Rooms support is now part of mioNews. We still have some minor tweaks and additions to make, but check it out and let us know what you think.
Rob Diana
Is there a way to view room feeds? It is non-obvious so I thought I would ask. Also, a help page would be nice :)
Rob - rooms are coming very very soon, it's on our short list. With rooms, it'll also open up using mioNews as a replacement for the typical FriendFeed+Google Reader combo a lot of people do. Simply create a private room with the blogs you're interested in and use mioNews to do your news reading. - Patrick Lightbody
There is an "our" for mioNews? Not a one man project? - Rob Diana
Rob - sorry, I never answered your question. It's basically just me on the product development side. There are a couple other folks advising and providing direction, but not actively coding or anything like that. - Patrick Lightbody
Rob, I'm commenting on this post, which is in a room, through a dev version of mioNews on my desktop. It's coming any moment now :) - Patrick Lightbody from mioNews

“As several others have done recently, I'm thinking of turning down the FF river of noise by eliminating FOAF posts. I know others are experiementing with this. What do you think? More or less cowbell?” - http://friendfeed.com/e...
patrick: a left side link in mionews for friends only along with the current FOAF would perhaps be interesting. - Tim Connors

mioNews is back online. Thanks to Ben (and presumably the FriendFeed team backing him up), I was informed of what specific rate limit mioNews hit and now we're back in business. Shouldn't happen again... *fingers crossed
Tim Connors
how do i post an original message to FF on mionews?
Tim, you currently can't, but that's definitely something we need to support. - Patrick Lightbody
Tim Connors
“I want a Techmeme without any business news. Just blog posts that make me smarter, or give me things to try. I think that's why I like FriendFeed so much. Far less "so and so buying so and so" kind of news, and more about "here's how to take a better pic - http://friendfeed.com/e...
patrick: can you do this already? - Tim Connors
Tim Connors
“Of these two, which do you check first at the start of your day -- email, or Friendfeed?” - http://friendfeed.com/e...
can mionews do email, google reader, friendfeed? - Tim Connors
definitely email, then facebook.. rarely friendfeed - brian
Tim Connors
do a FFmeme where you add up the #keywords and show the most popular topics of the day
Tim Connors
I wish FriendFeed or Google Reader would tell me who’s sharing my stories - http://onlinemediacultist.com/2008...
that's a cool idea... also a great way to find other people who share ideas in common with you - brian
Rob Diana
Is there a way to view the "me" tab? I was just looking for it and can't find anything.
rob. Not yet, but I'm just about to take off on a plane and was palling to add exactly that. - Patrick Lightbody
Rob Diana
Nice article covering mioNews no Mashable - http://mashable.com/2008...
Yes, it was written by me :) And I do love mioNews. - Rob Diana
Nicole Simon
I have >91K unread items. How do I mark "all all" read? :)
Someone else just asked for that feature yesterday. I'll get it built very soon. - Patrick Lightbody
Nicole how many people do you follow, I have not been on since I went on holiday last Thursday and I freaked when I saw that I had 10,964 unread items. Enough to want to make you trash your computer. Well maybe not. - Jon Erickson
add another vote for mark all feeds as read. standing at over 33K and want to read it all. - Rob Diana
Agreed, we should make it easy to get a "clean slate". I'll get it going soon. - Patrick Lightbody
Tim Connors
if i click on a topic, and there is one item, it should be marked as read automatically when i leave the topic
Jon Erickson
I am now able to mark all as read for individuals and for groups that I have aggregated without any problems on the rebooting, nice job.
Patrick Lightbody
mioNews now has keyboard shortcuts! They will be documented soon, but the keys are: j/k for next/prev entry, shift-n/shift-p for next/prev item on the left-hand-side, r to toggle read/unread state, s to share, c to comment, l to like, h to hate, and o to open the entry in a new window. Enjoy!
When adding a friends folder the comments window pops up whenever I use 'c' in the name (same with share and 's') - pb30
pb30 - can you tell me what browser you're using? - Patrick Lightbody
Nevermind, I just figured out the problem. We're pushing the fix live now. - Patrick Lightbody
Great news Patrick. - Jon Erickson
Brian
When I mark a person's post's all read, I can't click on anyone elses name and have it load there stories.
Thanks Brian - I'll check in to that. I know I haven't looked at "mark all as read" lately, so it's definitely possible a bug has slipped in. - Patrick Lightbody
Brian - Jon also noticed this. I'm working on it now. - Patrick Lightbody
Looks like this is fixed for me. Just wish there was a way to mark everything in my entire feed read. - Brian
Brian - I'll get that added to the list. I'm working on keyboard shortcuts right now, so once that's done I can look in to this request. - Patrick Lightbody
Brian - just an FYI - the next build (due out sometime tomorrow) will include your other feature request (unread count displayed in window title) - Patrick Lightbody
Nice, thanks for all the hard work. - Brian
Patrick Lightbody
Two additional feature requests: honor existing "hides" & change comment box from being modal - http://friendfeed.com/e...
Tim Connors
“FriendFeed search for American Idol. First 30 items go back 2+ days. Tweets, StumbleUpons, etc. Not a ton of discussion.” - http://friendfeed.com/e...
Patrick: would your engine make it easy to publish a techmeme equivalent for friendfeed? - Tim Connors
Possible. We can certainly get some visibility in to popular topics and stories quickly. - Patrick Lightbody
Tim Connors
“FF Petition: drop the default 9 and deliver random people or semantically matched people in the recommended friends option. See http://www.centernetworks.com/... for an explination. Like or comment to support” - http://friendfeed.com/e...
patrick: can you help on this? - Tim Connors
Yes, we can definitely do it. I'll get it added to our list of features. - Patrick Lightbody
Patrick Lightbody
Added an official bug/feature tracking tool for mioNews. - http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewfor...
Jon Erickson
Patrick, what is the time zone that is being used on mioNews, it seems to be about four hours ahead of PDT
Server is located in central timezone, which doesn't really explain what is going on. Fixing the timezones is also on my (quickly expanding!) list. I figure I will just honor the browser's reported timezone (rather than offer a setting). - Patrick Lightbody
Using the browser time zone makes sense to me. - Jon Erickson
John - the timezone issues should all be fixed. Let me know if you are still seeing problems. - Patrick Lightbody
Jon Erickson
Patrick, I am getting an error when I try to get to the friendfeed tab in mioNews. It is saying Date.monthNames[month] is undefined. Then it just hangs. I have to then refresh the browser and I can only access the home tab. If you want a screen shot let me know where to email it to.
Jon - thanks for the bug report. What browser/OS are you on? - Patrick Lightbody
I have duplicated the error on FF3.0 on both Vista SP1 and XP SP3. On Safari on Vista I get an error: http://mionews.com Undefined value. - Jon Erickson
Very strange. Screenshots should be helpful. You can email them to me at plightbo@gmail.com. - Patrick Lightbody
This is fixed now! - Patrick Lightbody
Tim Connors
Patrick Lightbody
Performance should be a lot better now. I spent some time this evening making the initial site load faster and tuning our backend systems. Unfortunately, I need to turn off the "relevance" feature until I can get the performance under control. In the meantime, everything else should be faster.
Jon Erickson
One other problem that I am having is that I am having some posts that seem to be sticky, I can not get rid of them even if I refresh my browser.
Jon - doh! Can you share any info about the entry that is stuck? title, etc? - Patrick Lightbody
There is a bunch of them, Old Store by Thomas Hawk, Ntino: Mashable ... by Hutch Carpenter, The Seesmic product short term roadmap by Loic Le Meur. The show as read then I refresh and they should up as unread again. In both FF 3.0 and Safari. - Jon Erickson
Also should there be the ability to mark all as read on home or in the friendfeed tab, for me it is disabled. It only works on individual friends. - Jon Erickson
OK, thanks I'll check it out - Patrick Lightbody
Jon - I've fixed the duplicate posts. Sorry for the problem. I'm also working on general performance right now. - Patrick Lightbody

Announcing mioNews - http://lightbody.net/blog...
Hey, Patrick...how long have you been working on this? You start before this? ;-) http://tinyurl.com/6rnvv6 - Ken Sheppardson
Ken - haha, actually, I hadn't seen that until just now. Very funny. I have been working on it on-and-off or over a year, with the recent Ext-based UI started back in December. But the switch to 100% FriendFeed didn't happen until two weeks ago. - Patrick Lightbody
Is this a for-profit project, or might you open source it at some point? I think you could recruit at least one other developer reasonably quickly if it were to open. :-) - Ken Sheppardson
Ken - it's could be for profit, so open sourcing it right away may not be possible. But our larger strategy doesn't require that it be closed source either, so the status could change quickly. Our main focus is the social/relevance ranking engine, so if we did open up that part would remain closed as an API (similar to FF's API). - Patrick Lightbody
Hmmm....well personally, I'd like to have just an Outlook-like interface to FF with the ability to sort by service, user, date, show threaded comments, mark items as read, etc. The recommendation aspect of it would be secondary. Heck, it'd be nice just to build a universal RIA UI that could handle FF, Twitter, Pownce, etc. If you were to open some of your stuff, I'd probably jump in on some of the basic UI functionality. Eclipse for Social Networks, so to speak ;-) - Ken Sheppardson
BTW, you mind sharing what you're using on the back end, i.e. language/platform? - Ken Sheppardson
Ken - it's Java-based. Jetty, Spring, DWR, iBatis, postgres, plus of course Ext :) - Patrick Lightbody

i tried to log on with my email and it would not take, but with the nickname it seemed to work..
Jon Erickson
Two questions regarding My Friends. One is there any way that I can sort them by name right now it seems like they are just in a random order. Second, I tried to set up a folder to group my friends, but I can not find any way to group my friends.
Jon - automatic sorting isn't possible (yet, but someone else asked for it yesterday), but you can drag and drop to reorder the list. I guess we need to make that feature more obvious. To group existing friends, just drag them in to the folder. - Patrick Lightbody
How do I drag when the folder is not visible? I have a long list of friends. Waiting for the Doh! answer. - Russellreno
The problem with drag and drop on FF is that I have a FF add-on that allows me to drag and drop text to open a new tab with a search results of that text. thus I try to d&d a friend and it opens a search for that name. Not working, nor did it work on Safari. - Jon Erickson
Russellreno - it *should* work like other drag operations in most applications: while dragging, move your cursor near the edge of the scroll pane and it should scroll. Should being the operative word. If you tried that, let me know and I'll investigate. - Patrick Lightbody
Jon - interesting. What add-on is that? I'll check it out and see if I can get it to work. Also, have you tried dragging the icon rather than the text? - Patrick Lightbody
D & D is sluggish. It works well if the folder is visible. I could also drag up the top and drop but that is too slow. - Russellreno
Dragging the icon works in both FF and Safari. The add on is QuickDrag - Jon Erickson
Now mioNews hangs when I click on a Friend icon. 4:38 EST. - Russellreno
Russellreno - strange. I just "sudo'd" to your account to check it out. Seems to work for some, but not others. I'll get in to it more today. Thanks for your patience. - Patrick Lightbody
Jon Erickson
Also keyboard short cuts for refresh, move to next, move to prior, read all, comment, like, hate, and go to Post would be great.
Agreed - we'll get this going very very soon. I miss them myself :) - Patrick Lightbody
Vince DeGeorge
Really liking this so far - with a few mentioned tweaks, this will be the perfect app. Fits in well with my gReader obsession!
I agree it fits my style really well. Thanks Patrick. - Jon Erickson
Looks promising, but when I tap on my friends, nothing happens. Using Windows XP and Firefox 3. - Sean McBride
Thanks Vince & Jon - you can expect incremental improvements every day or two :) Sean - we're experiencing intermittent errors that can often be "fixed" by reloading the page. Let me know if that doesn't fix the issue. - Patrick Lightbody
