Yes. (In our household, we have a spider cage--a little device so that we can move spiders from inside the house to outside without damaging them. I say "we" but my wife's usually the one doing it.) Spiders are almost always beneficial, esp. if there are flies around.

Let's also be clear that this is the first spider I've let go free in...many, many years.

It's called "The Bug House" (by Tierney Specialties in Stockton, CA): a mesh cylinder about 4" tall with one solid metal bottom and a removable metal top. You remove the top, put the cylinder on its side where the spider is, the spider crawls in, you cap the cylinder...

...take it outside, remove the top, set the cylinder down, shake it if the spider doesn't want to come out. Job done. We probably got it at Petco. No idea whether they're still available. Probably cost $5-$10.

I don't run into them often indoors but when I do I leave them alone. I like to think that they're doing their job keeping the interior free of two bigger pests in my eyes: mosquitoes & flies. That is, when they're not busy jumping into my mouth while I'm asleep. ;-p

Ants, flies, mosquitoes, and cockroaches can all die as Chris sees fit. Large spiders too. But spindle-legged spiders (like daddy longlegs) and most other bugs get a trip out the front door.

Why do ridiculously-proportioned spiders get a pass, Heather?
