Is there contemporary hip hop well suited for this moment or should stick with the golden age?
Shut em down conscious 90s rap vs make it rain millennial tripe hip hop? No comparison. - Starmama from FFHound(roid)!
I'm sure there's some underground hip-hop speaking to these types of situations, but the stuff on the radio is so far away from this, it's not even funny. As I mentioned on Twitter last night, I can't imagine anything recent hitting the nail on the head as well as some Public Enemy or a handful of other "old school" hip-hop artists did. By The Time I Get To Arizona could easily be re-purposed for St. Louis (or Ferguson). - COMPLICATED MR. NOODLE
I get the feeling there's going to be, soon - or, it's there underground, and hasn't quite hit the right airwaves yet. - Jennifer Dittrich
What about "Kingdom" by Common? http://open.spotify.com/track... - Corinne L
Kendrick Lamar - HiiiPower http://www.youtube.com/watch... - NOT THE CRICKET
There's an anger, an awareness, and an education level during the golden age that's missing in today's music (or I can't hear it because it's not for me). I also wonder if there's just some resignation to the idea that things don't change. That I should need new sounds 25 years after Fear of a Black Planet or 20 years after The Predator while those guys were like, we can't believe we need to make these sounds 20 years after James Brown and Nina Simone. Maybe the kids are just like..."fuck it." - Jason Toney
I feel like there's a lot of truth to that, Jason; I think it's also that today's consumer no longer seems interested in anything but an escape when listening to music. Admittedly, I have very little knowledge of today's hip-hop, other than what I hear my kids listen to, but I've noticed the same trend in hard rock/metal. During the 80s/90s there was a lot more intelligence and a lot... more... - COMPLICATED MR. NOODLE
Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Immortal Technique, The Last Emperor. Rage Against the Machine, if you don't mind a bit of metal mixed into your hip hop. - Bren - pseudo-Buddhist
Boots Riley still doing his thing, too - Starmama from FFHound(roid)!
If we're sticking strictly mainstream I'd say: Common, The Roots, Lupe Fiasco, Wale (on certain tracks. Much much less since he hooked up with Rick Ross though), LaCrae (if you care to dip into the Christian Hip-Hop side of things), J Cole (again on certain tracks), heck even early Kanye West. There are still voices out there finding ways to slip in thought provoking lyrics and social commentary amidst the party anthems and slickly produced beats that dominate the airwaves today. - DB, Lil LB's Dad
