt DC. Still around until 12/18 though, tourism and media visits await post-quarter.
Just discovered @newswithnumbers Another good viz site for the blogroll (Apologies for tweet flurry, lots to catch up on today!)
@greglinch @mattmansfield Yes, cupcakes were very gourmet! Only slightly softened the blow of it being the last class. Which is sad.
@selfmadepsyche I'm at @MedillSchool and just started seriously diving into programming this quarter, using it for CAR and data viz
Women represent! RT @selfmadepsyche Girls, if you're still in school and getting your geek on in the realm of journalism, I'd like to talk!
@amandahstaub Glad you enjoyed it! A good example of the random awesome yet educational finds online! What do you do w/GIS?
@amandahstaub ooh, I should check those out. I'm a complete newbie, just starting to get into it, looking from the journalism perspective.
Was looking for this last week! RT @macloo If you need to make some quick XML docs - CSV to XML converter (free): http://www.creativyst.com/cgi-bin...
Glad to see @nytimes Article/Times Skimmer featured more prominently. Long overdue, IMO. http://www.nytimes.com/timessk... (via @mrandre)
@stevebuttry Would also hold up Everyblock and gen. govt reporting as examples, but maybe the latter is too distinctly American?
And in reaction to that, @vodkacookbook just started following me. And just in time for finals!
