Amplify: has removed the blogging feature all together, so I'll have to redirect my links elsewhere. What a odd and frustrating move!
- Kol Tregaskes
Cliqset: closed down as they didn't promote the service as a place to hang out. Feature-rich and in places better than FriendFeed but didn't have anyone using it.

Pip.io talked the talk but didn't walk the walk. The new version wasn't a great leap forward and certainly certain features we thought were coming didn''t.

Like we've been discussing for a long time we really need a place where we can distribute are content from our own hosted area on the net.
- Kol Tregaskes
That is always the weakness of centralised system: they can change it what ever way they want to focus on needs that dont match yours. All the work and content you put in vanishes down a black hole (cant imagine how I would get out of FF stuff I wrote a year ago, for example). There are quite a few self hosted options you can set up, and of course there was wave which was trying to go...

Pip.io demonstrated that you can't have a company run solely by developers. They launched too early. Pip.io had the chance to overtake Twitter and possibly even Facebook but they got overly excited and released too soon not understanding that once the public has assessed you, it's nearly impossible to get them to give you another chance. Kicking and Screaming - 1995, dir Noah Baumbach - Jandy's rating: ****1/2 out of ***** [EXPIRING 3/15] [BACK ON 4/2] - http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie...
"In writer-director Noah Baumbach's take on postcollege angst, Grover (Josh Hamilton) declines to go with his girlfriend (Olivia d'Abo) to Prague and decides to move in with other recent college grads who can't quite break the gravitational pull of campus. Together, the friends wrestle with leaving the past behind as they reluctantly step into adulthood. But they're afraid they'll end up like bartender and professional student Chet (Eric Stoltz)."
- Jandy
from Bookmarklet
This is easily one of the best films I've ever seen about the quarterlife crisis and that sense of post-college drifting. Watching it with a bunch of grad student friends, all of us in the humanities, certainly struck a chord - the kinds of feelings and situations in this film are pretty much exactly why most of us were in grad school. The film expires of Instant next week.
- Jandy
Off streaming now, but Netflix says "coming to streaming on 4/1." So yeah, the expirations probably seem worse than they are - stuff seems to come back a lot. Interestingly, this is Criterion, which means they're still making deals at some level with Netflix.

This is back on streaming as of last week. It's still quite worth watching. :)

"Tuesday, March 8th is Election Day in the City of Los Angeles, and in all even-numbered council districts folks have been busy campaigning. In order to learn where each candidate stands on bicycle issues, we sent a survey out to all of the candidates. Our goal with the survey was to not only provide information to the voting and bicycling public, but to help educate the candidates about some of the issues we have in the city regarding bicycles. This also provides a tool that allows us, as a community, to hold them accountable if they’re elected. We received responses from several of the candidates, but unfortunately, not all candidates responded as we had hoped. We realize that this low response rate means that we have lot of work to do to better educate and engage the candidates about the importance of biking (and walking) in order to make this a more effective tool for future elections in the City of LA and around the county. We hope that by doing candidate surveys, we can change...

I think expecting 128 GB of storage or a retina display is a bit much given there's no change in price between the iPad 1 and 2, and it's still cheaper than a lot of its competitors, but I would be surprised if they really did stick to 256 MB of RAM.
- Victor Ganata
Victor - yes, expecting it to sell at the same price point with 128 gigs of storage would be kind of silly; but that doesn't mean Apple couldn't have announced a 128 gig model for, say, $100 more than the current model. Regarding the retina display, didn't the iPhone 4 have the same price as the iPhone 3GS did when it was released?
- DAMMIT, MR. NOODLE
LolCurtz -that's true, the iPhone 4 did cost as much as the iPhone 3GS, but what I was thinking was that they probably haven't figured out how to make larger high resolution displays for relatively cheap. Same thing with 128 GB of storage, really. It's not super cheap yet, and would probably bump the price by way more than $100
- Victor Ganata
Victor - a 64 gigabyte SD memory card retails for around $125-175. I'm sure Apple could get their hands on something similar for a fraction of that price, meaning they could easily double the storage to 128 gigs without needing to increase the price of the device by more than $100. Heck, if they were to make the stupid things compatible with SD cards, we could all have an extra 64 gigs of space for little more than $100 extra.
- DAMMIT, MR. NOODLE
SD cards and flash storage not the same. SD cards aren't meant to act like hard drives.
- Rodfather
That would be true if the iPad used SD cards for storage, but they don't, and switching to a cheaper storage technology than what they do use would probably have an impact on performance and battery life.
- Victor Ganata
True, but the way iOS uses storage memory is very different than a desktop OS (a lot less writing) so it may work okay.
- Kevin Fox
from iPhone
Even on an old not-quite smart phone in 2007, I could tell a huge difference in access time when trying to run a J2ME app from an SD card vs internal storage. Maybe SD cards are much better now, but I would wager there's a reason why a 128 GB SSD is much more expensive than a 128 GB SD card
- Victor Ganata
SD card write speed is very slow. A class 10 SDHC card writes at 10MB/s. It uses a fairly simple controller compared to SSD's.
- Rodfather
And that explains why the pro DSL cameras still use Compact Flash.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
Nothing wrong with Compact Flash might also explain why pro DSL cameras still use it. Just because something is the shiniest and newest doesn't mean it's A) the best or B) needs to supplant something that's doing just fine.
- Derrick
Not sure why anyone was seriously thinking Apple would dramatically increase the screen resolution with a 'retina' display. The amount of video processing horsepower and increased power consumption to drive a 1920x1280 or 2048x1536, which are even multiples of the ipnone4 and ipad1 screen resolutions, would be ginormous for a portable device. Battery life would suffer greatly. Changing...

I liked Borders. B&N I could live without. Unhelpful. Predatory practices on students in their University partnerships
- Melanie Reed
Borders is better for buying. B&N is better for sitting and reading (comfier chairs).
- Jandy
The ones in Emeryville and Palo Alto are staying open. I prefer B&N to Borders anyway. The selection at B&N appears to be by intelligent people (or maybe algorithms), at Borders it seems thrown together by people who don't know what they're doing.
- Ruchira S. Datta
Interesting, Ruchira - I've had the opposite experience. If I'm looking for something in particular and it isn't on the best-seller list, chances are much higher that Borders will have it. Seems like Borders tends to buy fewer copies of more stuff and B&N buys more copies of less stuff. I used to hit Borders all the time to get lit-crit books for school, and B&N never had anything beyond Harold Bloom. Might depend on your field, though, I guess.

Yeah, that's what I meant. :p You can describe the structure more accurately than "backwards" but not without getting spoilery. Telling someone who hasn't seen it that it's "v-shaped" is not as useful in getting the general idea of the film across as "backwards".
