My Hollywood sign picture - it's been Drudged!
Gah. - Derrick
AC, you are all over the Inner Tubes today. - Russellreno
Dubious but still an honour :-) - Mel Buckpitt
Did you get money for it? - Helen Sventitsky
@Helen - yes, AP licensed it (along with a couple others) this evening prior to moving them. - Anthony Citrano
That's a great photo. Fantastic, Anthony! I had no idea it was yours. - Louis Gray
Wow it´s great !!! - horst nigrin
Anthony - did Matt's team get this from your Flickr account? - michael sean wright
@michael - see above; he got it from the AP wire. On that note, if anyone sees it (or any of my others) in their paper(s), let me know. Would be keen to know where it's running. - Anthony Citrano
Great photo - Jason Wehmhoener
thanks guys - Anthony Citrano from BuddyFeed
Nice. - Mona Nomura
[Update: ran in 100+ newspapers, 500+ news sites, and - my favorite hit so far - a half-page in the 9/14 print edition of TIME Magazine!] :0) - Anthony Citrano
Well done, Anthony! (Though to tell the truth I couldn't really tell what was special about the pic until I remembered that it never rains in LA. To me, it looked like simple clouds over a hill - a view I see most days. That's not to say I'm underestimating the impact of the picture or the fire and the devastation that it had caused, just that I forget there are places where clouds are unusual). - WorldofHiglet
Thanks, WoH - although pyrocumulus are quite rare everywhere. I think what made the picture a winner was the clouds + the iconography + the scale. My $0.02. - Anthony Citrano
Even though I knew they were clouds of smoke they didn't look like them at first glance. After a while I realised I had never seen daylight pics of the Hollywood sign with anything other than blue sky. To people from LA it would have obviously been an unusual sight (quite apart from the fact they were pyrocumulus. And thanks - I've expanded my word power today, too! :)). - WorldofHiglet
The other thing is that those clouds are 15 miles away and were reaching heights of 50,000 feet - Anthony Citrano
Again, hard to tell from Canada....:P Okay - I get that the pics are really good, it's just I didn't at first. Next time I'll stick to saying you're wonderful. - WorldofHiglet
That' unreal. - James Stratford
@WoH: I think that'll be fantastic, I love that - Anthony Citrano
Congrats - in this case 2+2 = so much more, for those that have been there - knowing what is behind that hillside and the quantity of smoke - simply makes my jaw drop - very impactful - Steve Hand

A lot of blood, sweat, and beer went into my new website design, & now I need the critical opinions of strangers: http://www.sarahlane.com/blog...
Man i love it - your iphone helper
I'm liking what I see so far. It feels very personalized and I like the home page with the tweet word bubble above your picture. Good work! The blood, sweat and beers paid off! :) - Jon, the Chilled Beartato
sweet - Chris Heath
grays are very new york. color bars at top are very Californian, very simple and modern aesthetic. tag bar is great - "an amazing Sarah Lane creation." "new site, new rules" should be "new site rules" because it does. great work. Squarespace + Final Cut Pro = great new site. - echostreamer
I like the simplicity of the look. It might be good to make the navigation usability match that simplicity a little more. For example, navigation is in two places on home and the top bar on sub pages. That's 3 locations for a new user to remember. This can cause premature exits from your site. I'd make the top nav work on all pages, and maybe merge the two navs on home page into one... more... - Dave Friedel
Any page that starts off with a big picture of you is simply beautiful. So you can imagine my surprise when I clicked your Facebook link and saw my own ugly mug. Your link just takes me to my own home page. Other wise a very nice page :) - Eric Carter
And the links on your other pages, (about, projects, and what not) are taking me nowhere. Not sure if that's my me though. I've been having "issues" lately - Eric Carter
i'm getting sarah's facebook page and the projects links work for me as well - Chris Heath
but i do kind of agree w/ dave about the nav bar - should always be at the top on all the pages - Chris Heath
any why part 1114? - Chris Heath
Looks great! - Renee
Hmm, Now I am getting your FB page. I think the internets just doesn't like me anymore... - Eric Carter
Looks great, nice and simple although the nav menu doesn't stand out enough for me. Actually took me a couple of seconds to find it =P. Once found, works fine though! - Travis Koger
Very nice, but the carpet is sticky. Oh, must be the blood and beer :-) - Slappy Line
Looks good....it screams "Sarah Lane", so I think you nailed it on the design. :) - Chris Luckhardt
Very nice and clean. - Thomas
Nice design, but not a fan of the picture on the front page header. Love the style, just not that head shot. - Otto
I like it! - Fee501st
stylé! - sofarsoShawn
looks really cool. love the twitter, flickr, facebook, delicious, etc. little widget. - Thomas Hawk
LIke others have said I wish that the nav was in place on all pages. the index page without the nav at the top almost feels like its just a page to advertise where to find you on other social networks, which is fine, but i'm not totally sure there is more to this site in that context. Also in the blog and other pages the blocher ads are rather distracting and detract from the rest of the site. Just my 2 cents though. - Rachel Lea Fox
Thx for all the feedback, guys and gals! I tend to agree that the nav should be consistent. I'll try to figure out how that can work into v2. And I'm going to rotate the main landing page pic every so often.. so if you don't like this one, no biggie, it'll change eventually. :) - Sarah Lane

Coolest web 2.0 site I've ever seen & used. I hope things don't derail. Ads will be coming soon, which is fine, but.... then what 's next? Please no quizzes! - Ben Hanten

Congratulations. This is awesome for you and for Facebook. - Mike Sego

What will happen to my 92 subscribers? - Zachary TG
yes you have just failed at failing, no it is not a double negative. - Bahriye
Tragic. - Shannon
I really can't see how FB would buy FF only to shut it down. There are way too many innovations and features FF has that FB honestly needs. I'm looking forward. - Harry Wolff

Congrats? Everybody who's saying Congrats doesn't know what he's saying. Go to hell. - Zio Bonino

Oh, this does not make me happy. Not at all! I've stayed off of Facebook intentionally and FriendFeed is my favorite social network. This is like when the Red Sox traded Babe Ruth to the Yankees. :>( - Larry Hawes
i have stopped using FB for the most part and liked FF alot more. now FF will go the way of FB. screwed again. - Joe Silence
Congratulations. Enjoy the new challenges of acquisition, and I'm looking forward to the result! - Wade Dorrell

Not sure what to make of this. It could eiter be a big win or a huge fail. - dorn
It could have been Microsoft, which would have been worse for everyone. :( - Tyson Key
Can I take this opportunity to say I HATE facebook? - Alex Scrivener
seems the only ppl happy here are the ones in the biz or who stand to profit from the merger. - Joe Silence
I guess we should get ready to get poked by our supposed friends and have various shit thrown at us? Plus 5,000 requests by apps that nearly all suck. - Joey Gibson
There is zero way this could have been a win for anyone, but the now rich founders. - Matthew DeVries
duh - aybars badur
I HATE facebook - Pedram
this is simply awful. - Joe Silence
If I have to go to FB to use FF then it's a lost cause - Randy Pollock
Painful. And apparently I completely misunderstood what FF was trying to accomplish both technically and as an organization. I guess Facebook must have dangled a pretty big bag of money in front of them. - Ken Sheppardson
FriendFeed is Dead! Long Live FriendFeed! :/ - Tyson Key
Awesome. Please fix Facebook email :) http://fudge.org/too-muc... - Jay Cuthrell

I hope this doesn't turn into an APP filled hunk of crap. I love FriendFeed, it was the untouched gem of microblogging. I don't want Mafia Wars invited in my FriendFeed!!! Congrats on the sale though. - Jay Farmington
Where's the "dislike" option? - Gregor Morrill
+1 Gregor - Tyson Key
accipicchia che pessima notizia - massimo mantellini

@Philipp: until the new masters start flexing their muscles and bringing in their own people to enforce their own vision. - Joe Silence
I read the blog post and one statement stands out to me "FriendFeed.com will continue to operate normally for the time being." The time being. This is not just bad, I think it may be #FAIL - berchman

FF will surely be integrated into FB at some point? - Kol Tregaskes
damn Ken is spot on! +1000 Ken! - vijay
not good. - Jacque
Oh. My. Gosh. - Enrico Lamperti
Facebook obviously liked FriendFeed a long time ago. Why would they have copied so many features (feed item comments and the "Like" action, to name a couple) otherwise? It was only logical for this to happen eventually. Doesn't mean I like it, but acquisition is part of the game. I have the same feeling I did when SocialThing! was acquired by AOL, though. - Voyagerfan5761
"Relationship Status: It's complicated" comes to mind. ;) - Tyson Key
Wow, I finally sign up, and read this. This could end up being a very bad thing for FF fans: "Your FriendFeed friend just signed up on this poll, would you like to too?" - Brian Bommarito
sad... - Marvin
Congrats guys. And thanks for your continuos effort in helping promote and integrate web services, like mine, Wakoopa. That's awesome and I hope FB gets better because of it. - Robert Gaal
This will give FriedFeed the attention it deserves. Otherwise it would have been a geek thing forever. - Michael Netsch
Will there be a super poke feature launched tomorrow? - Matthew DeVries
aw, this sux!! Congrats to the Friendfeed team though! - acedanger

"Were rich B!tch!" - Chappelle - adolfo foronda
Another good thing: This ups the bar for Wave. - Wade Dorrell
What a bunch of greedy assholes. - Zio Bonino
Does this mean that we'll be seeing an influx of webcam spammers, a la Twitter? Along with abolishment of the rooms feature, crappification of the search feature, and more "privacy features" that really just put more nails in the openness coffin? - Tyson Key
Some people will do whatever their friends request........ - Michael Muller
I really don't see why people would be anything but excited about this Facebook freindfeed deal. Great news as far as I am concerned. The Friend feed team is going to go over facebook and make it that much easier to connect, share... isn't that what the social web is about? - Kevin Murray
I know a lot of people who use Facebook and enjoy it and that's fair enough. It's just not my cup of tea. The chaps from Friendfeed will get rich and the technology will get absorbed in Facebook but I can't see Friendfeed continuing in anything like it's present form. - Paul Nash
Don't be so negative, something good might eventually come of this... - Tarmo Aidantausta
The End. - Kaan Ertürk
Congrats! I know you all must be crazy excited right now. - Michele Lorito-Chase
chance for FriendFeed to become more mainstream... congrats FriendFeed team! - Jeroen De Miranda
Nothing could make me happier than if they integrated the good tools from FriendFeed into Facebook, which is where all my friends are. So a big "yay!" from me. - Ian Betteridge
happy for you guys, but not for all of us - Flavio
congratulations. this is going to be interesting. - Dave Beckett
I think I preferred the non-mainstream version of FriendFeed... - Tyson Key
I'm turning on my black shirt, my black trouser, my black socks, my black shoes. Although I probably must be happy for you. - Ton Zijp
NASTY NASTY BAD BAD. But we'll see... - Daniel Morgan
Game over. - stark
yeah removing feed also works. - Bahriye
Reminds me so much of Last.fm fall... - Marcos
Given that the FriendFeed team has never been anything but awesome & respectful of its community, I think it's unfair for people to assume that the Facebook acquisition is going to change that. - Jess Lee
Why in god's name are we flying over this shark?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! - Matthew DeVries
Facebook is like a giant who listens to nobody. Please keep your attitude but I don't think you will be able to do so. - Burak "cyrus" Bayburtlu
Noooooooo...... - Sung W. Lim
yeahhh - Çağrı Burak
Congrats! That sucks. - Rutger Blom
Where is that evidence Jess? - Matthew DeVries
I don't know, Like it? or dislike it? - Ömer Balamir
What happens to all the content that we've created and imported here, and the associated metadata? Will all that disappear into the ether? - Tyson Key
If the FriendFeed guys can make FaceBook useful and responsive again, this seems like a pretty positive step! - Robin Barooah
Robin, the Facebook users don't want that I'm afraid. - Rutger Blom
I have big loss of data concerns. See http://ff.im/6pHjo Is there any way to archive all my FriendFeed posts, likes, comments, and pictures (friendfeed-media.com) off-line? Can some Archive.org-like snapshots of FriendFeed be made (Once a month starting Sept 2009)? I'd like to see the cross-links between my posts & other people's posts, even in 2020. - - Mitchell Tsai
Mitchell: the FriendFeed site is not shutting down. Your data will not go away any time in the near term future - we are committed to our users. - Bret Taylor
I just overheard a coworker mention FriendFeed. This is how the world ends... - CannonGod
kafa sayımı yapıp köyü satan ağalar geldi aklıma - Alper Ömer Esin
Then provide us with a way to easily make a back-up of all of our posts and all of the posts we have Liked and Commented on. - Akiva Moskovitz
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want it to be handed off to Facebook. - Zio Bonino
Near term future? - Kol Tregaskes
I don't see good things coming from this. Although I like Facebook, I liked Friendfeed more. Partly because of the environment and the smallness of it. That is now going to be ruined. So, 10-1 odds that Friendfeed will be no more within a year after it gets intergrated into Facebook? - Mathew™ one of a kind
I doubt it Robin. Bret can only give us assurances about the "near future." Here's what I think will happen. Just like Twitter acquired Rael Dornfest and his awesome web services, Stikkit and I Want Sandy vanished (and so did he), Facebook will acquire all the talent from Friendfeed, shut this service down and Facebook will continue to suck. - Jim Addz No Value
Same question as Mitchel Tsai. How do I export my data? I don't want anything to be handed off to Facebook. And I don't want to lose anything. - Zio Bonino
Congrats obviously, but im not sure about the feeling,, different user groups which can not integrate but collide.. hope there wont be an huge integration in the future. - Yunus Tunak
I'm happy for FriendFeed! But, at the same time a bit worried about the future. Hope you guys convince FB to not be evil too. - Vishal Verma
Let's hope this is like Disney's acquisition of Pixar - wherein the Pixar guys ended up in control of the animation studio... - Robin Barooah from IM
Where the f*ck is this option to undo ? - Laurent
Odd that this thread gets modded? - Matthew DeVries
I seriously thought this was a joke. Looks like its not. I don't like it, sorry. - Michael Lynton
Does anyone want to start a bounty to purchase Facebook? ;) - Tyson Key
Congratulations! - John Craft
can't be, shouldn't be... - Kemal
It is! Change is inevitable, my friends. - Bill Sodeman
Jim, I'm less cynical than you - the FriendFeed founders wouldn't do this just in order to become 'talent' at FaceBook. - Robin Barooah
So will we be playing FriendFeed Mafia Wars at some point in the future? Ugh. - Alex Hellstrom
I feel if I should be wearing a black arm band. But I guess when I think about it.............. - Kevin J Hatton
Oh No! I don't like this at all :( - Peter
WTF! Horrible Bret, this the death of FriendFeed.. you know that right? - Uncle CW™
I still think Apple will acquire Facebook, Twitter Friendfeed and Google Twitter. - Thomas Power
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! - Stephen Francoeur
My condolences to all Friendfeeders! RIP! - Evgeni Leshtanski
AAAAwwwful! - carolh
I can't believe it! damn! facebook tos will apply to friendfeed too? should i start to move to another service? why anyone would think that facebook public is friendfeed public?! damn! friedfeed was my favorite! I can't understand this move! they want to kill friendfeed or what? - paula simoes ☃
"I bet I can find 1.000.0000 people who dislike this deal."...Welcome to FriendBook. - Jacque
Well, huge congraulations to you and your team, you deserve every success. To be honest I had presumed this would happen sooner or later - the only business model cool little startups have is to hope they get bought by someone bigger for their brains and technology. I'm going to be in San Francisco in a couple of weeks and was going to stop by your office to bring you a cake and thank you for a great product - maybe I still will if you're still there and there's still a FriendFeed! - Alex Lomas
The FF founders must have know this would be a very unpopular move. Most users I know here are not too fond of FB. - Rutger Blom
damn, damn, damn... - Kemal
One of the sadest news for Internet and web creativity :( - DarkBls
Woah woah... This is real? - Jason Huebel
"Your data will not go away any time in the near term future - we are committed to our users" There's a bit of a contradiction in your statement, Bret. Nice try though. - jcunwired
Now I can break my Internet plan at home. - DarkBls
Grats Bret and the rest of FF. To all the naysayers... Lets see what happens before we start bitching.... - Rasmus Lauridsen
wow!! dazed and confused!! - Roberto Arancibia
I don't hate Facebook, but for sharing things Friendfeed is MUCH MUCH better! - Mathew™ one of a kind
I wonder if that Ben Darnell guy who *just* left the Google reader team knew about this beforehand? Wonder what he's thinking now? (http://friendfeed.com/friendf...) - Daniel J. Pritchett
Just great. I'm certainly not very happy about this. Let's just hope FB doesn't ruin FF. Ugh. - Elena
Who cares? Nothing's gonna change in our pitiful lifes. - bluretina
:| - Amin BZ
This ties in nicely with the fact that you soon will have the opportunity to make your Facebook profiles public and get followers there. - Michael Netsch
чатег номер два - лето ближе с каждым днем
Congrats Bret! this is so great! many congrats!!! - Jason Pollock
That is capitalism for you. Luckely, there still good 'ol usenet. - Peter
Is it April 1st somewhere in the universe? - Robert Felty
#ROFLMAO Is there anything more important than money? It seems NOT #ROFLMAO - Lora Lufark
I don't mean to be negative but there's got to be a win-win logic to each merger&acquisiton. Audience high in only quantity is clearly not a win for friendfeed in the long term by considering its unique selling points. Let's wait and see who will benefit from friendfeed's death now. - ayca
It's all about the money. I would have payed a couple of dollars each month to use FF. - Rutger Blom
Seriously, what is this? It's like Bret just announced that he's killed all your mothers or something. It could turn out good, it could turn out bad, but at the end of the day, who cares, it's just a website (I mean honestly, come on). I could see it going either way, but in the near term, this is a pretty big win for the FF team, so congrats guys. - Chieze Okoye
OMG! - keso
To be honest, my heart sank a little but I am happy to congratulate you and the team for building such a good brand. Well done. - Kevin J Hatton
I'm just surprised, that's all. I'm not saying this is a bad thing (it certainly isn't for the owners of FF). I'm willing to sit back and see what happens. - Jason Huebel
Wow, I specifically use friendfeed b/c it is not facebook. Sounds great for the friendfeed team, but not necessarily for friendfeed users. - Evan Parker

this is clearly a talent aquisition... why am i not excited about this? could it be because facebook has been blatantly stealing features from friendfeed shamelessly. Likes were clearly not an original facebook idea...realtime feeds is another i could go on... - Tate DA FF MVP
While I'm sad, because I suspect this means the best things about FF will disappear or I'll be forced to use FB in some way, if the buyout was for some awesome amount of money, I can't say I blame 'em for taking an offer -- I would. - Andy Bakun
I came to FriendFeed because I don't like facebook. Now the question is, will facebook become more like friend feed? or will they just take friend feed and turn it into facebook? - Tom Ray
FF could be a good R&D arm for facebook. - Andy Bakun
My biggest concern here is that FB has a completely different audience than FF. - Rutger Blom

Dang, and just as I was starting to get used to how FF works. FF is useful on it's own. I hope this only improves FF's system, rather than having it disappear into Facebook's wake. - Don Faulkner
My big question to everybody here is this: What are the potential downsides / upsides to this acquisition? I mean on paper I just don't see what the pros OR cons are. I don't care for Facebook but I don't see how them acquiring FF is going to change everything. - Nicholas Kreidberg
furthermore they are 2 different things: I follow a lot of people here that are not in my facebook list, which is for IRL friends! - Flavio
I don't know where to go next either. I had just settled down to make imaginary friends for all my non-FF tweeps, etc. now, I'm not sure if I should bother. - Don Faulkner from IM
I hope friendfeed continues to operate normally but it does not look good. - ashish
integrate best features of ff to fb, then try to innovate in fb if possible, then kill ff... that's it, cheers, all the best. grrrr... - Kemal
niczak has good points. FF & FB aren't exactly competitors, but they aren't orthogonal either. Let's hope FB's smart enough to see the difference and improve both platforms. - Don Faulkner from IM
Nicholas: The upside for Facebook is they just bought an engineering team that's built many of the feature's Facebook's going to need to stay competitive. The upside for FriendFeed's engineering team is $$$ and the ability to build system for a wider audience. FriendFeed's user base is small enough that it'll either get absorbed into Facebook or move on, and FF will become a footnote on the Internet timeline. - Ken Sheppardson
Don, I don't think FB wants to maintain two platforms. - Rutger Blom
first tr.im (heard about it yesterday), now this. I wasn't a heavy tr.im user (yet), but sad to see it go, even if I think url shortening is silly. - Don Faulkner from IM

Flavio, that's not very realistic I'm afraid, but I like the idea. - Rutger Blom
rutgerblom, I don't expect they do either, thus my angst over this. - Don Faulkner from IM
if there's a team willing to do it and money, and if we accept some ads as everywhere else, we could make a new FF without FB - Flavio
I have worked hard in avoiding signing up for FB. Does this mean I now automatically will be on FB by virtue of my FF account? - Tony Vota from iPhone
Tony, most likely - Rutger Blom
I'll have to go with Flavio's position too. Given this news (plus tr.im and who knows who's next), I'd tend to favor community supported or federated services for things like this in the future. - Don Faulkner from IM
I am purposely not on facebook because I don't really want to talk to people I have not talked to in 20 years. - Andy Bakun

trouble is (from my perspective), that the philosophies of the two platforms are at odds. FB wants to bring people to the site and keep them there, while FF is a hub, bringing people in and then sending them back out. (That's part of why it's hard for the newcomer to understand, IMHO.) - Don Faulkner from IM

lovin' how FF got rid of the brand icons for other sites. it does a great job of refocusing on the FF brand.
"refocusing" on the FF brand? - directeur
How are things up in Seattle, Muneer? - Bret Taylor
Definitely agree. The icons were just visual clutter and potentially confusing to new users. - Louis Simoneau
And on the flip side, they're a key feature lots of folks were using to scan and filter post. I guess you just can't win. ;-) - Ken Sheppardson
I don't agree personally. The icons were a bit of information that some people (including me) used to use. - directeur
That would be an easy setting to add... show/hide source icons - Christopher Galtenberg
The icons gave me a visual cue, especially when wanting to hide items. - kilbuda
"That would be an easy setting to add..." Love those sorts of comments. - jakebf
i miss them alot - Chris Hofmann
I like the service icons a lot more than the people icons. They told me how to interpret the message. - Amit Patel
this is not an improvement. go away grey background. come back icons. - Gabe
It seems like the argument for the new style is to make the life easier for new users, while existing users prefer the old style en masse. The easy compromise is to make the new people-centric view optional, possibly default. - ǝuǝƃnǝ
sorry--refocusing was a silly choice of words. i should have said: "it does a great job of focusing only on the FF brand." - Muneer Mirza

I really hate the new FriendFeed design. It reminds me of what FaceBook will look like in six months.
That is funny! - Robert Scoble
I nearly spit out my tea when I read this :) Well done sir. - Fraser
I can't wait for Facebook to look like this! I have many more friends on Facebook so start your copy machines now. - Wo
Facebook needs a lot more real estate for all its features. It will never look like this. Personally I really like the new look. Although, I think that we should be able to change the background without any 3rd party coding. - Mathew™ one of a kind
Hasn't Facebook already said that they're working on a realtime feed? - Martin Bryant
You Dinosaur! Wait your name Is Rex. What a coincidence. - Marcus Beagley
Maybe we should set up a Facebook Group hating the upcoming friendfeed design before they implement it?? - Paul M Evans

Congrats to @groovemonkey and @mediatrust for helping to raise $6k in one day for MS research!
How did they do this? - susan mernit
Christopher Smith's (aka groovemonkey) wife Bethany was diagnosed with MS a year and a half ago. She's 33 years old. They have a friend that is doing an Iron Man Triathlon for the cause and a group of staff at MediaTrust banded together and raised some money. If you're interested in contributing, I'd be happy to put you in touch with Christopher. - Scott Parent
Alex Scoble
If your brother's name is Robert Scoble and you follow him on friendfeed, you'll see a lot of noise.
Especially when he goes on trips to China or to CES. - Alex Scoble
As opposed to having no brother named Robert Scoble, but I still follow a Robert Scoble on FriendFeed. - Andrew Trinh
Isn't he a good filter? - Amit Morson
Depends on what you want to see. - xero
I'm glad i'm not his brother then. - Uncle CW™
My noise is here: http://friendfeed.com/scoblei... if you see no value there then you shouldn't be following me. - Robert Scoble
And, yes, Alex is my brother. I follow him, but I see nothing but a lot of noise, just like this post. :-) - Robert Scoble
*chuckle* If your wife's name is Tina and you follow her on FriendFeed, you're going to see some random crap. Sorry Dave! - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Alex's noise is here: http://friendfeed.com/itblogg... my noise is here: http://friendfeed.com/scoblei... compare the two and decide for yourself which one has more value (or none at all). - Robert Scoble
Alex Scoble - Noise you can trust! - Alex Scoble
Not so much noise as complaints about noise eh? - Slappy Line
If this carries on I'm declaring tomorrow FF Scoble Amnesty Day whereby there will be no threads or comments about the relative merits of having Scobles on FF, only the post and comments the Scobles make themselves. That should solve any noise issues anyone has. - WorldofHiglet

Change your name? - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Seriously though, this place would be a lot less interesting without all the "noise"...friendfeed is about finding the "noise" that appeals to you as opposed to letting others determine what "noise" they think you should hear/read. - Alex Scoble

Seriously though, Alex, what's it like being known as the brother of a surname? - Slappy Line
Alex - would the title still work if you took out "and you follow him on friendfeed" ??? :) - Patrick Jordan
I have no issues with anything emanating from either (or any) Scoble camp. On the whole I enjoy FF and anything I don't gets hidden. Works for me :) - WorldofHiglet
One person's signal is another person's noise. They are the same. By the way, this post was not a complaint...but satire. - Alex Scoble
Damn, I shouldn't have told everyone this post was satire...that seems to have killed the conversation. - Alex Scoble

iPhoto is Coming to the iPhone! - http://macsoda.com/2009...
iPhoto is Coming to the iPhone!
"Get ready to take mobile photo editing to a whole new level! Mac Soda has heard word that MacWorld 09 will bring full photo editing features to the iPhone. From retouching, to cropping, to applying filters, iPhoto on the iPhone will be the next big thing in mobile photography." - David Bisset (sn) from Bookmarklet
cropping is the #1 thing I want in editing - Courtney Engle from Alert Thingy
i want a better camera before i'l start editing on the iphone - Zee.
+1 Zee. How badly do I need to touch-up my blurry, poorly-lit iPhone pics? - Carter Rabasa
My iPhone has tons of pics from emails and other sources outside my camera. And I would like to be able to brighten a pic or crop a photo before emailing it to a friend or posting on Twiiter. Even if it's not the best pic in the world. A better camera means a hardware upgrade (new iPhone) so I welcome a smarter/cheaper feature (this would be just software) in the meantime. Negativity, yikes. - David Bisset (sn)
Not to mention that 3/4 of the photos i've taken with my iPhone have been good, not blurry. Of course, that's not shaking my arm and taking pictures in good light. But that's another discussion... - David Bisset (sn)
but really David, you've often got an email and though "ooh, not a bad photo - just wish i could brighten it up and crop it before syncing it to my desktop or forwarding it on to anyone..." . I just can't see the point right now - of course, should the iphone photo quality get much better...this is a gem. - Zee.
as cool as I think this is, photo editing is cumbersome on the small screen. it might be good for small edits, but then why would you want such a beasty program for that. I would love to use the event management in iPhoto, that would be cooler than editing. - Thom Allen
Can I have copy paste instead? - Jeff (the マクダジ of FF)
I'll take the wait and see position on this app. I'd rather edit photos on a larger screen using a mouse. - Bob Gannon
Zee, I'd be lying if i said I wished for cropping and such on every or even most pictures i get via email or even take with my camera. I think we are all in agreement this isn't a use-everytime thing anyway. But yes - i have taken pictures that i wish i could zoom before submitting them to TwitPics or emailing. If nothing more than to remove people or background items I don't want included. I don't think this is Photoshop (I agree with Bob), just simple tools. I don't see the big deal honestly. - David Bisset (sn)
What would this mean in terms of battery life? - Christopher Harley
i hope it is free and good like the one on OS X Leopard - TheHenry
iPhoto on iPhone only makes sense if Apple ships a phone with a better camera. The current iPhone sucks more than most 2 megapixel cameraphone cameras. It has terrible low light, appalling colour balance, is fuzzy and has no flash (Note- I'm not comparing it to other 2mp phones here, not good cameraphones like the Carl Zeiss Nokia's, SonyEricsson Cybershots and 8 megapixel Samsungs) - Ian Fogg
This could be really sweet, but I agree the camera really sucks. - Spencer
Have to agree, iPhone needs a better camera and I wonder if this is a clue to an improved version for this year. - Shauns
If it means anything, I think the next iPhone will have a better camera (primarily for video, not to quiet the photo whiners). Hopefully this is the path they are going down, if iPhoto comes to the iPhone in some form. - David Bisset (sn)
David, iPhone camera sucks when shooting anything at distance due to fixed focus lens. This is unrelated to camera shake or megapixels. In fact the only scenario where it doesn't completely suck is portraiture within 10 feet distance. Everything else is not completely blurry, but far from sharp either - mediocre at best. I really hope competition with Nokia (which ships better cameraphones than iPhone) will force Apple to upgrade the camera soon. - andrei_c
Andrei, agreed... not good at a distance but that's why I have my other camera (the one with the better lens) for shots like that. Most of my shots I choose to take with my iPhone are close quarters in good or decent light. Regardless, i hope they do upgrade it but you won't see it until iPhone does video IMO. - David Bisset (sn)

@susan check out mozy or jungle disk with S3 - Aaron Eaton
I just started using Mozy for my home systems and I like it. Had not seen Jungle Disk and I will have to look at it. - Robert Miller
I back-up every morning. It's the only way to get the car out of the driveway. Wut? - MVB (Grinch of FF)
I would do it Josh. I was offline for a couple of weeks and lost 4 months of email do to not having a routine. Not proud of it (ashamed, actually), but that is why I looked into online backup services as another layer. I am also thinking about loading up a Windows Home Server or Linux NAS box. - Robert Miller
Josh: I have not gotten to the point of determining the best solution for a NAS. For my security work, I use OpenBSD, but I have not sat down to go over a NAS build-out. I have put together a couple of Windows Home Server set ups and it is not bad; once you get past the "Windows Server for Dummies" mentality. - Robert Miller
I've been using Linux with a hardware RAID controller to provide NAS service for Windows, Linux and occasionally OS X clients for years. It hasn't let me down yet. It's defiantly not cheap, but you could try the LVM/softRAID setups if you want to cut the cost. (and performance) - matthew john ernisse
Matthew: Interesting thought. I will look at LVM/softRAID, though I am more of a hardware raid person myself. - Robert Miller
Depends on your definition of "good" and how much storage you need. Other than that, should be good. - Robert Miller
That is total space. RAID 5 (minimum I would go) that means a minimum of 3 drives and, yes, that is like Microsoft saying Vista runs on a 1GHz P4. - Robert Miller
Using Mozy daily, but will soon switch to JungleDisk (archive + backup) - You.
@robert years ago I used to use the kernel soft RAID stuff for mirroring for my /home drives. Worked pretty well, didn't fail me. The code has been in mainline since sometime back in 2.4 land if I remember correctly so it should be fairly robust. It is hard to beat the performance of a PCI-X hardware card though :) - matthew john ernisse
@joshchandler try dlink dns323 works quite well with vista and also supports upnp => u can stream media to ps3 and xbox - Shivanand Velmurugan
If I was going for a dlink solution, it would be the dns343 (Four drives) and RAID 5 capable. - Robert Miller
I don't know a lot about the embeded solutions, but I will advocate the usefulness of hotswap & hot spare abilities. In the 5 years I've had a hardware RAID-5 setup I've replaced 3 drives. It is well worth it to invest in something that can do at least hotswap and online rebuilds. - matthew john ernisse
True. +1 hot-swap and online rebuilds. I also prefer hot-spares, but that adds $$$ to the price. - Robert Miller
I have found sparing to be worth it, esp. in a RAID4/5/6 situation. Running degraded sucks, and you are vulnerable to another drive failure taking out all of your data. And it is SO EASY to be lazy and go "I'll replace the drive next paycheck"... (learned the hard way) - matthew john ernisse
well i've had 2 backups to 2 different NAS devices for years but this year i think i'll experiment with the cloud - Fuad Arshad
I bought a buffalo terrastation 2tb raid5 (1.5tb actual after parity) for around $900 about two years ago - next storage device will probably be a drobo. what i really would like to find though is a usb or firewire external bay for IDE drives that loads like the drobo - from the front - hot swappable isn't necessary, but would be nice. toaster style like the esata that @leolaporte has is the dream, but ease of swap is the idea... any suggestions people? - Chris Heath
Backed up and cleaned my car. Do I get a cookie? :-) - Mayuresh Walke

Robert Scoble
Here are the reasons people are giving me why friendfeed sucks:
1. Tim O'Reilly said that he liked the news aggregation, but gets too distracted by the comments and likes. You can't hide those. - Robert Scoble
2. Ross Mayfield said he gets overwhelmed. I figured out that friend-of-a-friend feature is bringing way too much into his view. If he follows just one person, me, he sees hundreds of items every week. - Robert Scoble
Too much Gmail thinking in FF. They vastly improved e individual utility, but lost the ability to scale beyond a single use case - ming yeow
3. Other people tell me that they don't know how to use it, the UI has too many choices. On further pulling what they really wanted was the "best of day" feature but it is hard to find and not very useful unless you've been very careful on following people. - Robert Scoble
I find way more things to like about FF than I do with Twitter. - Jeff P. Henderson
4. Other people tell me that they want more help in figuring out who people are before they follow them. They have a point. I just visited some people's pages and I have no idea who they are, or what kinds of things they are passionate about. - Robert Scoble
I like it but I don't use it as much because I get overwhelmed by noise friend-of-a-friend introduces a lot of people that just don't fit in with what I want to see. I don't think I would care if I was seeing a lot of relevant information to me. - Jimminy Fuller
If I could figure out how to feed Twitter's @replies into FF I'd be all about it. - LA Snark
5. Other people tell me they want to do just see items that have lots of likes. I don't know how to do that for them. - Robert Scoble
Twitter has first mover advantage. I have too many relationships in Twitter that are not on FriendFeed. No easy way for me to sync Twitter followed/followers with FriendFeed and use it as a Twitter client. Then I'd like clean way to dedupe the Twitter stream out of FriendFeed to see the special stuff in FriendFeed. Its not enough to just hide Tweets without likes/comments. - Elliott Ng
It isn't about if it sucks or not, it just isn't for everyone, just like twitter. Twitter is simpler, I can use twitterific on my mac & iPhone. Actually, this does suck. Everytime I hit return to try and add a space, it posts the comment. Beyond 140 characters, you do need white space to be able to read text on a computer screen. - Steve Rhodes
I like FF because it is configurable. You can see as much or as little as you want and you have full control (or almost full control). The other major plus with FF is that it is threaded so you can have actual conversations. - Jeff P. Henderson
6. Other people tell me they want to see a strict reverse chronological view and that I can't figure out how to do that for them either. - Robert Scoble
If I had to stack rank, this would be my #1 tool. Ahead of Twitter, Facebook, strands, and anything else similar - Jeff (the マクダジ of FF)
7. Ross Mayfield wanted an easy "share this item on my blog" feature. I know how to do that (use the "More" menu, copy the permalink, etc) but that's too geeky and not as nice as Facebook's "share" feature. - Robert Scoble
7. I like how twitter reminds me of birds: cheep cheep - sofarsoShawn
Twitter, like email and Google reader, has a nice "author"/"headline" format that is easy to scan...FriendFeed visually makes you work harder to extract meaning from the stream. - Elliott Ng
It's too confusing because people are following the wrong people and don't know how to filter? As a 'Social Media Expert' you have no clue how sad this makes me... - MVB (Grinch of FF)
Fascinating. I can be as negative as or more than anyone else, but I don't associate FF with sucking. - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
ming: there are lots of people who tell me they try friendfeed and don't get the point of it and leave. If friendfeed solves some of these pain points in 2009 it will make evangelism of the service a lot easier. - Robert Scoble
Format of the FriendFeed stream is not efficient...seems like a lot of scrolling to get infomation...less easy to scan, show/hide, tag, etc. than Google Reader. - Elliott Ng
Not everyone is going to get every thing. I suppose, though, that it's significant when it's LOTS of people. - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Is the learning curve for the UI and information flow really overwhelming for the tech-savvy group it's aimed at? I doubt it. That said it's not a perfect product, and I can see how some people may want their aggregation without a social media aspect. - Mo Kargas
I think #4 has merit. You can somewhat tell what people like by what they talk about and what content they share on various services, but I think FF could allow for a quick "About Me" somewhere on the profile so people would know who you are, where you're from, and what your interests are (other than the internet). - Mark Frost
MiniMage: I didn't say that I thought it sucks, but this is the feedback I'm getting as I show it to others and talk to other people about their experiences. I've heard this feedback enough now to know that these are the roadblocks to adoption. - Robert Scoble
Ooh, I like the idea of a view with a strict reverse chronological order. - Eric Florenzano
FF has great potential for the aggregator but needs a simple grid of feeds in and feeds out for everything. That way I could choose where to make updates and control the flows. Twitter is feeding more than one place for me. I could use FF in some of the same ways as TweetDeck but only if I could make it work bi-directionally with Twitter and as needed with other services. - Lee Herman
Bottom line: if I choose to live inside of Twitter where my relationships are, and I have to go into Google Reader to check feeds, FriendFeed just doesn't add enough incrementally especially since I have my Reader set up with important feeds and it doesn't replace the need to go check Twitter anyway. - Elliott Ng
I pretty much ignored Friend Feed until I saw you mention the live feed a few days ago. Now I'm hooked. Darn you Scoble! Darn you to heck I say! :P - MarkCarras
#8: clients like Tweetdeck are non existent. Same for iPhone apps. - Robert Scoble
You can't DM people. Heck, you can't even @reply someone directly, only comment on their post. - Reuben Thum
I *really* dont like the Friend of Friend feature - Sam Houston
Sam: you know you can turn it off, right? - Robert Scoble
Recall I adopted FriendFeed before you. :) Still like the aggregated feed for myself but haven't become a Kung Fu Master of FriendFeed to make it really work for me. Maybe completely hiding Twitter, setting up more groups, hiding more media types, and adding more people, would make it work for me. - Elliott Ng
So really, most of the complaints could be resolved if some of the folks making those neat Twitter applications made one for Friendfeed or if FF implemented these on their own. Sounds like a great 2009 for FF either way:-) - Brandon Mendelson
This is a feature recommendation list for the FF team. - Gadiel Rivera
scoble: I am just not sure if the world needs friendfeed. I am a big fan of reducing noise as the most direct form of value add (think google), aggregating and then recommending seems a little twisted. Hope I am making sense - ming yeow
Until recently I had hard time understanding how to make good use of FF. It was too noisy and difficult to use as compared to Twitter. However, after seeing your video on 20 reasons for using FF on FastCompany, I am now able to understand it a lot better and making good use of it. Since seeing that video, I have not been able to stop using Twitter and FF. Thanks Robert for producing that awesome overview video. FF team should have created that a long time back. - Amar Shah
So, basically, it doesn't suck. They just don't know how to use it. Everybody is not built to use everything. None of these points raised have much substance to me. - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
ming: the world might not need friendfeed but I sure do. Also, it's really the only competitor to facebook out there and facebook needs more competition. - Robert Scoble
FF grew on me - it's organization is a bit off-putting for me but I've managed to wrap my oddly mapped out logic around it. It does help drown out the noise of Twitter. - Renee Hendricks
FF is simply confusing. Not a friendly UI at all. Don't Make Me Think says Steve Krug. FF is making me think and I just don't have the patience for it. - Bora Celik
1UP Rasheen. I do think having a small profile would be nice, but other than that, yeah, I agee with exactly what you said. - MVB (Grinch of FF)
Robert, I guess my problem is..is that I can't find that option :P I'll go look now :) - Sam Houston
Friendfeed has been a fairly fluid concept since I started using it, and the kinds of suggestions you're hearing from Ross and Tim get addressed and fixed all the time. The question is, even if the Friendfeed crew could get every nuance tuned to exactly the specifications people are giving you, would they actually come around and use it, or would there just be another excuse? Sure, it's not perfect, but it's a work in progress -- and they progress fast around here. - Pete Delucchi
I can't stand Facebook. Totally different though. One is all about time waste pokes, super pokes, and other useless crap and Friend Feed is more about networking and sharing actual content and thoughts. Friend Feed is about actual communication. - MarkCarras
Sam: click hide on an item twice. That will bring up the hide options dialog where you can select turning off friend of a friend. By the way, even if you turn off all that stuff you'll still be able to see those items at the bottom of the page. - Robert Scoble
Pete: as friendfeed gets better it pulls more people in. Fixing roadblocks to evangelizing a product DOES pull more people into using it. - Robert Scoble
Lets not forget there is no easy way to follow conversations that you did not originate, I should have the option of being notified when someone else comments on a thread I posted on. FriendFeed is awesome though - Kelly Johns
Mark: I have 5,000 people on facebook and I never get my time wasted through poking or other useless crap. The news feed there is quite good and the social graph is way more advanced than friendfeed. - Robert Scoble
Well, maybe I am missing somethings, but everything I have seen at Facebook just bugs me. Maybe I should look at yours and see what I am missing. - MarkCarras
To me, FriendFeed isn't about being a social graph. It's first and foremost about aggregating items I publish irrespective of the source service. The ability to subscribe to a person is more comparable to subscribing to a news feed as opposed adding a friend on Facebook. In terms of subscriptions, FF is basically Google Reader with a proper commenting system. - trextor
Bora, I found Facebook's UI more confusing than Friendfeed's. The difference for me is the more I use and discover the nuances of FF the more I like it, where as Facebook has flat-line. Granted, a component that's hard to factor out (for me anyway) is FB is people-I've-known centric and FF is people-I'm-discovering oriented + grappling with ideas. - Micah Wittman
Contrary to Robert's opinion, I hope FF developers don't start thinking that they need to compete with Facebook. Subscribers != Friends. It's that simple. If anything, they're competing with RSS readers. For what it's worth, many of these same issues also plague RSS readers. - trextor
FF does have an iphone app coming any day now (Friendly). And with some more options with the IM feature (like activating it when you comment on a post like this so then it notifies you when a response is made) then it could become even more conversational. I view this as more professional and higher IQ than Facebook personally. - Amani
I'm with you on that Trextor. Friend Feed is more like RSS style of social networking. Facebook is not. Facebook just doesn't have a focus of info like Friend Feed. - MarkCarras
I have to be honest that I don't use Friendfeed as much as I probably should. They have so much automated features that I don't even bother to login in weeks. - Vlad Zabblotskyy
57 comments and 29 likes in 48 minutes. Interesting! - Robert Scoble
I feel as if Robert is doing an evil (not really) little experiment with us and showing someone else to prove some point ...LOL. - Amani
Amani: I just noted that because it seemed to have touched a nerve. Got a lot of feedback very quickly. - Robert Scoble
Robert, many of those are very valid points and it's easy to see why a new user can get overwhelmed. I know that Brett keeps talking about making the service easier and friendlier for new users. I think they should perhaps offer a 'Lite' version for new users that hides a large number of features which can later be accessed by enabling the 'Advanced' features. Just a thought. - Mark Krynsky
It took me 5 minutes just to figure out where my post was in this huge list of comments! Amani is right, FF will become way more conversational when it notifies you on additional comments on posts like this. Facebook is good at doing this when you comment on wall posts. - Kelly Johns
The 'Send an IM when someone comments on my posts' feature has probably been my favorite of the year as it keeps me very engaged with people that comment on my items. - Mark Krynsky
The 'date of post order' and some sort of basic profile are my 2 highest requested features for FriendFeed. - Kol Tregaskes
Very useful list. - Dave Winer
My biggest problem is that all my real world friends are just now getting onto facebook. a few are moving to twitter finally. it will be a year or more before my network migrates to friendfeed. you have to go where the people are! unless of course you could define a network on one platform and use the features of another platform to view/interact with that network. too much 'friend adding' duplication now. i wish you could treat these tools as readers rather than network definers. - Jeff DiStanlo
UI has too much clutter. Customization support is needed. Post aggregation could use custom filters, - anand
I consider FF the "heavy duty conversationalist". If I want wih a few folks I know for a little convo, FB is great. If I want a little convo with more folks I know a little less and make it public, Twitter is great. FF is about longer, tied-in conversations, holistic. FF needs a mobile client that works WELL with more phones than just the high-end ones else it will be in nichedom for a while." - Patrick Moorhead
It mostly boils down to information overload. Friendfeed needs to invest substantial resources and effort in dealing with that problem before it can appeal to the masses. Friendfeeding is an activity for a small elite at this stage -- for people who can easily process huge torrents of text. - Sean McBride
Robert, re: #8: clients that work with FF include Twhirl and PeopleBrowsr. - Will King
I'm surprised there's not more of an outcry to be able to dynamically filter services in Friend list/feeds (home, list1, list2, etc.). It'd be a lot easy for me to scan these if I can a) filter-out 1 to many services (eg, don't display twitter, flickr, rss on list1) and b) filter-in 1 to many services (eg, display only twitter, only twitter and plurk, etc). - Matt Albiniak
On FF vs FB: I think FB may be a competitor for FF ("ok, I can do this in Facebook" says the mainstream user) but FF is not a competitor to FB ("Facebook is much more fun", says the mainstream user) due to FB's app aggregation. - santiromero

LOL - funny that the #1 app in the Apple Appstore is now "iFart" with a big graphic on the homepage...hahaha

Nissan Stealthily on Track for Electric Car World Domination : Gas 2.0 - http://gas2.org/2008...
"Nissan is bringing the first of their electric cars to market by 2010 in many locations around the United States. According to Alan Buddendeck, Nissan’s VP for North American Corporate Communications, this car will be priced between $22-$25K and have at least a range of 100 miles. By 2012, Nissan will be bringing an entire lineup of affordable electric cars (sedans, minivans, compact cars, and sports cars) to the world market. This isn’t just some limited roll-out, and they’re beyond serious about it. Their overarching business plan has been re-written to focus on zero emissions vehicles." - Kevin Fox from Bookmarklet
This is why I said US auto industry only has a few years to go all electric. We need a moon shot. - Robert Scoble
Batteries not included. I'm surprised the article doesn't make much of Nissan's big innovation: you buy the car and lease the batteries. The idea is to keep the car purchase price close to that of conventional vehicles. You'll pay a battery lease on top of that. Actually, it's not an awful idea. - Chris Baskind

I can definitely say the mkdir */*/*/* for nested directories is very useful and I've never heard of it before. I'm a major linux fan (but went back to XP after getting the iPhone) and I love the terminal. It's daunting at first but feels like home after a while. - Derick Valadao
