"100 votes (last month) > 30 votes (this month) -> items from this month are less popular -> will probably never see front page. Correct?"
- Pavel Senko
""Popularity = Votes ... Say last month was a very active month and popular records in that month received around 100 votes. This month is not very active in terms of traffic (assume it's a holiday season and your user base is rushing to beaches instead of hysterically seeking for items and casting votes) and as a result you've received an avarage of 30 votes for each item. Therefore, popular items from last month will probably never see the front page." - HUH?"

Ok, I have 5,061 subscribers. Seems crazy high for the engagement I see on my stream. Let's see how many of you actually exist around these parts: Comment plz! (Remember when I got called out a few months ago for not participating enough on FF? It worked!)
but I'm not a subscriber :) You can't really know, because as people comment this entry, all their followers get the "friend of a friend" item in their feed. Go figure who among those participants are subscribed to you.
- Jérôme Flipo
Sarrita - You do realize you're going to pull more than just your subscribers right? We're blasting this out to all our friends of friends too.
- Matthew DeVries
I have to admit, it's pretty fun to watch you guys comment in real-time. Good thing I have nothing else to do all day. Matthew DeV- yeah, I know, not a perfect system. I guess my point is that FF sub numbers are misleading, there are a lot of DOA accounts!!

Loved you on AOTS1000. How was the Chalula?

I feel Marty thinks TWiF is getting to be a real pain in the butt. Maybe you could all convince Leo to move it to San Fran? I'm sure he'd get even better guests/hosts to move to a 24/7 format...?

Hello Sarah. I think yours was the first feed I subscribed to when I joined FF.

Well I'm not hanging on every word, but I enjoy your stuff.

Just chose Blue Wave. I had AJ's script giving me a feel background,. however, I've switched to Chrome again due to CPU utilization issues with Flash + IE or Flash + Firefox in Vista. Anyone who suggests I dump Vista will be ignored; I don't want to go back to XP's Tablet Input Panel, and we aren't allowed to run Outlook or MS Office Communicator on Win 7 until our AD is upgraded.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
On my tiny netbook, Helvetica is perfection.
- Yolanda
I use Helvetica at work, where I use Chrome, but have to switch back to Fresh/default at home, since the themes conflict with the userscript I use at home (on Firefox).
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Helvetica so I don't have to see the candy colored classic theme when I am away from home. At home, I use userscripts to cover that up with something prettier.
- Amber, Random Time Lord
Helvetica, although to be honest, I'm using /search?q=list:<mylist>&embed=1&css=<mycss> more often
- Jason Wehmhoener
I used Helvetica for some days, but got rid of it soon. Now I'm back using a Helvetica script that runs in Styles, because I want to see icons underneath entries (and some other minor reasons).
- Ton Zijp
Guess I'm the only one using the Butterfly Corner. :D Also edited the Cleaner FF script for matching highlighting.

I'm with vijay. I must be old school, because I'm still rolling with classic. It's still the most functional, and gets in the way the least for me.

"It may be a case in general, however, my experience tells me something else. Six months ago we hired a guy who graduated in 08 (Senior UI Engineer position, 125K/y base, Mountain View, CA). We interviewed a lot of candidates (including very experienced ones and, I would even say, IT veterans) and he was like a super-star comparing to others. After half year I can say that we were right: he is really good. Well above expectations."

Google makes everybody believe they are loosing a lot on YouTube, because "...the perception of large losses at YouTube helps Google negotiate more favorable contracts with movie, TV and music studios licensing their video. What's more, copyright owners also are less likely to go to court in pursuit of unpaid royalties and damages if they believe... - http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id...
It might be both, in my opinion: 1) Google is loosing on YouTube but wants this loss to look cool; 2) Google is trying to underplay this loss implying that otherwise they would have loose much more on licensing and law-suites. Either way, it's well thought strategy.

“A teenager faces charges in a gruesome string of cat mutilations and killings that have horrified his neighbors and shaken animal lovers in two South Florida communities.” [I have no idea if this kid is guilty or not. He doesn't look like a cat-slicer, but he does look like someone I'd like to punch.]

Sick! I knew it was a kid. Destined to be a psychopath
- Shevonne
Sadly, those who abuse animals in their youth are much more likely to become offenders as adults. If it is him, I hope they put him in significant treatment.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
@Tina - yeah, I posted something about that a while ago... gonna dig it up now.
- Anthony Citrano
BTW, do we know that he abused them or just that he killed them? I agree animal abuse is - and ought to be - a crime. But if we decide that the mere *killing* of an animal is a jailable offense, we have a lot of criminals in this country, especially down there in the ol’ sun belt.
- Anthony Citrano
Anthony, I figured "Cat mutilations" was implying more than just a straight up animal killing.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I agree Tina, cutting them open up and removing their organs is more than just killing. My daughter lives in South Florida, she told me that people were concerned it might be some kind of Santeria or voodoo sacrifices.
- Sharon McPherson
@Tina and Sharon - the offender did this after the cats were dead, according to police anyway.
- Anthony Citrano
Why should people practicing Santeria or Voodoo be a subject for concern?
- Scott Ohlemacher
@Scott - I was just going to ask that, but in a more ridiculing manner. Thanks for saving me from myself. :)
- Anthony Citrano
Ugh, he looks pleased to have done what he did. I'd say that killing any living thing which results in that kind of 'satisfaction' shown in the picture, should result in criminal charges.
- Charlotte M
@Charlotte - so you know he's guilty? Wow, well I guess we can just skip the whole trial thing, then. Also, I assume you feel the same way about the many factory farm employees who love their jobs? (e.g. the Tyson employees in the recent PETA videos?)
- Anthony Citrano
For all we know, he could be a future cardiothoracic surgeon and U.S. Senator, though.
- Victor Ganata
I don't care if he would or would have not be a killer or US Senator in future. He has done terrible things consciously, he inflicted a lot of pain, and he has to serve time in prison, I hope for 158 years, not less.
- Pavel Senko
Anthony, I don't know he's guilty but I'm presuming, just as some would presume he isn't. The smirk in that mugshot kinda gives away his feelings about the whole thing, people's faces can give a hell of a lot of information that they don't reveal in other ways. I was going to edit my first comment to mention that I don't mean people doing it for their jobs, or people buying leather...

- Charlotte M
I'm also intrigued about "more arrests", with the possibility that it was a group of people doing it rather than an individual.
- Charlotte M
@charlotte - I hear you, but if we decide an act is criminal based only on one's personal *reason* for doing it, that's sort of messed up. Gleefully torturing animals is a crime - in my opinion - regardless of whether one is being paid to do it or just doing it for fun.
- Anthony Citrano
The thing is there's two different lines, KFC killing chickens for their restaurants is legal (as much as I hate it being so as I'm vegetarian) and that's just how it goes. PETA try to change the law 24/7 but it stands. I'd say that if a person enjoys slamming those chickens against the wall then they need therapy, but they're not criminals in the eyes of the law. This kid, if found...

- Charlotte M
Yeah.... you're right, the mug shot doesn't really help him.
- The Letter M
Anthony, I realize he removed the organs after they were killed, the point I was agreeing with Tina about is that removing them was an over-kill. And I didn't say that Santeria or Voodoo "should" be a concern, simply relaying that this is what some people in South Florida were talking about.
- Sharon McPherson
I don't understand what santeria or voodoo have to do with this story. People are always looking for something they don't understand to blame instead of just admitting that some kids exhibit tendencies of sociopathic behavior. And as an aside, animals are not tortured when they are sacrificed in a voodoo or santeria ritual (just wanted to throw that in).
- Trish R
@Trish - and all indications that I have seen are that no animals were tortured here. As with my other post yesterday, I find the double-standard interesting.
- Anthony Citrano
This trooper should be fired. He acted like a maniac.
- Pavel Senko
You begin to wonder how many people in such powerful roles act like this though -- I hear so much about corrupt cops lately. I don't know when to believe anymore that a cop is *good*.
- Tamar Weinberg
yeah this was messed up. I'd expect some troopers to escort people in a rush after they see that they're _in a rush_... i saw another video of people rushing to the bed side of a dying family member, making a right turn on a red light to the hospital (yes i know illegal) and then having the officer block the driver while the rest of the family ran into the hospital. i know we only see the bad examples but do officers need to be 100% in control once threat has been assessed?
