A Map of the Internet’s Black Holes « Strange Maps
"The series of tubes famously dubbed the ‘internets’ by president G.W. Bush* constitute a world wide web of interconnectedness. But, as this map demonstrates, there are some black holes in that web. They represent the 15 countries that limit or prohibit their citizens’ access to internet as a way of censoring the free flow of information." - Michael Fidler from Bookmarklet

Skateboarding grew from a Southern California hobby born out of surfing to a nationwide trend, which developed into a visual style. While the bottoms of skateboards have always been adorned with graphics, back then only a handful of skateboard manufacturers existed. Today, vast amounts of visuals are created for skateboards, with more than 40 major brands in the market. - Michael Fidler from Bookmarklet

Long Lost Einstein Theory Discovered!
Os Theory Final.jpg
But, that doesn't make sense. Just because OS X > Google OS and Windows 7 > Google OS doesn't mean that Windows 7 = OS X. - Rishabh Mishra (p248)
Rishabh, there's a ? mark after Windows 7. It's kind of hard to see. Besides, it's Einsteins opinion, not mine:) - Michael Fidler
The differences between the two are negligible now and it really comes down to a matter of personal taste. Point being, is that they both have excellent OS's now. But we could argue about this until we're blue in the face, and still not change each other's mind. - Michael Fidler
One is UNIX. The other is not. :) - Victor Ganata
True! but they are both efficient for most users needs now. I'm not saying that Windows 7 is better than OSX, but my point is that it doesn't matter as much as it has in the past. And this wasn't about comparing the two of them in the first place. Notice the ? after Windows 7. - Michael Fidler
A question mark doesn't excuse a basic logic failure. Put it this way, 5 > 3 and 4 > 3, but 5 != 4. - Andrew C
You're totally right, but It wasn't meant to be interpreted that way. On the other hand it says that OSX = Windows 7 which is a statement, not a conclusion. It's been a long long time since I've taken a logic class, but what if it started with the assumption that both are equal? How would it play out then? - Michael Fidler
Then you would be saying A = B & A > C & B > C and then end up with A = B... you would be restating one of your starting assumptions. The thing about that original picture is, a logical argument usually is constructed of one or more statements which lead to a conclusion: A > B and B > C, therefore A > C. (with axioms of transitivity and such assumed. {handwaving} ) So it seems to be... more... - Andrew C
I'd apologize for nerding it up, but this thread is about OSes and has a picture of Einstein and a logical argument. =) - Andrew C
It's OK , and I can see how I wrote it as an equation, just as Einstein would have. Had I put more thought into it, I could have done something else to make the same point. It was just meant to be fun, and not taken literally. I though comparing OSX and Windows 7 might rattle some feathers, but I didn't expect this to be a refresher course in Logic. I actually wrote something different at first, but there's only so much space, and it looked funny having chalk on his suit sleeve:) - Michael Fidler
To get back to what you said about Chrome being as good as the other OS's, remains to be seen. With a ton of work it might be a killer OS, but Gazelle is under development, too, And Microsoft openly address’ the obstacles which currently stand in their way. Finally, if Scoble is correct, then all of this was simply PR which was rushed out ahead of Microsoft’s coming announcement this... more... - Michael Fidler
I don't think Chrome OS is really comparable to Win 7 or Mac OS X. It's more in the realm of iPhone OS, Palm Web OS, or Android. I guess it's exactly like Gazelle. Except it's open source. - Victor Ganata
Victor, Agreed, and that's why it's not a threat to Microsoft. But if you want to laugh, read the link I left just above your post. - Michael Fidler

July 9, 1958: Surf’s Up, as 1,700-Foot Wave Scours Alaskan Bay | This Day In Tech | Wired.com
"1958: The tallest wave ever recorded — splashing nearly 500 feet taller than the Empire State Building — explodes down Lituya Bay in the Gulf of Alaska. Lituya Bay is a T-shaped fjord on the coast of the Alaskan Panhandle, west of Glacier Bay and about 120 miles west-northwest of Juneau. It measures 7 miles long by 2 miles at its widest point and has a narrow mouth (roughly 1,600 feet wide) that makes navigation difficult during high tides. Once inside, however, vessels (mostly fishing boats) find a snug anchorage among the coves lining the shore. Water from three glaciers empties into Lituya Bay, which is over 700 feet deep in places." - Michael Fidler from Bookmarklet

via flickr.com From the photographer, cresk; A pano of 2 portrait formats - about 20mp in total - taken on Saturday evening a couple of minutes from where I live. While searching for a great landscape in beautiful low light conditions it started to rain very softly on the other side. All of a sudden this beautiful bright bow appeared as well. I realised that the composition would be really on the tight side when I tried to capture the inner bow in a single frame from where I was located at the time being. With the ultra-wide Tokina 12-24 I actually did, but I felt a phenomena like this just deserves a little bit of extra work. So I turned my camera 90° in portrait mode on an already defect tripod-head and carefully - however unprepaired - tried to make a 2-shot panorama of it. Hopefully you like the instant decisions I had to make. Posted via web from Michael’s  | Comment » - Michael Fidler

There's are still people shooting off fireworks down by the beach here. Crazy, but at least the cops are leaving them alone.

And here's something that will make your jaw drop. This is the largest Nuclear Bomb ever detonated above ground It's a 57MT-bomb that was designed 50 years ago. It's frightening to think what they must have designed since then. http://www.youtube.com/watch... - Michael Fidler

Insane is accurate. - Eric Logan
The really big bombs were just compensation for inaccurate targeting systems. I think the standard nuke these days is 10 megatons. - Pat Rice
Probably much smaller Pat, 10 megatons is still one hell of a boom! - EARL (Born in the USA) from email
Pat - So, you’re saying they only need 10 MT warheads now because they’re basically smart bombs. This is a description of the first Hydrogen bomb ever tested "Ivy Mike was the first H Bomb test; it was exploded at 7.15 am local time on November 1st 1952. The mushroom cloud was 8 miles across and 27 miles high. The canopy was 100 miles wide. Radioactive mud fell out of the sky followed by heavy rain. 80 million tons of earth was vaporized". And you say this is a standard payload. Now that's a scary thought! - Michael Fidler
