BOOK REVIEW: 'Our Black Year': An Affluent African American Family Resolves to Patronize Only Black-Owned Businesses for a Year - http://www.huntingtonnews.net/22935
"It sounded like a good idea when Maggie and John Anderson came up with it: Patronize only African-American owned businesses for a year. But, as Maggie Anderson, with co-author Ted Gregory, writes in "Our Black Year: One Family's Quest to Buy Black in America's Racially Divided Economy" (PublicAffairs Books, 320 pages, $25.99) buying "Black" turned out to be much more complicated."

"The few stores owned by Blacks had a poor selection of substandard merchandise and very little fresh fruits and vegetables. Liquor stores predominate, with the only food on sale of the junk and snack variety. The Andersons discovered a Black-owned grocery on Chicago's South Side, traditional home of most of the city's African Americans, and even located a Black farmer who sold fresh...

"It comes in a black and a white premium leather version, with the Converse star logo being replaced with the star icon from the iconic video game. Furthermore the colors of the sneaker have been adapted to the signature colors of the Super Mario character and the Super Mario Bros., Mario and Luigi, are printed on the heel of the sneakers."

Whedon: "You know, things like Secret Life [of an American Teenager] and Juno and Knocked Up – even if they pretend to deal with abortion, the movies don’t even say the word “abortion.” It’s something that over a third of American women are going to decide to have to do in their lives. But people are so terrified that no one will discuss the reality of it — not no one, but very few popular entertainments, even when they say they’re dealing with this issue, they don’t, and won’t. It’s frustrating to me. I don’t think Buffy should have a baby. I don’t think Buffy can take care of a baby. I agree with Buffy. It’s a very difficult decision for her, but she made a decision that so many people make and it’s such a hot button issue with Planned Parenthood under constant threat and attack right now. A woman’s right to choose is under attack as much as it’s ever been, and that’s a terrible and dangerous thing for this country. I don’t usually get soap box-y with this, but the thing about Buffy...

"Voices arguing for a woman's right to choose in America's anguished debate over abortion have discovered an unexpected ally: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The new issue of the Buffy comics, published on Thursday in the US, sees the Chosen One taking some time off from staking vampires through the heart to deal with what publisher Dark Horse called "a rather personal problem". Season nine continues, after issue five's cliffhanger revelation that the Slayer was pregnant, with Buffy deciding what to do about the unwanted pregnancy – the result of a drunken night at a party. Eventually she decides to have an abortion."

I don't usually get soap box-y with this, but the thing about Buffy is all she's going through is what women go through, and what nobody making a speech, holding up a placard, or making a movie is willing to say," Whedon told Entertainment Weekly"

I love it. The added dimension meshes so well. My favourite album of the very early year thus far.

Same here. I love their acoustic flamenco but the electric guitar, big band sound, afro-latin rhythms. I didn't know they started as heavy metal buskers.

Josh: it was a seasonal thing last year at this time, so it is no longer possible. We may have to bring it back by popular demand, but for now the entries you see are all from last year.

"And there's the key: execution. Hip Hop fans are making the excuses for Common that they wouldn't for 50 (who got the go-ahead when his target was a singing Ja Rule) solely because they can get with Kanye's music, but not Drake's. But why not admit it? Would it be so bad to come to terms with the fact that you love music for the sake of music's quality, rather than because an emcee's wardrobe or rhetoric comports with what you think is masculine or "real?" If you think "Fancy" is the worst song every recorded, why not just say that instead of pretending that masculinity (or some idealized notion of "real" Hip Hop) is what's relevant here? It's a cop out, it's lazy, and it's hypocritical."

This is why I tapped out on hip-hop. I'm too old (and so are they, frankly) to be so petty over stupid ish. Good grief. Do you see Mumford & Sons beefing with Kings of Leon?
- Derrick
Word. There was good Hiphop this year, and Common's album was one of those, but when you have to read a blog to figure out who the hell is rapping on the latest posse cut because they all sound so similar, and the beef is all Twitter, then there needs to be some reset in the game.

"You shoved it into your face as a little kid and used it to soak up cheap beer in college, but now it's time to elevate your grilled cheese sandwich to grown-man territory. "Think of it as a blank canvas," says Thomas Keller, who serves a buttery Gruyère-and-brioche version at Bouchon Bakery in New York City. In other words, experiment. Once you upgrade from Kraft Singles and Wonder Bread, you'll realize there's nothing Keller can do to a grilled cheese that you can't. Just remember a few tricks: Use a low, even source of heat—too hot and the bread will burn before your Gruyère gets a chance to melt—and let the finished product rest for a minute, like you would a fresh-off-the-grill porterhouse. It's not 3 a.m. after a frat party, and patience, like a quality Gouda, is a sign of maturity."

I haven't had it yet! After dinner. If there's any room. Normally, despite the colored sugar explosion, the cake itself isn't very sweet. Kind of like a coffee cake.
- Derrick
It was good! The top was incredibly sweet (it's all sugar!) but the filling and the cake itself was really well done. Carnival season has arrived.
- Derrick
Scrape it off. (EDIT: Especially if you have one that's filled. Someone brought a cream cheese filled one today to work; you really don't need all THAT much. I do the same with heavily frosted cake and cupcakes too.)

"Chuck D of Public Enemy has never shied away from making social and political commentary through his music. Now, the rap legend is bringing together some of the best in old-school hip-hop to stand up for the plight of the homeless. This Sunday, he's gathering some of hip-hop's best -- including himself, Cypress Hill and Kurupt of The Dogg Pound -- to perform at a free concert on Skid Row this coming Sunday at a concert that's being called Operation Skid Row Music Festival and Occupy Skid Row Music Festival. The goal, he says, is to raise awareness about the plight of our city's homeless population. "Somebody needs to speak up for these folks," he said. "This is what the music is about." The rapper added that people who believe hip-hop is all about violence and negative messages haven't been listening hard enough."

"From Egg in a hole, Toad in a Hole and Eggy in a Basket to Hobo Eggs, it seems that everyone calls this breakfast treat by a different name. But from now on I will call it Egg in a Nest thanks to a comment left on my Flickr photo! An egg tucked into a piece of bread and fried?"

I grew up on these... had 'em about once a week. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's the first recipe I learned to cook for myself. That or grilled cheese sandwiches. Oh, in our house, they were an "Egg-in-one" :P
- Brent
My husband called them Gas House Eggs. We never knew why. Maybe guys living on the work site made them?
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
I'd never heard of or seen such a thing until a few months ago on FF when someone posted about these. I tried to make it once since then but I think I did it wrong because the whites were still runny when the toast was dark.
- Rochelle
I thank the film "V for Vendetta" for introducing me to this delicious item of food, although I curse them for calling it "Eggy in a Basket" and saying it's an English delicacy. This meal's excellence quotient can be increased with the addition of bacon.
- Slippy
And they must be cooked in butter -- accept no substitutes :)
- Brent
Of course, you mean butter that has first fried bacon, don't you? :-)
- Slippy
My favorite name so far? One-eyed toast.
- Derrick
Well, I was going to make this for breakfast but the only sliced bread we have is a sourdough loaf and it wasn't tall enough to cut a circle out of so I just cooked two eggs and set them on top of a slice of sourdough toast. With ketchup. Yep.
- Rochelle
I've seen this but I don't think I've ever made it.
- Eric
Egg frames are what folks in my family always called them.
- Katy S
Rochelle, keep practicing. Much like grilled cheese, you need a medium to medium-high heat to give the eggs time to cook but not burn the toast. Also, I cover the frying pan to help set the whites and, if necessary, flip it once at the end.
- Laura Norvig
Laura, will do! When I cook eggs, I always flip once because I like the yolks to have a cooked layer on the top.
- Rochelle
It's also fun to use small cookie cutters to get different shapes in the middle. We have used a star - it's not perfect but it's cute.
- Laura Norvig
I still didn't get around to making this yet. Maybe for dinner.
- Derrick
I seem to recall knowing it as Toad in a Hole from childhood and it's definitely tasty. However, my English grandmother rarely made it and almost always made us what she called Eggy which involved toast cut into strips which we then dipped into soft boiled eggs (held in egg cups) so similar effect in a very different form.
- Maria Niles
I just made these for lunch! I was so worried about the whites being runny that I overcooked the yolk. I'm out of practice. They were still great though. Wade had a candy cane shape and I had a star. He said he wants to eat them every day. And he's asking for another one right now.
- Laura Norvig
We call them one-eyed Egyptians since I can remember.

Camel's eyes here. And yes, delicious. Also, anna, that sounds delicious and sort of like what I do with poached (or fried) egg on savory oats.

Toad in the hole is sausages cooked in Yorkshire puddings, preferably with lashings of onion gravy.
- Helensleydale
I saw an old movie once where they called them Gas House eggs, we call 'em Hole in Ones.
- LibrarianOnTheLoose
NOT "toad in the hole"—A Toad in the Hole is a sausage embedded in a Yorkshire pudding.

We called them 'One Eyed Egyptians' when growing up. Now I call them One Eyed EggJipShans

I might have made a mistake by telling my family that I had made these for myself recently. My wife is asking for this now. :)

"Mother Jones' creative director Tim J Luddy on the 15 sketches in this slideshow: When sex columnist Dan Savage got ticked off at then-Senator Rick Santorum, who had compared homosexuality to bestiality and pedophilia, Savage invited his readers to come up with an outrageous sexual neologism for Santorum's last name. Three years later, the resulting site, spreadingsantorum.com, continues to come up above Santorum's own campaign site in Google searches. In looking for an illustrator to create artwork to accompany this Mother Jones story about Santorum's Google problem this campaign season, I knew I needed someone who could be both politically astute and in-your-face. The name Zina Saunders occurred immediately."

"A great grilled cheese sandwich is a seriously seductive creature. Warm, tangy and gooey, it should be absolutely irresistible. But here’s the problem: Even ordinary grilled cheese sandwiches, the kind made with white bread and Velveeta, are pretty appealing. Which means that too many people are willing to settle for good enough."

I make a mean grilled cheese! Definitely go with grated, not sliced, cheese. And butter the bread not the pan! I like the idea of adding allium; I usually put in sunflower seeds, and/or tomato slices
- RudĩϐЯaЯïan
I should try grating some onion into the next one I make. I like adding some veggies: sweet bell peppers, spinach, alfalfa sprouts, etc. Basically whatever I happen to have on hand. And I always add mustard.
- John (bird whisperer)
I've never added mustard. Huh. Need to try that now.

I go all dry with my Grilled slices of wheat with layers of cheese... Healthier in the long run. Although.. adding a slice of tomato sounds awful good.
