I don't have this allergic reaction to bad fonts, but I do to JPEG artifacts in images that should've been compressed with GIF or PNG (e.g. ones with lots of text).
- Mihai Parparita
Do you see a lot of JPEG artifacts in the subway?
- ⓞnor
I just showed this to cw and he LOLd all over himself, then tried to explain it to me for 10m but I still don't get it. Glad you made a funny tho. :)
- Jenna Bilotta
did you share this with the bookmarklet, btw? or did this make it into your reader and then your brain area in less than 15m?
- Jenna Bilotta
Yeah, bookmarklet. I generally have a Brizzly tab open with a ["google reader" OR googlereader] search open.
- Mihai Parparita
We need to add an automatic "shared from a plane" tag to Reader shares, so that your followers realize why there's a sudden burst of activity.
- Mihai Parparita
Since it's been three years since this post (and I just finished the Brendan Eich chapter in Coders at Work), I'm curious how much of this ended up happening. JS2/ES4 obviously didn't, but I wonder about the static analysi, deCOMtamination and moving more code to JS bits (http://blog.mozilla.com/tglek/ seems to have occasional updates on these topics, but it's hard to gauge scope/progress).
- Mihai Parparita
A few attempts at making the (new?) YouTube favicon more legible. I like the use of subpixel anti-aliasing, but there are possible issues with some LCDs having different orderings (also consider iPhone-like screens in landscape and portrait modes). There's an even better revision further down the thread that doesn't use subpixel anti-aliasing at all and looks just as crisp.
- Mihai Parparita
I'm going to take a wild guess and say that Google Contacts has been disconnected from Google Reader. I've been able to follow several people since this problem started, but their names only show on my contacts page. I do get their updates as new comments in my Google Reader, but I have no name to attach to groups. I can like their shared items, and also comment on their shared items and my 'comments' label turns to bold text whenever someone updates ( including myself ).
- Wallace
Maybe you're right. I can't even get to the people I follow list, since the "You are following..." message is not visible.
- Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
All data about followed and followers has disappeared from Contacts. It was there yesterday so I suspect Wallace is right about the disconnect.
- Polly Potter
Well, it's bedtime here in India and I'm all done for the weekend. Let's see how Google Reader behaves tomorrow morning!
- Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Mahendra, I'm having similar problems, and now I can't add any notes or see my own shared items.
- Kamilah Gill
Kamilah, the latest shared item of yours that I can see is from two days ago. Have you shared since then?
- Wallace
Shares are showing up, but with no profile pictures. Also, my follow list is empty.
- Harrison Powers
I'm definitely experiencing "people you follow" being empty. Much angst here. Well, maybe not really. Virtual angst, maybe? Much else on google reader seems fine. :D
- Rob Schieber
Wallace, I might not have shared anything else in that time span. Can't really remember, I post in so many places. Gr definitely is messed up for me now
- Kamilah Gill
from email
I see no avatars and no comments in mobile, though comments view has items. I hope thus means some fixes we've wanted are on the way, but some notice would be good. Why are we always being notified after the fact?
- Vince DeGeorge
from iPhone
This is what is happening to me (http://ff.im/7JFoG).. Be careful about using it when it is having problems.. hopefully it is JUST a front end issue!! Kol I'm seeing the same thing!! Anyone else getting javascript errors?
- Chris Myles
not working for me, cannot open sharing settings and do not see people I am following
- Gerald Hildebrandt
Still the same. Thanks everyone - when I first reported the issue I got swamped with a 'works fine for me' response on Twitter. Now I feel much better. :)
- Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Google Reader seems to be working great for me. If there are any issues with slowness, I had assigned them to our hotel's network. But yes, you can see I am still sharing items.
- Louis Gray
Louis: Many people have reported the issue, so it may be a load distribution problem affecting only some.
- Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Harrison: that's a brilliant idea! Works like a charm. :) I just discovered there are a dozen new people following me after my article on Feedly yesterday.
- Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
I love the internet! Always find an answer somewhere!
- David Slater
hmmm doesn't work for me .. hopefully I'm not totally screwed!!
- Chris Myles
Lot's of people have been trying to use GR as their new social network... this outage (with silence) does not bode well. I fear we'll lose many we gained. It's one thing to be buggy or lack some functionality, but a different thing all together to lose almost all functionality and not keep your users informed. Have we learned nothing?
- Vince DeGeorge
Oh, except I can add new RSS which goes through because I can access the subscription page.
- Myrna
That's a quick way to ruin my day. I use Google Reader soo much.
- Hunt
from FreshFeed
Hunt, same here. Myrna: did you try using the German version? Worked for me.
- Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Thanks Harrison, the German version seems to work for me! Now maybe I can shut the working window down without fear...oops never mind....I'm stuck with the open window..
- Wallace
Yes, I went through most of everyone's items already. So are we in German from now on lol
- Myrna
Actually - Norwegian & Polish version is working here, too - thanks for the info, Harrison. And well, 'long live open communication!' ;) :)
- Hanna Wiszniewska
German localized version is also working for me (in Germany ;-) ), but not English UI
- Gerald Hildebrandt
Hmm, I continue to have the same problems everyone has mentioned with Reader after almost 24 hours now. The German version will work, but I don't read German. Is there a way around the language barrier?
- John Ladd
John, you don't have to read German really if you know GR. The posts are in English. If you use the German page you will see how familiar it becomes..mostly! :)
- Myrna
What about Jenna. I will message her on fb. She is one of the GR staff.
- Myrna
Mine is working; I'm in US. Google Contact info still missing but shows in GR.
- Polly Potter
Actually, Reader's working for me although not consistently. I'm often having to mark read a number of articles several times before they're actually marked as such.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Akiva, wonder why its working for some and not for others. Most of the people I follow now are working on the German page.
- Myrna
I've set up a new Google Account ( wallace.lockhart2@gmail.com ) to try and solve this problem on my end. My new profile page ( http://www.google.com/profile... ) is up, and I've imported all my contacts from my old account ( wallace.lockhart@gmail.com ). My followers/followees are viewable now in my GR so far comments are functional. If someone could visit the new profile, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
- Wallace
Thanks, Myrna. I suppose I should have thought of that! Thanks for pointing out that I was missing the obvious. :P
- John Ladd
Wallace, I subbed to your new GR but it is not showing up yet.
- Polly Potter
I got it Polly, thanks! It seems to be working now. I'll leave a comment on your latest shared item.
- Wallace
Now the English version is busted; can still read subs but people I follow is empty. Can see them in the German version.
- Polly Potter
Myrna/Wallace: Think so. Because in order to comment, the user should have added you to a group.
- Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Myrna, I have removed everyone from groups on my old page. I still have links to those contacts in GR, and periodically try to add them. No success yet. This may be link rot. Rapid link rot. Here's my new shared items link; http://www.google.com/reader... Until Google gets this straightened out, I"ll be sharing from one page and pushing feeds out of the other. Oh well, it's free. Thanks for your concern, patience and help folks.
- Wallace
Wallace, can't you just go to the French or German page and continue from there. It's the same and I can comment and like everything.
- Myrna
I tried the German and Polish pages, and both behaved as the English (US) page. But never mind that! I just discovered that I can follow my old tagged feeds that I push out of my old account and continue to post in my new account! That means I don't need two accounts! Woo hoo...!
- Wallace
UPDATE FROM GOOGLE: The GR team says "We've rolled out a workaround for this problem, reloading Reader should enable you to see your friends list (and other functionality) correctly again." Everyone, please sign out of Google Reader, restart your browser, login again. It should work. (From GetSatisfaction: http://getsatisfaction.com/google_...)
- Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Yep, we just rolled out a workaround. If you're still having problems after reloading, please reply in the GetSatisfaction thread.
- Mihai Parparita
It worked for me without signing out of google and without reloading. Just changed the settings from French to English.
- Myrna
Chris, thanks for the update! I wonder if yours was an extra-special case though, since if the specific use case of someone you're following adding their "Like" stream to Google Profile was the issue, then folks like Louis Gray would also have been affected, since he follows the same people and many more (I believe) than all of us who had the problem.
- Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Yeah I'm not sure but I am glad they came back with a response.. I'll be even happier when I can get my comments out to back them up or use externally.
- Chris Myles
Would it be against the iPhone developer license agreement to create a website where developers could list the submission date of their apps and then timestamps for when they were approved/rejected?http://developer.apple.com/iphone... lists the average waiting time, but that's less useful than your (presumed) position in the queue
- Mihai Parparita
I hope you're right about this. We submitted our app around the same time you did and from what we understand, the current wait is 3-4 weeks.
- Justin Whittaker
When I click on "from digg.com: Stories / Popular" in the header of each article, it takes me to the list of Digg posts, but it only has a "Subscribe" button there. Yet I am still getting them in my feed so I'm already subscribed.
- Jesse Stay
Are you possibly getting Digg updates from people you follow?
- Chris Nixon
from iPhone
Chris, no, it's not that. Louis's link worked, but going to my main Reader window and hitting refresh or even going through the feeds wouldn't show the feed as subscribed.
- Jesse Stay
My link worked and you could unsubscribe? Ha. (bows)
- Louis Gray
Louis, yes, but there is still a bug in Google Reader since I had to click on your link to finally get it to work.
- Jesse Stay
Hmm, not quite sure what happened here, but feel free to DM me (or Jenna) if it happens again.
- Mihai Parparita
woh. did friend feed just show me a DM tweet to me in my main home view? I can't find it on twitter as public, but it's here in FF as a normal tweet. WTF?
You will see it your home feed, with ">>" indicating it's a DM. Freaks everyone out, but unless there's a bug, no one but the participants can see it.
- LogEx
from iPhone
That's odd. You can get DMs from FriendFeed here, but not Tweet DMs. Jenna, you are confusing us all!
- Louis Gray
My bad, missed the 'tweet' part. That is very odd behavior, FF gets a Twitter firehose, but presumably the API shouldn't let that happen.
- LogEx
No guys. this is a twitter direct message. it looks like a regular tweet from Dolapo, but it's in my FF timeline. With no ">>" next to it. I click on "from twitter" on the friendfeed interface and it takes me to a twitter page for that status which doesn't exist. I am so confused.
- Jenna Bilotta
so he did mis-tweet then, and I'm going crazy?
- Jenna Bilotta
I bet he tweeted what was supposed to be a DM and then deleted. FF correctly found the tweet, and Dolapo did not delete it here. Problem solved. Mihai figured it out.
- Louis Gray
I love detective work like this. One day a DM fail will topple a small country. Maybe a large one.
- Micah Wittman
Rapid syndication without synchronization is not conducive to remove(ification).
- Bill Strathearn
My shares already come to FriendFeed, as you know, and I won't be sending them to any other network (until forced). But appreciate the how-to.
- Louis Gray
Is there a keyboard shortcut for the new "send to" feature in Google Reader?
- Jesse Stay
Does this speed up the transfer? I've noticed the past 2 days have been a little laggy getting here.
- Courtney Engle
So when I using this method try to "send to" Ff - It takes me to FF and just pastes the URL of that feed item into a posting box. Is that proper behavior?
- Matthew DeVries
Yep. Similar to the behavior with other engines. You can then add other rooms etc (something not possible with regular sharing AFAIK)
- Deepak Singh
Wonder if there is a way to get it to open and drop it into the bookmarklet instead of Ff proper.
- Matthew DeVries
So what is the code to send it to a particular room? If I wanted it to flow in the public FF I would just click 'share'.
- Paul Arterburn
Whoa, sharing to a particular room would be epic :) Would probably have to create a shortcut code for each room instead of multiple rooms...
- Zulema ◕ ◡ ◕
Ya, I really just have one group for this - public share or private share among close friends (private FF room). That would also let me DM the link to a FF user if I wanted a *really* private share.
- Paul Arterburn
AFAIK sending to a Room is a bit painful. I tag the item in GReader. Then subscribe to that tag's RSS in the FreindFeed Room. A little laborious to set up, but quick when sending - you just tag. And wtih GReader's pubsubhubhub they show up in Room immediately.
- Nick in Manila
hi, Mihai! is there a way in Google Reader to find all the items I commented on? a link like for the 'liked' items? I'm thinking a solution would be labeling them, because I want to check later if somebody responded and I don't want to scroll through all the other comments.
- George Moga
There's a link to your liked items at the top of the "Your stuff" page, or you can go directly to http://www.google.com/reader.... Right now there's no easy way to see all items you've commented on though.
- Mihai Parparita
that's too bad. labeling doesn't help either, as the comments are not visible in regular label views. thanks for the answer!
- George Moga
"Last Wednesday, Google Reader introduced a flurry of new features that probably won’t affect my usage of Feedly in the future. They’ve added a couple of time savers, and will once again contribute to the problems of information overload for tons of people. It is also drastically changing whether or not I will continue to use Google Reader."
- Kol Tregaskes
from Bookmarklet
She states: "There’s no log-in, pop-up, or anything happening and I don’t know if Google Reader is syncing with my URL shortener of choice (Bit.ly)." Just for clarification, we have integrated bit.ly and there is a popup for twitter that opens twitter.com in a new page, with the text pre-populated and the URL shortened. Make sure your browser's popup blocker allows reader.
- Jenna Bilotta
Jenna, thanks for the tip I've unblocked Google Reader pop-ups ironically in Google Chrome. ;-) So can I use my own bit.ly account and thus track stats?
- Kol Tregaskes
"get rid of the damn duplicate content caused by the stuff I subscribe to and the content shared by my friends." Hear, Hear, if anyone can do it Google can!
- Andrew Roche
If your friends share with a note, a duplicate item is created. If they do a regular share, and add a comment, the item will remain marked as read and you shouldn't see the other shares as unread.
- Jenna Bilotta
(and we are working on remedying the share-with-note duplicate issue)
- Mihai Parparita
I would just like to be able to mark the current page full on screen as read, that would be handy, because all my folders have thousands in at a time.
- Paul Greer
I've just read a shared article from 'People you follow' and it was marked as read in the regular feed view as well. very nice! It would be good to see what others have shared in the regular feed also. Now I can see my icon next to items I have shared, but nothing from followers.
- George Moga
I would prefer that items become deletable after being read, some items you read and want to 'archive' just as in gmail...
- TrafficBug
I never Mark All as Read anyway, so this is not required. :)
- Louis Gray
@Louis imagine leaving your GReader for 4 days and come back with 4000+ new items waiting for you...I check it every hour and I find 100+...read the first 50 and Mark all as read :)
- Ahmed
Jenna: serious bug... I marked all items older than two weeks as read, and it did that, but also marked all items newer than 2 weeks as unread!
- Shannon Jiménez
@shannon We just tested this and couldn't replicate it. Could you give some additional detail?
- Jenna Bilotta
Jenna: I selected one of my folders (that contains many feeds) and selected "Mark older than 2 weeks as read." I'm using IE8.
- Shannon Jiménez
I think that's new! I got it as well, good to have.
- Cassidy
@ben cool, thanks! (we'll chat about adding it but in the meantime you can add it as a custom service on the settings page)
- Jenna Bilotta
Jenna: Just for further info-- it does not happen when I select an indivdual feed, only when I select folders.
- Shannon Jiménez
@shannon can't replicate that here. :-/ (looking into it some more)
- Jenna Bilotta
@Jenna: still having the same problem (tried it in both IE and FF). Also, discovered that it doesn't happen if everything is already marked as read in the folder. It only happens when some things are unread. Edit: based on Joelle's comment below, maybe this happened because I had marked everything as read in that session, not because everything was marked as read...
- Shannon Jiménez
I have just had the same problem as Shannon - was coming here to share the warning - what a horrible horrible bug! (I have 400 feeds). My google reader experience is more and more a love/hate thing (certain things are just a pain when you have 400 feeds) :S Although for me it did it in every feed except the ones that didnt have posts in the last 2 weeks (obviously), including ones that were totally marked as read
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
note: actually i did not mark as read items I had read this very session, but all others
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
