""Quite frankly, what the market is looking for is some kind of coordinated action from central banks around the world." said Kathy Lien, director of currency research at GFT Forex. The Paulson plan, she added, is like a "Band-Aid for a problem that stretches way beyond the banking system now."" Oh, now even $700B wasn't even sufficient and everyone else needs a bailout too? - Mike Yang via Bookmarklet

"As economists, we want to express to Congress our great concern for the plan proposed by Treasury Secretary Paulson to deal with the financial crisis. We are well aware of the difficulty of the current financial situation and we agree with the need for bold action to ensure that the financial system continues to function. We see three fatal pitfalls in the currently proposed plan" - Mike Yang via Bookmarklet

Ariely contends that one reason people oppose the bailout is "because they want revenge on the companies that helped lead us into this disaster. Even though they know they will lose money and it doesn’t help them at all, at a very basic level a part of them want to see the companies suffer." He cites a study where participants took revenge even though it was unprofitable to do so. - Tom Stocky via Bookmarklet
OK, I will admit that this plays some part in my opposition to the bailout. But what I'm really questioning these days: is this really necessary? I've seen enough economists and experts question that to start to revisit my earlier assumption that it must be done. Kind of feels like the war to me, where everyone (including me) was assuming a certain fact and it turned out not to be true. - Mike Yang
I don't want revenge. I want the dollar to remain strong and inflation to stay low. I want the stock market and the real estate markets to drop back to where they should be if there wasn't a bubble since 2003. This seems healthier to me than prolonging the problem and possibly creating more bubbles and bad behavior that could crash even bigger later. - Chris White
It's the single greatest opportunity to change the behavior of Americans and to get them to stop abusing credit and living beyond their means. http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITI... and http://www.realclearpolitics.c... (second one I have a few quibbles with be mostly on point) - AJ Kohn
AJ, thanks for the good articles. - Chris White
@Chris: No problem. Important stuff is good to pass along ;) - AJ Kohn
I'm with Mike: I've read the cases that get made that such a bailout is necessary; they haven't convinced me. I agree a bailout *might* be needed, but for many (very rational) people might be needed + $700Bn = No - j1m
Why do you want the dollar to stay strong? - Jim Norris
Jim, because I don't think real estate and stocks are reasonable places for savings, and I'm not sure where to store the gold. - Chris White

I think it was an Obama win. Very impressive. Let's see what America thinks. - Chris Baskind
Analysts on POTUS are saying McCain won - Katy Southern
I think McCain looked like an old elitist and Obama appeared to care about the country. - Mathew Ballard
CNN folks say Obama held his own, but that's probably good enough, given that foreign policy was supposed to be Obama's weak point. - steplow is Steve
I hear both "Obama held his own" and "it's a draw"; but few saying McCain or Obama solidly took it. - Pete Delucchi
McCain has the clear takeaways for the audience -- I'm experienced, Obama can't handle it. Can't think of Obama's takeaway. That makes it edge to McCain for me. But Obama appeared credible on foreign policy, so should be fine. - Mike Yang
McCain was stronger than I thought he'd be, but Obama answered the questions, clarified his positions, and gave substantive answers for future work. McCain was all buzzwords and "Obama doesn't understand," which is not enough. - Ayşe E.
Getting more diversity of opinion on POTUS now. - Katy Southern
I felt it was a draw, too. I didn't see anyone do particularly well. I liked my candidate's performance, but did he win it? Geh... - thepete
Before the debate, I read an analysis that all Obama had to do was appear leader-like and credible next to the more experienced McCain on this issue. He achieved that and more. - Sean O'Maverick
Obama talked about his vision, his plan. All McCain ever talks about is himself. That speaks volumes to me - Aaron Krug
I think Obama won. Every time McCain tried to attack him, he's counterattack was precise and definitive. - Alejandro S.
It was so refreshing to have a debate between two reasonably intelligent people! McCain sounded very competent and made a lot of good points, but ultimately he didn't come across as a vibrant, dynamic leader. He seemed to me to represent stasis and keeping things more or less the same. Obama didn't show any of the weakness that I was afraid he might show, and instead seemed to be a strong AND vibrant leader. I call him the winner just because I agree with more of his policies. :) - Emotion Tad
I agree. It was surprisingly close. But Obama was more focused, McCain was more sentiment and rambling, and I made up my mind a long time ago. - Mark Czerniec
I support Obama, but I will say that McCain did a better job than I expected. They both handled and avoided issues about equally. And in part because I support a speedy withdrawal from Iraq, I thought Obama killed the actual foreign policy portion of the debate. - Squirrel Girl
I was happy to see a serious debate with serious people. Both came ready with answers and seemed to understand the issues. The differences are their stance on said issues. - Eric @ CS Techcast
It will be interesting to see if the VP debates are equally serious and meaty - Sally Church
Sally I did not drink tonight --- for the VP debate, if it happens, I think i might crack open a bottle...LOL - Ruth Ferguson
McCain did better. I think he won. - Colide81 (James)
If you wanted to see a one sided debate, the veep debate will be it. The question will be if Biden is accused of attacking or being unfair to Palin a la Gore v. Bush 2000. It's obvious from recent interviews she is not really ready for a big time debate, let alone a 15 minute press conference. - Eric @ CS Techcast

@Ana +1 Not being a cog is one of the things I really like about my current work. Barry Schwartz says in _The Paradox of Choice_ that people with many choices (e.g., of jam) are less likely to choose any, or if they do, to feel satisfied with the choice they made. The opportunity costs make all the alternatives seem unattractive. I think that conversely, knowing that you are one of many equally good choices to do a given job makes it much less satisfying. Maybe the jam feels the same way? ;-) - Ruchira S. Datta

"Some people are actually so stupid that they think horns make things happen. They actually believe their car comes with a magic button in the middle of the steering wheel that can change reality. Suddenly, I became aware of the constant chorus of beeping all around me--the kind that's always present in a big city, and the kind you simply tune out like you do crickets in the country. In every case, I realized the drivers stuck in traffic all around me were using their horns not to communicate information but simply in a vain attempt to change what was happening to them. It was as though they thought sitting in congestion was a bad TV show, and that by honking they might somehow change the channel and be transported to a clear roadway." - Mike Yang via Bookmarklet
