"It tastes like if you were making a S'more but instead of using 2 graham crackers to make the sandwich, you replaced one of them with a chocolate chip cookie. So this is a nostalgic recipe that tastes just as good as the S'mores you remember."

I have a one unit pass/fail thing I have to do in June, but it's a moot point (it's a prep course for the comprehensive exam I took and passed in March) so everything's pretty much done. I'll get my degree in early August.

sniff...I remember when he was just thinking about these strange library folk. and that he might go to school. I feel like a proud older brother.
- ♫410 I Coach 'em Up♫
Thanks so much everyone. Can't wait to have my degree in hand in August. So much has happened in just a couple years and you've seen most of it and put it with my rants and eye rolling. Big shout out to the librarians who also had my back and talked me down from the ledge multiple times. I don't know what the future has in store for me, but I feel confident and able to do my part with everything I've learned and experienced.

Steve, that's what so great about aikido! (Although I do have some question as to whether this was a demonstration...)

Watch how he dips down to catch her and straightens up to lift her with his right arm. She has incredible athleticism, and he really sells the move.
- Steele Lawman
Yeah, it did seem to me like he was in on it. However, I wonder whether the move would work if someone weren't trained and weren't expecting it.

Also, I don't think most martial arts competitions use spotlights. :)
- Steele Lawman
But it *is* a fundamental rule of Asian martial arts to use your opponent's size against him/her. She does that in spades. When your neck is in a nutcracker hold, you don't wait to hear a loud crack before "going with the flow" as it were.

"A lesbian who sought a North Carolina marriage license with her partner and was rejected under a state law banning same-sex marriage was arrested with another person Thursday after they refused to leave a government office where several gay and lesbian couples were turned away. The civil disobedience followed a day after President Barack Obama publicly endorsed same-sex marriage, and two days after North Carolina voters overwhelmingly passed a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as solely between a man and a woman."

"Since the creation of The Barbecue Bus it seems that every third thought through my brain involves pit cooked meat. My partner in 'cue <redacted> and I recently spent a day sampling barbecue available in New Orleans. We gave up after visiting just three locations and one delivery, but that was mostly because the food was too good to just sample."

Went to McClure's today for lunch (the last and final picture) and it's the most ridiculous BBQ I've had since I've moved here. NOLA is a big foodie town, but not a big BBQ town, but this is just like...whoa. I might have to try and get another meal in before Friday when he shuts down his pop-ups until he can find the $ for his own joint.

"To call these simply peanut butter brownies seems like a less than apt description. I’m not sure there are sufficient words to do justice. Make them yourself. A bite of one of these is better than anything that could ever be written about them."

I'm taking a government documents class this semester and it's interesting to be able to navigate all the bills and acts and whatnot that have been filed the past few years. Also interesting to see that Iowa has passed a same sex marriage law before say, California.
- Derrick
It seems a no-brainer, that eventually the Supremes will be forced to admit that any state (or the federal gov't) refusing to accept the marriages of another state is violating Article IV of the constitution.
- DJF
Eventually one or more of the challenges to anti-marriage laws is going to make it to the Supreme Court, either the challenge to California's referendum or one of the challenges to DOMA. If the latter gets struck down, it's going to force states and the federal government to start recognizing valid marriages from states that do have marriage equality, for the reason DJF mentioned.
- John (bird whisperer)
I suspect California will be on the list soon. The court decision is designed to be easy for the Supremes to *not* overturn, and a majority of Californians--including Catholics and Latinos, but not including Republicans--now favor marriage equality. And it's hard to believe DOMA will stand, esp. with the Executive Branch not defending it.
- Walt Crawford
This makes me extra happy, because one of my oldest friends and his partner live in Maryland. They have been married since 2006 (I was at their Canadian wedding, hoo boy was that a party), and now the state they live in knows they're married too. It does make a difference, even before the feds get on the bus...

Technically, Iowa was a court decision rather than legislation. Which also resulted in three of the Iowa Supreme Court justices losing their seats in the election following the decision.
- Katie
NJ would be on that list except fucking Jabba the Gov vetoed it.

"State Attorney General Kamala D. Harris unveiled the California Homeowner Bill of Rights Wednesday, a series of proposed laws aimed at shielding homeowners from fraudulent and unfair mortgage practices. The bills would prevent banks from dual-tracking — negotiating a loan modification with a homeowner at the same time it conducts a foreclosure process; force lending institutions to maintain a single point of contact for homeowners instead of passing customers from one person or department to the next; and create a special grand jury to investigate financial and foreclosure crimes. "California communities and families are being devastated by the mortgage and foreclosure crisis. We must ensure the deceptive practices that caused it never happen again," Attorney General Harris said in a statement. "The California Homeowner Bill of Rights will provide basic fairness and transparency for homeowners, and improve the mortgage process for everyone." The legislative proposals comes just weeks...

The news is saying this is the biggest Mardi Gras since Katrina and early estimations for the financials are between $200-300 million dollars. This is a good thing for the city.
I didn't do too much this year, but I'm planning on tearing it up in 2013. I'm ALREADY planning.

You didn't do Zulu or Rex this year, did you?
- Jason Toney
JT, I didn't. Did Zulu last year and have three coconuts to prove it! This year for me was really low key. Too distracted by everything to really get into the Carnival spirit.

BOOK REVIEW: 'Our Black Year': An Affluent African American Family Resolves to Patronize Only Black-Owned Businesses for a Year - http://www.huntingtonnews.net/22935
"It sounded like a good idea when Maggie and John Anderson came up with it: Patronize only African-American owned businesses for a year. But, as Maggie Anderson, with co-author Ted Gregory, writes in "Our Black Year: One Family's Quest to Buy Black in America's Racially Divided Economy" (PublicAffairs Books, 320 pages, $25.99) buying "Black" turned out to be much more complicated."

"The few stores owned by Blacks had a poor selection of substandard merchandise and very little fresh fruits and vegetables. Liquor stores predominate, with the only food on sale of the junk and snack variety. The Andersons discovered a Black-owned grocery on Chicago's South Side, traditional home of most of the city's African Americans, and even located a Black farmer who sold fresh...

Whedon: "You know, things like Secret Life [of an American Teenager] and Juno and Knocked Up – even if they pretend to deal with abortion, the movies don’t even say the word “abortion.” It’s something that over a third of American women are going to decide to have to do in their lives. But people are so terrified that no one will discuss the reality of it — not no one, but very few popular entertainments, even when they say they’re dealing with this issue, they don’t, and won’t. It’s frustrating to me. I don’t think Buffy should have a baby. I don’t think Buffy can take care of a baby. I agree with Buffy. It’s a very difficult decision for her, but she made a decision that so many people make and it’s such a hot button issue with Planned Parenthood under constant threat and attack right now. A woman’s right to choose is under attack as much as it’s ever been, and that’s a terrible and dangerous thing for this country. I don’t usually get soap box-y with this, but the thing about Buffy...

"Voices arguing for a woman's right to choose in America's anguished debate over abortion have discovered an unexpected ally: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The new issue of the Buffy comics, published on Thursday in the US, sees the Chosen One taking some time off from staking vampires through the heart to deal with what publisher Dark Horse called "a rather personal problem". Season nine continues, after issue five's cliffhanger revelation that the Slayer was pregnant, with Buffy deciding what to do about the unwanted pregnancy – the result of a drunken night at a party. Eventually she decides to have an abortion."
