this is fuckin awesome! NO MORE MIDDLE-MEN! suge!
- vijay
actually there is middle-men: "Rather than store the content on a third-party server, as in the traditional data-sharing model, the content remains on your computer; your friends communicate with your computer using local connections, or, if this is not available, some server-side Opera technology will aid in establishing a connection.'
- minus-one
Well, this is like removing one of the many layers of the middle men. If we think about it, there will always be one layer of middle-men, the ISPs.
- vijay
this is so exciting to me! The first step towards a completely open and free internet.
- vijay
dude! you know what? let's try sharing some files right now! :D
- vijay
wait! did you read the TOC? --->- "By signing up for a My Opera account you warrant that you will NOT upload files, images, code, materials, or other information or content ("Content") that is obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, threatening, or that violates any laws or third-party rights, hereunder but not limited to third-party intellectual property rights." FAIL!!
- vijay
anyway, we'll think about that later. Technically we aren't uploading anything to My Opera so.
- vijay
what happens when you try to do a transfer? where does it fail?
- vijay
you know what's missing? A "Friends" list. Then I can drag and drop files onto your name and boom!... shared! The current way is toooo cumbersome!
- vijay
If the data leaves my computer and I allow a third party permission to store it, then there's no longer any control left to me in practice is there? For instance the folder I just shared, if Opera caches that (for whatever time period), it's no longer under my control. They can continue to cache it without my knowledge as long as they want.
- vijay
or in better words, thinking over all possible consequences.
- vijay
yes, but u can have one folder cached and another peer-to-peer
- minus-one
my concern is simple, if I turn OFF caching from my admin, will Opera be honest and turn it OFF or will they behave like the usual middle-man and continue caching and transmitting the data (for whatever reason) behind my back?
- vijay
it's a question of trust. And the best way to answer is to be on the safe side and NOT trust a third party. In this case, the result is to NEVER give them "official" permission to cache anything. This is what I think.
- vijay
we'll know soon. In this age users make the decisions, not companies(most of the time). So I'm kinda confident that in the end we won't be completely screwed.
- vijay
overall i think it's a step back - people want their stuff online. but it'll find its niche, of course. e.g. web server would be a cool way to share a site while testing it locally (but there's no php/mysql support, so it's not very useful so far)
- minus-one
It's a step back only if you turn your computer/Opera OFF. Otherwise it's a step forward. : ) As usual, Opera is doing things before everyone else and then others will re-cycle the same ideas to make it popular. :D

dayum! Imagine GoogleWave + Unite! wow! This is what GITS has been predicting for years!
- vijay
GoogleWave goes in the opposite direction, it's more about online collaboration
- minus-one
I can run google wave on my own system(server) and collaborate with other systems in a (ideally) open and free(dom) network.
- vijay
Could Google or an add-on put a similar feature to Unite within Chrome. That would be amazing (maybe NatCl http://code.google.com/p...?).
- Jérôme
hey! Jerome! You're on wave? dayum! T-T My invite hasn't come yet!
- vijay
eventually every browser will. Few years from now Unite will be what "browser tabs" are today.
- vijay
I'm still waiting for an invite, vijay. Your prospective of "all browser as servers" is very promising IMHO: the Web would have a very different face, and lots of privacy issues would just pshhhhhhh... :)
- Jérôme
check out Media Player (man it's cool...)
- minus-one
haha! Opera Unite had a HUGE FAIL right now. My power went out and though my notebook runs on battery, my internet doesn't. *sigh* India has a long way to go still :D

Jerome, a Free Open Web has been The Dream for many. But development on that has been slow because no one knows how to make money off a free and open web. And after thinking about it for nearly 2 years now, I don't think anyone actually can which is why --->- http://friendfeed.com/dffrnt...
- vijay
holy crap! you know what? anything with a URL and google boy will come to index and cache it. Time to take those public links down. Let's change the passwords and exchange the new links here --->- http://notebook.vjk2005.operau...
