As I told Mahrendra, I could make my numbers look a lot better by reducing my feed by thousands of followers, and thereby increasing my ratio.
- Louis Gray
My "respect ratio" is 29. Do I get a prize?
- Call me Bronco
And as I replied to Louis, anyone can game Twitter, and he doesn't need to anyway. :)
- Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Nice post Mahrendra. I have noticed people with >50k followers on 6/8 lists and those with 500 followers on 20 lists. When I've checked them out, all those accounts with the massive follower counts were basically using Twitter as a broadcast medium. Thanks for the post.
- Jim Connolly
Thank you, Jim. The phenomenon you describe was one of the things that led me to investigate this further. :)
- Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
One thing I really like about social media companies like LinkedIn and Twitter is that they are rendering defunct all those sales/mgmt folks whose only claim to fame is that they have a Rolodex
But the Rolodex is assumed to carry with it relationships which can't be replaced by software. So while the comment may be "he has a big Rolodex", it means he also has the relationships and experience to go with it.
- Louis Gray
@Louis , I am not so sure that is the case in many instances. Take exec. recruiters for instances do they really have long-drawn relationships with a ton of people. I would say they have a few of those but in many cases they may just have had a cursory meeting or two. Same goes for PR. As an example - a start-up in early 2000s had not way of getting to a blogger/news paper without hiring a PR agency. Now PR agencies are not all that important anymore...

I think name-dropping is the way we all show love in this business - I name-dropped both of you, after-all ;-)

The Scoble curve: "Love it. Love love it. Love, love, love it. It's dead." You could set your iphone according to Scoble's fickle predictability.
- Dawn
you are the last battle he has to win to declare the "great conquest of friendfeed"
- ffcode
The Scoble curve.. :) But it's true, you know. First it was twitter all the way. Then Facebook. Then friendfeed was the be all-end all. Then twitter again. (And not forgetting real-time search all the way!) Now FF is dead... And every time I find myself shaking my head and thinking So what?!
- Adrian Scicluna
There is no way I could use Twitter lists like Google Reader. I just see those completely differently. I gotta say I enjoy seeing the Friendfeeders engage when Scoble does say something 'controversial.' I enjoy the debate over tool use and application, we can all learn from it.
- Holly Rae
Shame on you socialites. We just need some drama. How about bots looking over your shoulder and pitching you amazon products. Guess Google had fun with this in email already, but I'm having fun with it using social media. Where do you folks meaure social metrics (influence, etc)? I need to do the same for comparitive click though/purchase rates

Right on, Louis. I realized earlier that I forgot the "it's personally offended me" part of the downward curve. :)
- Dawn
No, Dawn...You're wrong...the Scoble curve is "Love it. Love love it. Love, love, love it. My brother's joined. It's dead."
- Alex Scoble
You seem to understand that RSS is still important, especially for filtering, etc. While Robert serves a purpose (like getting the FF guys to pop in and say everything is going to be ok here), his stream is far less likely to teach me anything.
- beersage
sounds more like he's bi-polar, or schizophrenic?
- sofarsoShawn
I just like poking Louis because he is usually early on things. This time he isn't, though. But I'm not deleting my Google account. Just noticing that he's sharing the same kind of things I am, albeit slower. We'll debate this someday soon and we'll all have a good laugh. Personally I've noticed the same shift in attention away from Google Reader that I've noticed in shift away from FriendFeed. Which is why it's interesting to fight about.
- Robert Scoble
Overheard... ("I just like poking Louis because he is early on things")
- Jesse Stay
I'd rather be right then early. That said, Robert, I followed you to Google Reader, the link blog and Facebook. If I am doing this slower, it's both due to speed of discovery and not being as always on as I would like to portray.
- Louis Gray
Louis: that's cool. In all of these cases is there really anything close to "right" or "wrong?" Not really. But there is "early" to a trend or "late." That's cool, I'm glad to be out in front again on something. For the past two years I was chasing your exhaust here on FriendFeed. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Looks like I was right all along with Facebook ;-)
- Jesse Stay
Heh. But I can see this, the "invite so-and-so to gmail" links are way too prominent.
- Stephen Mack
since it is not an sign up by invite what do they keep invites for? just for people who don't have gmail? whats the purpose of you have 50 invites left?
- testbeta
"Thousands of Facebook users who have been unable to access their accounts for nearly a week and a half now are now seeing their profiles restored--but some data related to recent profile updates may have been lost." Bad week for clouds.

Louis, thanks for the tip, but I don't see the point if it is already pretty easy to "follow" people for Google Reader users. Isn't this link as easy to give someone has a twitter account: http://www.google.com/reader...
- Phillip Stewart
Phil, my guidance is always to provide your content wherever people want to be. If people prefer Twitter, give them your content on Twitter. The new rules for conversation and marketing is be where they want you to be, not where you tell them to.
- Louis Gray
I like that Louis. I may quote you on that.
- tomit
Another option is to use the tag feature. Each tag you have in Reader you can expose as a separate feed. That feed is also PubSubHubbub enabled. So you could only retweet when you apply that tag to an item.
- Brett Slatkin
Not sure if reader2twitter supports those tag feed URLs though.
- Brett Slatkin
Why not just do "Send to Twitter" if you're going to do it on a post-by-post basis?
- Jesse Stay
Depends on how many clicks you like to make? I dunno
- Brett Slatkin
@phillip you can just sync share which has note
- kang
from fftogo
@Brett good idea. I will work on it
- kang
from fftogo
if you go with the solution to send to twitter only items that have a specific tag, you could use twitterfeed.
- George Moga
Is that the original Tweet? Trying to figure out where it originated and why they think you said it.
- Jesse Stay
That is what I was trying to do Jesse... funny how people just automatically RT someone. We should try a social experiment and create some far out there headlines and tag LG with them. :) RT@LG scoble is pregnant!
- Sid Burgess
Sid, you need something a little more far out than that. lol
- Daynah
My guess is that they are simply using a fake RT with your Twitter name to make their Twitter stream seem legitimate. More and more I am finding Twitter spam bots that are trying to cloak what they are doing by sprinkling tweets in their stream that seem legitimate. I have even found them copying my own tweets as their own. One is even using my bio in their Twitter profile!
- Louis Trapani
FriendFeed search has been sucky lately. Things here have been slow.
- Jesse Stay
Really, Jesse? You're missing the point. I never tweeted that. FriendFeed search is still 100x better than Twitter search.
- Louis Gray
It's definitely spambots - happens to me all the time. Usually porn accounts do it to me.
- Leo Laporte
I think the "fame" issue must have something to do with it. You see this outside of the microblogging realm, not only with Oprah et al supposedly endorsing wheat germ or whatever, but in all of the infomercials which basically say "President Obama wants to give you money, and he says that SuperDuperPooperScooperFunders can give it to you." Whether you're talking about Barack, Oprah, or...

- John E. Bredehoft
Louis, yes, really - it's been slow lately, but yes, that's besides the point. I was trying to figure out where it originated and why they were retweeting it. The tweet looks legit, I'm guessing they just retweeted the wrong person or misquoted from the wrong place.
- Jesse Stay
John, that's got to be the only sentence on the planet that reads: "Barack, Oprah, or Louis". Seriously? You must have me confused with somebody much more visible.
- Louis Gray
I'm not popular enough to have that problem. It's the retweet bots whom I can't stand.
- Bryce Roney
Louis, fame depends upon the circle that is doing the fame designation, and someone who is famous in one circle may be completely unknown in other circles. My favorite example is Johnny Carson, who could go to places like Wimbledon without being mobbed. The reason? At the time that Carson was doing his show, it was not broadcast outside of the U.S. And I'll submit that someone who has...

I reported that Louis Gray feller to the Tweet Police. He must be stopped.
- Josh Haley
"Retweeting" was awesome, before it became famous. Now it's like spam - and obligatory spam almost, because many people would be upset if you don't "RT @" their tweets. Granted, that's fair, but what's happening is so many people are "RT @-ing" every 3 seconds (which is damn annoying), and they do it just to keep their content-pumping levels high.
- Rishie
I don't even care when I lose followers - I tweet what and when I feel the content is quality.
