"@nicholas i think we may discover that it’s just a bit of fun amongst geeks who have too much time on theri hands, get out in the real world and interact with those who need help, now that would be better, buy a secret santa for a homeless person, that would be even better. this is just fun marketing / pr for reddit that makes stories like this look like something else @mikeashworth"

"I think the problem is (and im generalising here) is that many a website gets designed and built before any analysis has been done into business needs. often business owners (mainly in the SMB sector) get suckered in by tales of fantastic design despite fact site becomes less usable. @mikeashworth"

"140 chars is difficult to convey entire message however if someone is going to publish their considered opinion on research then it is always a great idea to have full grip on the terms of reference first. As for martha’s point about you being quick to blog, well the good thing about a blog is you can explain in a lot more detail than 140 chars what you think and take the debate from twitter, which in my humble opinion is not a place to converse (140 chars loses so much). One of the things that intrigues me in a response above is about contention / throttling on broadband. isn’t it possible that ISP’s could do this with fibre? I hope you locate the research you require Joanne Mike"

"one of the main challenges with this for companies is not the tool but who is using it. I would imagine that people who use it now will be typical "early adopters" many of whom view life through a telephoto lens rather than a wide angle one. By that I mean they are glued to the social web, rather than sometimes taking a broader perspective. Group polarisation is something else to consider too where these ppl all end up saying the same thing. And lastly there is a propensity to hate this fail that hate this fail that that actually the real value of the comment / opinion is lost. just some thoughts @mikeashworth"

"wise words as always Danny however you shouldn’t feel a need to apologise for not responding within nano seconds of being prompted on the internet. i’ll get shot down for this but hey, it’s about time we all realised that “it’s just the internet!” it’s not “real life”, real people, real conversations, body language, tone of voice, real communication (not 140 characters which get taken the wrong way). social media/networking has a valid place in a well balance outlook on life. If someone immerses themselves too deeply in it at the expense of more valid areas they will drown. My latest bugbear is that people feel the constant need to post what they are doing 24/7, if yo a re out enjoying time with friends and feel the need to constantly tweet about it or take pics and post to the internet, I believe you are not “truly present” with your friends, it’s one step removed from a great night out (as if you are viewing it through a camera yourself). @mikeashworth Total Comments by Mike..."

Don’t know if i’ll be getting one of these letters too, drop me a line, you have my full support on making the wider world aware of the actions of Melrose and by association Rolex. What it does prove though is that they do not test these releases of new code, parameter files etc. I now trust them that little bit less...... and with fingers in many pies this is the sort of thing that could, in the future, have major repercussions for their entire brand."

"their is currently an obsessions with metrics and measuring things. Not a big fan of this or twitter grader however I take my hat off to the website grader as that has some use. I wonder if perhaps a tool could be developed that measures “real world” relationships, low self esteem etc. now how could would that be be eh? Imagine the conversation. “sorry darling, we’ll have to file for a divorce, our relationship is currently ranked at 36 out of 100, much less than all our friends and people we have never met” Mike Ashworth"

"Certainly some food for thought. With regard to the model around suggesting ppl to follow. One challenge with this may be that as soon as you follow that person you use a tool to circumvent having to receive their tweets(adverts). Much like many of the ppl on twitter do already, They use a tool so they can manage the twitter stream more effectively. Maybe twitter will start to charge some of these other 3rd party apps? Interesting times ahead… Mike Ashworth"

"As always a thought provoking post Geoff. I hadn’t heard of “Honest signals” (another book to add to the growing list. Lol) I think one of the challenges of the collaborative environment (online) as opposed to one where people are face to face is the one you highlight about all voices being heard. In a real world environment you have an effective facilitator whose job it is to ensure that all comments/ideas are extracted from those attending. Preferably prior to the commencement some thought has been given to the “types” of people involved. Whether we are talking Myers Briggs or Belbin or some other method its always useful to create teams with a variety of skills, behaviours and thought processes. Perhaps there is some way of looking at online behaviour and tying in to the various belbin/myers types? That would be useful. Similar to the work done by Charlene li maybe but with a deeper psychological angle? Alternatively, if you know the people in the online collaborative environment,..."

"As if i need to say it, another spot on post Mack, keeping it real:-) So many people are advising others to use elaborate tools before they even stop to consider the audience and where and what they are saying. I think a lot of peopel are being poorly advised and if time / money is not abundant it's criminal that they are being advised badly by so called "experts". First thing I do when talking to any kind of business is to look at customers, current ones, ones they'd like, personas etc. all the good stuff starts here.... People touting new tools only without the other fundamentals to bring to the table will all be exposed"

I tried to engage in conversation with him, commenting upon a tweet that he might make, no response at all Result, i no longer follow him on twitter, i no longer su bscribe to his blog, I will no longer buy his books. "Another report has also been published recently. titled "Social networks that matter: Twitter under the microscope", it has been published by First Monday. First Monday is a peer reviewed journal on the internet. Link to report http://twurl.nl/17mrcz This is the Abstract for the report Scholars, advertisers and political activists see massive online social networks as a representation of social interactions that can be used to study the propagation of ideas, social bond dynamics and viral marketing, among others. But the linked structures of social networks do not reveal actual interactions among people. Scarcity of attention and the daily rhythms of life and work makes people default to interacting with those few that matter and that reciprocate their attention. A study of social interactions within Twitter reveals that the driver of usage is a sparse and hidden network of connections underlying the “declared” set of friends and followers."

"I think you raise some interesting and valid points I'm certain that for some Businesses it will work well. What I have trouble with is the constant evangelising that goes on. The Twitterati and the S'mores proclaiming that if everyone isn't on Twitter they are missing out. The above is simply untrue. For some. Yes. For others. No Their must always be an element of common sense applied to any tool that is available for use. That bit is often missing. I find it also interesting that many of the Twitterati / S'mores actually aren't at stage 5. Some are still at stage 3. They want followers. Converse? forget it.. That impacts what people think of them (reputation management anyone) and their "personal brand", if indeed they have one. Mike Ashworth Marketing Coach and Consultant Brighton and Hove, Sussex, UK"

"Perhaps Twitter is the new place where the “people formally knows as forum flamers” now hang out? Because of its “real time” posts and conversational nature it leads the way in providing a forum for people who previously would not have had a voice worth listening too. This will always be the challenge with “social media” and “social networking” it requires people. Sadly, many people are not rational, sensible and do not deal in measured responses. I have to ask though where did the comment “Twitter being a source of mass intelligence” come from? It will always be a mass, however the users will dictate how it is used. Early Adopters beware, it may change beyond belief……. Mike Ashworth Marketing Coach and Consultant Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, UK Transforming Businesses with effective marketing"

"Ponder on this..... When Companies pander to a small (but vocal) number of the twitterati / s'mores, is their not a risk, that instead of this being a fantastic journey of joy and discovery on the social media superhighway, what will actually happen is that an underclass of Customer will be created. A customer who doesn't reside on these platforms, perhaps wants to communicate via methods they like, such as the phone, or maybe even a letter? Of course these Companies may choose to have only Customers who reside on these platforms and that is the day that they will have to shut up shop. Mike Ashworth"
