"The first bite was a satisfying mouthful. The bun, while not superior, was a serviceable commercial choice that had the sponginess that contained the burger. It also had a little grilling on it to add that extra layer of texture. The cheese was melted beautifully so as to provide smoothness without turning into a fondue. The onions were near perfection, as they had been grilled just into caramelization without losing their pleasing bite."

Mark, why do you normally hate them? Not interested in movies? Most matchups disinterest you? Just curious as to the reasons why you dislike them, and what you thought could make you like them more? We're always open to suggestions to improve Flickchart.
- Nathan Chase
Run Lola Run was essentially a student film with style, where The Matrix combined elements of so many various genres and story archetypes and innovative special effects to reinvent action films. It's impossible to discount the level of influence The Matrix has had on the industry, and other filmmakers since its release. Even if The Matrix itself was derived of past ideas, it was its...

Usually when I have hard ones like this I ask myself which I'd rather watch RIGHT NOW and choose that way. In this case, honestly, I might throw up my hands and watch something else entirely rather than have to choose.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Yeah, this is still sitting there taunting me. Nathan, if I completely close out of the site and then open it again later, is that as bad as hitting F5? (Although I know Lola's higher right now, so by refusing to choose I would be tacitly choosing Lola....)
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Hmmm, sounds like The Matrix is winning the popular vote. I actually never did choose. I left it open though, at work. Maybe I'll decide tomorrow. I just seriously love them both so much.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
I like both a lot, but I could probably watch The Matrix multiple times. RLR would just wear me out and make me want Gatorade.
- Derrick
Derek, you're strange. :) Joe, THANK YOU. See, I'm not the only one stymied by this.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
this is one of the ones I would wait on and think over, and then eventually I'd forget and close the browser without being able to choose.
- Joe Pierce
That is probably what will happen, Joe. :) At some point tomorrow I'll be like, I don't need Flickchart open right now...*close*...uh-oh, I forgot to pick between Matrix and Lola. OOPS.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Come on...you gotta pick The Matrix just for the Lobby Shooting Scene.
- Alex Scoble
Why are these two movies competing btw? Just want to know which one we liked better?
- Fleagle
Fleagle, it's a website called Flickchart (www.flickchart.com - Nathan Chase, who commented above, is one of the creators). It gives you a set of two movies to rank against each other and you choose which one you like better, then it builds your list of favorites based on the way you rank them. This matchup came up randomly yesterday, I didn't orchestrate it.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Lola Rennt, though I did like Matrix. The Princess + the Warrior was also pretty good (same director & star as Lola).
- Lo is a Quitter
Wow. Gotta check out this Flickchart. Love the idea. Back to the debate. Gotta pick The Matrix here. So many reasons...too many to mention. Not fair to count the bad sequels against the original Matrix movie. The first one is just fantastic. Ignore the other two. Run Lola Run was a great movie, but relied too much on one gimmick. It was a gimmick that worked, but still made the movie sort of a one-trick pony.
- Fleagle
See, I think there's a lot more going on in Run Lola Run than just the surface conceit - there's a lot philosophically underneath it, from the nature of time to the exploration of multiple possible worlds (reminded me a lot of Borges' short fiction) to ethics and morality. Plus the evocation of multiple cinematic styles (animation, montage, Godardian absurdity, music video), yet making something wholly original at the same time. And The Matrix does a lot of the same things - I really, really can't decide.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
The Matrix is a classic, very well executed Hero myth from being "the one" to defeating death (all heroes in the classical tradition must defeat death)
- RAPatton
from iPhone
Run Lola Run really WANTS to have much more going on that what is on the surface, but it just really isn't there.
- Fleagle
Lola defeats death, too, RAP. :p And Lo, yes - I love Princess and the Warrior, too. Glad to hear you liked it! I don't find that many people who do.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Uh-oh, Flickchart reloaded the matchup when I opened the browser this morning. OH WELL. And everyone, I'm not denying the awesomeness of the Matrix in defending Run Lola Run. Both films are in my top twenty (out of over 1400).

"The MTV Awards did not go well for Kanye West, as the world now knows. But even before he hijacked the mike from Taylor Swift, things were heading south. "Back in February, we reported that Disney wants to release a new hand-drawn animated movie every two years. The Princess and the Frog is already out in theaters, with an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and is set to expand nationwide this weekend. But what's next for Disney? We've heard rumblings of other projects in the works and, of course, the new Winnie the Pooh movie will be hand-drawn, but is there more? Brendon Connelly from SlashFilm got a small update on another new hand-drawn Disney project called The Snow Queen. It's apparently an old project that fell apart a few years back and has been dusted off again recently."

"Recipe for “Butter Milk” in Chinese courtesy of Flower Grass Garden. Ingredients: 1/2 cup of non-fat powered milk 1/3 cup of granulated sugar, dial down for less sugary result. 1/3 cup of salted butter 1/2 egg yolk 2 slices of 1″-thick brick toast. Margarine is actually a better substitute than butter as it melts much quicker into the bread, but a true carb whore will always drop her panties faster upon the smell of real butter. Here comes the tough part: don’t use regular bread and don’t even think about doubling up Wonder Bread. I use dense toast found at Asian bakeries, may it be Japanese/Chinese or otherwise. The last time around, the source of brick toast was Domie’s Bakery in Rosemead. The cashier girl, knowing the ultimate purpose for said loaf, smiled wide & deftly sliced the 6″ loaf of bread into fours, resulting in slices that are 1.5″ thick. This is good. Girls like it thick, so they tell me."

Yeah, lots of breakfast places served us toast like this in Taiwan. Frequently they made it with different flavoured butters, like coconut or chocolate.

VICTORY IS IMMINENT! I never could find the Japanese bakery in town, but I'd totally forgotten about a little market I used to live near named Hibari. Fortunately, Asian people know where to get Asian foods; imagine that! http://friendfeed.com/minimag...

I like the somewhat similar but easier-to-make sweetened condensed milk toast - you just spread a whole bunch of sweetened condensed milk on toast and pop it in the toaster oven.
- Andrew C
I like the subtitles on this post. I kinda doubt sweet butter brick toast will get you an Asian girl in Vancouver; I mean, I think you have a decent chance of just finding this at your local bubble tea/snacks joint. But haha to "smarter than Chowhounders." =)
- Andrew C
If I thought this would make an Asian girl--or any other girl, for that matter--sleep with me, I would not make the toast!

I suck! Last night, I bought milk in case mine had gone sour (it had) and butter, in case I was out. Got home after a birthday party and discovered all my eggs were bad. Bought eggs today, then got home and realized the recipe said POWDERED milk, which I've never had in my life. This may be worse than the misadventures I had after reading Mona's moaning about steamed mussels and fries. FML?
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
aw, minimage. are you sure your eggs are bad? i think they're actually good from 3-5 weeks after the sell by date.

Although, how many times can you re-tell an origin story? My goodness. It seems, however, that with both Clark and Bruce not currently playing the leads (or in general continuity) in their signature books right now, this is a decent way to keep them around.

"When you look at the death statistics for breast cancer in African-American women and compare them to white women, it's stunning. Beginning in their 20s, into their 50s, black women are twice as likely to die of breast cancer as white women who have breast cancer. In older black women, cases of breast cancer decline, but the high death rates persist. Overall, breast cancer deaths have been declining for nearly a decade (by 2 percent annually), yet deaths of African-American women have been dropping at a much slower pace. In 2009, an estimated 40,170 women will die from breast cancer. Nearly 6,000 will be African-American women."

One of theories talked about in the piece is just stress of being black. Said to age one internally. Socio-economic, educational, lack of opportunity, etc. I find that premise very interesting, as there really weren't any other tangible explanations.
- Derrick
I'll flesh out my thought. Poor people tend to not seek or receive adequate, preventative medical treatment. I bet a shiny nickel if you polled poor people the event of breast cancer were to be very high.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
It may also be partly genetic MVB. There is a particular variant of cancer that strikes black women -- black American, African, Afro-Caribbean -- particularly hard.
- tiffany
In the article, MVB, it said that it affected all African-American women equally, even those with the wealth and means to seek out top notch medical treatment.
- Derrick
Hmm... A lot of speculation and no real answers. See, this is where government study money should be going instead of steak sauce research.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I heard the story this morning driving into work and it was sad; the researcher had lost three friends: age 32, 36, and 40.
- Derrick
mvb, it's called triple negative breast cancer: http://www.tnbcfoundation.org/underst... ... part of it is screening, but there is some question about the aggressiveness of it. robin roberts on good morning america (formerly of ESPN) had triple negative breast cancer.
- tiffany
T, that's it. I was trying to think of the phrase, but it's frightening. I didn't realize the heft of breast cancer in black women was so great. I'm more than curious now about the stress incurred just by the nature of being black and a minority and what else it might mean for black people.
- Derrick
It is scary. That's why it should be a research target. The more that is known, the more the chance of an answer.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I'm wondering if this variant of breast cancer was what killed a family friend (who happened to be a local news reporter). I also wonder if there are more fine-grained genetic tendencies to get this cancer, i.e. is it found more often in some mostly black families and not others. I think that another person in the family friend's family also got (and I think died from) breast cancer. No one in my immediate or extended family on either side has gotten breast cancer of any sort.
- Kamilah Gill
Derrick, I heard that story too and it really gave me pause, especially in light of the new guidelines regarding screening. Too often, we approach medicine with a one-size-fits-all approach (and that's for those lucky enough to be able to even access it!) and it causes so much unneeded suffering when something like a tumor isn't caught early because the patient didn't fit the demographic for routine screening.
- vicster
Certainly we have a lot of work to do with making access to care more equitable, but the data so far with triple-negative breast cancer does seem to point to still-undetermined genetic factors contributing as well.

"Arguably one of the nicest MCs that ever graced a mic Black Thought has constantly been a purveyor of advanced lyricism over banging beats. In 2001, The Roots-frontman was scheduled to release his highly anticipated solo album Masterpiece Theatre. However, due to label quarrels the project has never hit the shelves, thus causing major discontent among his loyal fans. Consequently, most of the recorded songs appeared on The Roots’ Phrenology album. Fortunately though, some of the unreleased joints have gradually found their way to the internet now – Mona Lisa being the latest. Check it out."

"At a glance, the far corner of the main floor of J&R Music looks familiar to anybody old enough to have scratched a record by accident. There are cardboard boxes filled with albums by the likes of Miles Davis and the Beach Boys that could be stacked in any musty attic in America. But this is no music morgue; it is more like a life-support unit for an entertainment medium that has managed to avoid extinction, despite numerous predictions to the contrary. The bins above the boxes hold new records — freshly pressed albums of classic rock as well as vinyl versions of the latest releases from hip-hop icons like 50 Cent and Diddy and new pop stars like Norah Jones and Lady Gaga."

"If the world suddenly flooded with gravy, the buttermilk biscuits at Pine State would make handy lifeboats. While you can order them smothered with diet-wrecking sausage gravy, these light mounds of flour and butter are also sturdy enough to bookend the Reggie Deluxe, a four-layered beast of a sandwich stacked with fried chicken, a fried egg, cheddar, bacon, and gravy. It’s one of five biscuit sandwiches that earned Pine State Biscuits its reputation back when it was merely a rickety booth at the Portland Farmers Market at Portland State University. Yet Pine State’s got plenty more methods of biscuit delivery. Smear them with homemade pimiento cheese, or even gobble them up—gasp!—plain. But it’s a test of biblical proportions to resist the scent of the sublimely creamy sausage or shiitake-mushroom gravy bubbling away on the stove."
