Waseem Sadiq, CTO (left) and Khuram Hussain are showing me how you can send emails and messages to Twitter, Facebook, and others. It is in private beta now, will launch later this year. http://www.inbox2.com Does all sorts of useful stuff like forwarding, copying, etc. "It is really hard to build a good email client," says Sadiq. They nailed it, must try it.

Interesting categorization of the development into eras. Any consideration to the impact of scale on the 5th era? Just as a recent example with Facebook, their format evolution was not well received by what is not an insignificant number of members, and yet the reality is - that change - negative impact not withstanding is not rolling back.

oh ok, makes sense especially at those numbers. Plus, my friends don't have access to my gmail contacts to keep their info up to date. That circles back to mixing different kinds of friends on one service.

Facebook is a great addition to any address book, but not a replacement. Once everyone has facebook it will replace the address book. Almost everyone has a phone number, but tens of millions of people are still without facebook in North America alone. I admit this is rapidly changing as Facebooks user base continues to rise.

I'm in 100% agreement with this. I use a Blackberry, but feel the same way. People keep their info up to date on Facebook for the most part and it sync's to my phone. So do events and birthdays. LOVE it.

I do agree with your proposal but only for personal (F&F) use. Most of my corporate contacts are 40+ age and they're still getting used to the Facebook stuff (I'm living down south Equator Line, and it's more likely a cab driver had a Facebook account that a senior o C level manager -with the exception of people working in IT departments of course-). Hopefully they'll update their phones frequently too so that I won't have to track them down all the time.

Robert Scoble: If you set up the Google Sync on the iPhone as described here: http://www.google.com/mobile... then only the contacts in your "My Contacts" on the contacts list in GMail gets synced. It does take a little bit of initial setup to work well, but after you get it set up, it works brilliantly. When I sync my Facebook to my iPhone, the photos and such that I put on the phone then get auto-synced back to GMail as well via the Google Sync. Very clever.

Well, as otto just said, I'm using Google Sync for iPhone. Any changes i make are instantly synced back to Google. Its also easaier to manage and merge contacts from Google's interface and sync them back to the iPhone. More groups would be a nice addition ( instead of having to search for contacts not in the synced group).

Syncing groups would be a *fantastic* addition to Google Sync. The iPhone supports contact groups natively, it just doesn't offer any interface to put contacts into groups by default (you can find apps that will do this in the app store.. ABContacts Lite comes to mind).

Oh, one more thing that's very cool about Google Sync: It'll sync your Google Calendars to the calendar app on the iPhone. You can choose which calendars to sync, and Google Contacts recently added a birthday/anniversary feature, making an automatic calendar out of your contact's birthdays and such. That syncs to the iPhone as well.

Nope. I can say definitively that Facebook will never be my address book, nor will any other online service. I may have bits and pieces on various networks, but to hold the master/superset, I trust only native access on a device I own and control. (not to mention how horrifying it would be, to me and my family and friends, to cough up my entire social graph to be pimped out for commercialization all in one place)

Facebook is not search able by Google. The content inside Google is closed. So how is this going to be an address book? Until they make the content searchable that will not happen

I've been using Google sync for about a month now, ever since I got Google Voice and it's worked flawlessly so far. I'm amazed at how fast it pushes updates to the iPhone. It's almost instantaneous. I haven't tried the FaceBook integration yet and I'm reluctant to do so since I don't see any real benefit at this point.

With this script (from Googler Brad Fitzpatrick) http://brad.livejournal.com/2398409..., you can sync your Facebook contacts with your Google Contacts. It works perfectly (merging existing contacts), it's very fast, very secure (Google API). Just awesome.

Plaxo is a good alternative too. True, not everyone is there, lacking the network effect Facebook has. But integration with Address Book or Outlook is great and I find that people also maintain their info up-to-date. Thanks for those who mentioned the Google Sync, still using MobileMe and didn't want any additional sync to break everything. Might try it.

Yeah, I have a Plaxo account. A lot of my friends do too, but they never update their Plaxo information. In the end it's more than just the technology. People actually _use_ Facebook. Facebook is wise to capitalize this and strategize towards being your portal on the internet. It's something that Plaxo could never dream of.

Interesting topic because I had just migrated over from my OutLook/Palm combo to a Google Contacts (Gmail) / iPhone combo. The reason why I wanted to do this is because I think it is finally time to move my contacts from a physical machine to the cloud. The sync between Google Contacts and Calendar with the iPhone via Google Sync is quite seamless and I am getting to like it more and more everyday.

Jose, the problem is that you can't search for contact groups, i.e you can't list contacts that are in two different groups/labels - e.g search for [group:(work AND nyc]. You can't do that either in Facebook. If you have a workaround for Google Contacts, please share!

Just discovered a way to use Google Sync to get my Facebook Events automatically put into my iPhone. First, import your FB events into Google Calendar as a new calendar using these instructions: http://gr33ndata.blogspot.com/2007... then just set up Google Sync to sync that calendar as well.

Download the new Yelp app (came out yesterday). So you shake your iPhone 3 times. That activates a feature called Monocle. A message should come up if you activated it. A blue box will come up saying "the Monocle has been activated." It will create a button in the top right corner. Now you should be able to look at the bars, restaurants, etc. Only works on iPhone 3GS.

I just got the yelp AR to work, and I am staying tonight in a hotel, so I went to my window, and held the camera to the window and it was able to show me reviews of the businesses right across the street from me! I am in love with yelp all over again!

I think we're going to use Joomla as the CMS for OpenFF.org. It's well supported, has a plethora of modules and simple enough for someone non-technical could maintain it. I considered Drupal, but it's not as easily maintained from the standpoint of a non-technical user.

I mean I could tell you that unless you know it inside and out, and know how to apply the right plug ins, add ons, and modules; it will be unstable, it will lose posts, it will double posts, it will lose profiles, it can't link within itself, can't post HTML, live linking will be impossible. If you don't have a Joomla god running it, it's useless. Meanwhile, Vanilla, Google Groups, do all of this out of the box. But just calling it bad pretty much covers that.

Jason, I would have to agree there. I've used Joomla 1.5 for dozens of site and it's one of the most powerful web publishing platforms for a non-developer I've seen and I've at least tried most of the open source CMS's out there. They're also coming out with 1.6 this fall so it's getting even better. Once you get over the initial learning curve it's actually a great platform and getting better all the time.

Our intention is to provide a functionally-equivalent project based on version 2 of FriendFeed's API. The UI may be different in some ways, but we're going to work very hard to preserve the overall experience that people enjoy here on FF.

Jason, please don't take any of my critiques as deal-breaking level sentiments (I don't think you did, but just clearing the air). These are ancilliary tools for the project as you've well pointed out. Sometimes providing a large or detailed amount of information and opinion leads one to believe the speaker holds a commensurate level of importance for the issue (CMSs). In some cases it just means there's more history or familiarity trying to be shared. Joomla, X or Y - it's all good :)

It makes a good place for linear conversations, but we're running up against the problem of older stuff (that may be important) getting lost as newer, more active posts bubble to the top. With a forum module, we can make certain posts sticky (so they're always on top), etc.

Lets face it, Twitter was built as an update service - a big Internet megaphone. The natural transition has been from update service to marketing service. Big Internet Megaphone. It's good at that, but it's not at conversations nor at discovery. The larger problem is people still approach Twitter like a true social engagement tool - and it's simply not. Apostol I get value out of Twitter. You aren't listening. I get value out of AT&T too but it COULD be so much more. Chris I tried to be positive but Twitter just doesn't respond to positivity. After all, that's the ONLY WAY a company gets to the next stage. I've never seen a company go straight to Oprah stage without getting early adopters excited. Andru: when he was hyping up the service and telling his users to use it, he was getting something in return: being at the top of the follower lists. When Twitter artificially put its own people at the top of the follower lists, and handed out grants of followers (worth many hundreds of thousands of dollars, by the way -- Mashable has changed its entire business to be Twitter centric) they specifically dissed Leo and many others. Most of whom won't point it out in public.

I'm in much the same boat -- Twitter is a necessity for professionals and bloggers to stay on top of things, but other socialnets like Brightkite and FF are light years beyond it, which doesn't look to be changing any time soon. Scobe: I very much disagree that it is about self pimping. Perhaps your senses are mush because you follow too many? I absolutely love getting that link to a new article or research, or to get a tweet from that celeb that makes me think and provides insight into a new world. I also use it as a research tool, for exploratory purposes. Twitter, as you know very well, is about what you make it, and that is a tenuous notion that really is influenced by who you follow.

Andru: again, the list did NOT exist in the days when we were hyping up Twitter. So, there was a "promise" to early adopters that if they invested time in the service they could be at the top of the follower lists. Sort of how PlayFoursquare is today promising users that they can become mayors of places they frequent more than anyone else. What Twitter did was the equivilent of PlayFoursquare telling everyone that their "mayorship" doesn't matter anymore and that Oprah is now mayor of everywhere.

I like friendfeed because of its realtimeyness, but I like twitter because it requires you to be concise. I have seen some brilliant tweets done in 140 characters or less. Robert, I think you may have the makings for one of your future blogs here. Perhaps you do it for that reason? ;) The thing about Twitter is always going to be its LBE. It's a mainstream LBE to Social Media. For that very reason its perfect for business, government, and non profit to take public temperature and promote. The other "noise" is the "MV", the "mainstream voice". The conversation is 4 way.(and yes sometimes only 1 way) but there it is and its not going to go away any time soon.

For example - how do I message you directly so you know I'm speaking to you (i.e. Twitter @ reply) but all your followers and my followers know that we're having a conversation in Twitter back and forth so that they can follow and interject when they want. Everytime we do that we have to start a brand new discussion thread and I have to "tell" you somehow that I'm talking to you. Mitchell, that sounds useful, but what I really was curious about was restricting visibility of my own items. On FriendFeed I put tech stuff on my home feed for public consumption, but family doings are in a private group. I'd like to use FB the same way if possible. As for getting to know new people, on FF I have a "followers" group that I check every so often, while keeping the noise level on my home feed tolerable.

Bruce - Sound like the two users (if you don't get caught by Facebook) approach is cool - It's been proposed as "alternate personas" (maybe Bruce Lewis & Bruce X Lewis) - one of my friends Brian Tung also went as Byron Tung (tribute to Byron the writer). A fan page is another possibility, but not everyone at Facebook has fan pages, so it doesn't work as well as FriendFeed's one-directional links.

Agreed, I'm waiting for this feature to fully embrace GV. I'm just not willing to give up the cell number I've had for 10 years. I hear that it is a rather complicated process right now that involves multiple faxes between carriers and lots of manual work over multiple days, and until the process is automated (which will take some time) Google won't offer it to the general public.

Is the goal necessarily that FF become very big? Isn't part of the fun that relatively few of the (now most likely) 7 million make their "home" here, so one can feel part of a community - one that's neither insular in the way that FB can be nor, at the other extreme, a seething crowd of people, each trying to promote his or her own agenda, rather than creating a kind of, well, friendship?

Amy, it can be idyllic to want a small community where you know everyone, but FriendFeed is not a non-profit company, and it is working in the shadows of companies that are growing very quickly. We would be naive to think the company's employees would be uninterested in building a site that served a larger audience and made money.

I hear - and I understand. No doubt we will end up creating micro-communities within FB. I can't tell if I'm an anomaly, but I don't think I am, in that I intentionally keep my FF and my FB activities separate. My siblings, my friends' kids, and my high school class president don't really need to know that, say, I just commented on Amir's link to an article on sex toys. I admit I need to investigate further, and you're right - we must live in our own time, accept what is and learn to work with it.

This is something the team always kicks around as a joke. I think Twitter's model may not be scalable enough....it was fine when the geeks are on it. . .but after the "Oprah" effect everyone from celebrities to the the Tom,Dick and Harry generation....Twitter cannot take it. Correct me if I am wrong, but FF -may- go down that path, but we have yet to see the same number of people jumping on FF like Twitter. Maybe the founders of FF should have an interview with Oprah?

I've been playing around with the features the last 10 min. It's UGLY. I feel like I'm on Facebook, 'What does this link do?" I can't wait until the day Google employs drag and drop. And that sidebar *still* needs to be fixed. At the bottom, when I'm on my netbook, it only shows one link. I keep hoping they'd bring back that expandable bar.

Jenna, in the bottom part under subcriptions, yes, there's drag and drop and I should have made that clear. The top part, I don't have drag and drop capabilities. As for using GR on my netbook: That line above subscriptions is fixed. I can't move it. So when I'm on my netbook, the only thing that shows under it is one link at a time.

To me, what I like & use at Friendfeed boils down to 1) Subscribe to a couple of interesting people ("social network" free). 2) See their web pointers and idea messages ("unread message" pressure free) and post your own. 3) Discuss these with other interesting people (easily, quickly, uncluttered). Search + room-groups + privately subscribing to feeds are neat add-ons rounding this up. Does Google Reader offer this?
