Top Myths about Iran's Nuclear Enrichment Program | Informed Comment - http://www.juancole.com/2012...
"It is alleged that Iran has threatened to annihilate Israel. It has done no such thing. Iran has a ‘no first strike’ policy, repeatedly enunciated by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has expressed the hope that the ‘Zionist regime over Jerusalem” would ‘vanish from the page of time.’ But he didn’t threaten to roll tanks or missiles against Israel, and compared his hopes for the collapse of Zionism to the collapse of Communism in Russia. Iran has not launched a conventional war of aggression against another state in all of modern history. Israel aggressively invaded Egypt in 1956 and 1967 and Lebanon in 1982 and 2006. The list of aggressive wars fought by the US, including the 2003 invasion and occupation of Iraq, is too long to detail. So why is Iran being configured as the aggressor?" - daveeza from Bookmarklet

Couple splits over 550 house cats | The Times of Israel ~ Wife was willing to lose husband, but not her pets
#AnimalHoardersI "A man from southern Israel divorced his wife this week because she had brought 550 cats into their home. The husband, apparently not a cat lover, told the Rabbinical Court in Beersheba that he was unable to sleep in his bedroom because the surface of the marital bed was constantly covered with cats who refused to lie on the floor. The man, in his divorce request, complained that the cats also blocked his access to the bathroom and did not allow him to prepare meals in the kitchen, the Hebrew daily Maariv reported Wednesday. When he sat to eat, cats jumped onto the table and stole his food. The couple attempted reconciliation at the behest of the rabbinical court. The wife, however, was unable to part from her cats… and preferred to part from her husband." - sofarsoShawn ~presque...

"Who cannot Register? Judaism is interested in preserving the sanctity and distinctiveness of the Jewish people. In order to become a part of the Jewish people, therefore, one must freely choose to do so – through halachic conversion, and not through marriage. Marriage laws in Israel are in accordance with Jewish law; thus, there are couples who are ineligible for marriage. If you fall into such a category, the rabbinate will inform you of such when you come to register, and attempt to find a viable halachic solution. If it is unable to come up with a solution, you will not be able to legally marry in Israel. If you get married abroad and return to Israel – you will be registered as married in the population registry. LOLZ Barack Obama | Stand up for foreign aid <--shameless (how stupid does Obama think we are?). The GOP are not cutting foreign aid to Israel. The GOP believes in making a distinction between our allies and countries that are not our allies. - https://my.barackobama.com/page...
Obama says: "Stand against "zeroing out" aid to Israel Republican candidates for president Mitt Romney, Rick Perry, and Newt Gingrich all say they would cut foreign aid to Israel—and every other country—to zero. Why should successful Israeli high-tech companies need any money from Americans, and especially during an era in which Americans themselves are under severe economic distress? Should Americans channel enormous financial aid to countries like South Korea simply because they have already produced successful high-tech companies like Samsung? - Sean McBride
Israeli tech has a proven record with American tax dollars. plus it finances many Americans. It's a win win. any equivalences would be biased. I certainly would not invest with a country merely because they have cheap labor to build factories. Israeli is R&D... the best in the world. The question for America might be what would happen if they ended a relationship with Israel and what innovation would be lost? It would not be prudent to end the relationship for America. - NoahDavidSimon
Sean would you support restrictions on Jewish intelligentsia in America? Would you tell the educated class of Americans that they can not do their work in Israel because of funding cuts? Noah -- I admire Israeli educational and technical achievements and encourage as much creative interaction between the United States and Israel as possible. But I do think that in times of economic distress the problems of Americans should be addressed before the citizens of any other foreign nation -- and I am not trying to focus on Israel on that point -- the focus is on foreign aid in general. - Sean McBride

As expected, the White House released $1.3 billion annual aid to Egypt despite the country being overtaken by the Muslim Brotherhood and Salafists. The army remains under the junta’s control only nominally—its real loyalty is to the Islamists. Essentially, the US is funding our enemy. - NoahDavidSimon
Isn't it in Israel's interest for the US to have some leverage over Egypt rather than none? - Sean McBride

Nothing wrong with investing American dollars in places that benefit America. An ally in the Middle East like Israel who gives back to America incredible advancements. - NoahDavidSimon

Surprise-- courageous Elizabeth Warren is craven on Israel lobby (Mondoweiss)
"While progressives celebrate Warren for her fight against the big banks and the financial industry's lobbying arm, they have kept silent over the fact that she has enlisted with another powerful lobby that is willing to sabotage America's economic recovery in order to advance its narrow interests. It is AIPAC, the key arm of the Israel lobby; a group that is openly pushing for a US war on Iran that would likely trigger a global recession, as the renowned economist Nouriel Roubini recently warned. The national security/foreign policy position page on Warren's campaign website reads as though it was cobbled together from AIPAC memos and the website of the Israeli Foreign Ministry by the Democratic Party hacks who are advising her. It is pure boilerplate that suggests she knows about as much about the Middle East as Herman "Uzbeki-beki-stan-stan" Cain, and that she doesn't care." - Sean McBride from Bookmarklet
"Warren's statement on Israel consumes far more space than any other foreign policy issue on the page (she makes no mention of China, Latin America, or Africa). How Israel is using hysteria about Iran to try to drive Obama out of office
Here is how the game is being played: 1. The Israeli government and the Israel lobby ratchet up tension with and hysteria about Iran to the max. 2. Oil and gas prices rise dramatically, possibly through the roof. 3. Pro-Israel activists and militants blame Barack Obama for the bad economy caused by high oil and gas prices. 4. Benjamin Netanyahu, exploiting American discontent about the rotten economy, succeeds in denying Obama a second term and replaces him with a pro-Israel fanatic from the Republican Party who will go to war against Iran. Bottom line: the Israelis, using their assets and ops in the mainstream media and US Congress, have trapped Obama in a vise. - Sean McBride

The Nation: US Warns Against War With Iran : NPR (Robert Dreyfuss)
"From the Obama administration side, officials all over the place warning Israel not to attack Iran, and doing so publicly. Most emphatically, General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told CNN that an attack on Iran by Israel would be "destabilizing and wouldn't achieve [Israel's] long-term objectives." He said, "I think it would be premature to exclusively decide that the time for military action was upon us," and he added — echoing Ross — that "diplomacy is having an effect." Importantly, Dempsey said, "We are of the opinion that the Iranian regime is a rational actor." That last remark was aimed at neoconservatives and Israeli rightists who argue that Iran is an irrational, suicide-bound regime that would use nukes even if it meant the destruction of Tehran in response." - Sean McBride from Bookmarklet

"According to Lara Friedman of Americans for Peace Now, the resolution got 15 Democratic supporters only "after days of intense AIPAC lobbying, particularly of what some consider 'vulnerable' Democrats (vulnerable in terms of being in races where their pro-Israel credentials are being challenged by the candidate running against them)." What's more, even as AIPAC was playing this hardball, the bill's sponsors still had to tone down some particularly threatening language in the resolution. But, even so, the resolution defines keeping Iran from getting a nuclear weapons "capability" as being in America's "vital national interest," which is generally taken as synonymous with "worth war."" - Sean McBride from Bookmarklet

this assumes you find Miss i don't pay my bloggers smart and cool, I don't #YMMV - WarLord
She gets to go to much "smarter" parties than you do, WarLord. :) But seriously -- she's no dummy. Neither are these people: 1. Andrew Sullivan 2. Arianna Huffington 3. Bill Gross 4. Bill Maher 5. Clint Eastwood 6. Denzel Washington 7. Glenn Greenwald 8. Iris Mack 9. Jay Rosen 10. Jesse Ventura 11. Joe Perry 12. John Perry Barlow 13. Jon Stewart 14. Norm Macdonald 15. Sean I never had shirts with little aligators, so bolstering my ego by "who" was agreeing with me, no big deal. I'm comfortable with Obama sharing my belief system. Ron paul or Ariana, not so much - WarLord
Obama "shares your belief system"? But he's totally full of shit -- there is a near absolute disconnect between his words (beliefs) and his actions. This is why the smart crowd that pushed him into the White House in 2008 has turned on him. You're a bit behind the times. Catch up -- it's 2012. - Sean McBride
Yep and your best answer just told us about HONEST RAPE, fuck him. And he has a daughter too. Despicable. As for Obama, yep I'm happy with his leadership. As for Iran? Drone strikes? Who cares if I'm starving... - WarLord
WarLord: does the phrase "honest rape" mean "honestly reported rape" as opposed to "falsely reported rape"? What do you think it means? I'm not sure -- perhaps Paul will explain it. That's my first instinctive read of the phrase. - Sean McBride
Sean, I can not honestly parse the phrase "honest rape' Seriously I can't imagine the mindset that would trot that out in polite company. And he has daughters of his own!?! - WarLord
WarLord: doesn't my parsing of the phrase make perfect sense? A truthful rape report as opposed to a false rape report. Do you realize how much nonsense all of us utter in spontaneous, off-the-cuff speech? It's a waste of time to focus too much attention on these verbal fluffs. Why don't you try to get on *substantive* issues concerning war and peace and civil liberties. Or does that overstrain the mental faculties of most Ron Paul bashers? - Sean McBride
Here's my problem Sean, I cannot ever imagine using a phrase like "honest rape" because i don't follow the rest of his logic. Why does that poor women "need a reason' to end her pregnancy? If she feels she was raped coerced persuaded or whatever, its her call except in Ron Pauls eyes not so much..... - WarLord
False rape reports are nebulous at best. Do they exist? Yes. Are they actually common? No. Of course, much of the notion of "false" reports have to do with judgmental perception of law enforcement if some sort of "inviting" seems to THEM to have occurred...ie clothing, alcohol, hip swirl, lipstick, whatever. The whole notion is bullshit. - Prosey BUTTONS!
WarLord -- well, you've got a problem: a very large percentage of Americans believes that the fetus enjoys human rights and they are difficult to convince otherwise on this issue. That is why this controversy never ends and goes round and round and round. It's an area of controversy I usually steer clear of. My main interest here was to try to parse the meaning of that off-the-cuff phrase. - Sean McBride
Where, Sean, do you find the citation that a "very large percentage of Americans believe" that? - Prosey BUTTONS!
Prosey -- Google it for the hard numbers. This isn't my field of interest -- it's your main field of interest, right? I quickly found this: "Americans remain sharply divided over the issue of abortion, but a plurality would like to see stricter limits placed on abortions in the United States, according to a New York Times/CBS News Poll conducted last month. Democrats and women are more... more... - Sean McBride
I actually have a fair idea of the numbers, Sean...and they're nothing to do with Ron Paul. A "25%" of a total population could be construed as "large", depending on what we're talking about. It's a weaselly way of making a phrase, which is why I called it out. As specific to this topic, there IS a large percentage...but not of the total American population; rather, there is a... more... - Prosey BUTTONS!
The poll was from 2007, and I don't have time to take a close look at the numbers, but the word "plurality" caught my eye -- which I would describe as a significant percentage. - Sean McBride
Again, "plurality" in this instance refers primarily to a specific subset of the overall population, with outliers of that subset affected also. Hence, the term. - Prosey BUTTONS!
I've recommended it before, and I'll recommend it again -- not for the main thrust of the book but mainly because of the overarching trajectory of the topic...it is a quite brilliant overview of sexuality (and heavily focused on Western, and more acutely American perception of sexuality). Straight: http://www.amazon.com/Straigh... --a very dense history, easy to read, extremely interesting book. - Prosey BUTTONS!
Bottom line: many Americans oppose abortion for principled reasons. They can rarely be argued out of their position. That is where this issue stands. - Sean McBride
By the same token, "many" Americans also support abortion for principled reasons. (Please note: "support" here is not synonymous with "like". "Support" here means -as in supporting the right to legal and safe access to abortions as part of a complete list of options from which to make an informed decision about one's own body.) - Prosey BUTTONS!
Prosey: a better poll: "CBS News/New York Times Poll. Jan. 12-17, 2012. N=1,154 adults nationwide. Margin of error ± 3." "Which of these comes closest to your view? Abortion should be generally available to those who want it. OR, Abortion should be available, but under stricter limits than it is now. OR, Abortion should not be permitted." http://www.pollingreport.com/abortio... As of... more... - Sean McBride
All of the percentages, Sean, can be considered *significant*...and I'm curious (since I distrust most statistical presentations of this nature by the mainstream media outlets) as to what population served as their sample, and why the chosen sample was deemed appropriate to extrapolate to the American population as a *whole* ~ - Prosey BUTTONS!
For instance, look at the Kaiser poll just beneath it...think about the implications of the question, and compare *those* numbers to the ones above it. - Prosey BUTTONS!
I look at Kaiser polls more seriously in health matters in general; Guttmacher polls in *sexual* health matters even more so. - Prosey BUTTONS!
And the numbers you noted aren't consistent, actually. Scroll further down. Another of those polls show Available no matter what the reason is 37%, Only legal in certain circumstances 44%, Illegal in all circumstances 15% Unsure/refused 5% -- THIS is why I get curious as to the sampling - Prosey BUTTONS!
Okay...another good book recommendation for you. This book can provide *some* insight to the variety inconsistencies AND the origins of such... The Purity Myth http://www.amazon.com/Purity-... - Prosey BUTTONS!
I just reviewed all the polls on that page I linked too -- what a great resource for polling data on abortion. My overall take on all the polls in combination: Americans seem to be evenly divided on this issue and the needle is not moving in a more liberal direction. In fact, the needle may be moving in a more conservative direction, depending on how you parse the polls in combination. - Sean McBride
Sean I['m guessing Komen said exactly teh same thing when they cut off Planned Parenthood. No prob, America is center right and anti-choice.... Depending on how i put abortion question I can get any per cent you'd like to order. The groundswell tells me that people women are growing tired of having their bodies and their health owned by others... - WarLord
...Arianna Huffington has 834,055 followers. 166 retweets represents 0.0199% of her followers. a thimble of brine in a salty ocean... - .LAG liked that
Re "honest rape" --- heres a case in the news in this area, the NYC Police Commissioner's son accused of rape and the DA doesn't believe her http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news... - Berthe
Before that we had the accusation against Dominique Strauss Kahn, which was as phony as a $3 bill; the Duke LaCrosse case, which was a travesty, the prosecutor trying to get reelected in a black city so that he'd have enough time in for a pension. Of course, the famous Tawana Brawley case. - Berthe
But its all moot because what Ron Paul wants to do about abortion is let the states make the laws. I agree. The Supreme Court made a terrible mistake to take Roe v Wade. Abortion laws had been liberalized in 14 states by the time Roe was decided (including NY and CA) and many other states would have followed suit quickly. Much better to do that than what happened, almost 40 years of that issue dominating national politics. - Berthe
Berthe apparently you don't remember when contraception was illegal? Griswold v. Connecticut, 381 U.S. 479 (1965),[ struck down a Connecticut law in 1965 under right of privacy. Enough pious bullshit about states rights it wasn't so fucking marvelous in Mayberry before Roe and Griswold etc etc - WarLord
You're not thinking contraception would be illegal in CT today without that Griswold decision, are you? - Berthe
Umm Berthe that's actually what I am thinking in fact without Griswold and Roe. BTW nice Condescension dude. But I lived the times, so i might have you know an insight... #whatatool - WarLord
Its absurd to say contraception would be illegal today without those Supreme Court decisions. Nowadays its prescribed as acne medication for 15 year olds. True fact. - Berthe
To Sean: Yes, it's a decent *smattering* of samplage, but I would urge you to look to Guttmacher, or even more significantly, to GEMS (http://www.gems-girls.org/). There is more to the story about sexual exploitation of American girls (not even touching on "imported" girls, which is a separate and even more appalling topic). But, you know, they're not blonde, and cute, and virtuous, so they're not "counted" in the virginity movement sweeping the country since 1981. - Prosey BUTTONS!
To Berthe: There are too many stats & cites I could provide, and they would ALL make your stomach turn, especially as a mother (one small example: http://www.moxiebird.com/2011...) -- and I give the woman credit...TREMENDOUS credit...for her courage. But aside from that, I'm repeating myself from a comment to Sean. Serious book recommendation that outlines the current reality across the country: http://www.amazon.com/dp... - Prosey BUTTONS!
Aside from those links and reading recommendations, I'm off topic to the discussion posted. Heh, to the topic posted, I'll just be repeating myself with the comments about ad populum and what a weak attempt at bandwagoning it actually is. ;-) - Prosey BUTTONS!
Prosey -- thanks for the pointers -- I appreciate them. I am nosing around in the abortion topic now and then using these searches: Google [abortion WITH books, charts, facts, graphs, infographics, polls, public opinion, rates, statistics, stats, reports, trends, youtube, videos]. (That means search on "abortion" in individual searches with each of the following comma-separated terms.) - Sean McBride
Sean: I have *tons* of reading I can recommend. From both sides of the debate. Let me know what you're interested in. Bear in mind, most of what I have is heavy academic...so if you can't pull it offa Google Scholar, then I'll get you the ISBN #s - Prosey BUTTONS!
Prosey -- any chance you could post your full bibliography on Google Docs, Scribd, Tumblr, Posterous or a similar site? - Sean McBride
I could, but that particular bibliography has to wait. I'm not yet published, and my entire text is in draft....meaning, I'm still compiling it. I have hesitated, mainly cos I'm pondering whether or not to wait on publishing my dissertation in favor of publishing a book. But when I have a non-changing bibliography, it's mostly public already anyway. You'll have to give me some time, though. - Prosey BUTTONS!
Great -- let me know when it is ready for perusal by outsiders -- I would like to take a look. - Sean McBride
Will do. :-) - Prosey BUTTONS!

"Paul Pillar and Leslie Gelb – both of them well-respected and largely mainstream commentators on US foreign policy – have recently published essays cautioning us all – and Mr. Obama especially – to step back, breathe deeply, ask tough questions, and get sound answers before launching a military strike against Iran. And as Gelb’s piece (excerpted below) cogently notes, the silly season of presidential campaigning is going to elicit (indeed, already has elicited) a lot of tough-guy, red-blooded American bellicosity from GOP candidates eager to bash Obama and score nationally televised debate points in mega-auditoriums crammed full of lustily cheering Republican worthies:" - Sean McBride from Bookmarklet

The puzzle of Romney again. Does he say it (warmongering crap) once Gingrich and Santorum are out (hopefully next week)? Interesting tidbit from WarLord's article: In 1970, Romney was President of the Cougar Club — the all male, all white social club at Brigham Young University in Salt Lake City (blacks were excluded from full membership in the Mormon church until 1978). - Tinfoil 2.0
Romney must have been at Brigham Young at the same time that all of the Ivy League undergraduate schools were all male, no? We don't hold it against everyone who was there that he wasn't a worldbeater for equal rights for women. - Berthe
Berthe I think you missed the point, it was ALL WHITE as was the Mormon Church until 1978 - WarLord
Religion is a difficult thing because you don't know HOW someone looks at it. Romney might give millions to the Mormon Church because he feels they do effective good work with their hospitals and universities. (Seems like I'm becoming a Romney-defender; I'm just an optimist. The cult of mormon is an odd duck, they hate gambling but they profit mightily from the casinos in their Nevada stronghold. I have yet to met a mormon in my travels to Utah and Nevada and Idaho that wasn't a racist.. Just my personal observation - WarLord
Skimming the Salon article, all it really tells me is that Romney was a leader/well thought of, etc. in school. How to put a negative spin on that???? Geez, as someone who grew up Roman Catholic, I sure don't want to be lumped in with the lot of them. Sean grew up Catholic, too, I know, so, no offense . . . but what troubled me from my first communion was the bigotry of the Catholic Church that the Catholic Church is "the one true religion." - Berthe
Berthe -- I don't mind criticism of the Roman Catholic Church at all (I was brought up in it). Well, Mormonism is one sect of protestant Christianity. Her first answer to me is: "As far as I know there's no official position regarding American relations with Israel. I am surprised that no one that I have noticed (especially in the mainstream media) has pointed out that Mormon doctrine could be construed to be anti-Semitic -- perhaps even virulently anti-Semitic. Bottom line: Mormon Zionists seem to be as apocalyptic in their thinking as Christian Zionists. Mitt Romney is a Mormon Zionist, just like John Hagee is a Christian Zionist. So, to answer my own question at the beginning of this thread, there is an important religious and esoteric component to Mitt Romney's views on Mideast politics. He is quite likely not a foreign policy realist and rationalist by any stretch of the imagination. - Sean McBride

Do you think that neoconservatives and Christian Zionists have been good for America? Why might you think that? - Sean McBride
All I can say is, if he was asked these questions he would feel entitled to dissemble! Either way, the answers would be no win for him. It is an important question: why are we so beholden to Israel? What has Israel ever done for us? I don't think our public discourse will get to that question through politicians, the source of the problem, the answer to the problem: We're beholden to Israel because Israel partisans spread money around. - Berthe
I think we need to know if Mitt Romney is going to get Americans involved in disastrous Mideast wars because of his religious beliefs. We would have to be crazy not to shine a spotlight on this issue -- so much is at stake. Is Mitt Romney a Mormon version of John Hagee or Pat Robertson? We need to know. - Sean McBride
I agree that the questions are important. However, regardless, Romney's getting the GOP nomination. That is what is coming. The options, come November, are Obama or Romney. I think, much as I hate to say it, even if he did answer those questions, the viewpoint is one that is loved by the Republican establishment. - Prosey BUTTONS!
